She didn’t have that sexy little number Lil’ Kim would wear, or that outspoken outfit Queen Latifah would rock. It was a simple outfit a woman would wear to the grocery store. No make-up, hair not fully done, and no nails. Just straight up-as is. Eagle Nebula was her name, and last Saturday she performed at the 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. The Empire Fulton Ferry State Park was filled with true-hip hop fans.

Rain did not stop the DJ’s from throwin’ down and MC’s from spittin’ the truth. The crowd was wild. Hundreds of fans moved to the hot beats of DJ Misbeahaviour, and DJ Brina Payne as they got pumped for dead prez[read their interview here], Styles P, and Pharoahe Monche[watch his interview here].

But it was the sounds of Eagle Nebula that left the crowd dry. I was confused. Had we not just been movin’ to these beats? She was speakin the truth. She calls herself a “ghetto sage” and opened with her single “Daily Debut” from her album Cosmic Headphones. “Look at the time, less than an hour. Gotta be swift like Jack Bower- so I can be on time. And time is of essence when it comes to learning lessons. That’s true, what else to do. Live it like you mean it, on your daily debut. Everyday. Everyday”.

I thought her delivery was on point and her words were powerful. But the fellas in the audience didn’t think so. Many of them started pulling out their phones to text, going to get something to drink or they would start talking to each other. “She could have pulled it off at a smaller event. But not with a hype crowd like this. She didn’t have a good introduction. There was no build up to her performance”, said Tristan Graham from Jamaica.

But was it all about the introduction? Does a good artist really need a big introduction? I would think it would be unnecessary. But perhaps Nebula lacked that sexy appeal a male fan would need, regardless of what your spittin’. She didn’t have that long hair to fling in her face, or that cute skirt to hyke up real quick. Maybe she was trying to be classy, or perhaps she was just straight up lazy. Is there a higher standard for female rappers than there is for male rappers? Can you be a sexy rapper who has the utmost respect from her fans, while still being fully clothed?

Thought provoking! Thanx for highlighting this double standard of how the public receives male emcees vs. females. Women are forced to be ultra sexy, thin and raunchy in order to get any type of attention. However there are a few who have managed to escape the stereotype Queen Lah, MC Lyte and Missy E… which gives me hope.

Sometimes coming off like your better or “HOLIER THAN THOU” will kill a crowds hype!

I know first hand, I had to dumb down my “Preaching” to move the crowd! Now they rock with me.

    P.S. I am Hip-Hop and I love all my sista’s!

this articl is irrelevant. i DARE to name ANY female mc that is CURRENTLY having success! its not classy VS s**tty. majority of men just don’t care about female mc’s. i WILL say that Lil Mamma(lipgloss fame) can eat 89% of the rappers out now. ESPECIALLY GUCCI MAYNE!
don’t believe me? google her freestyling

WHAT DID SHE EXPECT WITH THAT STAGE NAME…

I MEAN COME ON MAN…EAGLE NEBULA

THE FIRST THING THAT I PERSONALLY THOUGHT OF WHEN HEARING THAT NAME WERE THE OLD EPISODES OF “THE JETSONS”

I actually respect a female Mcwho can spit and don’t s**t herself out. Quenn Latifah, Mc Lyte, Mia X, Chyna Whyte, Gangsta Boo are cold on the mic. Some people are ignorant and visual aka the typical commerical music consumer.

I believe hip-hop does love women, but let’s face it sex appeal sells. Plus, I don’t have nothing against women who work hard on their bodies who decide to dress sexy. However, I still say to each his or her own. The main thing in the end is figuring out how you will define your own success. Once any person does that then it’s easy to measure progress.

i gotta agree female mc’s have never gotten much respect. Looks and sexy dress may help a little but having a p***s would help a lot more.

I agree with a lot of what people are saying in these comments, but everybody is really missing the point. This isn’t necessarily so much about sexy vs. non-sexy femcees, it’s about mainstream vs. underground.

Mainstream will always be paid more attention because it’s “mainstream”. And lets face it, in order to be “mainstream” you’ve pretty much got to appease everyone with the trivial things in life.

It just so happens that one of the “trivial” things in woman’s life just happens to be looks. I believe there are quite a few femcees that can spit, but they will never see the light of day on the mainstream.

Like dude said earlier, Lil’ Mama was the closest thing to a “mainstreamer” that can actually spit that we will see for a while.

Life has been so commercial until an emcee like Eagle Nebula will never see mainstream success. I say f**k it, do your thing on the underground. You can still make somethin’ happen there…

hihop does’nt love anybody. hiphop is a culture that is mainly based on rap, graffitti, dance, and style. culture carries no love for anybody, that is ridiculous. the question should be, do the people sitting in the high seats of hiphops business aspect of the culture love all women? the answer is NO. the truth is, they don’t even care about the culture. they don’t respect the sound, the purpose, it’s classy but political artistic potential, nor do they love the ones who created it. the people in control of hiphops financial streamline does’nt even love “black” people. they want nothing more but to use what we have created against us. they want our music to carry no valuable weight of information. they want to use hiphop to keep us dressed like clowns before the entire world community. they want to continue to exploit the most royal and valuable women on the earth and keep an excuse to keep the kings behind bars. NO! it is impossible for hiphop to love.look around the hiphop community and question yourself properly: do YOU love hiphop? because thats the only way it will ever be.

I do think that sometimes it can be sexiest but her lyrics where kinda wack to me . Mia x ,queen laftifa , rage , just to na a few was not ever close to good looking but they made a name for themselves . I think her problem is the lyrics where wack and no one really want to hear wack lyrics from someone who has a neo soul look with it being a woman 3 strikes . yea real artist are going to feel lyrics regaudrless that why dead prez and others say she was live but the world aint filled with them and you got to entertain more then mind these days

Eagle Nebula makes you think and niggas love to be stupid. So instead to admitting that they’d rather stay stupid, they talk about her look. F**k a look, if that’s all that’s on your mind when you listen to a song, that means that your dome is 100% “Bleached.” Hip Hop on a corporate level only loves money!!!!!!!!!!

i agree with that one comment that was made…its mainstream vs underground….for me i really dnt care if the girl is ugly or not…if she got flow and talks about things that r meaningful then she got my attention….its not alot of female MC’s in the mainstream that r blowin now anyway…i mean u got trina but she talk about the same s**t everytime…lil kim aint like what she use to be and theres this one girl that new that ppl keep talkin about…her name is nikki minaja…she’s okay i think she just gonna be another lil kim….but the thing with female rappers is that now they all want that sexy look…. and have that sexy sound when they rap instead of being theirselves…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SincereAllah1234567_/ SincereAllah1234567_

Not only mainstream vs underground I personally think a lot of underground mcs are wack, I think most people put a lot of mcs that are nice but may not sell a lot of records in the underground section, and thats not fair, mos def, talib, ect are not underground they can spit, they might not have a lot of commercial success but they are very good mcs. But the bottom line is that nobody likes a new artist performance especially rappers. How many rappers have won appollo? Once they get that one hit they can get up, its been mcs that got booed but we might be pumping their s**t that next year and dont realize it.

Hip hop needs this woman, there are a lot of undergroud artists the the music industry sleeps on and I honestly think that’s a crime. I would buy her album.

Like eminem said you gotta start by saying something that will make em’ say,…”whaooooo what did she just say?!!!” It’s the same for everyone-gotta have a gimmick, people don’t pay attention to what they don’t know already. Just like anything you buy in the store.

There is no hip-hop when dealing with the corporate lions, that is rap and there is a different between the two. The corporate lions use to just be white or some other race but nowadays there are Uncle Toms’ such as Sean Combs that have taken the lovely torch. SAD! Yes, women especially black women have two strikes upon them in anything in life and it is a shame. If the woman is talented give her a chance.
Who cares about the name because I have heard some down right crazy names on the radio and there are plenty of male rappers that do not have the grace of a mirror.

I do not mind if the latest ladies want to dress a certain way, but do it because that is your style, and not because that is what males want, especially an idiot like Sean Combs and others. Males have never been a woman therefore they do not know the meaning of it. If only we can have back the “Ladies of Hip-Hop”. The true Mcs. Many have already been named in previous comments, but I will say this. Someone mentioned a few that were not attracted but had the style and words that hip hop needed. The Queen was included in that number, but uh is she not a cover girl or better yet cover woman since she is grown? To God Be The Glory.

We can say what we want to say about the industry but the bottom line is that if the majorty of the people dont want to hear it then thats what it is, at the end of the day people listen to what they like, how many singers and rappers out there with talent and dont sell records? nomatter what a company or a artist do you cant make the listener buy there s**t. I listen to music for entertainment, when I want to learn something I read my books. Yes industry run a lot of s**t bu tat the end if you are hot people will listen, but every wack rapper blames everybody but their work for their success or failure, if u call up and request people’s s**t and enough do it it will get played.

For that matter when do you hear positive rap period whether it’s male or female Talib Kwali hope I spelled the brother’s name right, Mos Def, and Nas they dont get burn like that on the air ways.

I remember in the 80′s when positive knowledge dropping rappers where the norm not the exception.

Even L Boogie a.k.a Lauren Hill drop one of the most inspirational and education albums of all time. Arguably the best female rap album of all time.

Maybe because she was part of a hit group already maybe because she had exposure in Sister Act 2.

But even she has fell to the wayside in a time of money, cash, hoes…

These once roaring flames of social injustice, mind elevating, and black power have fell to all but a flickering candle on it’s way burning out.

When we get tired of being satires of ourselves we’ll have a musical overhaul and get back to the basics…

Its very few Female MC’s that were good. The best was MC Lyte. S**t thats the only one I really liked. The rest had marginal success. But are usually done after 1 album.

I think most women are more interested in writing novels and singing than rapping. When I was a kid it seemed like there was a pretty good selection of female MC s who all had their own style. the males each had their own style as well. sometime around the mid 90s somebody decided that all rappers had to basically have the same image. the gangster paradigm of the rap game doesn’t include regular women. It doesn’t include regular men either. I don’t know about you but I never met a real hod nigga that got rich off selling crack. I mean I know there were a few people that got rich off it in the 80s but nowadays that s**t is like selling Amway. Overall I think rapping is just considered more masculine than singing and men do tend to have more of a built in fan base. a female rapper is going to have to do some work to attract women to her shows. she shouldn’t expect a bunch of men to listen to her the same way they would listen to a man rapping.
