Before Mp3s became the standard music delivery method an album or CD’s cover art played a huge part in the consumer experience. Record collectors around the world value the condition of a jacket almost as much as the vinyl itself and many of the last remaining record stores have immortalized covers on the walls. But now cover art has been reduced to a JPEG on an iPod that barely gets noticed half the time.

With that in mind I created a gallery of album graphics and artwork that I found to be either classic in their execution, controversial for one reason or another, but totally memorable either way.

Man they brought back some memories there, that Millie Jackson one was so bizzare, but sexy to me as a kid. They are still missing some good ones like Michael Jackson’s thriller, saturday night fever, Donna Summer, Tina Turner, Ice T’s power album cover and back, and many o thers. I agree that new look on Jay-z kinda scary.

The album covers you selected were all classic. This was a time when the album cover made its own statement before you even listened to the music. I miss those times. I think you have to add Nas Illmatic album cover to the list.

wow…. Album art is the last and only reason to buy an album out the store… It’s almost a collectors’ thing… you buy the album, download to an Ipod and shelf the disc and the book…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/nailzmc/ nailzmc

I like alot of the album covers posted but i mean give the writer a break u cant list every single hot album cover in the history of music….lol..in fact being an extreme hiphop head i have frames in my crib with my fav albums inside .many times i think the albumcover exmplefies how the artist feels and how they feel in that state of mind on that patcular album….but i think some hot ones are how nas had his 1st 4 albums all were the same picture but progressed from the boy to man to pharoah to nastradamus….im surprised “makaveli” wasnt on here. to me makaveli was like “im ‘Pac and love me or hate me ive been thru alot, and sometimes i feel as if the world crucifies me its stressful being me ” …also ya might hate but i think jay-z’s “the blueprint” was tight with SC smokin the cigar like as to say “im on top of the game right now..this is my work and im just gonna chill and let the world love it..f**k ya” …..and also the Game’s first 2 albums…with The Game i think it was like “im Westside this is me and im the Game” and on the 2nd album i think he took the same pic but different daytons as to say “im the game, still got hot music, some things changed, but im basically the same”.. also tribe called quest always had some hot/different covers…. someone also made a point to mention 36 Chambers too…that was hot how every Wu Tang member had a mask on as to say ‘it dont matter what we look like individually we a team and we all get down” …i dont know maybe im thinking too deep but thats how i feel when i see certain album covers…

Yeah, that Millie Jackson one was kinda out there.. LOL but a riot too… Nas, I never quite understood why he used that N word so much in the context of a record cover then the whole jacket thing with him and Kelis… I can understand putting it in context of how such a negative word impacted his life and the life of those before him, for example… but putting it out there in a way to glamorize it just make us as African Americans look ignorant. The fact that we would wear such a dispicable word on our bodies and embroidered in our clothes, like it’s something to be proud about. Just think that those in the rap game and other forms of entertainment should be elevating the legacy of African Americans, not reach down in the gutters of humanity and playing dress up with the most foul words and behaviors ever created by the human race. That Sambo album cover is another one this goes for. Not cool.

Moving on to ODB… that food stamp card was TMI, but hilarious nevertheless! Just showed how shameless the brother was…Again, the whole image thing, but I’ll leave it at that, I have respect for the guy. I know he was a troubled soul when he was among us.

Those Roots Album covers were DEEP AND HAUNTING. Those got my attention, no doubt.
Ohio Players always had those model women on their covers… My brother had a collection of those guys records when he was a dj.

The funkadelic one… another strange yet hilarious picture, like the Millie Jackson one. LOL… Those were interesting covers to look at. :-)

Love the album covers. My personal fav is Marvin Gaye’s album cover because it reminds me about how us as Black people partying and having a good time. I learned in later years that the late Ernie Barnes painted the picture which was featured on Good Times.

What’s controversial about the Lauryn Hill Album cover?? And even the Outkast cover…whats controversial about that?

    Re:Sweets10

    “Classic and Controversial”

Lauryn Hill and Outcast’s covers are classic as it says in the blurb for the Outcast cover.

I enjoy looking at exciting art that repesent the black people and that therefore we should look at the lives that changed the world that created good music. Hoping in the future that we can see others that making music is fun and happy and hope that it can continue to be that way.

the ohio players album cover got them in some legal trouble because the woman who they used got hot honey all over her body and it wouldnt come off,so she sued.i couldve told her silly ass they wasnt going to work cause hot honey sticks to everything.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shyscorpio1/ shyscorpio1

they forgot one major one. ELECTRIC SPANKING OF WAR BABIES by FUNKADELIC and many others for them by PEDRO BELL. they originators of controversy were ignored, in my opinion!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/rajarabbit/ rajarabbit

Reading is fundamental. The title is CLASSIC and CONTROVERSIAL album covers.

The controversial one I thought was powerful was by dead prez if I am not mistaken. They had a picture of a black man burned by white men in Indiana. He was accused of rape and he did even do it.

That pulled that cover of course.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SYNCEREG/ SYNCEREG

Some people didnt read the title i see CLASSIC & CONTROVERSAIL ALBUM COVERS. meaning not all are bad . The misejducation covers was a great idea. life after death was biggies best album to bad it was like forsight into what was about to happen. n****r was a nice cover also a good idea for his album theme to me . there was a few more good ideas on there but those stand out to me . I have never even heard of COOP but from there cover it looks WACK and im sorry if this was planned months before the 9-11 then someone knew something because thats a BIG coincidence you just put out an album cover that has no history or meaning behind it diplicting the attack that happens a few months later . But who knows maybe the STUPID ones are us and its just one that needs to be added to the big stack of “coincidences” that surround 9-11.lol
