…Then why does he want him on his new album? Sorry, kid, you may have the rest of the world snappin’ they fingers and stompin’ they feet (me included) to your tracks, but you gotta know something about rap before you try to create your own lane.

And “haters” don’t trip… If you can’t spit one Hova verse verbatim, you need your brain checked.

Here’s what DeAndre had to say about “not understanding” Hov:

“Jay-Z, I always respected him,” Soulja told us. “Always. But I didn’t always like his music. I guess because I was too young, and I couldn’t understand what he was saying…I got signed when I was 16 years old. Before I got signed, I heard the song, and I was like, ‘That’s Jay-Z.’ My favorite song from him was ‘Dirt Off Your Shoulder.’ I guess I liked the beat or the way he was flowing on there. Any other song I used to hear, I ain’t really vibe with it like that… In the car ride over here, we was listening to ‘Brooklyn Go Hard,’he added. “He said, ‘I’m Jackie Robinson — I jack, I rob, I sin.’ I didn’t know he was snapping like that. Back then, I couldn’t understand none of what he was saying.”

Yes, Hova has more snaps than this kid has kiddie raps. But that aside, check out our ‘Noisemakers’ gallery below:

sound like a typical youngster that can’t understand when grown folks are talking…I give him props for actually admitting it..I wonder how many people probably don’t understand Jay, but go with the popular trend…Just like Wu and Rakim, you have to be on another level to really get some of the things they are saying…that’s what makes these dudes true artists!! not every body gets Shakespeare but those that do, easily see his brilliance!!

You have to understand what Soulja is really saying. Jay-Z, is as deep as the pacific ocean. His flows can go over people’s heads sometimes, that’s the beauty of it. That’s why you have to play his music a couple of times before you understand him. Kids are not going to get it right away. Did we ever understand a lot of grown-up things when we were younger?

The others need to read the “hater” article. Souljaboy told the truth and I’ll cosign with him. Jay-Z had to grow on me too; everbody who was “there” since Reasonable Doubt just seemed like bandwagon riders.

People should be praised when they come to actual realizations…not ridiculed

Ok if you think about itn he’s growing up he’s trying to rap about real stuff now…..BUT what the hell is he going to rap about really? think about he’s still wet behind the ears he didn’t even start life as an adult yet no real experinces yet, get shot up, go to jail for selling white, be homeless…. experince something “REAL” then you can rap about being “REAL” until then stay in your place and continue to rap about cellphone, asking for better grades from your teacher and flying like the man of steel.

I am still not that big on rap but not until 2 yrs ago was I able to understand what the heck they allll were talking about. So I’m with Souljaboy. He said it quite well. He is a very intelligent young man . One who is bright enough to know how to focus on his goals and get signed and keep getting paid because he knows how to give his audience what the heck they want. So we definitely have to give credit to this young black man who hopefully will remain positive. He is nothing like Bow-Wow for example… a poor example of the black strong male in America. I stand on that.

Nas dropped the classic album Illmatic at 20

NWA was in their late teens early 20′s when they dropped “Straight out of Compton”

Rap goes much further back than Jay Z. Way before most of us was even thought of. Rap had a presence during the lifetime of our African ancestors and it evolved over the years. Considering old blues and jazz records- many of these songs were sampled in rap music over the decades. At that time they called it talking, be bopping or jiving or scatting.
I strongly believe that “scatting,” a improvised fast paced style of singing found typically in jazz music, could be seen as a form of early rap. Scatting is a collection of melodies and rhythms articulated through improvised syllables and in today’s music, with words. Classic scatters were Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong. Hints of a contemporary scat, or scatting could be heard in West African Music, Reggae music (Bob Marley is one example), R&B (Justine Timbalake’s Rock Your Body, particularly towards the end of the song and Rhianna’s Pon de Replay can be seen as contemporary examples of scatting). As in rap music, Kwame, Twista, Bone Thugs and Harmony, to name a few rappers of contemporary scatting with words and syllables. Some old school examples of scatting can further be found in African Bamata’s Soul Sonic Force and the classic breakdancing anthem Din Daa Daa… You can even hear some forms of scatting through Nelly’s solo debut “Country Grammar”. Just a little history lesson in Hip Hop, spoken by a woman older than Soulja Boy yet younger than Jay Z.

When these young rappers talk about their elder rap peers, they should be appreciative of what they gave to the industry and how they inspired them along the way. I’m sure Jay Z had some influence on Soulja Boy which was why he was talking about him and his “hard to understand music”. Yes he was literally a baby during rise of Jay Z’s rap career, all he has to do is sit still, put his huge ego aside for a minute and listen… he’ll get Jay Z’s messages… I’m sure he got Tupac’s. It’s called music history. Hip hop history. History in Urban American culture. Anyone can learn it if they just take the time.

I think he says the same sort of thing when it comes to video games. Cuz the kid ain’t no gamer either. Let alone rapper. If he plans on getting any better (as he once mention) he better start to understand jay z flows. Pick up jay z reansonable doubt. A classic for the kiddies

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SnapshotNTime/ SnapshotNTime

I understood him to mean that he could not relate to what was being rapped about. He didn’t understand because that was not how he grew up or where he grew up. Its like hearing an old love song and not understanding all of the sexual undertones. Or like your parent trying to use ebonics when you know they had a privileged life. He admitted liking Jay’s music, and was honest about not understanding it. Give him some credit on this one y’all.

I was raised on hip hop to listen to the lyrics and flow, me and my boys used to debate certain phrases uttered by emcees to uncover the deeper meaning. Hop Hop in my late teens and 20′s used to educate, teach, enlighten.

The current generation of hip hopper are just listening to a beat and a catchy hook, the rapper can be talking any kind of trash shyt, as long as it sounds good. I cant fault the dude on his ignorance, but he need to sharpen his skills by broadening his hip hop horizon, listen to some MF DOOM or other lyrical cats. Listen to some classic albums and groups like De La Soul, KRS1, Tribe Called Quest.

Someone else earlier in these posts said something about todays rappers not studying their craft and knowing their history.

I for one have to agree with SexxyAssChica! The Urban Daily IS playing the old ‘Bait and Switch’ with us by saying ONE thing in the Subject Line to draw us in, then after we read the story, it’s not quite like it seemed.. That’s journalism 4 ya! Anyway.. I’m not now nor was I ever a (MUCH OVERRATED) Jay-Z fan myself. I like Soulja Boy’s songs. AT least the ones that have received airplay. Ease off the dude. He said he was TOO YOUNG to understand Jay-Z at the time! *Gavel Cracking down on Judge’s Bench* Case dismissed! ;-)

    Soulja Boy is lame!
Jay Z is what hip hop used to be. Soulja is what hip hop is now…LAME!!!!
Besides Lil Wayne, T.I. and a handful of other rappers, there aren’t any real rappers out there.
Hip hop has turned into beats instead of beats and lyrics.
Soulja Boy has never and never will get any play on my iPod or stereo.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Frenzy_Hunter/ Frenzy_Hunter

The world is a willingly ignorant. Ignorance is perpetuated and marketed as blissful. You can’t make science popular, regardless if it makes the computer you’re typing on. The same thing applies to lyrics–intelligent music simply isn’t enjoyed by the masses because they feel insulted and self-conscious about their own ignorance. Hence the reason jocks and cheerleaders are more popular than nerds. Hence the reason Jay-Z acknowledges he dumbed down his flow. Souljah Boy is just a product of human stupidity and ignorance and it isn’t his fault that he sucks.

First off. I’m from the south. I understand SB to a certain extent…a short one of course. People have to understand. Hiphop iz a way of life, rap, RnB, neo soul iz the soundtrack for hiphop. Personally, I’m disappointed at what hiphop has become. It used to be so introspective. But SB was just being honest. I used to didn’t even like jayz untill I heard “nigga what”! ….youd be hard

IMO there needs to be better differentiation between Rap, Hip Hop, and music with conscious lyrics. There is no way that I’m going to lump what the Fugees and old skool NAS and Common has done with what Rap and Hip Hop has become. Remember Eric B and Rakim’s “Paid in Full” album? *sighing* Jay Z is primarily commercial. Nice play on words, but what does Jay Z, Lil Wayne and most rappers talk about? Materialism. While TI has definitely reformed his message, why did it take impending jail time to prompt it? I actually appreciate Lil Wayne’s gift, but let’s be honest, what are either Jay Z or Lil Waynes really saying. And what’s really disappointing is the “criminalization of hip hop/rap.” It seems that hip hop/rap culture is glorifying violence, jail time, misuse of women, etc at a ridiculous level. Jail time does not legitimize a rapper. As someone who works in education, I just think it’s a shame that our kids and young people don’t know how to read and write but can sing/rap every hot song on the radio. The Harlem Renaissance had its poets…but what do we have?

Ok when I read the topic of the page I thought lil hommie was dising Jay Z in some form or fashion. However it seems to me the person who also is not of understanding is the author of this topic. Because my understanding which is typical for the younger generation and espically the ones from the south. Most of them around his age were not aware of his topics just as a lot of them dont know the artwork of Jimmie Henricks, Miles Davis, BB King, or Kurtis Blow but that doesn’t mean that he didnt like them they were just not on his radar. The problem with hip hop community today is that after the Biggie and Pac Sagga everyone thinks that everytime someone opens their mouth and not on the side youre on that youre hatting on them. Personally I didnt like the Hawaii Sofi but does that mean I dont think he’s a talent artist come on get past that. I would suggest that the author of this Article write a Retraction.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BreakitDown69/ BreakitDown69

I think it’s the other way around. We can understand Jay-Z, but who in the hell understands Soulja Boy? I listen to a lot southern cats, but dude isn’t one of them. If we go back to his first song on his first CD, so then the case is definitely closed!

anybody who says Jay-Z only raps about materialism and crime doesn’t know s**t about rap or hip/hop he in my opinion is on of the rare artist of our time that gives both sides of the story from a urban youth’s mind state. Go pick up reasonable doubt and listen to the remorse in D’Evils or listen to You must love me, or this can’t be life or Soon you’ll understand I could go on and on not to be a dick rider cuz honestly Nas is my favorite rapper but I can tell you as far as the Art in general not just music or hip hop or rap or whatever Jay’s probably the most influential and talented of my generation

Ok sun i dunno how old you are but when i was younger i listed to what the grown folks were playing. We all did, we had no choice, and minus the sexual innuendos that were all through these songs of the 50′s, 60′s, 70′s and 80′s i understood every bit of the music that entered my ears. Then you had your Jacksons, Sylvers, Osmonds, New Editions and Musical Youth (Pass the Dutchie) in which the latter was talking about smoking weed and we jammed to it, did i understand it as a kid? Hell No and it wasnt even a subject to question or make statements about like Soulja Boy. You listen to the music and appreciate it. What African Americans do in music is we play our music out and we make music that isnt timeless. You play Atomic Dog, Almost any 2Pac song, Classic Wutang Clan, thats timeless music. White youths understand this. They may listen to Hip Hop/Rap and on the rock side of things may love Hoobastank but trust me they love the music their parents jammed to like AC/DC, Def Lepard and etc and its in their music collection. We’re programmed to quickly forget our past even in music, its pathetic. For a cat like Soulja Boy who doesnt respect or recognize real Hip Hop or rap in the past and dont study fundamentals that would really make him fresh, has a hell of a whole lot to learn…..But probably wont he’s smellin his own sh*t making millions from the garbage he creates…..

This is the reason why I do not like most of the rappers out today. (notice I didn’t say MC’s) The lyrical content is BS! Ok we all love money and wanna get paid.. but these days it seems like anyone can pick up a mic and call them self a MC. When their stuff is wacker that wack. IM a true HIP HOP head. I mean its like the music coming out now days dont have no heart. They all about the same stuff and im really getting sick of it. See im from Texas baby land of the trill where we know what real. Soja Boy is not i cant stand his music i feel like i get dum every time i hear a song. The thing i hate the most about is he think he the best. If he wasnt so c**ky and was like i do is make dance songs and thats what i like doing. On and dont get me started on wayne he is like the most over rated rapper every. Now if we go back a few years to cater 2 that album was tight. Then something happen i dont know what it was but he started going down hill. This new sound he has it him it dont fit him. but let me get off my soap box and chill. All i am saying is HIP HOP as an art form is slowly dieing.

I guess he got a F in speech and english class too….throws some D’s on that hoe!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant stand Soulja Boy…dude is the poster child for No Child Left Behind…his music is pure garbage and it not the direction hip hop should be going in leading into the next generation…maybe if he stared understanding Jigga, he might actually turn into a decent rapper…

Self educate. NAS & Jay spent years honing their craft. Nas used to read the dictionary on the regular. How am I supposed to respect you when you are ignorant and seem to bask in it. Jay Z, NAS, Eminem and other heavyweights have used metaphors and flipped the English language in ingenious ways for years. Soulja Boy has some talent but it is limited by his clear lack of knowledge of even his own genre. Self educate being ignorant is not funny or cute.

How can u make number 1 hits and not understand Jay-z?? To me that just proves his career is an accident. Soulja got signed because of his superman dance off of youtube. I dont hate on anybody in the industry cause they found a way to make money. I get upset when people think that they are for real rappers and talk about nothing. Like soulja talking about he ended bow wow career. WHAT?? Was he serious?? When he comes out with multiple albums that sell then talk. Soulja needs to find a new producer do some homework and learn from the vets now that he is in the game.

“I Jack, I rob, I sin” is also a reference to an expressway in Brooklyn ( Jackie Robinson Xway). But Jay freaked that line on so many levels
