Dear Enlightened Brother a/k/a The Black Man -

After witnessing the hubris of the Cambridge Mass Police department press conference, I’m conflicted. Not about the issue regarding the arrest and how ridiculous the arrest was in the first place, but on how to respond to it, as Dr. Dyson said- “A collision between ignorance and amnesia.”

Unfortunately, anger is the first to demand my attention, yet giving into that emotion is counter productive. In the Obama Era that we live in-what would you do TBM – as President of the United States?

Would you ignore it in public but stick it to them behind the scenes, or really just let it go?  I’m curious, because President Obama stands at the threshold of either bringing focus to the long overlooked and ignored issues in this country or taking the road most traveled – ambivalence.

The Symbol

TBM:

Hi Symbol,

There is a time and place to handle situations.  I feel that by President Obama giving his opinion on the matter on a nationwide primetime speech, when there are a bunch of issues that could have been addressed, it was his way of letting the public know that even though he is Black and the President of the United States there are still instances that occur in our society that are racially inflicted. I believe he wanted to make sure the masses knew what happened so it would not get swept under the rug by the media.

I believe he handled it in a good manner. I am sure it will be dealt with more behind the scenes.

It is important to address this issue.  If I were the president, I would have addressed it as well especially since it was relevant in current events. For an issue like this to really get addressed you want people to pay attention and be aware of this. Timing is key.  This can be handled both overtly and covertly.  I would also point out that one person can not fix this problem. It also has to be supported by the communities in the U.S. When these issues occur, we can’t just let them slide. We must do something about it.  Report it and let it be known. Bring awareness to the masses.  These types of situations anger most people but we don’t want to do anything negative to bring ourselves or anyone else around us down. We can choose to use the energy of anger to motivate us into creating a better situation.

“Anger is only one letter short of danger.”

That’s my 99 Cents worth.

Yes he did, the only reason he’s ridiculed is because he’s black, president or not they (white people) can never see past color. If it was that IDIOT Bush it would have been ok.

Obama is great at identifying with the majority underdog,he identifies with his own reality, I would;ve used the question to put police on notice that I dont like it, the public doesn’t and all violations wil be receiving increased penalties.

I don’t like police, some r like evil serial killers with a new car and a new gun and being patted on the back for taking out a black guy or gal for looking cross at them.

It is defanately not a laughing matter and they r just lucky that we don’t decide to take the actual popo out who did one of us. If we did that a couple 8 times all police brutality would stop, u know, don’t protest, no news conference, just a dead popo who stepped over the Thick Black Line and got squashed, not his friend, him.

Coz if that beer don’t go down smoothly thats where its going bra.

No he didn’t, he handled how a politician would. Those that uses logic rather than reactionary emotions knows after hearing the 911 call, reading the transcript of the call, and reading the transcript of the case shows no racial profiling or bias on either sides. If Obama wanted a dialogue across racial lines and the racial issues that ills our society. He should’ve made it a point to not call the police officer stupid in national network, which pretty much added more flame to the fire. In addition, it would’ve been better if he actually suggested that he would go around the country in town hall meetings like he did when he was campaigning and wants public support for the healthcare plan, and use it as a way of having dialogues regarding the racial issue that’s been here for over 500 years. However, he is a politician like any other politician just like any other former presidents. He is not going to take the lead to the path of harmony and unity. We have to remember we are not a nation; we are just bunch of people living side by side each other in an area that has borders. For a place to be a nation, its people have to be UNITED, and that’s far from happening in this country (corporation). For those that always give Obama this A+ grade, ask yourself if he wants to really stand for inequality and racial profiling why he did not stand up and say something about the murder of OSCAR GRANT???? How about the brother that was hunt down by the police in Houston??? How about the brother that was dragged 70feet by two white men???? And I can go on and on and on, but for what. Your president has been in office for over 200 days, and he hasn’t signed any bill or legislation regarding his campaign promises. If he wants to have equality stamped all over this land, why don’t he make civil right obsolete and make it a true HUMAN RIGHTS??? How about the abolishment of Brown vs. the board of education case by the supreme courts, which taken us back to the legalization of segregation??? Not like I don’t support separate but equal because I do. Should I continue. .

He didn’t handle it correctly…if he had, he wouldn’t have had to back track on his words, and then invite Officer Crowley over for some Pabst Blue Ribbons…Obama is a trained lawyer and should have known better to preface his comment with “I don’t know all the facts”…if you don’t know all the facts, how could you possibly have an opinion on how the Police dept acted? Also, this is NOT a case of Racial profiling, because its clear from the 911 call that the officers didn’t even know he was black, plus racial profiling is about approaching people who look “suspicious” because of their race, NOT responding to a 911 call! JazzPast is dead on this President DIDN’T say a word about Oscar Grant even though, that led to a few days of rioting! WAKE UP BLACK PEOPLE! stop being so easily led…Stop with the emotional reactions and utilize some logic when dealing with this President, Black or not!!!
