Update: Aaron McGruder Explains Obama Comments
In a letter to Editor and Publisher Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder writes:
“For a long time now, I have tried to keep my opinions on the election and Barack Obama to myself. I occasionally do speaking engagements, which are not open to the press, and unfortunately some of my comments have been twisted around in a silly manner. The claim that I asserted our new President was not Black is categorically false.
“I have seen an endless stream of Black pundits on TV pontificating about the significance of President Obama’s election – many of them making reference to the 3/5th’s clause in the constitution regarding slaves. The point I was making is that this is not an accurate comparison.
“Barack is the son of an immigrant, not the descendant of slaves. It’s like comparing a half-Japanese man to the oppressed Chinese who built the American railroads. Yes, they are both Asian, but it is not an honest or accurate comparison. We all share the common experiences of being Black in America today – we do not all share a common history. A history that in part makes us who we are – and in some cases (as with the psychological damage that still lingers from slavery) holds us back. These are not, I believe, insignificant distinctions.
“I did say I was cautiously pessimistic about Obama’s Presidency – but this is simply acknowledging the reality of an American Empire that is out of control and on the verge of collapse. Let us not forget that on the eve of the election, we witnessed a near-trillion dollar robbery of the US treasury. That robbery is still taking place. I do not blame President Obama, but I do not believe the financial and corporate interests that own and control this country will fold so easily. I do not question the integrity of the man as much as the power of his office – which I believe has greatly diminished over the years. I believe the Federal Reserve Bank, the Military Industrial Complex, and the massive corporate interests that run this country have more power than our new President. I hope I am wrong.
“After 9/11, I witnessed most of this country become obsessed with squashing dissent and silencing critics. I hope this election does not turn Black America towards this same, fascist mind state; but already I am starting to see it, and it saddens me greatly. I absolutely wish our new President and his family success and safety. But after all I have witnessed in my lifetime, and especially in the last eight years, I am not ready to lay down my skepticism or my outrage for this government. To do so would be unwise and, ironically enough, anti-American.”
Maybe I’m reading this wrong but it seems that McGruder still believes that Kenyans did not experience slavery, so Obama cannot relate to the African-American experience of slavery in the United States? And by extension, that Black immigrants from the West Indies, etc. did not experience slavery and are not “descendants of slaves.” This is not true! The Portugese and Arabs enslaved Kenyans and transported them to the United States! Yes, the experience of slavery in the United States is unique but that does not mean that Africans in the diaspora did not suffer the same atrocities. Marcus Garvey was born in Jamaica but didn’t think this made him different from Blacks born in America.
McGruder’s illustration of a Japanese American’s experience being different from a Chinese American’s is disingenuous because the Japanese suffered their own brand of racism in this country after Pearl Harbor. Why shouldn’t Asians in America use this as a point of commonality as opposed to another reason to separate themselves? “My oppression wasn’t the same as yours.” This is akin to saying that a Jewish person born in the United States can’t embrace the history of the Holocaust, which is just insane. I was born and raised in the United States but my father is an immigrant. Does this mean he can’t relate to my experience in this country as a Black man?
What if someone digs now into Michelle Obama’s lineage and finds out she’s half Cherokee (like many Black Americans) does this make her less representative in his eyes? Come on Aaron, you’re better than this. Stop looking for ways to divide us.

the president does not run this country and there is no government check this out……………………….Sunday, June 8, 2008, marked the last day of this year’s annual Bilderberg meeting, which took place in Chantilly, Virginia. The American Friends of Bilderberg, an American Bilderberg front group, which organizes the American participant list for the annual Bilderberg conference, issued a rare press release this year. It stated that, “The Conference will deal mainly with a nuclear free world, cyber terrorism, Africa, Russia, finance, protectionism, US-EU relations, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Islam and Iran. Approximately 140 participants will attend.”1
Bilderberg, which has been meeting annually since 1954, is a highly secretive international think tank and some say, policy-forming group made up of representatives from North America and Western Europe and was founded by Joseph Retinger, Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands and Belgian Prime Minister Paul Van Zeeland. The Bilderberg Steering Committee, made up of around 30 people, (with no official list available), “decided that it would invite 100 of the most powerful people in Europe and North America every year to meet behind closed doors at a different five-star resort. The group stresses secrecy: What’s said at a Bilderberg conference stays at a Bilderberg conference.”2
Usually, the Bilderberg Conference is held in Europe for three years in a row, with the fourth year holding a meeting in North America. However, the previous North American conference was held in 2006 in Ottawa. So why did they break tradition to hold the conference in North America this year? Speculation abounds around a discussion of a possible attack on Iran, the American-centered global financial crisis, as well as the current US Presidential elections.
Bilderberg has long been an important forum for up-and-coming politicians of Western nations to be introduced to the global financial elite; the heads of the major multinational corporations, international banks, world financial institutions, global governing bodies, think tanks, and powerful individuals of the likes of David Rockefeller and various European monarchs, including Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, daughter of founding member, Prince Bernhard, as well as Queen Sofia and King Juan Carlos of Spain.
According to The Globe and Mail, such Canadian Prime Ministers have, in the past, (often before becoming Prime Minister), attended a Bilderberg Conference as a guest, including Pierre Trudeau, Jean Chretien, Paul Martin and Stephen Harper.3 Tony Blair attended Bilderberg before becoming Prime Minister,4 as did the current British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, who also recently called for the establishment of a “new world order.”5
Interestingly, as the Washington Post reported, Vernon E. Jordon, a high-powered American executive, who sits on several corporate boards, including American Express, Xerox, J.C. Penney, Dow Jones, and Sara Lee, to name a few, also happens to be a very close friend of former President Bill Clinton. However, “it was Jordan who first introduced then-Gov. Clinton to world leaders at their annual Bilderberg gathering in Germany in 1991. Plenty of governors try to make that scene; only Clinton got taken seriously at that meeting, because Vernon Jordan said he was okay.”6 Clinton subsequently became President.
Barack and Bilderberg
Recently, there has been much discussion about Barack Obama having possibly attended the recent Bilderberg conference in Virginia. This speculation arose when Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton sneaked off for a secretive meeting while in Virginia. As the AP reported, “Reporters traveling with Obama sensed something might be happening between the pair when they arrived at Dulles International Airport after an event in Northern Virginia and Obama was not aboard the airplane. Asked at the time about the Illinois senator’s whereabouts, [Obama spokesman Robert] Gibbs smiled and declined to comment.”7
The press that had been traveling with Obama were not made aware of the secretive meeting until the plane that they assumed Obama would be present on was moving down the runway, prompting many angry questions from the press towards Obama’s spokesman, Robert Gibbs. One reported asked Gibbs, “Why were we not told about this meeting until we were on the plane, the doors were shut and the plane was about to taxi to take off?” to which he responded, “Senator Obama had a desire to do some meetings, others had a desire to meet with him tonight in a private way and that is what we are doing.” This preceded another question, “Is there more than one meeting, is there more than one person with whom he is meeting?” Gibbs simply replied, “I am not going to get into all the details of the meeting.” He again later repeated that, “There was a desire to do some meetings tonight, he was interested in doing them, others were interested in doing them, and to do them in a way that was private.”8
On Friday, June 6, it was reported that Bilderberg tracker, Jim Tucker, “called Obama’s office today to ask if he had attended Bilderberg. A campaign spokeswoman refused to discuss the matter but would not deny that Obama had attended Bilderberg.”9
Bilderberg to Pick Obama’s Vice President
As the Financial Times reported in May of this year, Barack Obama appointed James A. Johnson, the former CEO of Fannie Mae, “to head a secret committee to produce a shortlist for his vice-presidential running mate.” A short list was discussed by the article, which listed, other than Hillary Clinton, “Jim Webb, the former secretary of the navy, Vietnam veteran and senator for Virginia; Tim Kaine, the governor of Virginia; John Edwards, the former vice-presidential candidate in 2004; Ted Strickland, the governor of Ohio; and Kathleen Sebelius, the governor of Kansas.” Other potential nominees include “Sam Nunn, the former chairman of the Senate armed services committee; and Wesley Clark, the former head of Nato in Europe.”10
James A. Johnson, the man Obama asked to pick his running mate, played the same role for John Kerry back in 2004, and he selected John Edwards. As the New York Times reported, “Several people pointed to the secretive and exclusive Bilderberg conference of some 120 people that this year drew the likes of Henry A. Kissinger, Melinda Gates and Richard A. Perle to Stresa, Italy, in early June, as helping [Edwards] win Mr. Kerry’s heart. Mr. Edwards spoke so well in a debate on American politics with the Republican Ralph Reed that participants broke Bilderberg rules to clap before the end of the session.” The Times further reported, “His performance at Bilderberg was important,” said a friend of Mr. Kerry who was there. ”He reported back directly to Kerry. There were other reports on his performance. Whether they reported directly or indirectly, I have no doubt the word got back to Mr. Kerry about how well he did.”11
James A. Johnson, Vice Chairman of Perseus, a merchant banking firm, is also a director of Goldman Sachs, Forestar Real Estate Group, Inc., KB Home, Target Corporation and UnitedHealth Group Inc., is also a member of the American Friends of Bilderberg, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission and is an honorary trustee of the Brookings Institution.12 It is likely that Obama’s running mate will be chosen by Johnson at this years Bilderberg Conference.
Notable among this year’s Bilderberg guests are Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius, who the Financial Times reported was on Johnson’s short list of nominees. In fact, Sebelius is the only person mentioned as a possible running mate in the Financial Times article that was officially listed on the Bilderberg list of attendees.13 Could this be a sign that she may be the chosen one? Time will tell. However, another Democratic politician present at the meeting was Tom Daschle, so perhaps he is working his way back into politics.
Don’t Forget McCain
Just because Obama’s popularity dwarfs that of McCain’s, is not reason enough to ignore the other candidate. After all, the elite never ignore both candidates, and in fact, ensure they have them both neatly packed in their back pockets. Among the guests at the Bilderberg meeting this year, included Republican Governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford, as well as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice,14 which would be a smart political pick for McCain, going up against the first black presidential candidate.
McCain has also received endorsements from former Secretaries of State, Henry Kissinger, General Alexander Haig, Lawrence Eagleburger and George P. Shultz.15 These are not men without influence, as Henry Kissinger and George Shultz were also present at this years meeting.16 Also interesting to note is that George P. Shultz “associated himself with the Bush presidency early on, introducing the Texas governor to Condoleezza Rice at the Hoover Institution in 1998.” Could Condi be in the process of being groomed for higher office, or is she simply at the meeting for foreign policy discussions?
Also important to note, is that McCain had a fundraiser in London held for him, which was hosted “by kind permission of Lord Rothschild OM GBE [Order of Merit and the Knight Grand Cross of the British Empire] and the Hon Nathaniel Rothschild.” As the Washington Post reported, “Tickets to the invitation-only event cost $1,000 to $2,300.”18 The Post later reported, “Aides refused to talk about the fundraiser, or to say how much money was raised, and McCain dashed through the rain away from reporters after emerging. One guest said there were about 100 people at the luncheon. If they all gave the maximum, the event would have raised about $230,000 for the campaign.”19
Do you know whats wrong with this content????

IT TOOK ALL THESE YEARS FOR THIS MESS TO BE CREATED!!! SO GIVE HIM TIME TO RESOLVE IT!!!
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!
WORKING TOGETHER OR COMING TOGEHTER FOR A COMMON CAUSE IS A START!!!!
SO LETS START HERE………..
SUPPORT HIM!!!!!!
TRY AND UNDERSTAND OR AT LEAST GIVE OBAMA THE CHANCE TO PUT HIS PLAN THAT GOD HAS GIVEN HIM TO…..
WE WAITED THIS LONG??????
HAVE PATIENTS……….
Well I guess I can put my 2 cents right here. I love u all nomatter what race, religion, ethnicity, or any of that stuff. What Im trying to say is this, if we don’t stop pointing and blaming and tearing down, then we will all lose. Just take a step back and look at what is happening just in your own hood and you can see it. There are so many of us that can and have made a differance in this country just by some kind and ENCOURAGING words. R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Our pattern of being critical of the critic’s continue. Our pattern of labeling anyone a hater who takes exception to the prevailing view of the black masses continues. What we have to learn is this.. that in order for us to gain a further insight into the many layers of one truth, we have to be willing to conduct a critical analysis of it. But our fear is that taking a critical look into it will somehow taint the legend. And we are very protective of our legends. Take Dr. Martin Luther King for example. Evidence was presented as to his philandering ways. But because no one wanted to taint his legend, we attacked the people who presented the evidence instead of looking at the evidence objectively. Protecting the legend. One would be living with blinders not to at least give serious thought to the points that Mr. McGruder made. They were very relevant. Is he pessimistic? Of course he is. But why should every African American be held to the standard of being a blind supporter of the American Regime now that the President is one of “us”? Those who wish to blindly support President Obama and not hold him to the standard of excellence he initiated for himself when he solicited our vote will be no better than those who blindly followed G.W. Bush into Iraq. I say this America (and especially Black America), do not fall for the shell game. This country is no doubt in dire straights, and while we’re busy divinating President Obama, the real movers and shakers are busy with thier mission. So be critical. Be pessimistic. Be positive. Be cautious. But all in all, be people of action
Ok and again what does it matter if he is African American or not….I don’t get it??? And asks for Kenyans and other Africans looking down upon African Americans, you can say that with a lot of people, Lighter Skinned hate on darker skin black people vice versa the list can go on and on….And that is what the problem is, instead of trying to bring some type of unity to our race we are constantly bickering about trivial things, and expanding our divide. Can we please have unity for a little bit, even if it’s a far fetched dream. And people talk about slavery like they’ve been a slave…I can say most people in our lifetime haven’t experienced slavery. Although the ramifications of slavery are still very evident, that is why many African American still have this crab in a bucket mentality. I’m glad Obama is not from here so we can have more of an idealist, who is not weighed down by the mistakes of the past and can move forward with change…
I noticed the american flag that was on top of the presidents limo had gold frindges around it.Those gold frindges represent corporate america (maritime law,the rules of the sea, pirates)and not the citizens under the U.S. constitution.Notice the citizens did’nt have gold frindges around the flags they were waving.this lets you know whats really up.
Mr. Barrow; Your interruptation of Mr. McGruders comments are misleading to say the least. Frankly I agree with him on numerous points….You are reading more than what has been inparted by McGruder….Further more, I can see your mind set is clouded as in your statement: “….lineage and finds out she’s half Cherokee (like many Black Americans)….” That is a delusion in and of itself. Very few Africans of the time had contact with Native Americans and many that profess to be of NA blood are simply searching for an identity that does not exist. I share the belief that although Obama is African American (as defined), he is not Black American in the sense of a shared history borne out of slavery in a strange land. McGruder is not saying Kenyans did not experience slavery, he is speaking directly about the plight of the slave born Blacks as opposed to Kenyans who for all intents and purposes do not consider themselves brother to the American Black. As a matter of fact, American Blacks are looked down upon by our so called African breathren….I could go on but I’ll stop here for now….
All true, I don’t disagree with Aaron and I don’t disagree with Jerry. What we need to do is support more black business, so that they can become big corporations and hire more blacks. Hence, perpetuating the dream that we all have. Once we have our our own corporations, we too can take part in the benefits of this country and create our own standards.
It was only a matter of time before this happened. The media response has indeed been predictable. This young brother has actually given voice to what a number of Black people in my fairly broad circle of friends have been saying in the “safety” of our bonds of friendship. It should be noted that before Mr. Obama’s campaign gained momentum many people were skeptical about him and his candidacy. I watched with utter sadness and dismay as many began to look upon the candidate as a somewhat “Messianic” figure who is going to somehow repair the damage done be years of corruption and poor governance by BOTH parties. I watched with similar feelings as we dubbed a serial philanderer and liar the “first Black President.” What I’ve concluded is that the American People, in general, and Black people in particular have a profound misunderstanding of the American political system and who REALLY runs this country. Interestingly enough NOT all of the candidates for the presidency were given access to the media or a platform on which to debate the issues. We would have known that a Black WOMAN was among the candidates.
We also need to be aware of “the politics of distraction.” The country is indeed in decline. I submit to you that any of the three probable candidates for the presidency would have had some “historical significance.” We would have had either “The First Woman President,”The First Woman Vice-President,” or, what we got, “The First Black President.” In any case our attention would have been focused on a “first” and away from the true issues. To paraphrase, I believe, former President Teddy Roosevelt, nothing happens in politics that was not planned that way. I share Mr. McGruder’s cautious pessimism.
Mr. McGruder hit the nail on the head and stepped on quite a few toes I suppose by telling the truth:
I hope I am wrong.”
I end by saying enjoy the “historical moment.” However, keep your eyes on the national and global economies, Europe (being totally ignored), and as always the Middle East. These are the three areas which continue to hold the most danger for our nation.
Stay, close to God, love and be faithful to your spouses and mates, take care of and raise your children, respect your aged parents and relatives, be wise with your money, and kind to one another. Mr. Obama cannot do that for you!
Just my two cents.
You are adding your opinion onto his. What he is stating is fact. The Prez Obama dad came here on his own free will. Not like our ancesters in chain’s. Prez Obama can actually trace his since of being to a direct place in Africa. Can you? Trust and believe we are all happy for this moment but that is were it stops for alot of us. 1 Black President don’t change 450 years of being oppressed. We arestill second rate citizens. We don’t own anything in coporate america so that mean that we still don’t have a voice. Take the wool off your eyes man. The only thing that changed was the man not the plan!!!
