Now available on iTunes… The Watermelon Whisper Song. Okay, not really, but it’s true… rap is getting super cliche nowadays. At least the new kids on the block are offering new shit.

At this rate, the culture would have been raped and pillaged for all its worth. Don’t believe me? Check out this informative PSA brought to you by Nasir Jones and Nick Cannon.

kind of tasteless to me. I think they could came at it at another angle

wow… how trashy! I am in total agreement with “ThangThang”… and is Nick Cannon really a credible voice for the future of Hip-Hop??? I think not!

This one goes into the sad but true category. Over the past 10 years hip hop has become ridiculus. It is now the unquestionably undeniable undisputed STUPIDEST form of “music” (and I use the term loosely) in the world. Everything that NaS said is right. We have the most ignornat songs playing on the radio and the most ignorant artists creating them. And it seems that if you aren’t making ignornant/degrating music then you can’t really get that far. (prime example is “Little Brother”) And if by some minute/remote chance someone actually comes along and makes a song that actually makes sense then they have create an “ignorant image” to pull it off and basically trick people into listening to them. (Prime example is Drake now and Ludacris in 2001) Hip hop is nothing more than a real life WWE. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about check out “Cryme Tyme” on the http://www.wwe.com or that other shucking and jiving dude with the dreads whose name escapes me right now. They are the representations of the “hip hop” world to impressionable young minds. And that is truly a sad sight to see. In my opinion hip hop is not only DEAD it was cremated when Soulja Boy came out. SAD but TRUE….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jetskibro/ jetskibro

Trashy?? Are u kidding? This is exactly the buffonary that hip-hop/rap has become and our people are eating it up. Do your homework people. Do you remember this is what massa used to have us do back in slavery. Dress up in black face, do a stupid dance and sing for his entertainment. Do you realize that a lot of he dances that they do today, are identicle to the shucking, jiving and buffonary dances they had our ancestors doing as slaves? Do people even listen to the lyrics anymore. All u need is a hot beat, a stupid dance, degrading lyrics, a hot hook and a$$ shaking everywhere and you win BET awards and sell millions. Come on people! It’s not tasteless at all. This is what white America thinks of us and Nick and one of my favorite lyricists of all time, Nas, is just bringing this to the forefront, smacking us in the face with it. We have discussed this topic privately in our own little circles but that has done nothing. Like the infamous line in Spike Lee’s movie School Daze (notice the word “daze” and not “days” cause that’s what we’re in, a stupid a$$ daze)………WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jetskibro/ jetskibro

Right on magikk!!! Black folk need to wake the hell up about a lot of things. We are our worst enemy!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Diamondz9311/ Diamondz9311

I don’t like it, because of the history behind Blackface. It was not funny! White people dressed up that way back in the day because they didn’t want black people to act in movies and they was also making fun of black people. I am very upset to see this hot mess! Black people painting their face and broadcasting it like this!! Go and look at the history on Blackface it will really make you mad, this is terrible!!! STOP PLEASE!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/adlibra/ adlibra

I think the values in our hip hop culture as it is today is sooo upside down and without substance that a strong and positive and well-intended message like this will end up being ridiculed and criticized!

Today, hip hop lacks balance and variety, and people who do the music because they love it….its not an artform today, but a big bundle of jingles and cadences…it feels like all popular songs, videos, etc are written and produced by ONE very small group of people…everything is so formulaic and generic.

Gone are the days when I could hear some older mature people sing love songs of substance. What can 16, 17, 21 year olds really tell me about LOVE or relationships?? but they are the ones that dominate! for godsake why do we have to feel that Mary J. Blige is OLD?? But we do, dont we? LOL how can we be surprised when 98% of so-called R&B is about F-ing some girl and what she gotta do to show a dude she loves him or what he can buy her or take her or give her…..Frankly these kids have no real experience to sing from!!

Hip Hop today is stale! repetitive! formulaic! and damn near hanging on a thread!
I wanna hear poets and artists in the midst of all these buffoons out there who are just singing jingles and preschool rhymes and singalongs…VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE!
    -peace

I’m not even going to get all deep with it because, i know most people on here can see what’s right in front of their face. Nas is exactly right! There are too many people involved in Hip-Hop that don’t come from a Hip-Hop background. Too much down south s**t, too much grown ass people letting little kids determine what’s hot and what’s not. There are not enough black owned labels any more. Hip-Hop was at it’s best during the Russell Simmons Def Jam days. The Shug Knight Death Row days. The Master P No Limit days, and so on.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SEDUCTIVE-ANGEL/ SEDUCTIVE-ANGEL

I don’t think that it was meant to be funny, but as a wake up call, to let us know this is what is going to eventually happen. Simply put back in the day hip hop had a message, it was a way to inform people the injustices in what was going on and now it is nonsense, it has no purpose but to make the dollars. There is no message behind it any longer. Think about it Soulja Boy, does his songs have a meaning, no it is just there to make money, and the sad part is, is that the white folks are enjoying this because it is being used and turned around to their liking. So to me this video was shocking but true and oh so sad.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MistaQzu/ MistaQzu

    i TOTALLY agree with Nas!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Lifeiswutumakit/ Lifeiswutumakit

Ahahahhahhahahahahahaha lmao This s**t is hilarious. And apparantly some people don’t understand that subtle approaches to sending messages DOESN’T work very often. Sometimes, you got to throw cold water in people’s faces to wake them up.

This right here pretty much sums up most MAINSTREAM HIP-POP of today. If a person got offended by this…apparantly you missed the point.

If the truth hurts, just say “ouch!”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jetskibro/ jetskibro

yes white people dressed up in black face to mock our buffonery. Hell, black folk painted their faces black and did the same thing. That’s exactly one of the points that Nas and Nick were making. We are buffons and being mocked but it’s so much deeper. Hip-hop/rap that’s being played across the airwaves and on radio is “black face” buffonery, ignorance, mockery, etc, etc. Wake up! The black community has a problem when being corrected.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jetskibro/ jetskibro

Amen Lifeiswutumakit! Jesus H Christ, some folk still just dont get it!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BuBLepOpELEcTriC9/ BuBLepOpELEcTriC9

Damn the sad truth is that the way things are right now, it is sort of like modernday shucking and jiving, with all the non-sense music that is out. I feel that you can be open to listen to some fun and superficial songs but when that becomes all the public sees or it becomes the most flamboyant aspect of black culture that is publicized it gets to be degrading to our people. And if we continue to let this go and not care about substance and quality who knows? it may get this far. People are being exploited just like in slave days, the only difference is that today they are either to greedy, ignorant or careless to realize and STOP the madness.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Stan_Vinyl/ Stan_Vinyl

LOL… That is 100% on hit! And ummmmm… If Nick has Nas, Em might wanna sit his A$$ down somewhere before he get Ethered up! lol.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/persuasive_lyric/ persuasive_lyric

Say what you will about Nick, but it’s the truth about Hip_Hop.
These so called rappers today have taken our music and our culture and raped it into the submission. Hip_Hop was about Black rights, movements and knowledge. Now these uncle toms have taken and turned the words of freedom in to profaned lyrics and disillusioned generations with lies of their life style, money, women, and cars. And they have put knowledge in the closet and set ignorance right out front.
We can only blame ourselves for given CEO’s the nooses to hang us with. Hip_Hop screamed freedom, but it chokes on the propaganda that these no talents have spewed out over their gold teeth and right into our ears, claiming they are speaking truth. I wish Nick and Nas would just go all out and say the names of all uncle toms out there.
Most of these rappers are nothing more than jigga boos.
If knowledge is power than ignorance is death.

Because the true art form of hip hop passed away and it’s only up to those who truely love her to resurrect this beautiful queen we once called Hip Hop. And i can’t speak for anyone else, but i miss Her too much, so i totally agree with Esco!!

I’ve said it before, Rap is the new Disco.

You know what’s bad? Some ignant dude (or group of dudes) will think the beat is hot and make a similar record, stupid dance for, or even sample this song. I’m gonna start a new millenium version of Public Enemy complete with S1Ws and start protesting and molly-woppin these “rappers” at their shows; and callin ‘em out on records. See how fast I get assassinated.

I’ll call out one right now. Mr. Collipark. He’s been bankrolling ignorance for a while. Look at his “discography”. He’s a heckuva beatmaker and moneymaker, but c’mon dude.

Remember in the 90s when rap got a lil TOO happy and polished? Know what happened? Bone Thugs came out with some real stuff. Fresh music and stories (street reporting). Now they’re legends

Nas does not care about Hip Hop. Nas cares about Nas.

There has always been “shuck and jive” type hip hop artist. Who remembers Kwamae, Nice and Smooth, Audio Two? Kats who ain’t saying nothing conscience just pushing the latest fades (jewelry, cars, club scene, porn, etc), dances (ya’ll know ‘em), and styles.

Truth? Naz is simply attacking the currrent southern rap dominance in the game. Check the beat and rhythm of the video = southern rap style. Check the lyrical cadence = southern rap styling. Many up north think the south is full of dumb ass black people too dumb to leave the south. Happy to exist under the thumb of “Massa”. This is just Nas calling southern rap artist a bunch of Jiggaboos. Beat’em or join’em. Nas wants to beat’em and that’s cool. If Nas can out sell them he can usher in a new era of conscience, “empowering” hip hop music. I don’t see it but I’m not the prophet, Nas is.

Nas wants to play politics with Hip Hop but it won’t work. Hip Hop has seen the greatest conscience rap group ever in Public Enemy and one thing is clear; it’s hard to dance and have fun to “Fight the Power!” The consumer decides whats hot and whats not. And conscience Hip Hop is just not hot. It’s not selling and so record execs aren’t pushing it.

Ultimately, the record companies goal is to exploit all dimensions of Hip Hop including conscience rap. So much so that the conscience groups and artist who were real about their message came to realize that the only way not to be exploited was to quit making their music. True conscience rap is allergic to the workings of the Hip Hop industry.

Hip Hop is however a big tent and there is room in Hip Hop for stupidity, irreverence, and shallowness. Besides I’m loving what I call “strip club rap” with songs like, “I’m in love with a stripper” and “Ha – (paper chaser)”

Once political rap was cool, then it became cool to “f–k the police”, then smoke weed. Now it’s white tees, rims, hole in the wall strip clubs – the south.

    Seasons change.

As one of the few salty crackers that will be commenting on this–
it may surprise you to read that I agree with the premise of the video. But, the “rap is dying” idea actually applies to popular music as a whole (in my opinion). Rap isn’t the only genre that’s losing substance. Even the songs (rap or not) that pretend to carry any kind of message usually only hint at some watered-down cliche’. Maybe the reason is that– as a society (black or not), we generally have become lazy, have relatively easy lives (compared to earlier generations), and have no real crises to endure. My prediction is that– the current state of our society will actually produce some kind of real crisis sometime soon. And, like it or not– that’s when “real music” with a message will return.

Let me set the record straight: Hip hop and rap is not dead! The commercial sh!t they play on the radio that wins BET, VH1 and MTV awards is dead. Real hip hop and rap still thrives underground but most people don’t get a chance to hear it. Talib, The Roots, Mos Def, Nas and the likes are still putting out cd’s that are incredible but we never hear them cause it’s conscious, makes sense, not degrading our community. So lets keep on making the Lil Waynes of the world rich by degrading our community with lyrics that are mentally, spiritually and physically killing us. It’s not the white man’s fault, it’s our fault. Ignorance kills.

The problem is not the ARTISTS……..the problem is the people BEHIND the artist.

They control who gets promoted and who doesn’t. Every rapper/singer is BROKE with an aspiring dream, thererfore, someone decided to put them on stage and make a profit and if that artist wants to stay in business they will SANG THE SONGS like IKE told the to sang em…

And those that MAKE SENSE and have messages and metaphors in their songs dont get ANY advertisement. I know some underground rappers that will DESTROY these commercial thug rappers….regular people that have everday jobs that can freestyle and lyrcailly demolish these bulls**t artists…however, even if an artist really has talent, they’re not aloud to USE IT because the industry feels as tho it wont sell…

In some ways I agree with Nas but, this is the same nigga that made Oochie Wallie lol. Whack rappers been out forever now. I think Nas wants money (something he ain’t been getting lately). And I’m guessing he’s talking about guys like Soulja Boy and them Stanky Leg niggas. Yes, the s**t is whack if you ask me. But if you ask a million other people, they love it. Ya’ll need to realize that Soulja Boy IS NOT buying his own records. And guys like him are the reason hip-hop is dying, then other hip-hop artist should be ashamed of themselves if they can’t do better. Don’t blame these youngsters for the so-called “Death of Hip-Hop.” If anything, blame the fans for buying it. Nas is so hypocritical and contradictory it’s a shame. He’s talking about a sell-out “Mr. I Hate Jay-Z” but now he’s Jay’s right hand man. Nas should be worried about resurrecting his career rather than resurrecting hip-hop….

its sad …. but in actuality its true …. think about it … 15 years ago we had Tupac, Rakim, Nas,Common, Ghostface & The Wu …. even jigga was a lil bit more on top of his game …. now we got Weezy, and Souljah Boy whose mere presence scare me from having children all together its a fashion show and children are out here killing each other to dress and floss and drive high end cars … modern rap culture fuels the desires of kids today white and black …… i remember being in high school and hearing Nas “Big Thangs” and that was part of the soundtrack to my life…. Tupac’s “Blasphemy” told me to keep my eyes open and conscious of everything ..Jay Z’s “Lucky Me” … taught me i should have a heart….now rap is nothing more than repetitive hooks and money flossing …. now as a 30 year old black man from the south side of chicago … i am a first hand witness to the decline of black culture and i have lived life through all the hip hop eras …. and its truly sad to say …. but if we as a culture don’t exercise any self control then all will be lost …

Nas n’ Cannon bein’ damn real about the whole thing. Hip Hop is not supposed to be what corporate offices can sell, and if it’s not marketable, then we can’t help you get your music out there… That ain’t how it’s supposed to be. There’s supposed to be room for Pharoah Monch as well as Soulja Boy Tell Em. When corporate offices only look at who sells the most and only wants copycats of those styles… That essentially leaves other artists with no means of finding a true fanbase… that stifles and kills hip hop.

WEll.. OF COURSE ITS TRUE. WHat.. YOu thought it was something new? We tried to warn you. We as in the TRUE Hip Hop Community, those of us that really had a deep respect for the art form and were lucky enough to have lived through the Golden Age of Hip Hop. We warned back then and we won for the moment. As soon as Hip Hops finest passed away.. including Tupac Biggie and Eazy E to name a few. Once the most popular yet concsious rapper was ASSASINATED, that opened the flood gates for this GARBAGE @SS Rap music you began to hear from that point forward. Support that? NEVER. Get your MIND together…

Personally I can’t hate on Soulja Boy because he doesn’t cuss in his music, he’s self made, and he makes feel good music which is what music is suppose to be about. He’s not “bangin” or promoting hangin on the block. I think young men will look at him and try and do something positive.

People are talkin about being rich. Even rich people are going broke nowadays. The sad truth is, people don’t know the difference between being rich and being wealthy.

As far as this video goes, and the state of “hip-hop”…
The fact of the matter is, as much as I hate to say it, we have no choice but to accept the way it’s headed. Yes, there are still a few of us who remember what REAL rap was like, but us 20+ year olds need to realize that there is a new generation in now. And they enjoy simple, ignorant music.
Hip-Hop died a LONG time ago. Not when Nas said it was dead, not when Soulja Boy became successful… Hip-Hop died when artists stopped rapping for the love of music, and started rapping for a check. Even Jay-Z (who, by the way came out in 1996… WAY before Soulja Boy even thought of rapping) will tell you, quick… “I’m not a rapper, I’m a hustler.”
Everyone who says Hip-Hop is “gonna die”, cuz their own sales are suffering, or their music isn’t supporting them and their families, are being hypocrites.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Coolerthanbeingcool/ Coolerthanbeingcool

Listen man, I don’t feel there’s anything wrong with getting paid for your craft, but changing your craft simply TO get paid is a different thing entirely, that’s where artistic integrity kicks in, ask any painter, any film maker, any novelist. It’s the same all around. If you’re getting paid to do what you already do, that’s one thing… the problem comes in when you say “I’m gonna spit these bars cause I gotta eat”. If you’re not already doing it? You have no business doing it. The ones who only do it for a check are not artists. The ones who were doing it before they could make a dime doing so, are the artists, and if they get paid to spit, so be it. Guys like 50 Cent and Jay-Z are not artists to me, they may have a hot sound, but they got into the game for the wrong reason. Even Carmen Bryan said it herself, Nas is an artist FIRST. When Columbia was getting funny with the money because Nas wouldn’t rush to finish Illmatic, he still was like whatever, it’s done when it’s done…for him, it’s more about the album feeling right, then selling right… and that’s why he gets the respect from me that he gets.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_bookoo_tweaks_/ _bookoo_tweaks_

I agree with MPyre. Things change! When hip hop first came out, “real musicians” complained about it at well. Everything has its time. Rap is not the same as hip hop, and it’s foolish for anyone to expect it to be. I never needed any entertainer to “school” me or uplift me, so I never really got into hip hip to begin with. I’m all about the beats and vibe of songs, and don’t really pay attention to lyrics. So rap and rappers are alright with me. Why is Nas upset about silly dances? Like that’s gonna be the downfall of the black race? Even if Souljah Boy wasn’t around, his music still wouldn’t sell (except for die-hard fans). The problem is not rappers selling out, it’s old emcees who don’t realize that their time is pretty much done.

wow love this. living in germany i started listening to hip hop when no one in the *white community* really knew what it was all about(this was back in 92/93, ppl like nas and a tribe called quest ruled). it is sad and shocking to see how things have changed since then and how everything related to black people and black culture has simply become a mass product without any uniqueness and specialty. seeing ppl like asher roth doing something the mass has the nerve to call hip hop is devastating. all it is nowadays is a way for ppl to make fast money, the true meaning of hip hop is gone. the video is brilliant.

Hip Hop is dying a shameful and painful death!!!!!!!!!!! Remember “Let Your Chain Hang Low”? That was an old southern ditty that whites sang to make fun of the blacks in chains and it was made into a hip hop hit. This music is going to the dogs for real. I can’t even stand to listen to the radio for more than 30 seconds. Who can deny the deplorable state of hip hop music? Nothing but money, hoes and bank rolls! This is brain shrinking music. This IS BUFOONERY.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/crookedIrida/ crookedIrida

Listen, dispite what you think of the source, Nas’ points is very well taken…However, I do believe it’s a little bit misguided…Hip-hop transecnts genres, borders, and culture all over the world…the originators have control over hip-hop’s origin, they planted the seeds, but we have to accept is that they don’t have control over what it’s seedlings will become…what I do believe that it will evolve, or devovle if you so choose, into somethin somewhat alien to it’s founders..but that’s what usually happens in music…listen to early jazz and gospel verses their contemporary counterparts…hell you think Bo Diddly and Chuck Berry can relate to System of a Down or Gwar? As consumers, we have to ensure that they’ll always be a market for Jay-zs and Scarfacs and newer generation of emcees who embody what hip-hop should be…now exactly what it should be is a entirely different discussion…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Vertigo2001/ Vertigo2001

Its funny how people say hip hop has changed. Im from Texas and ever since hip hop moved down south some artist seem to have a discrepancy with it, and I hear it from a bunch of up north hardcore hip hop artists. They keep stating hip hop is going to be dead but these are the same artist who came out with mysogynistic songs back in the day like OOchie Wally, and Big Pimpin, and why in the hell is Nick Cannon in this also? Didnt he have a song out with R. Kelly back in the day called “Im a Gigolo?”
The point Im making is these artist are contradicting themselves. Im a down south girl and the music we have down here has always been like that. We’ve always had little dances and cats down here rolling on candy paint, grilled out, thick chicks, in the club doing DJ Jubilees Get It Ready Ready” dances its ALWAYS been like that ( before the south even blew up). And the up north cats didnt care about us, they used to laugh at us back then and thought down south rappers were jokes. Now all of a sudden hip-hop is dying because everyone wanna know about the south?? The same up north cats who put cornbread fed chicks from down here in they videos? Wearing piece and chains just like the South? Yeah uh-huh.

I agree with you. But its Survival of the fittest. and Evolution. Look what happened to R&B Big Band and Jazz. What about those ppl that love this music that seen their industry go to the way side as rap emerged and made a killin in the golden era sampling their beats and killing their market.

If real hip hop cant evolve and survive we have the hits like we got old jackson’s songs of the 70′s From working in the clubs. This new music is less violent which calls for a safer club enviorment. And makes a lot of money for the club. In which supports my hustle. I’m making money off the music being less violent. Its more fun and slap happy. If hip hop dies and Shuk and Jive blows up. I’ll just listen to my hot shyt of the 90′s roll down my windows and blast that shyt down tha block till tha cop’s write me a ticket for loud music or noise pollution.

    amen!

All the new generation hip-hop heads have a choice. They can decide what they won’t to hear. Some are making a bad choice of what to listen to and that shapes the direction of hip-hop. It’ about being smarter about the hip-hop you choose to listen to.

I’ve never commented on these stories before. But I don’t know why people are saying Nas and Jay-Z are old and need to quit. I mean they were young once to. 2Pac was 19 when he did Brenda’s got a baby. LL Cool J was 16 when he came out Def Jam’s first artist. They were able to produce lyrically content music at a yong age so why can’t todays young rappers do the same? Also Nas and Jay-Z didn’t call all the rappers that came before them old. They showed respect to Rakim, The Sugar Hill Gang and all the older rappers of their time. I never heard them say Rakim was old and needs to stop. This younger generation is self centered and think rap and the world began when they were born and have no respect for the past and people that paved the way for them. Lil Wayne’s Whip It Like A Slave is a prime example of lack of respect.

Based on the illiteracy and ignorance displayed in many of the comments below, I think Nas is a little late. Hip Hop has been dead for years and the “coonery” has already hypnotized many of our community. But this form of cultural genocide is our own fault. W.E.B. DuBois’s “talented 10th” has not risen up to guide our people to it’s full potential. They moved to the suburbs and left those with no consciousness to rot in the South. This is what it looks like when the “sons of former slaves” refuse to break their own shackles of mental slavery: mass marketed coonery in the name of “goons and niggaz.”

F**K Nas! He’s the biggest hypocrite of them all. Nothing bugs me more than to see people like him and Jesse Jackson always want to play the race card while they’re making back alley deals with the people we’re psychologically conditioned to hate. although it may appear as such, hip hop is not dying a slow death. it’s actually maturing and evolving. the northeast’s child is merely undergoing a frustating, yet highly entertaining, phase of puberty or maybe even a tinge of mid-life crisis. hence, the neccesity for such excess to accompany the art itself. perhaps what we’re experiencing in hip-hop is a universal cylic rhythm which manifests itself as a cultural regional identity. for some (if not many), it’s southern persona causes quite the discomfort which is nothing less than what occured during it’s time spent in miami and on the west coast. the only difference is the apparent impact hip-hop’s southern personifaction is having on the industry and it’s profound influence on the masses. the universal cycle will continue and in time hip-hop, upon undergoing somewhat of an alchemic pounding, will find it’s way back home – enlightened, knowledgeable, wise, transformed and full-grown.
