Legendary R&B singer Gladys Knight had some harsh words for the genre of Hip-Hop in a recent interview.
During an interview with BlackNews.com, Knight said that Hip-Hop had created opportunities for young artists, but the slammed the genre of music, claiming it had set back African-Americans as a race.

“It’s been bad, in my opinion, as far as the quality of the music and the stories that they tell. It’s one thing to be raw about your history, but they took it to another level and it became vulgar,” Knight said.

She also claimed that Hip-Hop had not “elevated our industry musically,” before blaming the music for a number of issues within the African-American community.

“It definitely has not elevated us as African-Americans, because we show disrespect for our partners, men and women,” Knight stated. “I believe we have lowered our self-esteem with these performances and presentations.”

I thought gladys was more educated in music. Is she saying an art of expression set her people back? Not my black people. My culture helped get Barrack elected. Hip-hop has done more for race relations than any other music genre. You have a choice in hip-hop on who you want to listen to. White kids are growing up listening to hip-hop. When im gladys age Im going to have to prove to my grand kids that hip-hop was started by black people. (sound familiar?… rock n roll). Mrs. Gladys please dont insult my people and give an art of expression that much power. WE ARE KINGS AND QUEENS. We just listen to hip-hop like president Obama. STOP SPREADING HATE! Oprah is waking up, Gladys should too.

Yeah, fresh2def73 you and all who agree with you are the real fools. You follow these trash talkers that make money to keep you dumb.
What is your biggest ambition? Dont tell me….. making big money.
How you gonna get there? Don’t tell me……Sellin records or slinging dope, right?

Now, even if thats not your mentality, the majority of new skool rap listeners wanna be jus that.

Believing whole-heartedly in what they see.

    Don’t be a fool.

These rich white Label owners and A&R’s make them huge dollars off of keepin you and me dumb and out of university and the work place.

    Get at me.

I think Gladys is a damn fool, if that was so. Then her and the odie goldie crowd would still be selling milions.I may be wrong, but I doubt that Gladys ever sold a million rocords. But to make this short and sweet, a lot of the thing s that are said on rap songs are seen on regular television (not cable) so dont hate these young men for putting words together and making a living from it. You must mentor and role model for your own kids, dont look to anyone else to do it.

GLADYS IS RIGHT ON THE MONEY. TO ALL YOU ARROGANT YOUNG PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE NERVE TO CALL SOMEONE AN OLD ANYTHING, YOU’RE PROVING HER POINT. THESE RAP ARTIST TODAY HAVE NO REPECT FOR ANYONE OR ANYTHING. THEY DON’T SPREAD LOVE BUT THEY CAN SURE SPREAD HATE AND VENOM. EVERYTHING THEY TALK ABOUT IS PURE VANITY AND ABOUT WHO THEY WANT TO MAIM OR KILL. I GREW UP WITH HIP HOP BEING MADE IN THE STREETS OF BROOKLYN. IT WAS A JOY TO HEAR AND I COULD’NT WAIT UNTIL THE WEEKEND CAME SO THAT WE COULD GO O JAM IN THE PARK. I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THIS NEW RAP MUSIC IS GOOD FOR. WHAT GOOD IS IT DOING? WELL IT MAKES PEOPLE LIKE JAY-Z RICH AS ROSEVELT BUT WHAT ELSE IS IT GOOD FOR? I HATE IT AND I WON’T LET ANY CHILD THAT I LOVE LISTEN TO IT WITHOUT ME PUTTING MY TWO CENTS IN. I ADVISE EVERYONE TO DO THE SAME.TO THOSE OF YOU WHO TURN ON THAT STUPID BOX AND PUT THE CHILDREN IN FRONT OF IT WITHOUT GUIDANCE, YOU’RE CHILDREN ARE GOING TO BE DOOMED. THEY ARE BEING BRAINWASHED AND YOU DON’T EVEN SEE IT. GO AND DO RESERCH ON THE WORDS OF MOST OF THESE RAP SONGS. YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY. TRUST ME HIP HOP IS DEAD!
