VIA 24HH:

Jay-Z has really been speaking out lately. His latest comments had to do with his feelings about music saying that, “There is no such thing as black music.” Jay recently shared his thoughts after a performance at the University of Arizona where he shared the stage with artists like Kelly Clarkson and Third Eye Blind.

Recently, Jay has been quoted saying that the “gangsta” no longer exists [click here to read]. To some, his latest comments may have been a bit radical but Hov is definitely speaking out about the state that Hip-Hop is in and the barriers that this genre seems to often times hold.

According to Rap Radar, Jay had this to say:

“On the show as well were Third Eye Blind and Kelly Clarkson,” Jay explained. “I thought that to be the oddest pairing ever but, soon realized, it’s what I’ve always professed. There is no such thing as black music or white music only good or bad music. It’s stupid cool to like things that are not like you, and that goes for outside of music. If you’re an African American you can have a Jewish friend…I think concerts like this should happen more often…I’m putting that into the universe..next up Taylor Swift and Uncle Murda!!”

BlackPlanet has the “age of Black music” come to an end? Was it ever around? Share your thoughts!

Jay Your Strong Suit Has Never Been Public Speaking . When 1 Speaks Like This U Actually End Up Doing More Harm Than Good . Though I’m Positive U Absolutely Meant No Harm , A Thorough , Accurate And Logically Sound Articulation Would’ve Been Appropriate .
Notes Are Notes When It Comes To Music
But The Way The Melodic Articulation Is Expressed. Is Attributed To A Tribe, A Community , A People , A Culture Indeed To An Ethnicity. So When U Say There Is No Such Thing As Black Music , U Are Saying There Is No Such thing As Black Culture .

Jay Z needs to stick to making moves behind closed doors. Because he has been saying more stupid shyt lately. What’s Gucci Mane, OJ the Juiceman, and Project Pat are and the type of music they are making? Gangsta street music. Jay Z has officially been sellout mainstream pop artist this decade and doesn’t rep or speak for the hood anymore. Jigga is a puppet for these old White/Jewish record execs and don’t even know it. I know about the record industry and what direction these wack execs and trying take it to. They are trying to commericalize Hip-Hop much as they can and take control away from the people who make the music aka Black urban people. That’s why it’s so much wack gimmick fantasy music out. Not enough balance at all. The hood or the avearge Black person isn’t checking for Third eye blind or Kelly Clarkson. Because their music doesn’t move me or I can’t relate to it basically. Jigga is just a ploy in the NWO and isn’t fooling me no such way.

Music is so different- that’s the beauty of it. You can trace every different genre back to a different culture. There is most definitely such thing as black music… as well as other culturally defined genres and subgenres of music.

Jigga…I don’t know bruh…Like cats said, maybe you need to fall back, find new artists…cause public speakin aint your twist. It’s a dumb comment…like Cafe said, it then should follow that “there is no Latin music, there is no Celtic music”…I dig the intent tho…you were going the egalitarian, whole wheat,inter-faith, “We are the World” route…but in post-slavery Amerikkka, that ish dont float. This is a racially polarized country, and labels stick. Sad but true. Make more beats, find new artists, smash Beyonce, but chill with the political stuff. I dont think you built for that.

Ok… There’s nothing wrong with having open concerts for every race Jay. There’s nothing wrong with white people liking black music or black people liking white music. There’s nothing wrong with different forms of music being influenced by other types and races neither. BUT… I think it’s time for him to hang up the mic and retire. He is speaking blasphemy now. No such thing as black music? What is blues, jazz, gospel, funk, hip hop, r&b, neo soul, African music, even negro spirituals or slave music…. TELL ME THAT JAY-HOVA? Black people created those forms. Just say that music is music… it’s just either good or bad… don’t say there is no such thing as black music or white music… that is a lil off.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ariel/ ariel

African rhythms are the root of most modern day music with percussion. J best to be speaking for his own music, which is POP and received by all.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/kain1984/ kain1984

I can tell you people on here are just looking to hate on Hov he’s just speaking on the state of hip-hop black people seem to think it just belongs to them. Thats foolish because we barely own any of these labels so it doesn’t belong to us. I mean we dont even dress like blacks anymore we wear mohawks, skull belts, tight as jeans, niggas skateboarding and s**t nowadays. Everything is all f**ked up. The point is tho, good music is good music no matter the genre. If you ass you ass and Hov is a legend f**k all the non-sense.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MIz31/ MIz31

Well the music is made by black people but the majority of people that BUY and SUPPORT the music are white people. So I can see where he is coming from.

IN A SENSE, JZ IS RIGHT. I MEAN, IF CHARLEY PRIDE CAN MAKE COUNTRY MUSIC, JUAN ATKINS CAN MAKE TECH, CARL COX CAN MAKE PROGRESSIVE DANCE MUSIC, ZOLTAR CAN MAKE TRANCE, AND ANY BLACK MAN OR WOMAN CAN DO ANY GENRE OF MUSIC, THEN YOU CAN SAY THERE IS NO BLACK MUSIC. JUST MUSIC. FOR THOSE WHO HATE LABELS! JUST MUSIC.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NOWHITEIN/ NOWHITEIN

JUST TO ADD. JZ SAID THAT THIRD EYE BLIND AND KELLY CLARKSON IS AN ODD PAIRING. I DONT THINK SO. THEY ARE IN THE MAIN FRAME OF POPULAR MUSIC. AND BOTH HAVE ROCK SIMILIARITIES. IF YOU WANT AN ODD PAIRING, TRY FRANKIE KNUCKLES AND DEPECHE MODE. WHAT DO YOU GET? THE FUTURE CLASSIC OF DEPECHE MODE’S NEW SINGLE “WRONG REMIXED BY THE HOUSE LEGEND FRANKIE KNUCKLES. I GUESS OPPOSITES DO ATTRACT HUH? LOL

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Hakim4000/ Hakim4000

In what Lil’Wayne professes about himself, this comment from Jay falls in the same regards “misunderstood”. I think his comment comes off losely because it seems to disconnect blacks from any claim to some deep-rooted culture of music. While I’m sure Jay didn’t mean for it to come off in such a way where he displaces Black from a historical context regarding music. What I think he meant to say was with hiphop today and so many different people (of all color) embracing the art, to say hip hop(and I’m assuming he meant hiphop music)is just black music is no longer the case. HipHop music today seems to be going through an evolution as it takes from a variety of other genre of music that most of would label “white music”–rock-n-roll(Jay-z & Linkin Park) and country music (Nelly and Tim Mgraw). So between a wide variety of people embracing hiphop and hiphop including other genre’s (maybe to correct Jay) it would seem that, “there’s no such thing ‘anymore’ as Hiphop being just black music”.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Motown_Lovely1/ Motown_Lovely1

You would think that someone who created his music off the origins of another’s wouldn’t make such an asinine statment. He’s generalizing music. I get that. But lets not forget and if you don’t know what “Black Music” used to represent; unity, togetherness, love, and freedom. Black music was an interpretation of us as Black ppl, our inner working, our creativity, and what we felt in our souls.Every form of music that exist today is because of “Black Music”. So yea, Black Music is alive and kicking in Country, Alternative,Alternative Rock, Rock, Classic Rock,Pop, hell even metal.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tonyw3/ tonyw3

speaking up for jz, I LIKE WHAT JZ SAID WE BEEN HEADING INTO THIS ERA FOR A LONG TIME WE FORCE ALL THE MUSIC THAT IS MADE BY BLACK ARTIST ON WHITE SOCIETY, AND CAME UP WITH RAP THAT PUT US ON THE MAP. IT USED TO BE THAT A WHITE ARTIST HAD TO SOUND OR HAVE A BLACK SOUND FOR US TO LIKE HIM,AND NOW WE LIKE HIS SOUND PERIOD. SO I AGREE WITH JZ WHO IS TALKING ABOUT THE PRESENT NOT THE PAST.

I disagree with Jay-Z on that if its roots come from Black culture than it’s Black music. Just imagine telling a person from Ireland that their folk music isn’t Celtic music (roots from Ireland) or traditional music from China isn’t their music. Hip Hop music is our music created by African and Latino Americans. Rock and Roll is Black music that crossed over to the white audience and eventually we abandoned it. I think Jay-Z is smarter than that and possibly the media only took a piece of what he said.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/WestsideCartelAtl85/ WestsideCartelAtl85

Music isn’t universal at all. Only non read uneducated people say something like that. I had taken music courses at my college and some things we hear in the world aren’t considered music in other cultures. Basically music isn’t a universal language. Just because Jigga says something doesn’t means it’s the holy word or right. It’s his opinion and it sounded unintelligent and uninformed. Like the slavemasters said, “if you wanna keep something from an n word, put it in a book.” I’m well read and the wool will never be pulled over my eyes ever. Cultures are being blended and blurred on purpose for a bigger plan. I’m not gonna say nothing about it though. Because it might be too deep for the average mind to handle.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/upstart_22/ upstart_22

I agree with the fact that there’s good and bad music. I also agree with tracking the roots of the music and individual artist, as DoForSelfEnt put it. I listen to just about everything, but I try to recognize and respect the roots of the music, and if it is good or bad.

yall have to exuse jay z. hes spent most of his meaniless life promoting drugs and violence so that means that he aint truly for this cause called the african american struggle. Dr claud anderson tried to start an African town in Detroit in 2006 and white folk wouldnt let him. if it aint no color in music then where do we seperate ourselves from these stupid people that captured us and then trained thier immigrant cousins to keep the wealth away from us at. when can we go back to the time that we had our own communities before they flew planes and dropped bombs on us. the more you go thier way the more we have to forget what theyre ancestors did and what they owe us. the majority of blacks here were among the first to come to this land, but immigration brought othere whites here. thats why they formed the united states. them immigrants took our land and tried to terroize us. now i say today, how come we cant shut them out and do forself as a whole. the farmers feed th builders. the builders build places of business for the professionals. the proffesionals manage the money to keep it circulating. and when its time to relax we get entertained by our own music. Black Wallstreet, Tulsa Oklahoma was destroyed because we didnt have protection against them. Now we do. from the thug t the gangster, to the Black cop, to the fireman, we should all focus on making a move while their world is falling apart. Peace out, u lames. DETROIT WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!lol

Why do Blacks insist on segregating everything. All the bringing together of races by black and white leaders is being destroy because you won’t let go the past. Slavery was hundreds of years ago. I’ve always said that there is no such thing as white or black music. Just good and bad. Whatever race you are, whatever music you feel like making you make. “Prom Queen” -Lil Wayne. And to Celcel man I cant believe you guys actually went to school. The Black American Struggle is within ourselves. We kill, steal and tear down our own kind and communities. Ever drove thru the white neighborhoods? Never think to throw trash out the window huh? But in the hood we have no problem s**tting where we sleep. When black people as a whole starts caring about each other and our communities then Whites might take notice. If you present yourself as Nigga then thats how you’ll be perceived.

Damn all this college work for nothing………..

    I ACTUALLY SORT OF AGREE
JUST BECAUSE A BLACK PERSON STARTED A CERTAIN TYPE OF MUSIC DOES NOT MEAN THEY OWN IT…PEOPLE NEED TO STOP ACTING LIKE THERES SUCH A HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BLACK AND WHITE WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS WHO BORROW S**T FROM EACHOTHER…STOP BEING ALL POSSESSIVE…THE WAY WE ARE THEY WAY WE ACT IS BASED ON OUR ENVIRONMENT NOT OUR SKIN…OKAY SO HIP HOP STARTED AS A WAY FOR BLACK PEOPLE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES WHEN THEY HAD NO OTHER WAY…WHEN THEY DIDN’T HAVE A VOICE…BUT S**T HAS EVOLVED
MUSIC IS MUSIC…PEOPLE LOVE DIFFERENT THINGS
I MEAN IN SAYING THAT ALL MUSIC IS BLACK MUSIC THEN BASICALLY YOU’RE SAYING ALL WHITE PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO BE BLACK WHEN THEY MAKE MUSIC RIGHT??
TO ME A HUMAN CREATED THIS GENRE OF MUSIC IT WASN’T ABOUT HIS SKIN COLOR IT WAS ABOUT HIS MENTALITY AND WHAT HE WAS GOING THROUGH OR FEELING AT THE TIME
AND I’M JUST SAYING AMERICAN MUSIC HERE OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A SUCH THING AS LATIN MUSIC OR AFRICAN MUSIC
    BUT AMERICAN IS AMERICAN
    REGARDLESS OF BLACK OR WHITE
BASICALLY JUST DO WHAT COMES FROM YOUR SOUL WHAT YOU FEEL WHAT YOU LOVE…WE ALL OWN MUSIC…IT’S OURS..NOT JUST THEIRS..LIKE I SAID ONE HUMAN THAT WAS GOING THROUGH OR FEELING WHATEVER MADE IT AND WE SHOULD ALL BE ABLE TO SHARE IT
BLACK IS A SKIN COLOR NOT A PERSONALITY TRAIT

Once our music goes commercial it will get water down, for other culture to like it. We can’t keep everything we started for a long time because we don’t make money keeping it in our community. That’s how we lose control of everything we started.

    Uh.. Run-DMC and Aerosmith.

The sound of music is universal, anyone can hear it, the message is for A people. As a sportsfan, I hear it all day on ESPN. White announcers come on the air and call assists “dimes” and jumpers “wet”. What makes us great is what makes us different, so I don’t have a problem with the cultural menage. Jay-Z and Linkin Park made a hot ass disc. I’m so happy that I am a black man in this world. It is truly amazing how powerful whitesupremacy is and the effect it has on people.

my opinion;he is black and WE black people on all levels are crazy, self destructive, back stabbing self haters to start with, long b4 whitey showed up and africans sold each other out.We are pretty much first place in things that dont really matter and most everything distructive and last in things that matter.

It is not his fault,he is a black person and because of our culture, no one should ever be suprised at our behavior.I dont even get angry anymore.

He is drunk with the power of fame and wealth that the whitesupremacists are allowing him to have and as usual, being black,in some way shape or form cant wait to start undermining his/her own…

In our present state worldwide,a black person with power, education and wealth is like a 6 year old with a gun and cant be trusted. Jay z is just one of most.

whatever they say should be taken with a grain of salt and until we change and quit lying to ourselves about how we are, it should stay that way. Adults in the know should tell the young that.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Monte_Brown/ Monte_Brown

Jay Z is right. Good music has no color. There is no black music or white music. Personally, I’d rather listen to old white or black artists than most of the new artists of today. Music in the past was a lot more enjoyable and intellectually created than the music of today. I enjoy Elton John, Neil Young, Judy Collins, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, Al Green, The Moody Blues and Michael Jackson more than I do any Hip Hop or R&B artist of today. Music is not black or white, it is just plain whack today. The song “Crazy in Love” came from an ad lib in Hall and Oate’s song “You Make My Dreams Come True”. A whole song from one ad lib wins a grammy. The artist of today just can’t sing that well. They just look pretty. I don’t watch music, I listen to it. Music is whack today because everything is synthetic, and people of today buy a look, not a sound. Good music died after Biggie and Tupac. Today’s music is not black or white. It is just whack sounding and monotonous. We might as well listen to a 4 year old kid beating on a drum.

I whole heartedly disagree with Jay Z. Its black music. Right now for rappers its everybodys music because they need sales and money with the economy being bad and everything. I can download his whole album for free. No its black music its just that white kids who cant identify with what is being said by a rapper are the ones buying that. Yea to keep my sales I would tell everyone that Russian communist like my music.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/KP_2G/ KP_2G

I disagree Hov. I do think there is such thing as Black music IF your’e talking about who makes the music, who originated the music, and who the music was meant for. In this case R&B, soul, reggae, rap, jazz, blues, etc. are all Black music. I think that in this time of unity and meshing of cultures, we are beginning to loose a bit of our own cultural identity. Whose fault is this? Don’t know. But I think that even if we do mesh cultures and learn to love each other for our differences, we still need to recognize that we ARE different and what is sacred to our individual cultures. Music is sacred to our culture. so I think Jay needs to rethink the logic behind his statements.

Im a musician and we know what we mean when we say that there is no such thing as white, black, or hispanic music. we make music for the whole world to listen too, we simply use our enviornment as the basis of our lyrics but thats what makes music hot. Stop thinking narrowly on music. It has nothing to do with sales. Most artists such as pac,Jay,diddy, eminem, andre 3000 all have listened to all types of music before they became famous. thats how musicians grow and become truly great. Stop with the labels

Last time i ckecked seggregation was a bad thing that hundreds of thousands of people fought against, so why do we seggregate ourselves? Don’t talk about Dr. King’s dream if all you want to do is limit it, cause that brings you right back to where you started. So what exactly are you fighting for then?? Man kind should be our race, there is too much anger and too many ignorant people to fuel the fire. There isn’t enough love:)We live in a different day and time now people, so go with it instead of being afraid. thats what ignorance is, fear of the unknown!
