gay-symbol-background-thumb9013605Dear TBM,

I’m gay and black. It’s hard for me as a black man to appreciate myself from years past and had wished that I were someone else. I grew up in a small town and most of my friends were Caucasian. I’ve often seen myself as one of them. I know it sounds very sad but it’s my reality. I would stretch myself to learn more about my culture and race while attending college. But often found that I was ridiculed because I just did not fit into the stereotype of what an African-American should be. For example, I never used improper in English such Ebonics. So when I would speak, it was with proper verbs and nouns etc. I would receive many reactions from my own people asking me “why do you talk so proper or why you talk like you are white?” My reaction would be one of hurt and withdrawal. Because of that, when it comes to dating or loving someone that I want to be with, it became a challenge for me. I’ve always dated men out side of my own race and often found myself not really happy. I’m not sure what type of kind of advice you have and also not sure what your beliefs are regarding homosexuality but I would hope that you could look past it if you are not in agreement and give some solid advice.
Thank you

MMB

The Blackman:

Hi MMB,

This issue actually has nothing to do with your sexual orientation; it has to do with race. You have actually gone through what quite a few people of color go through when being raised in a predominantly white area or being educated in school that consists of mostly white people and very few blacks for a greater portion of your childhood.

In many cases when they get to college they have been around the most black people that they have ever encountered in their life. Then you are trying to figure out what it is to be black. Some people go to the extreme and become extremely militant and others may try to transform to become “ghetto” or “hood.” There is also a group of people that are trying to figure an alternative route then the previous two where they can fit in. That sounds like the category where you fit in.

Usually during your college years and through their twenties people are still defining who they are. It seems to me that since you don’t speak Ebonics and have been criticized for it, it has hurt your self-esteem and you question your “blackness.” You are not comfortable in your own skin.
I’d like for you to answer this question. “What does it take for some one to be black?” The last time I looked it was determined by the color of your skin. It has nothing to do with how you speak, dress, or the neighborhood you live in. There are plenty of black people that do not speak in Ebonics. A lot of blacks are actually raised in households where the parents don’t allow their kids to speak like that or even use the “N” word.

You have be comfortable with who you are as an individual in which it seems like you are not in that place yet. Because you are not happy within, you are putting yourself in situations that are not creating happiness for you. If you want to be with black men then you have to be in an environment that will allow you to interact with other black gay men. Basically, you are holding yourself back.

If you focus on moving past these obstacles you will find yourself in a better place in life. You cannot change where you lived or how you were raised. If you learn to truly accept the person that you are, you will be a happier individual.

Good Luck.

TBM

    Great response..
I was wondering where in the handbook does it say that blacks speak only in ebonics and live in the hood.

Wow.. (what a sad world we live in where we believe in our own sterotypes)

Where do you fit in? You fit in your own skin~ You shouldn’t change who you are for others to like, love or apprciate you. If you do that then the are in love w/ an image and not the person. Be you, if those around you can’t hanle it than move on. The world is full of over 6 BILLION people!!! Your kindred spirit is out there. Love yourself, because if you don’t (and people can tell when yu don’t) than why should they love you?

Proper speech is always a funny issue. My Junior year in high school this nigga was seriously mad that my father and mother used to live together and that they were in my life. He used to call me Theo Huxtable….we didnt have huxtable money they werent doctors or lawyers they were just there. Anytime i answered a question or said what up to my peoples, out of nowhere “F**k you Theo!” this nigga would be hatin. Finally it was during March Madness me and this nigga got into it. We both went to the office where this nigga broke down. The ‘thug’ the ‘gangsta’ the tough nigga, All because I had 2 parents. I never said anything about them or talked about them, this nigga was just a capital hater and there he was in tears…..I never knew what the f**k that was about and to this day I still wondered why he was so upset

If I knew you I would tell you get in where you fit in. There are pleant of black people in the suburbs. As far as you being gay I mean WE are evrywhere, whether they wanna call it just being freaky or whatever. Dont conform to your surroundings, instead let them accept you for who you are. DOnt be ignorant like that Goddesslover who made that very IGNORANT comment. You will not burn in hell! I do agree that you should have a relationship with Jesus, nothing like him.

It’s so sad to see black men like you come out of the closet admitting your gay. One reason why your gay is because of white america. White slave masters raped our men at will during slavery and also put their homo dna in our women when raping them. The end product is men like you. You are a discrace to the black race but then again as mentioned, it may not be your entire fault. How many Africans do you know that are gay, how many men in Iran do you know that are gay? etc. They would be stoned to death. It dosn’t take a fool to see what’s going on in this sick country. White America is a discraceful and filty place to live and you have become apart of it, as so many of our brothers and sisters. It’s most certantly doomed!!! Any nation that accepts homosexuality and same sex marriage is a sick nation. Many gay brothers who recive this type of criticism respond like any white gay American would by saying, “my constitutional rights says I have the right to be gay. Thats no excuse, the constitution was made up by a group of sick white men and should be burned. It’s also sad that our black sisters are sleeping and having babies by little teenie weeine white men. Many of their male children “half black” become handicapped sexually (little weinies) or become homos or spoiled punk baseball players. Their half black half white daughters become pure white girls, some gay, and giving news reports on cnn or fox news, talking and acting like those that that enslaved their great-grandparents. Still straighting their hair to look like those that enslaved their greatgrandparents and doing everything to be white. Many of them hate black men and marry white. This is what the black race has inherited after slavery and many like yourself has accepted it. It’s so sad to see a black homosexual, or an undercover one, what a waste. I don’t know if your mother is white or black, but if she is white she has perhaps been giving you homo training since you could crawl. It is known that white women raises their sons very softly and in the end they come out the way you did. Black women are guilty of this to. Remember one thing my sick brother, the rectum is an exit not an entrance. You my brother is sick indeed. Please get help and if you refuse your life may soon ve over from aids. One more thing, If I ever saw you in life I would slap your face.

I like this argument because it really shows what some black people feel about the subject and the truth is alot of black people are ignorant when it comes to “acting white”. I dont see Mexicans say other Mexicans are “acting white” when they can speak fluently and eloquently, I dont see Chinese Americans saying that either. Its like in the black culture being poor, uneducated and a “victim” is the only thing that gets you a free pass for being black. I think black people insult their own intelligence when they say someone whose smart and speaks eloquently is “acting white”, its basically like they are saying “ay dog unless you walk around with your underwear showing, use a curse word every other word, and talk like a 10th grade dropout u aint black dog”. As a black person myself I pride myself on “acting” like I am educated. Im not ‘acting white’ when I am speaking fluently and prnounce the ends of my sentences. To be honest black people rather look up to some of the jackasses on B.E.T than look up to the true successful people. Have you ever heard most rappers talk when they are doing interviews? It sounds like you’re in a crowd of complete idiots, they basically say “ya heard me” and “ya know what im talkin bout” after every sentence. President Obama hit the nail on the head when said in frront of the NAACP that “its time for our black youth to start wanting more out of their life than being a rapper or an athlete”. It seems even with Obama as President most of our black youth ages 14-23 still idolize the life of fast money and cheap women but are making no plans for their future and thats the reason why whites and Chinese grow up to be more successful than alot of blacks in their age range. Its because while they were in high school they were paying attention in school and studying while that same black at their high school is on the internet searching Lil Wayne lyrics. Be smarter black America.

i know what you mean, i go through this s**t damn near every day “what does it mean to be black?” excuse me for a dumbass for thinking that it was because of the color of my skin… i quess the critera has changed lol. my hair ain’t nappy,i speak well because i am educated,i may be a little loud, i’ve never had to live in the hood but i wasn’t brought up with a silver spoon in my mouth either my mother worked hard by herself with 5 kids to make sure we did’t want for anything and when she saw that schools we were going too were going down the drain she moved us to ensure we had the best or the best she could. i used to get offended when other ppl of color look at me funny when i use a word they are not familiar with…My questsion is why should i feel at fault when i say something and they don’t know what i mean ? should i be like the ignorant ppl and expect my own to be ignorant ? thats the way i feel when somebody tells me can i speck regular english in a “relaxed” setting, but this who i am all day don’t change for nobody. when im pissed off then you will see a more crazy side of me, but is still erica hate it or love it baby ;-)

I’m reading the comments and i’m very surprised that so many have the mentality of a pig…It’s tremendously amazing to witness this. We as blacks complain about how racism continues to dominate in our environment on a daily basis yet we find it okay to condemn another black man because of whom he chooses to be intimate with. How dare you??? What makes u any better than all the racist out there in the world today? Absolutely nothing! Probably even worse. You tell the man he will burn in hell and all sorts yet it’s the same God that you speak of that asks us not to judge anybody… I’m so disgusted at all this comments i feel like im watching an episode of roots all over again. No one says you have to agree or support a lifestyle but respect it.. And lastly, just because you’re not a gay black man doesn’t make you a better man and definitely will not make black women like you anymore than we do a gay black man. Work on yourselves first, fix yourselves first only then will you be educated enough to understand that leaving comments like this only diminishes any common sense you have!!!

It’s amazing how much ignorance is being displayed on this posting. I’m not talking about the homophobia. Personally, I couldn’t care less about who anyone sleeps with, as long as they are consenting adults. That’s between them and God. I’m talking about all of the brainwashed Brothers using the words of the oppressor to define themselves. The coonery is in full bloom here. “Ebonics?” Give me a break. It’s called illiteracy. You want to express culture? Learn to speak Swahili, Hausa, Arabic, Igbo, Yoruba, Bantu, or any of the other 2,000 languages of our ancestors that are still spoken today. But don’t act as if stupidity is a valid expression of ethnicity. Every time you claim “ebonics” and call yourself or others a “N….” you make the KKK, the Aryan Nation, and the Skinheads smile from ear to ear and Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Harriet Tubman roll in their graves. Get up and wake up.

MMB, this is some advice from someone who has never fit in a day in her life…DON’T TRY TO FIT IN…shine all by yourself. The truly worthy people will come to you–make them earn your friendship, and prove that they are for real. ‘Cause no matter what, people will always find a reason to have some stupid criticism of you.

@shindogg, you talk all that s**t and you are too chicken s**t to fill in your profile, or even put up your own pic…and I bet you didn’t know that Tupac (R.I.P.) was BISEXUAL.

I understand your dilemma. I am a lesbian, multi racial, raised by an Harvard educated mother. So while my friends watched stuff like Good Times and The Jefferson’s freely I had to sneak and watch these shows. I was not raised in a Baptist church (we are catholic for the most part) so when my friends make reference to church things that others know because they have had similar experiences I have NO idea what they are referring to, I am a very eclectic individual who fought hard to recognize with my African American side…I grew up in various environments from “the hood” to “the burbs” I became strongly immersed in hip hop culture in my teen years but I was also involved in rock culture, skate boarding. I am a huge lover of art, music, literature everything from Andy Warhol to William H. Johnson from Shakespeare to Alice Walker from Blink 182/ White Snake to Mos Def/Dwele. I have always had African American friends and family tell me I am weird; I speak proper, or ask me if something I said was even a real word. Then to add to that I am a lesbian… in (as I previously stated) a mostly catholic (but not very religious) family, so I also find it hard sometimes to relate. However, I know this to be true above all the only thing required to be black is your heritage… I always hated comments like “you don’t act black” or “you talk white” at the end of the day I’m me and you are you so don’t let anyone ever take that from you or try to convince you otherwise. Regardless of your interests, style of dress, or personality you are black and you fit in where those that love and care for you are , you fit in your life and that’s all that matters just be happy with you (the adult) that you have become nobody else matters, Peace.

Let’s put the facts where the facts are facts. ! Homosexuals are not born homosexuals. A fact. 2. How the human race was populated? Thru a man and a woman. Not thru 2 men or 2 women. This is a fact. 3 Can 2 men or 2 women physically repopulate this planet? The answer is no. This is a fact. So there you have it. Homosexuality is not from birth but is a life style of choice of the individual.

Ugh I have read some of the most ignorant and pathetic comments on here. Since as far back as I can remember I have always liked girls! When I was young I knew I liked girls in a different way than I was “supposed” to. So me being an innocent child, I “choose” to be gay? WTF?! No it was not a choice it was what I always felt! And NO I was not raped or molested, I grew up in a 2parent home that was very stable. I think everybody needs to wake up and stop being so judgemental. If you are not gay/bisexual than you know NOTHING about it, period.

As for the MMB I can relate. I grew up in a predominatley “white” neighborhood. I speak proper and growing up I had a lot of white friends. The black girls used to call me “oreo” and make fun of the way I talk, not to mention that I am pretty, they were very cruel but I always just did me. I have a rainbow spectrum of friends, I love them all ad I love myself and am proud to be an educated, proper, queer black woman and you should be proud of yourself too!
