The event is being sponsored by United Airlines and hosted by CNN journalist, Soledad O’Brien with a guest list that includes the legendary Dionne Warwick, Paul Shaffer, Boys II Men, BeBe Winans and Motown’s own, Martha Reeves.

“This is a tribute to the great iconic music of Motown felt and known the world over, crossed cultural lines and spans generations,” Mr. Chew told TheUrbandaily.com. “It’s very befitting that we bring this music that is part of the American fabric to an iconic venue like Carnegie Hall.”

Chew explained that after holding a tribute to Motown on “American Idol” the reality set in that many of the legends of Black music are passing away. And after speaking with Motown founder Berry Gordy that night, Chew felt it was time to “give them their roses while they can smell them” so to speak, and what better time than Black History Month?

“A lot of the young artists that I encounter, Motown is in your blood stream whether you realize it or not,” said Chew. “When you rattle of the names of the artists and the songs everyone realizes how much this is part of the experience. Stevie Wonder alone…everyone has performed a Stevie Wonder song at some point. Artists are standing on the shoulders of these giants.”

The night will also include tributes to the late Nick Ashford, who Chew says was, “very close to me” and the recently departed Don Cornelius.

“His contribution to not only Black music and R&B and the support he gave the Motown artists can not be overstated,” Chew said of the Soul Train founder. “So he will be part of our tribute.”

Ryan Seacrest spoke with his American Idol colleague this morning and when asked about a quote from the interview, where the writer asked what most men compliment her on, she responded “Men don’t compliment me, they’re afraid of Mark.”

“Since I’ve been married — it’s gonna be seven years this year — people don’t really compliment me. I’m always wondering ‘do I look okay?’”

From his classic work with his group Goodie MOB, and with other members of Atlanta’s Dungeon Family Crew, penning the Pussycat Dolls’ hit single “Don’t Cha,” to turning the music world on its ear with his Gnarls Barkley project, Cee-Lo has been more successful than most people know.

One avenue for success that Cee-Lo turned down was that of American Idol judge.

Speaking with Vibe, Cee-Lo talked about being approached by Idol‘s Randy Jackson about filling one of the two spots left open by former judges Ellen DeGeneres and Simon Cowell.

“I was asked,” Cee-Lo says of joining the American Idol panel. “[Jackson and I] talked about it very, very casually. [He said,] ‘Go for it. It’s open, who could really argue with that? I support you.’”

While Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler were eventually given the nod, Cee-Lo says he doesn’t think the position was right for him

Fantasia Barrino was hospitalized for a medication overdose Monday night, hours after news of a reported sex tape starring her and her married boyfriend, Antwuan Cook, made headlines.

Barrino was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville at about 8:55 p.m. Monday, according to sources.

The sources say doctors at CMC noted that Barrino’s condition was not life-threatening.

The sources did not know what type of medication was involved, and it was not known whether the overdose was accidental or intentional.

Update:

TMZ reports that Fantasia’s rep has officially confirmed the overdose and that the American Idol winner is in the hospital.

A statement issued by Fantasia’s team revealed the cause of the singer’s overdose.

Fantasia has always been an open book. Honesty, self-respect, and personal responsibility are values she wears proudly.

Fantasia believed Mr. Cook when he told her he was not happy in his marriage and his heart was not in it. She believed him when he told her he and Mrs. Cook separated in the late summer of 2009. She believed Mr. Cook when he told her he lived elsewhere.

He even took her there. One of Mr. Cook’s most redeeming qualities was his complete devotion to his children. Fantasia fell in love with Mr. Cook and believed that he loved her.

Fantasia and Mr. Cook dated on and off for about eleven months. The pressure of the constant media attention was hard on their relationship. Fantasia gave inconsistent interviews about the status of her relationship with Mr. Cook because sometimes they were on and sometimes they were off.

When they were on, they spent most of their time together when she was not traveling with work.

Fantasia read Mrs. Cook’s Complaint against Mr. Cook for the first time yesterday. She knows some of the allegations in Mrs. Cook’s complaint are totally false. There are others she strongly doubts. There is plenty she does not know.

Fantasia is heartbroken and is sorry for any pain she may have caused. Yesterday, she was totally overwhelmed by the lawsuit and the media attention. Last night, Fantasia was hospitalized. She took an overdose of aspirin and a sleep aid.

Her injuries are not life threatening. She was dehydrated and exhausted at the time. Fantasia is stable now. She will be released from the hospital soon. Fantasia is a fighter and a survivor. This is not the hardest thing Fantasia has endured.

Fantasia will be stronger, smarter, and better for it. Her work has always inspired her and served as a source of strength. Her new album, “Back To Me,” will be released on August 24th.

The Commander-In-Chief and his wife will be making an appearance on an upcoming episode of Fox’s “American Idol.”

Barack and Michelle Obama filmed their appearance on the show on Wednesday for the show’s annual “Idol Gives Back” episode.

The “Idol Gives Back” episode is a charitable event that’s already raised more than $140 million for global charities.  The episode featuring the First Family will air on April 21st.

General Larry Platt, the American Idol contestant who received national attention for his song “Pants On The Ground”, is now facing backlash for his hit anthem.

General Platt recently recorded an official version of his homegrown theme song with the assistance of “This Is Why I’m Hot” rapper Mims.

According to distribution company American King Music, they funded the studio sessions and General Platt owes them money for “expenses related to producing, writing and recording of Mr. Platt’s official recording of the single.”

Attorney Leron Rogers of Hewitt & Rogers released a statement on behalf of the distribution company saying,

“My client, American King Music, who funded Mr. Platt’s recording session with Mims, would like to compensate Mr. Platt for the sales of the full-length hit song ‘Pants on the Ground’ which we made available on iTunes. However, Mr. Platt and his representatives have failed to take care of Mr. Platt’s obligations.”

As previously reported this is not the first time General Platt has faced controversy over his song.

“The Green Brothers” cried foul over the success of his song because it was too close to their musically inclined tune “Backpockets On The Floor.”

They have yet to take legal action against the General.

Chikezie Eze was at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills when he allegedly tried to use “fraudulent means” — possibly a phony check or credit card — to purchase merchandise.

Chikezie was detained by store security until the Beverly Hills cops arrived. The singer was then taken to Bev Hills jail and booked on felony identity theft.

The singer has been released on $50,000 bail.

Larry Platt is apparently gonna milk his 15 minutes of fame for all its worth.  He’s recorded a studio version of “Pants On The Ground,” the song he performed during American Idol auditions that made him a household name literally overnight.

According to TMZ, who posted the song on their website earlier, Platt’s former manager, Jason Mills, is releasing the song to radio stations without the permission of the artist.   He claims that he has the right to do it since the song is for promotional use and not for profit.

American Idol contestant Michael Lynche has a good reason to be angry at his father thanks to an article in The St. Petersburg Times.

An “American Idol” contestant picked last week for the Top 24 was booted over the weekend, according to reports.

The reason: his father told a local newspaper that his son made the semifinals, a violation of the show’s confidentiality rules.

Michael Lynche, called Big Mike on the show, was a high school football hero and his mother is a local columnist for the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, according to a report last week in her newspaper.

The paper reported that his father confirmed he’d made it to the Top 24.

The “Idol” spoiler site Joe’s Place, which has a history of digging up reliable inside info on the show’s contestants, reported over the weekend that Lynche has been replaced by another singer from the Top 50 qualifiers.

Fox declined to comment on the report yesterday.

The semifinalists are chosen at the end of Hollywood Week, when more than 120 hopefuls who got golden tickets in regional auditions move on to round two of the tryouts.

Lynche’s name appeared on several lists of the Top 24 contestants leaked on the Internet last week.

Lynche’s older brother, Marque Lynche Jr., made the “Idol” semifinals in 2004, but was cut before reaching the final 12, according to the Times’ report.

His Web site describes Lynche as a cross between Gnarls Barkley, Outkast and R. Kelly.

“Don’t Make ‘Em Like U No More” features a guest verse from Ruben’s brother in girth, Rick Ross.

Paula Abdul may have a new manager – but she may find herself without her old job on American Idol.

“Very sadly, it does not appear that she’s going to be back on Idol,” David Sonenberg, Abdul’s manager, told the Los Angeles Times, which also reports that a grassroots campaign took shape this weekend to keep Abdul on the show – along with other judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and recent addition Kara DioGuardi – for its ninth season, auditions for which start next month.

Though FOX said earlier this year that Abdul, 47, was “an integral part of the show,” Sonenberg says there is no contract on the table. “I find it under these circumstances particularly unusual; I think unnecessarily hurtful,” he said of the delay. “I find it kind of unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful that they haven’t stepped up and said what they want to do.”

I’m sure that’s bound to piss some Idol fan off. Since Abdul is making noise, check these cats out, too!

Alicia Keys appeared on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” program to drum up $5 donations toward the organization Keep a Child Alive by texting the word “alive” to 90999.

The charity, co-founded by Keys, aims to bring medicine and medical care to children and families with HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.

During her appearance, Keys also introduced a beneficiary of the charity, 15-year-old Rwandan rapper Noah, who performed on the show. The teen entertainer sings about the AIDS pandemic and life in Rwanda.

“He’s dealt with probably more than any of us will ever have to in our entire lifetime,” Keys told the Associated Press Wednesday. “For us to help people like him in his situation with Keep a Child Alive, and with everyone watching being able to know that even with all the hardships they might be going through, there’s always someone going through something far worse, so to help someone other than yourself is really a noble thing to do.”

Keys began the Text ALIVE Challenge while touring with her latest album, “As I Am.”

“It was really the first time anything like that had been done,” she said. “It was successful enough to encourage us to keep spreading the word in a forum like this.”

The seeds of her “Idol” appearance were planted last year at Keys’ annual charity gala, the Black Ball, where “Idol” creator Simon Fuller was honored. Noah performed at the event, and Fuller “was so taken by his story” that he invited Noah to appear on the hit show, Keys said.

Donation texts will be accepted until June 1. The $5 charge will appear on donors’ phone bill.

Paula Abdul, a six-time chart topper in the 1980s who sold over 23 million records worldwide, believes that her fame in the 1980s helped to lay the groundwork for such current pop superstars as Rihanna and Beyonce.

“My videos stand the test of time,” Abdul said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “They are like the almanac for every performer. Even Rihanna has come up to me and said ‘I hope you don’t mind.”

“And Beyonce. You can see the influence of what I’ve done. It’s really fun to see that I’ve left a mark. It was my idea to create an animated character. It takes a lot of focus, a lot time, and a lot of money.”

Abdul took a musical hiatus in 2000, and subsequently relaunched her career as a judge on the hit TV talent show “American Idol.” She returned to the pop charts in 2008.

Fantasia Barrino – who faces the loss of her $1.3 million home here in a debtor’s auction set for noon Monday – is apparently ignoring the looming legal threat, officials told The Post yesterday.

The inspirational “American Idol” winner owes a Florida credit company $65,000 – money she borrowed in 2006 to pay back taxes she owed the IRS.

The singer made a $10,000 payment in August 2007. But she never paid the rest, so the company won the right in court last month to auction off her house for the balance.

Mecklenburg County sheriff’s deputies, who are responsible for enforcing civil court orders, have tried at least a dozen times to reach Barrino at the home and by phone, said Sgt. J.W. England, a supervisor of civil judgments.

A deputy spoke a couple of times to Barrino’s mother, but never reached the star, who appears to be ignoring attempts to save her house, officials said.

“We try very hard and give the defendant every opportunity to pay,” England said yesterday.

Over the course of about a year, Barrino has never responded to court documents, and no lawyer ever appeared in court to represent her, said Larry Goldman, a Charlotte attorney representing the credit company, Broward Energy Management.

“I certainly don’t want anyone to lose their house,” Goldman said. “But as far as I’m concerned, we have a judgment.”

Barrino, 24, has made no payments and filed no documents since The Post reported a court-ordered lien on the property in Charlotte’s upscale Piper Glen neighborhood last month.

Goldman said he never heard from Barrino’s representatives until after the judge’s order. He said he has since spoken twice with reps who haven’t offered to resolve the debt but said they’d get back in touch before next Monday.

“My client has continuously asked me why they won’t just pay it,” Goldman said. “I just don’t have an answer.”

Barrino’s attorney, Gary Greenberg declined to comment yesterday.

“It’s my practice not to talk about client matters,” he said.

Barrino’s agent, Erin Culley, referred questions to the singer’s publicist but was unable to provide contact information for that person.

Barrino, who starred as herself in a Lifetime movie chronicling her rags-to-riches story, won the third season of “American Idol” in 2004. Her fame continued when she landed a role on Broadway in the “The Color Purple.” But she drew negative publicity after pulling out of the show with no explanation. She later told a magazine that she had been suffering from a cyst in her throat.

No one answered the door at the singer’s two-story home yesterday where four vehicles were parked outside.

After the auction comes a 10-day period when anyone can offer a higher upset bid. Depending on how many come in, the actual sale could take months. Once it’s final, the new homeowner is responsible for evicting whoever still lives there, England said.

In 2005, Barrino nearly lost another home she owns in Charlotte as well as her red $240,000 Mercedes Benz.

She apparently ignored a lien on that home, valued at $740,000, brought by the neighborhood association after she failed to pay fees and other costs. The case was eventually dismissed, according to court documents.

Last year, Barrino failed to pay a promissory note on $187,809 she borrowed to buy her Mercedes. The dealership that sold her the car sued, but the matter was resolved.

Paula Abdul is secretly planning to launch her own daytime talk show — even if her bosses at American Idol meet her hefty salary demands for the hit show’s ninth season.

The 46-year-old entertainer has been in talks with CBS/Paramount Network Television about developing the show — and sources say it could make its debut as early as next year.

“Paula’s been dreaming about having her own talk show for three years, and she’s ready to make it a reality,” a source close to the star told The ENQUIRER.

Paula envisions the new show focusing on issues that affect average people — plus an occasional celebrity guest, says the source.

As The ENQUIRER exclusively reported last week, Paula is renegotiating her current contract with “AI” execs and is asking to double her salary.

She will earn from $5 million to $7 million, but feels she’s worth $10 million. If she doesn’t get it, she will put the wheels of her talk show in motion immediately, says the source.

And if she does get her contract demands, Paula will attempt to negotiate a clause that states she can have other projects, including a talk show, and will juggle both.

“Paula is unpredictable and not afraid to speak her mind — but she also leads from the heart and really connects with people,” continued the source. “Studio execs feel those are the kind of personal attributes that would make her perfect for a daytime talk show.”

Paula Abdul has reportedly put her Los Angeles home on the market, a move that comes less than a month after one of her fans committed suicide outside her front gates.

According to Us Weekly, the American Idol judge has confirmed she is selling the house and intends to move to a new, more secure home in the city.

“Paula simply feels she has outgrown her house, and given the recent public disclosure of her address, it seemed time that she move into a gated community,” a rep for the celeb told Us Weekly.

Paula Goodspeed, 30, took a suspected drug overdose in her car outside of Abdul’s Sherman Oaks home on Nov. 11.

Abdul has denied reports that she was too afraid to return to the house.

The 27-year-old stepfather of Hudson’s nephew and estranged husband of her sister, William Balfour, told detectives investigating the case that he had a good relationship with the Hudson family. The police official stated on Wednesday, October 29th, speaking on condition of anonymity that Balfour stopped cooperating and refused to take the test.

Balfour has been at the center of the investigation since the bodies of Hudson’s mother, 57-year-old Darnel Donerson, and brother, 29-year-old Jason Hudson, were found Friday inside their home on Chicago’s South Side. The body of Balfour’s stepson, 7-year-old Julian King, was discovered Monday in an SUV on the city’s West Side. All three victims were shot.

No charges had been brought upon Balfour as of Wednesday and investigators are still gathering evidence and following up on leads. The SUV with the boy’s body inside was parked on the West Side leaving Balfour as “the only suspect in the killings and there is nothing to link a second individual to them,” according to the official.

Michele Balfour, the suspect’s mother, said that Hudson’s mother kicked him out of the family home last winter. She denied that her son had anything to do with the killings.

Balfour was arrested with cocaine in his car in June, but authorities declined to return him to prison on a parole violation. He also served seven years for a 1999 attempted murder and vehicular hijacking conviction.

A warrant for Balfour’s arrest was issued on Saturday for violating terms of his parole by possessing a weapon and failing to attend anger management counseling and a substance abuse program, according to his parole history report.

Darnell Donerson and Jason Hudson, the mother and brother of Academy Award-winning actress/singer Jennifer Hudson, were found fatally shot at their home in Chicago’s South Side. Husdon’s seven-year-old nephew, Julian King, was later found dead.
