Since the early days of rock and roll, through the evolution of R&B and hip-hop, and up to the present day, white musicians have had a long history of shooting to super-stardom in traditionally Black genres. While some have been more welcomed by Black America than others, their work has never failed to attract plenty of attention.

From the famous to the infamous, the classic to the controversial, here are ten of the most recognizable white faces in Black music, and some of their greatest hits.

Robin Thicke

Jojo

Michael McDonald

Justin Timberlake

Christina Aguilera

Vanilla Ice

Jon B

Eminem

Amy Winehouse

Elvis

I guess this was only for the hip hop nation favorites, excluding Elvis of course. I would have to vote for Bonnie Raitt, Jon Mayer, Teena Marie, The Beatles, Carole King, Dave Matthews and Micheal Franks to name a few, I’m old school I admit it, Peace!

robin thicke is a white “ICON” of black music ????????
    he jacked maxwell whole aura!
amy crackhouse is a “ICON” ?! somebody google billy holliday to find out where amy crackhouse comes from. and smELVIS may be a “ICON” in the “white community” but to black people he was a racist thief!!!!

I think Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love”, should put him on this list.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BP_SportsFreaks/ BP_SportsFreaks

Teena Marie by far would be Number One! Then you’d have Boz Skaggs, Bobby Caldwell, Hall & Oats, Average White Band and Michael McDonald to name a few. I’m tossing Eminem out of any serious consideration for Icon status. He’s become nothing but a gimmick, wasting away his MCing skills. Christina Aguilera gets honorable mention too. Young lady can blow.

    Keep On….

What about Hall and Oates? The original “blue eyed soul brothers”! Quite influential during the 70′s and 80′s!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pbballin/ pbballin

the only ones that should be up there is Eminem, JT, and Robin.

    those other ones ehhhh

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/KaiDiamondOasis/ KaiDiamondOasis

Jon B. Dont diss on him Teena Marie should be up there. JT, Christina, Em, and Robin Thicke deserve 2 be picked

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DJ4ADay/ DJ4ADay

Sorry but this list is very shallow. What about Elton John . Peter Townsend, Paul Mcartney , Peter Gabriel . Bob Dylan , Eric Clapton those who are on your list are some of todays hit’s I admit that but they haven’t come close to leaving a legacy. outside of Eminem, Elvis and Micheal Bolton was a copy of other great artist./ Nice try but so far off… Ricardo

Whoever made this list must be young. How can you not include Hall and Oats?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Phillip_The_So_Fine/ Phillip_The_So_Fine

To put on Elvis, JoJo (who ever that is) Vanilla Ice, Eminem, and AMY WINEHOUSE?? is a slap in the face to the REAL white soulful icons (not borrowers or outright thieves) like Teena Marie, Hall & Oates and the Beastie Boys amongst others.

how about rare earth, who was the first white group to sign with motown. i just want to “celebrate”!

justin timberlake is a weak azzed sellout who let janet take the entire rap, and could have fell from grace had it not been for uncle tom black producers like timberland.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jazzy-KD/ Jazzy-KD

tina marie and beastie boys should def be on this list… now elvis was a thief … and vanilla ice was a one hit wonder… where’s fergie, nelly furtado, and gwen stefani … the list def needs some editing

“SOME BODY AT BLACK MUST BE SMOKING “CRACK”. WHERE IS THE UNCOMPARABLE MS. TEENA MARIE, THE AVERAGE WHITE BAND, KC, OF KC IN THE SUNSHINE BAND.MOST OF THESE PEOPLE ON YOUR LIST ARE “POP” ARTIST. I’D NEVER THOUGHT I’D BE SAYING THIS BUT “ELVIS” AND POSSIBLY MICHEAL MACDONALD ARE THE ONLY LEGIT ONES ON THE LIST.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sealed-with-a-mwah/ sealed-with-a-mwah

    Vanilla Ice? That’s downright offensive.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ny2128/ ny2128

Jackie Wilson, argued: “A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man’s music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis.” just figured i put that out there for all haters that say Elvis is a thief, just cuz maybe he expanded on something already there, which subsequently is done all the time by new artists trying to branch out and start something new. If you don’t know who Jackie Wilson is look him up

Elvis’ azz copied Richard Penniman & Charles Berry BIG TIME which actually put him “over the top!!” Now, as for so called “White Icons” of Black Music…i.e. KC & the Sunshine Band, Average White Band, Dr. John, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Rod Stewart, Peter Frampton, etc etc…they all lasted (together or individually) for “years” & didn’t just release 1 or 2 CDs/Albums only to never be heard of again or that they split up. Even to this day (years & years later) they can still sell out a concert and bring the whole damn house down with their performance…..and they are still “performing” today!! To me, that is what makes them “Iconic!!”

This is one of the reasons that I HATE music!
You cannot “STEAL” an idea. Art is not STEALING…. when you have an original idea, once you use it people will use it too no matter what color they are… case in point: When Rakim came out in 86 with the slow flow over James Brown samples… everyone else was yelling and using their own music… LL Cool J was had just went triple platinum the year before screaming his head off… after Rakim though for the next 5 years everyone was rapping slow… using James Brown samples
Music, like every other art form relies and relies HEAVILY on adaptation, modification and fusion….

As of the past 10 or so years ppl have been mistaken pop for r&b and hip hop. I think this list needs a serious make over to get the classifications correct and remove many of these pop artist.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1suaveguy/ 1suaveguy

timberlake and thicke just made this list 100% bonafide bulls**t.

That list is weak and wrong in several spots.

Where in the world is Hall and Oates?!!! And I agree, Teena Marie should have been on this list way before Jojo!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/smokez2k1/ smokez2k1

Nice try homie, but I don’t think, you’re “in the know” to be putting together lists. White acts accepted by blacks didn’t just start in the 90s and putting Elvis there was off the topic. Elvis was a re-recorder of black hit records. James Taylor, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, etc. get a clue
