Whereas Weeds’ protagonist, Nancy Botwin may have left that trick Mary Jane alone several seasons ago, you’ll all be happy to know that Dr. Dre is still sticking to what he knows best.

Well, in the case of the official (?) lead single from the good doctor’s mythical Detox album, it’s “Kush.”

“Kush,” whose existence has been bubbling on the under-underground the last few days, features Akon and the weed connoisseur himself; Snoop Dogg.

After being extremely disappointed in Dre’s last attempt at a lead Detox single, the horrid “Under Pressure” with Jay-Z, our expectations for “Kush” were a little on the low end.

But after listening to the song, we were pleasantly surprised.

“Under Pressure” failed because it didn’t sound like a Dr. Dre record should in 2010.  It sounded like Dr. Dre making a track for Lady Gaga.  “Kush” sounds like what the man who made The Chronic 18 years ago should be making now.

Oh, we’re sorry.  Pardon our manners…

Originally intended for Akon’s album, Freedom, a version of the song leaked in 2008 and even managed to chart as a single in Africa without even officially being released.

“Hold My Hand” opens up the album, and hopefully will wash the taste of “Breaking News” out of the mouths of many.

50 Cent, Akon and Lenny Kravitz are all confirmed to have contributed to the album.  Akon is featured on the song “Hold My Hand,” which was originally intended to be on Akon’s 2008 album Freedom and leaked that same year.  Lenny Kravitz is featured on the song “(I Can’t Make It) Another Day,” a song which leaked earlier this year and is an early version of “Storm,” a song Kravitz released on his 2004 album Baptism (Ed. Note: A song which also had a bananas Just Blaze remix with a Jay-Z verse).  And finally, 50 is featured on a song called “Monster,” a snippet of which leaked online this week but disappeared before we could even get a chance to listen.

According to Akon, the Konfidence Foundation was established to create a better future for the children of Africa.

“It all strung from concept of creating a better future for the kids in Africa,” Akon told AllHipHop.com. “I started realizing as I was growing up and as I was coming up in this business, I allowed myself to be educated, period.  And I think that was the moment where I became more of an entrepreneur; I understood what the essence of business was.”

Akon, who was born in Senegal, recently opened an elementary school there using the proceeds he earned from touring.

“You start to realize education really is the key,” Akon told AllHipHop.com. “You just got to allow yourself to absorb the information and properly use it. With that thought in mind, when we created the Konfidence Foundation, it was more so to find a platform to educate all these children so that they can have a better future with what’s left to develop in Africa. We built my first elementary school in Senegal, which is an incredible accomplishment because I did it with my own money, my tour money and did it myself.”

According to Akon, his next project will be to create and establish a new University in Senegal for students, in addition to future plans to build hospitals in the country.

Tour organizer Dwayne Cross says that Akon has been banned from performing at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena after an incident at a different arena in 2009 in which Akon jumped into the crowd to break up a fight.

All other performers on the bill, which include Ciara, Soulja Boy, Flo Rida, Jay Sean and Stan Walker, have been cleared to perform in Melbourne.

Akon will perform on the tour’s other stops which include Brisbane, Sydney and Perth.

Four years ago Jay-Z issued a lyrical taunt to his fellow rappers: “What you call money, I pay more in taxes.” Turns out his line was more than just a boast.

Jay-Z pulled in $63 million over the past 12 months, earning him his second straight hip-hop cash crown. His income level places him in the 35% tax bracket, which means he’ll pay Uncle Sam about $22 million this year–a sum greater than the total earnings of any other rap star besides second-ranked Diddy.

The top 20 earners on this year’s Cash Kings list racked up about $300 million in earnings, an average of $15 million per artist. Remarkably, the total is roughly the same as last year, despite a troubled economy and a music industry thrown into flux by new technology.

When news broke that Akon would be covering Shuggie Otis’ classic tune “Strawberry Letter 23″ (later popularized by The Brothers Johnson), for an upcoming Quincy Jones tribute album, I called for Quincy and Akon’s head on a stick.

After listening to the finished product, I still want their heads on a stick.

The only thing that’s wrong with this modernized version of the song is the person singing it.  Akon’s soulless, autotuned voice has absolutely no business singing a song like this.

It’s been turned into a slick robotic pop song that the kids may like for a few months, but they’ll never really understand the brilliance of the song itself because of the way it’s presented.

I weep for the future.

After ruining “We Are The World” for millions of people last month, legendary producer Quincy Jones is set to ruin even more of his classic productions with his upcoming Soul Bossa Nostra tribute album.

Jones has called on a who’s who of today’s stars to cover some of his classic works, and the list of artists and the songs they are attached to make me want to vomit.

Here’s a few of the biggest offenders:

Akon “Strawberry Letter 23″ (made famous by The Brothers Johnson)
Usher, Robin Thicke, LL Cool J, Trey Songz, Tyrese, Tevin Campbell “Secret Garden” (originally performed by El DeBarge, James Ingram, Al B. Sure!, and Barry White)

A concert featuring Akon and T-Pain turned into pandemonium Sunday (October 25) that left 18 people injured in Melbourne, Australia.

The pair were headlining a concert at the HiSense Arena when rival gangs began brawling in the audience.

Nine people and two security guards were taken to the hospital in six ambulances, where they received treatment for lacerations, bruises and other minor injuries.

Akon leapt from the stage during his performance in an attempt to quell the violence, which continued throughout the remainder of the concert, which cost fans up to $125 dollars-per ticket.

“I don’t know if y’all know hard it took me to get here,” Akon said from the shoulders of a burly security guard. “It took me almost two years for Australia to let me back in the country and I’m not going to let them f**k up our concert tonight.”

One man was arrested for assaulting and knocking a security guard unconsciousness, while another six people reported injuries, but refused treatment.

According to reports, it took Akon almost two years to receive his work permit in Australia, due to his prior criminal record.

We have no idea what the hell is going on here. This is a photo of Akon and Wyclef at the MAMA Awards and we’re guessing they felt compelled to take of their pants and show each other their manhood? Sounds suspect…

Rolling Stone magazine is reporting that LaToya Jackson has gained possession of a computer hard drive containing both new and unreleased songs from her brother Michael that he had recorded with such singer/producers as Ne-Yo, Akon, and will.i.am.

The drives were housed in Michael’s rented Holmby Hills, Calif., mansion when he died suddenly in June. Hours afterward, the family descended on the house to claim all its contents, and LaToya grabbed the drives, Rolling Stone said, quoting the late singer’s manager, Frank DiLeo.

“They backed up trucks, removing everything,” DiLeo was quoted as telling the magazine in its issue that hits newsstands today. “They thought Michael owned it all, so they took even the rented furniture. That’s who’s going to run his estate?”

Jackson’s will gave 40 percent of his estate to his 79-year-old mother, Katherine, who wants more control and has raised doubts about the pair of high-powered executors currently overseeing his business affairs.

In a follow-up interview with Reuters, DiLeo said he was “pretty sure” the hard drives were at the family’s Hayvenhurst compound in Encino, Calif.

“The estate lawyers will send out letters” to recover the drives so that the contents can be logged, DiLeo added. A spokeswoman for will.i.am said the singer did not have duplicates of his work with Jackson. Representatives for Akon and Ne-Yo either could not be reached or had no information.

DiLeo told Rolling Stone that there were at least 100 songs — including many recorded at Jackson’s 1980s peak — that were never released, including a few “sensational” tracks that were left off “Bad,” the 1987 follow-up to his blockbuster “Thriller.”

Popular Hip-Hop group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, producer Swizz Beatz and R&B singer Akon have been hit with a lawsuit by a Texas-based music publisher.

Songster, which is located in Fort Worth, Texas, filed the lawsuit in the Central District of California yesterday (July 14).

Common Sued For 17-Year-Old Song

The company claims the Bone Thug’s lead single from their 2007 album Strength and Loyalty illegally lifted portions of the 1978 track “When The Day Will Come (aka KRSNA)” by group Rasa.

The lawsuit lists a variety of Hip-Hop artists who have sampled chanting from the song, which has been incorporated into tracks by KRS-One (“Beef”), Black Rob (“Can I Live”), Common (“Take It Easy”) and others with permission [Editor's note, Common was recently sued for using this same sample in "Take It Easy"]

Akon made a baby with a woman who now wants him to make child support payments — but she claims the only thing he does better than sing is hide from process servers.

We’re told Sara Coleman’s lawyer, Patrick Baghdaserians, has been desperately trying to serve Akon — even at Michael Jackson’s memorial — but so far no luck.

Patrick said Akon has already taken a paternity test — and it was a match! The kid is 6 months old.

XM/Sirius Radio has called upon DJ Skee to host another radio show. Currently the host of “Live From L.A.,” which currently airs every Saturday night on the XM/Sirius Radio, Skee will now also host a show entitled “Skeetox.” The new show will take “Live From L.A.’s” current time slot and debut this Saturday, June 6th, at 7pm PST. “Live From L.A.” will now move to Tuesday’s and will air at 7pm PST as well. Both shows are two hours long.

On Thursday, Akon visited Poughkeepsie, New York to speak to high school students about gun violence. Just a week and a half prior to his appearance, his protégé, Dolla, fell victim to gun violence. The 21-year old up and coming rapper was shot and killed in a Los Angeles mall on May 18.

“He was a good kid,” Akon said, calling the tragic incident “a very senseless crime.”

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, Akon appeared in front of roughly 50 Poughkeepsie High School students as part of Mayor John Tkazyik’s effort to reduce the use of guns among the youth. His appearance also went toward community service hours he was ordered to carry out due to an ’07 incident in which he threw a fan offstage at a KFEST concert.

In 1998, Akon was convicted for felony handgun possession. “At the time I thought I was doing it for protection,” he said. “Imagine if I had used it. I probably wouldn’t be here talking to you. There’s no turning back from that. That one little moment affects everybody.”

Students, who took pictures with Akon after the event, reacted positively to the singer’s message. “I thought he was inspirational,” junior Kadeem Davis said. “He seemed sincere and remorseful about his past.”

Poughkeepsie has experienced its fair share of gun violence with 23 shootings last year and 15 already this year. In the next few days, Akon will speak out against gun violence on local radio stations.

“It just feels great that you can make a mistake and be forgiven for it,” Akon said. “I just encourage [the youth] to do the right thing at the end of the day.”

The man killed during a high-profile shooting at the Beverley Center in Beverley Hills, California today was Atlanta rapper Dolla, sources have confirmed with AllHipHop.com.

Dolla, born Roderick Anthony Burton II, hailed from East Atlanta and Los Angeles. He was signed to Akon’s Konvict Muzik imprint.

The rapper was shot and killed shortly after 3:00 PM near the La Cienga Boulevard entrance, after a fight between a group of individuals broke out.

Witnesses report that a woman was seen firing a handgun. Another source said a male suspect was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport as he attempted to board a flight.

Dolla was originally a member of Hip-Hop group Da Razkals Cru, before he landed a gig for Sean “Diddy” Combs as a model for Sean John.

Dolla had gained a buzz via his track “Who The Heck Is That?” which featured T-Pain and Tay Dizm.

The rapper was reportedly working on his debut solo album titled a Dolla & A Dream.
