VIA BET:

When Mos Def speaks, I suggest you LISTEN! Truthfully, when was the last time Mos Def spoke to the media (well at least as in-depth as his recent XXL interview in the July issue)? Don’t worry, I’ll wait. Yeah, exactly.

So when the big homey, Clover Hope (Twitter.com/Clovito) sat down with Mr. Def for the XXL feature, we knew several things would occur; A.) He’d take the time to inform his advocates why he’s not as accessible as his peers, B.) He’d issue an open hand slap to his cohorts about how they present their art, and C.) His political theories (a lane that some people may not agree with).

But Mos isn’t just talking to talk, he’s got an album to promote – The Ecstatic. (it hits stores June 30th). So clearly, he’s chit chatting for good reason. And since neither you or me can remember the last time we’ve seen Mos talk to the press, let’s dig into the current times- the July Issue of XXL Magazine. Check out Mos’ thoughts on being famous, Hip hop, and Bill Maher, below.

Mos Def on being famous…

“I keep getting rudely reminded that I’m famous. Maybe I keep denying it. I’m talking right now because it’s the time to. There’s nothing wrong with taking a pretty picture or getting your face out there. But for a while in hip hop, it started to feel like that was part of the creative process. And if you wasn’t doing that, that there was some part of the creative process that you was just neglecting that was vital, and uhh, I just disagree with that.”

Mos Def on the content in hip hop today…

“They don’t care about the people. I don’t think they even care that much about themselves. Nobody has to be a holly roller. But you don’t have to put poison in the food ’cause it’s cost-efficient or ’cause its tasty. This is gonna hurt people. And these are critical times for people.”

Peace….Mos Def..been with you since the cosby detective show..found that to be interesting..mad support..but you know..its time for the World to understand how far we as “Black”folk..have come and that its just the beginning of a new WORLD order…they speak on the pale horseman as being bad.destructive.but what if he was the opposite and to come “CHANGE” what had been dictated for so long..and they are affraid of this change ..because when the blackman find knowledge of self..we will do for ourselves..XXL..can i do a interview with anybody..about helping OUR communities of the inner cities..of the world..the forgotten races in far out places…They speak about the “RICH and FAMOUS”..but forget about the “POOR and the NAMELESS”..Young gifted and “BLACK”give the YOUTH the knowledge and they wont be left back…no child left behind…hummmmmm.sounds good but I”m from the HOOD were we are misunderstood.I live on “SESAME”street..not in Mr.ROGERS neighborhood…ding ding and no train comes.they say thats because i live in the slum.. dog wanting to become a MILLIONARE..but lack the education .motivation.and clean air..that will fill my mind and take away the fear..

Mos Def is one of my favorites. Lyrically, he brings it, and aesthetically, I’m loving it.

One thing i can say about Mos Def is he has pretty much remained the same over the years. But People like Jay-z they have kind da gone non lyrical. His Music doesnt mean anything anymore he cant rap about bein a dope dealer too much because hes not one anymore. Now his music to me lack structure.Mos Def 9 times out of 10 will remain the same because he raps about the struggle in the purest form.Very well noted actor and musical hip hop artist which is very slim nowadays.Mos Def he ight wit me.

I say that Talib Kweli, Black Dante (Mos Def), and Common do an album together. I would definitely cop it.

Mos Def has been a patron of hip-hop at his best. I am and continue to be a huge fan of his music. I agree that hip-hop in it’s musical form is a hollow shell of itself. I hope Mos Def found some beats on this album. The hip-hop public is starving for the return to the Mighty Mos Def, but the beats and music haven’t been of great quality since his “Black On Both Sides” album. Mos if you’re listening, if you’re out there your lyricism is legendary but in this day and age if the music doesn’t catch the ear, nobody is going to listen, a BlackStar album would be great right about now also. “The Captives own the masters to what we’re writing.” It’s o.k. to party and have fun and make fun music, but hip-hop today is toxic.
