I understand his frustration, but LeBron has proven to be a glorified Scottie Pippen. The Bulls didn’t win a championship when Pippen was the man, and the Cavs were’nt going to win any championships with James as the man. He can now go to Miami and ride D Wade’s coattail and maybe win a few championships.

One more thing, I don’t think the Cavs will win a championship in the near future with their current roster. Maybe Mr. Gilbert knows something that we don’t.

You mentioned Magic, Kobe, and Jordan never left their teams. Magic was drafted to a playoff team already. 2 hall of fame players on that team, Kareem and Magic. Kobe wanted to leave but the Lakers catered to his needs and won 2 rings in the process. Jordan never left because they were putting pieces together by trading draft choices in ’87 and drafting Scottie Pippen. And 6 rings later, the rest is history. There are NO other All-Stars on that Cavs roster, other than LeBron.

Why don’t more people call out owners when they ship away aging vet’s to bring in players that are either up and coming, or in their primes?

I do remember the 76′s trying to ship Dr. J to Utah for a younger Adrian Dantley. The fans in Philly were pretty upset about that one, but I guess that doesn’t count because in that aspect it’s business.

The Bulls after they thought they got everything they could get out of Jordan, Pippen, and Phil Jackson they basically sent them packing.

There are many cases where teams either let aging players go, or trade/cut them to build for their futures and people seem to then remember it is a business, when a player does it, all of a sudden, the sky is falling.

First off, I was not surprised at all that LeBron was going to leave. Coach Mike Brown didnt know how to use the personnel that he got, that’s why he is gone. The role players got exposed during the playoffs i.e. KG sh!t’n on Jamison. The management fired Danny Ferry who was a vital part in Cavs history as a player and GM. Before that, they were building up with the winning records, playoff success, and all that money they were bringing in. So, in response, management blew the team up thinking that they were going to rebuild as long as LeBron was going to be there with them… the phuck were they thinking? Brown and Ferry fired, 2 failed attempts to hire college coaches as the head coach, a less than decent draft… it was getting sloppy. Byron Scott was too little too late that should have been their main priority to get him to begin with even if he was still broadcasting.

I am not a big Lebron fan or a Cavs fan. However I can understand how the owner could be upset. Not for leaving but for waiting until the deadline to tell the team. If he said after the season that he wanted to play somewhere else I am sure the Cavs would have made cap changes and courted free agents. However when Lebron waited until 9pm and told the entire world instead of being a courteous gentleman and informing the owner and his team in person. It was like breaking up with your wife through a text message while being on Maury.
There is no slave master themes or snything like that, it is just an owner who feels disrespected because he fired his coach, gathere players, spent lots of money (even going into luxury tax) to cater to Lebron and have him turn around and not return his calls all off season and make him watch a TV program on ESPN.
Rather you agree if he should have left or not you have to at least consider that he handled how he left in a way that could upset his home town.

In the course of your ownership of the Cavaliers, you have made BUSINESS decisions (delegated, of course but you had final approval on all decisions) cutting players (some who had given many years of loyal service) that you felt no longer benefitted the team (your right as owner). My second point is what did Cleveland do to keep him there? No Cleveland took the cheap route. Remember they had SEVEN years to get him some QUALITY help. A broke down Shaq does not cut it. WAKE UP! Magic, Bird nor Michael Jordan had to wait that long to get quality players around him.

Here’s the situation:

LeBron chose where he wanted to be to get him to a (possible)championship.
However, his lack of competitive spirit is down simply because of the fact that he went to someone else’s team (D’Wade).
He could have done what Kobe did and stayed in Cleveland and forced the Cavs to build a team around him.

First, the NBA commissioner needs to fine Dan Gilbert for making these comments. Lebron was a FREE AGENT and like all free agents he had the right to interview for any job in the league that was available to him. He’s a GROWN man not property of the Cavs or anyone else so this guy’s comments are not only insulting but he’s adding fuel to an unnecessarily hostile climate for Lebron who not only played there for 7 years but he was born and raised in Akron, not far from Cleveland.

Second, the last time that I checked the Cavs BEFORE Lebron were a nameless and faceless bunch who only got to pick LeBron because the were LAST in the league and therefore got lucky enough to draft a top seed. However, during the 7 years of James’ reign where was Dan Gilbert with all of the aggressive grandstanding? Where was the motivation to build a solid team to support Lebron in his quest for championships? Where was all of this tough talk then? What they did do was bring in recycled players, put a slower team on the floor during the finals, rely solely on Lebron to carry the team, and get out coached in every playoff game. I want to see Dan Gilbert bring a ring to Cleveland. I want to see it.

Last, while Lebron in his eyes may be a coward, I can guarantee you that if Lebron James had gotten injured and could no longer perform at his current level while wearing a Cavs jersey, Dan Gilbert would have been in front of the line advocating that they trade him. Basketball is a business…always has been and always will be.

Based upon this man’s attitude, comments, and bitter disposition, it’s clear that Lebron made the right decision. The Cavs knew that he was going to be a free agent this year yet they did nothing, until the last minute, to try to upgrade the team and put the missing pieces in place. It’s been SEVEN years yet they just figured out that the guy is serious…he really wants to win championships? Did they think that he’d stay under such poor management?

I hope that LeBron is successful. He is one of the youngest players who has his level of seniority yet not a soul can say that he’s ever done anything but handle himself like a full grown man. There’s been no arrests, tantrums, grandstanding, diva like behavior, drugs, etc.. on his part. He’s played a fair game, worked extremely hard, BROUGHT IN EXCESS OF $500 million annually to the Cleveland economy, set up charities, helped tons of kids, etc… yet this level of disrespect is what he gets? It’s actually pretty telling that, after seven years, he opted to leave the Cavs with $30 million on the table to go to Miami. If Dan Gilbert had cultivated a full sense of respect for the players, I believe that LeBron may have stayed. As is, however, who wants to work for a pathetic whiner like Gilbert?

The truth of the matter is that even before Lebron ever put on a Cavs jersey, the team was always lacking in depth, talent, vision, and overall leadership. Count the number of coaches, general managers, etc… and it’s pretty telling. The other issue that Gilbert needs to admit is that they were LUCKY that Lebron played for them in the first place. In fact, had he not been from Akron and fresh out of high school, he probably wouldn’t have wanted to be in Cleveland. Gilbert should count his blessings that he had 7 years of good money flowing in and try to build upon that success rather than blame a guy who had free agency status for CHOOSING to move on. Again, if the shoe had been on the other foot and Lebron’s game dropped off for any reason, Gilbert would have put him on the first thing smoking out of there. At the end of the day, Gilbert is more concerned about ticket sales than what’s best for Lebron.

This man is grossly unprofessional and completely out of line. A letter to the city of Cleveland?? The guy’s family still lives in that area for goodness sakes!

At the end of the day all sports players want a RING!!! If he went to a team that offered him more money, that would have let you know he was playing the game for a pay check, not the love of the game.

Here’s the reality: If Lebron had been playing for another team and then became a free agent, Dan Gilbert and the CAVS would have gone after him. There are plenty of example of great players who were team loyal yet who never got that ring (e.g. Dominique Wilkins stayed with the Hawks). Other great players got a clue and went for a better team and got a ring (e.g. Clyde Drexler). It’s a team sport and free agency is designed so that players can, at some point, have some degree of creative control at the midpoint of their performance over their own careers. As well, it’s a very clever way to address aging players and team cap issue. In other words, some players are “advised” to go on the market because “things are no longer working out” (you know…that acl injury has affected your vertical so….). It’s a business.

Bottom line, if he was going to Re Sign with Cleveland, he would have probably signed an extension/contract months ago. If Gilbert didn’t know Lebron was going elsewhere, then he has to be the most clueless owner in sports.

James himself set a deadline for you to do that when he chose three years ago to sign a short-term deal instead of a max contract.
