“Def Jam is the dopest label in hip-hop, in the culture of hip-hop,” he said. “There really would be no hip-hop as we know it today if it wasn’t for Def Jam. But you don’t get that respect without also being the label that single-handedly destroyed hip-hop.”

Watch the clip for more insight from the teacher.

I dont agree with All of what KRS one says but here he’s talkin 100% real talk….Why dont we hear slaughterhouse? Raekwon? let smitty tell it they not hot or workin hard…it got to do wit the record labels buying time slots and rotation on radio stations…why da fukk else do we ONLY hear Kanye, weezy, drake and jigga on radio? is it because they are the only hotness and workin the hardest out of 1,000 artist in the game? get da fukk outta hea….it used to be a time that good music in hip hop got played no matter if it was a club song, lyrical song, or what…now all we hear is songs that sound good in a club somewhere..no variety or originality in the game at all

Although I don’t see where KRS, Nas, Ghost or anyone else has the “authority” to look down on the South, but that’s another tirade that I’ll address later….I do agree that most of this crap that the radio stations are being paid to play is repetitive GARBAGE. And for that person that is on Souljah Boys pubes, I guarantee that that lame ass will be a footnote five years from now. Russell Simmons figured out that he could sell out a culture to support his child-bride and he did it. F**k him, I know that some of you are going to say that “yeah, he’s rich” reply , and if you can be easily influenced by monetary gain then you are very much f**ked in the head by Reganomics. That along with the MEDIA is why the artful aspect of hip hop is a technicolor, happy assed, shuckin’ and grinnin’ mess that it is today. It has been sold out to the point where it has almost no street relevancy. That’s why you got this “skinny asssed jeaned hipster rap” bulls**t subgenre. It’s been watered down as if to appease the suburbanite that wants his/ her mom to hear it…..and there’s no “scary black people” But that’s what capitalism does to anything that is not available to the masses. Until Jay-Z finally realizes that clinging on to current trends only makes him look like a sad assed old man that is trying so dilligently to cling to his youth, L’il Wayne finally overdoses, Lupe Fiasco finally admits to being a f**king POSER, and Kid Cudi has a severe yeast infection I’ll keep on listening to UNDERGROUND s**te! F**k the radio. And F.Y.I. I AM SOUTHERN so there is no regionalism. Just realness!

Actually, it goes deeper that Def Jam… Avenues like BET, MTV, along with President Clinton signing the Telecom Act of 1996 so radio stations and companies like VIACOM, CLEAR CHANNEL and RADIO ONE can do whatever the hell they want, including the legalizing the acceptance “pay for play” known as PAYOLA, which used to be a federal crime… The companies allow themselves to be bought off and controlled major record labels.. KRS is guilty of this himself so he has a lot of nerve trying to speak on destroying hip-hop. He’s one of the people accusing Funkmaster Flex of taking his $40,000+ and not giving him the amount of spins he paid for… And not to mention, KRS is talking about “BACKPACK HIP-HOP”, he’s not speaking up for West Coast being taken out of rotation, he’s not speaking for cats like Geto Boys or UGK or Tech N9NE, he’s talking about s**t like Common, Pitch Black, and that s**t is gray, lifeless and boring, nobody dances to it, nobody bumps that s**t in the streets, not to mention their concerts and stage shows are terrible… KRS-One is the ONLY backpack rapper I’ve ever seen that has an incredible stage show…. But KRS has always been a hypocrite to me.. Mr “Stop The Violence” jumps on a blubbery weak and defenseless PM Dawn.. But he wouldn’t approach Too $hort because dudes rolls too deep, nor Ice Cube when he dissed KRS in “Be True to the Game”, he wouldnt even approach Brother J of X-Clan when he dissed him in “Grand Verbalizer”.. KRS is just another bitter old washed up rapper that pretty much destroyed his own career by disrespecting others because they didnt do s**t the way he thought it should be done.. Like when he dissed Nelly, even though I agree Nelly is nowhere close to being hip-hop the nigga just shut up and did his thing and KRS came out talking s**t about Nelly… And when it comes to being a “GOD” of hip-hop, he could never s**t on the same stool as Rakim.. ever… When I think of all time greatest emcees, KRS was never a lyrical genius, Rakim brought lyrical genius and poeticism to hip-hop, LL Cool J was hip-hop’s first official sex symbol, Run-DMC brought hardcore to hip-hop in the midst of rappers like Melle Mel performing in Cameo costumes and tight pants, not to mention bringing hip-hop to the forefront of commercial America, Public Enemy brought black awareness to hip-hop, NWA and Ice-T brought gangsterism to hip-hop, even Scarface brought credibility to Southern hip-hop… Now with all this being said, ask yourself what would hip-hop be without these cats? It would be missing something that we dont have today.. Now even though KRS One is old school, where would hip-hop be without KRS? The same as it is now… And bottom line… Hip-Hop will never, ever die… Chuck D said a long time ago “When you start hearing people complaining about hip-hop not being what it used to be, it’s a sign of THEM getting old”
True, Soldier Boi is wack, Nelly is wack, but Russell Simmons is a businessman, not a hip-hop conservationist, and for anybody who knows about the record business, if a major label sees you creating a legitimate buzz and moving units on your own they gonna f**k with you. No matter if you talking about “Crank Dat” or “Crank Deez Nutz” if it generates sales it’s gettin put on.. What was Russell gonna say? “Oh man, I would sign you, but you ain’t hip-hop enough”… F**k outta here..

KRS! has a point hip hop use to be about community and unity but we are not mad everything must change nothing stay the same but we just want the young hip-hop community to be accountable. You can’t create art without courage, discipline, and being tied to a tradition. Owing to white supremacist sanctions, enslaved Africans were not allowed to read or write. As a non-literate people, We learned to manifest our genius through what no one could take away our voice and our music the human voice is the greatest. Remember you can’t find your voice unless you’re bouncing off the voices of the dead. Music has been our most powerful creative expression. Hip-hop music is the most important popular music development in the last thirty years. Hip hop allows a kind of marriage between the rhetorical and the musical by means of some of the most amazing linguistic virtuosity we have seen in the English language. Just listen to the lyrical genius of Rakim, Snoop Dogg, or Jay- Z. At the best, these artist respond to their sense at large, with a subversive critique of the society. It has to do with both the description of the conditions under which they’re force to live, as well as a description and depiction of the humanity preserved by those living in such excruciating conditions. It then goes beyond to large critique of the power structure as a whole. When you all have time go to our site and check out our Hip-hop CD we tried. http://www.cornelscorner.com

krs1 is not a hater..he is just telling it the way all educated hip-hop heads already see it. The same shhiit gets played all day and better shiit goes ignored. Sadly, as comercial as Jay-z and Kanye tend to be, i respect them for being the most intelligent rappers getting play. People would rather “Crank dat” than bob their heads to the truth, or thats is what radio seems to think. Basically, when you are a major label, you have more money and you have the radio and video stations in your pocket. It’s not only this way with rap, but R&B and all kinds of music. I rarely even turn on my radio anymore, because i am so disgusted with the state of music. I rather go to youtube and pick what i want to hear; fuuck BET and MTV!

silverboytellem, of course u don’t listen to krs one in the south, ya’ll down south don’t know s**t about hip hop or rap, all y’all listen to is that crunk, southern crap with no subsance. krs 1 is the truth, he is hip hop, and he is def. a teacher when it comes to the origins of hip hop. def jam is one of the reasons hip hop exists. hip hop /rap started in ny, with def jam(started by a white man by the way, haha) something the south don’t know s**t about. he has been official form the beginning, he is man of substance and can school all y’all on hip hop and what it’s really about, how it started, what it represnts. anyone who denies who he is in this truly doesn’t know your history or origin of hip hop.. he could never be irrelevant in hip hop, it’s just that unfortuantely, too many ppl wanna hear commercial, radio garbage….crap sells…

Italian Mami, you can’t talk down on the South because right now the South is the only region that’s REALLY (CD sales/Ringtones/etc)holding hip hop down. And if the South is so devoid of substance, I’d like for you to name a RELEVANT New York act in Hip-Hop/Rap that HASN’T done a collaboration or had a few hits produced by hip hop artists/producers from the South. Yeah DefJam was an integral part of Hip Hop/Rap but that doesn’t mean it’s the be all/end all of all that’s Hip Hop.

As far as KRS ONE goes,I’ve been a fan since I heard ‘Criminal Minded’.He’s gone thru evolutions of sorts ove the years but all in all,he’s about the only artist out the who’s stayed true to his style from beginning til now.I might not agree with everything he says but I respect him as an artist voicing his opinion intelligently.

Any TRUE lover of Hip-Hop KNOWS that every region has their own distinctive style and flavor.Even though you or I might think our region has the tightest artists, it’s not fair to shyt on another region’s artist’s JUST because we’re not feeling them. In all honesty, the South has been RULING the charts over the past several years (even YOU) can’t deny that!

All I’m saying is that if you’re REALLY true to Hip Hop, you respect it in all it’s forms whether you like it or not.

And by the way, DefJam was started by Rick Rubin AND Russel Simmons.

    i feel him….

the BUSINESS side of hiphop is making it hard for real ARTISTS to shine…….

its real artists all over so I cant hate on the south…. I f**ks with Scarface, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Mac (NewOrleans), Soulja Slim(rip), Z-Ro & Trae, etc……

but i dont f**k with that bubblegum jiggaboo s**t…..just like I dont f**k with new york rappers who only talk about how much coke they flip and making it rain…or west coast rappers who ONLY talk about smokin weed and tossin they hood up……

we are probly the most LOST group of people, and the whole world is listening to us…. alot of nagas dont understand the POWER of hiphop….they sleeping on the potential it has…

    “CoIntelPro” got hiphop f**ked up…….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/italianmami37/ italianmami37

mr cunny, as a true lover of hip hop, i only like & respect true hip hop, not garbage that gets played on the radio, period. i understand there are different styles of it and all that, but most of the stuff on the radio in the south(or anywhere else) is that garbage, booty shakin, cars, grills nonsense, that’s my opinion. i have no problem with a down south artist that has music of some substance, but i have no respect for that radio booty garbage. i listen to jeezy, l’il wayne, but not much else from the south. do i have alot of the south music in my ipod? yes cuz it’s got a good beat & is good when i work out, but do i find it quality, no?, do i respect it? no, would i buy it? no. to me, hip hop is a song/lyric of substance not whatever is gonna sell the most on the radio. and yes there is garbage on the radio in other parts of the u.s. too. but hip hop wouldn’t be period if it hadn’t been for ny. anyways. rick rubin started def jam, then russell partnered up with him after it was already started. rick rubin is the one who had the hip hop parties in the dorms… the reason i brought up ppl down south not knowing about hip hop is because ole boy said krs 1 is irrelevant to hip hop, which is blasphemous to me,(haha), because he to me is one of the true hip hop-ologist-haha that can school alot of ppl about what hip hop really is and what it means. now this is just my opinion, ain’t no reason for anyone to get mad, it’s a blog site for ppl opinion’s..it is what it is..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/karmeltoye/ karmeltoye

Imma add my two cents since i am a TRUE HIP HOP HEAD….Krs1 like most people are multifaceted and three dimensional. He has good qualities and bad qualities, but real hip hop fans know that BDP was just as integral in the long-term success of hip hop as RUN-DMC. I say this because of where the world was when Criminal Minded hit. I remember when that tape (yeah i said tape cause they didn’t have a Cd’s back then) came out. I remember how different it was from RUN-DMC & Kurtis Blow & the Beastie
Boys & Fat Boys…BDP was raw and edgy….The Bridge is Over was a beast and KRS killed it…I remember when Scott La Rock was killed…I remember that’s when KRS style changed and he was no longer singing about his 9mm and his tune changed to You Must Learn. Could rap have survived with out BDP? not for me…It needed all the elements of those early artist to give it a solid voice…It needed that for the variety…Before PE was out speaking consciously KRS was.

As far as the state of hip hop…only people who benefit financially from the watered down garbage that is called hip hop today believe that hip is not on life support at the least….I dont agree that its all def jam, but I believe that society as a whole has succ**b; and those of us who are true hip hop heads are to blame. We relaxed on the standards and allowed society to get their hands on our voice. Cause lets be honest….thats what Rap started as…it was the black community voice…not anymore…

I see it happening all over again with Poetry/Spoken word…but thats a story for another time. As Poetry/Spoken Word artist I refuse to compromise in order to keep the credibility of what I do….Hip Hop used to have that same standard; but once it was compromised it was exploited and Black Exploitation Television (BET) helped do that when they sold out to a white man.

I am not going to waste my breathe speaking on souljah boi or any of those other black exploitation artist. They are what they are they make the white people feel safe…they foster the same step n fetchit (his real name was Lincoln Theodore Monroe Andrew Perry) mentality that black face/minstrel shows did….and while during their time minstrel shows served a purpose, people of color eventually realized what it meant; and what it did to how we were viewed by society. So i will let today’s step n fetchit serve their purpose; and wait/help to usher in the coming age of true conscious hip hop again. and that my penny and a quarter

we can all can have an opinion, why ppl gettin mad, s**t, it ain’t that serious… and if you actually read what i wrote, i said I HAVE NO RESPECT FOR THE BULLS**T RAP ON THE RADIO, no where in that sentence did i say anything negative about outkast, goodie mob… i simply said i hate the garbage on the radio, and i have no respect for the bulls**t ppl call rap that makes the most money…all that commercial bulls**t..and the bottom line is HIP HOP AND RAP WOULD NOT BE WITHOUT N.Y.-PERIOD! that’s not an opinion, that’s a fact. and if anyone denies or disputes that fact, they clearly don’t know their hip hip history.. but wtf ppl gettin mad for? s**t it ain’t that serious that brothas gotta start havin temper tantrums cuz ppl have a different opinion than them…
