VIA DX:

When rapper Antavio Johnson wrote the song “Kill Me A Cop” in his teen years and uploaded it onto a Myspace page, the possibility of future consequences was certainly not expected. Now, years later, Johnson is facing a two-year sentence for the aggressive lyrics he used in the song.

According to authorities, the 20-year-old rapper expressed his desire to kill two Lakeland, Florida officials in the song, which detectives found while researching gang-related activity on Myspace.com. On the track, Johnson calls the two officers out by name–one male and one female– and claims that they had harassed him during an earlier incident. In the song, Johnson announces, “I’ma kill me a cop one day,” and threatens to shoot the officers in the “dome” with a “glock” if they ever “get my timing wrong.”

Already serving time for a probation violation related to cocaine use, the legitimacy of Johnson’s added two years in prison is being questioned by the public. Many wonder if Johnson’s sentencing is unconstitutional and if it goes against the right to free speech. The American Civil Liberties Union, which is backing Johnson, maintained that “We [shouldn't] punish bad thoughts in America.” However, not all speech is protected under the Constitution. Florida state law deems it a third-degree felony to harm or threaten to harm public servants, their families, or people they care about.

Discontent with police officers, however, is nothing new in the rap genre. More than 20 years ago, N.W.A. boldly challenged authorities with their protest record “Fuck Tha Police” while Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s “Deep Cover” years later talked explicity about murdering police officials.

Previously, Johnson could not obtain a lawyer, but he has recently obtained one, as well as the support of the ACLU.

What sense does this make? If that’s the case alot of rappers would be jailed. They’re doing this because he’s already in jail but how can they get away with this because it is unconstitutional?

They view it as a thret. If u going to drop it dont call names because u talking aout law enforcement officer/cop. So when 50 drop it on J-z its different. U cannot drop it on police men and call their name. If u want to drop it dont call names.

In the Uk there is a place call speakers courner. U can stand there and say i am going to do what ever to the King/Queen and no one can arrest you. However if u do it anywhere else they lock u up for life.

Its all because he said a name. If 2 rappers are beefing and one says I will kill and says the other rappers name it becomes threat and is unlawful, (if) that person files a criminal complaint. Not to mention, that antavio johnson is on probation, that limits him in what he can do or say. If some one with no criminal history said it wouldn’t have been such a big deal.

UGH!!!!! this is criminal… being punished for high emotions…how ever, in this state of the world, people must be careful about threatening words…I am wondering if the officers were ever challenged or threatened orally/directly by the young man? Otherwise I can’t see a 2 year sentence!!!!

OK, SO IF THAT’S THE CASE, THEN WHY AREN’T ALL THE WHITE SUPREMACISTS WHO MADE THREATS TO ALL MINORITIES ON NATIONAL F**KIN’ TELEVISION FACING ANY TIME IN PRISON. SEE, THEY SENTENCE US TO DEATH, BUT WHEN ONE OF THEIRS MAKES A MISTAKE THEY JUST SPANK THIER HAND. THEN THEY WONDER WHY WE STILL FEEL THERE IS INJUSTICE.

these days cops are the worst of the worst i cant think of a time in my life that a police has ever helped me or anybody that i know for that matter what this guy is saying is just a matter of time before it becomes a reality and thats across the board for all races my advice to people in general especially african american becareful and watch yourself cops will kill you or destroy your life and not think twice about it and get away with it ..one day cop killing is going to be a everyday occurence what he said is in the past probably out of anger years back let it go put him on probation and put a real criminal in jail one of those killer cops make them understand that they will have to answer for killing innocent people and then they might think twice
