“Where are the female MC?” It’s a question you hear more and more these days. For some newer music fans it may not seem like such a big deal but if you had a true understanding of just how many women USED to represent in hip-hop on a regular basis you’d understand. So to put things in perspective I’ve created a tribute gallery of female MCs past and present.

UPDATE: I truly appreciate the comments and folks giving me ones that aren’t on this list. I’ll be adding to the gallery trying to reach 100!

Also, my man DJ Just Dizle dropped this Ladies First mixtape a little while back hosted by MC Lyte and DJ Jazzy Joyce. Click HERE or on the image to download it!

Female MC’s irrelevant? U’re joking right? Many of the older female MC’s are BETTER than this broke down so-called rappers now. Many of these cats won’t out-sell or be as critically acclaimed as Lauryn Hill (and she had ONE album), and most of them can’t outflow Jean Grae. The old-skool females like Lyte were great in their own right.

Hip Hop which has been nearly destroyed by glorified negativity/rap music that theres no plce for those who fight for love only those who fight for money, and “respect” through tough talk or whatever either way if a female emcee were to make it now shed have to portray her self as a sex symbol first and having talent second which in my opinion isn’t what an emcee is about

Conscious Daughters, Nonchalant, Mia X, JJ Fad? Whew, ya’ll took me back to some of my favorites. But do people like Vita, Lil Mama, and Amil really count? (please say they really don’t, lol) I don’t see Suga T on there though and she used to be my girl. I was like 13 like “WTF is a Dooney & Bourke?” And why do people only talk about Diamond from Crime Mob and never Princess? And why is Foxxy Brown on there twice? There were a lot of airbushed-to-death pictures in that bunch which is sad because all of those girls are pretty in their own right. Looking at that list it’s crazy to see the real lyricists, the okay ones, the pop rappers, and the purely fabricated ones all together like that. I’m pleased to see and remember that there are in fact more real ones that fake ones, even if some of the fake ones got more airplay.

Bahamadia and Jean Grey are pretty hot but mostly slept on – I guess thats the perils of being mostly underground. Where are the rest? Too old to pick up a mic and be taken seriously. Isn’t there a shelf life to MCing?

Aksent is not on here, nor Ms. Jade both of them chicks is raw, and Sonja Blade don’t 4get her, but yea what is the deal wit our femcees??? They need to put a foot back in the game, Eve need to go back to her RR days, Kim need to put the auto tune down, Foxxy need to get herself together, Rah Digga need to hook back up wit Busta Bus, Niki Minaj need to stop f**kin wit Wayne, Shawnna need to go back to DTP and do more songs wit Luda, Lil Mama need to hang it up altogether… ummm the others they just need to get back to rappin and stop actin, if all those femcees minus the ones that r dead got together on a song, it’d be FIRE!!!

Lauren Hill???!!! What the PHUCK is SHE doin’ on the MC/Rapper list??!! Anyway.. I like Trina (in EVERY way! ;-) and MC Lyte!! Yo-Yo was a fine assed thang, but I guess we’ll never hear from her again! I don’t care for Missy anymore, The Brat held it down in the 90’2 and Left Eye just came back with her new CD (I got that one on my iPod Touch! It’s FYRE!!) Charli Baltimore was FYRE too! Don’t know what she’s doin’ now. I had a thang for MC Trouble back in the days.. Her untimely passing brought an abrupt end to that fantasy! Amil got some serious skillz! One question.. Is ‘Lil Mama’ legal? ;-)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SoularFlarez/ SoularFlarez

MC-Lyte, Mia-X (new orleans), II-Tru (cleveland), Jean Grae…. and Lauryn Hill rhymes better than most of the dudes rapping now LOL on sum real shlt though, there a BUNCH of talented female MC’s but if they not actin like degenerate w***es in heat, they are underground doing their thing…….but like how most of the media (tv/radio/movies) goes….if you wanna be in the limelight you gonna do the jiggaboo coon shlt….(BAMBOOZLED). if they not shakin they azz n all they, they not gettin no play.

oh yeah Miss Nana from newark!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/onyx11_76/ onyx11_76

Soular I agree. Females that rap will not do well in the biz unless they are half naked like Trina, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, etc. These women have made it really hard for those who have true talent to be taken seriously as female rappers.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/futureastondrvr/ futureastondrvr

People say lil kim, and foxy made it hard for women in the rap game but in reality without them there wouldnt be alot of other people. THey would have never been given the chance. While, lil kim and foxy def sexed things up they also showed females can rap like men who also rap about sex money, cars and clothes…..its a double standard to say females cant do the same.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BlackCasper2001/ BlackCasper2001

The only female MC who is notable now is Lil’ Mama and her album didn’t do well. I don’t feel that women shouldn’t have a voice in hip-hop. That is one reason why hip-hop is watered down. I say it’s sexist for women not to be very relevant in hip-hop.

I have been asking myself this question for ten years now. I haven’t seen any female rapper spit rhymes in a long time. Don’t get me wrong, the fellas have been doing their job but I think it is time for the ladies to make a comeback. Nowadays, the biggest thing with these music execs and talent scouts are more into finding the model type women than women who can actually rap… Back then, when you see the original female rappers of the eighties and nineties, they were as tomboy as they came and the looks were modest. There still were some female MC’s who didn’t come off as strongly as many of the others like MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Yo Yo, Monie Love, Lauryn Hill (Fugees Lauryn). Today, it’s more about fitting to a certain standard physically than the basic, “Can you rap? Show it. Prove it.” requirement of long ago.

Sex is the thing that sells more than talent nowadays. And most of today’s so-called female MC’s are allowing their “assets” to sell their music more than their talent. Most of them hide their lack of rap skills behind their beautiful faces and sexy bodies… figuring the fans, particulary the male fans would be more forgiving of a pretty woman who can’t rap then say, some tomboyish female MC with modest looks. Those are the ones who can really rap their peers under a table…

Bottom line, it’s all about sex appeal. That’s what sells rather than modest sexy who can be a beast behind the mic.

Well that is because there is so much bulls**t in the game and hip hop world. I mean woman are easy to be used in the hip hop world. And they are tired of the race. Some of the stars are private and have families. So you have to think about the ones that where the best and they die. And it always seem to be drugs or accidents. That I believe that was paid out to get you off the set. YOu can’t just be your self you have to do what they want you to do. And what woman in todays time have time for that s**t. Some of the woman found out that accepting God having a family. Is more better then dealing with evil men and woman of that R&B world who have time for the ego s**t. Or the f**king race of ego they want to put you in. Then if you look at BET at night you see where they are making are young woman become w***es or in the porn world. No I would be a Missing MC as well. If I was in the R&B world. I would be more like Sade. One track last 8 years ….lol

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/thetiptoebandit/ thetiptoebandit

The problem with most of these females MC’s are 1-they never wrote there own lyrics, 2- they more flash than substance, 3- they are where they are do to the fact that they slept with a bigger named male rapper and they are forever stuck behind their shadow. If the female MC’s would put on some clothes perhaps they would be taken a bit more seriously!

PS KeeLee78 Remy Ma was trash since the beginning and the only person who she is nicer than is her wack azz husband!

IT WAS HARD FOR FEMALE MC’S TO MAKE IT BACK THEN LET ALONE NOW…THEY’D PROBABLY HAVE TO MAKE COMPLETE FOOLS OF THEIR SELF TO COMPETE WITH THE MALE RAP GENRE. EX: WEAR HARDLY NUTHN, CURSE ALOT, BASICALLY BE CLOSE TO PORN STARS. I MEAN THE MEN NOW A DAYS IN RAP ARE SO DISRESPECTFUL…NUTHN LIKE BACK IN THE DAY WHEN RAP WAS MOSTLY POSITIVE. NOW THE WOMAN WOULD HAVE TO COME BACK JUST AS HARD OR HARDER THAN THE GUYS & I DNT BLAME THESE FEMALE MC’S FOR NOT WANTING ANY PART OF THAT…UNTIL RAP BECOMES POSITIVE AGAIN!

The reason why the females are few and far is because we allowed you know who to dictate to us what is music so after all of the real female emcees were cast aside they were replaced with b***hes, hoes and hoochies. They talk about diamonds, sex, and money like the most male rappers speak about and there is a unbalance because we gave and continue to give away our culture to those who do nothing but destroy then turn around use it against us and got the younger ones messed up in the head because they listening to a dumb ass like lil wayne and try to emulate what he does.

omg i don’t even recognize some of these women. 15-20 i know of for sure. i think the reason why female emcees dont last is because just as other women they end up having to stop to focus on personal issues such as raising a family or not being being able to get deals such as their male counterparts. i believe i have the secret into making the perfect female emcees. so ladies get at me if your down to know.

This is what happens when you let kids do a grown mans job of representin’. C’mon man, where that hell is Rah Digga, Bohamadia, The deadly Venoms, Lady Luck, Finess and Sequence, Queen Latifah (mentioned SEVERAL TIMES), Conscious Daughters, Angie B. and the Lady of Rage. Perhaps you should write a new article entitled :Whatever happened to the REAL writer who KNOW about the HISTORY of HIP-HOP?!

    IMANI KAIREE

    http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/imanikairee

    Biography
    Imani Kairee
“Respect Me, Respect Yourself, And We’ll Get Along Fine”

Her idols are Kanye, her mother and God. Not in that order.

Charismatic rapper I’mani, is still on curfew, but she doesn’t mind. She’s thrilled to be alive, and doing what she loves; performing. She has the heart of an old soul; warm and worldly. She’s excited to be able to vote, and wants to encourage other young people to exercise that precious gift. Her social conscience, eagerness to help steer the destiny of her America, and personal modesty set I’mani apart from the more flirty-dirty, eager-to-please girl rappers.

Her name translates to ‘faith,’ and she wears it well.

“For me, rap over R&B is what came easy and stuck to me. It doesn’t get boring. When I hear a beat I start thinking what hook I can come up with, I’ll have rap songs with R&B hooks. I’m still doing age-related stuff, about crushes; my song ‘Ready to Party’ is funny stuff about what teenagers go through. I’m not trying to be a role model, but sometimes it comes off that way.”

“Women are always queens to me. You don’t have to show your body to be sexy. I want them to say that I’mani is sexy and classy at the same time. Showing your body, you’ll get the wrong kind of attention.”

I’mani sees herself in service to others. “In five years I see myself helping people; In my song, ‘Dream Big,’ I thank God for getting me this far. I say ‘Dream past the clouds, for the stars, the moon.’ That’s what really touches me… In ‘Get it Poppin’ I’m just saying that I’m here – I’m a new, fresh young talent… not every song is a message song.”

An only child raised by a single mom, I’mani benefited from a solid upbringing: “My mother is my role model, she’s backed me up through this whole process.”

Kanye West was also an important role model for I’mani: “I just love his work. He’s clever with words.”

But was growing up in Connecticut a sheltered existence? Where does she get her material? I’mani cautions: “Don’t make the mistake of thinking that nothing happens here! Bad things happen in good neighborhoods!” Still her message is about being good. “I feel good about doing more healing through music. I use absolutely no profanity in my lyrics; it makes me a better songwriter to be able to find other words to express things, I don’t need it as filler; I make up my own words.”

A self-described ‘young lady,’ I’mani is concerned about more than just boys, clothes and parties, although for sure, you will find these mentioned in her rapid fire delivery. Her interest in Darfur, presidential and local politics, education and healing through her music define her as a rapper with depth and the potential to develop along the lines of a Kanye, whose political perspectives are well doc**ented through his lyrics. I’mani’s mantra is to ‘Dream Big,’ good advice for a young unknown who was blessed to be taken under the benevolent wing of Thelonious Monk, Jr.; son of the jazz great.
I’mani met Monk through a friend. “We were like pieces of a puzzle that just fit.” I’mani is feeling the love all round.“Thelonious is incredible; every time I talk to him, he just smiles and you know it’s gonna be good. He called me and said; you’re doing great! For someone that’s been in the biz this long, to take a chance on me…I thank God for putting this amazing person in my path.”

I’mani understands the precarious world of survival in the music business. She appreciates education as an essential. “I graduated, but my biggest frustration was school. Teachers nowadays are not so helpful. A lot of kids need a lot of motivation, and when teachers are upbeat and want kids to graduate, it makes a big difference. I did graduate and I’m so grateful. I’m going to go to fashion design school in New York, and take some courses. I like fashion and style; I’m always looking for ways to make something unique; make it my own.” I’mani also loves to cook. “I experiment! I’m not saying that everything comes out great!”

Importantly, she isn’t ‘bling-blind’: “When I’m making money, first I want to invest, then put money back into the world. I’d like to do something to help single parents…it’s challenging! My mom did it.” With no brothers or sisters, is I’mani lonely? She smiles, hugs her mom. “No, I get all the love.”
