There’s no conversation about style in hip-hop if there is no mention of Andre 3000. Musically, he’s widely respected as being light years ahead of his peers, and has been known to body other MCs when featured on their tracks. But where fashion and style are concerned, 3000 has also proven himself at the top of his class. Years ago, as one-half of the seminal hip-hop duo OutKast, Andre took risks in his fashion, not because he was trying to be anyone else, but himself.

“His style is like no other because he’s so content and so avante garde with who he is,” says celebrity stylist Mike B, who worked with Dre early in his career. “He’s so carefree with it.”

Mike B. points out GQ Magazine’s recent Dungeon Family spread, where Andre was dressed as a masked “Mr. X” and was noticeably styled a lot less than his peers. The spread featured Dre alongside Big Boi and a white robed-Cee Lo (complete with furry hood), who did the interview for the piece. For this shoot, Dre was simply dressed in jeans, a belt and boots. “He didn’t have on a full body of garments, but he still was fly and stood out to everybody.”

Dre’s fashion forward thinking dates back to his early days, which according to Mike B. set trends into motion. “Dre has been fashion, from day one. He was wearing jerseys before everyone else. He was doing the Atlanta Braves jersey with the furry Kangol. He does this,” laughs Mike B. “It’s not a costume to Dre, it’s his everyday lifestyle. Dre is 3000 and it’s still 2012 and folks are still trying to catch up.”

Rumors of a possible reunion have been recurring like a bad rash over the years, but nothing has materialized. However, Organized Noize’s Rico Wade has reason to believe that a reunion between the player and the poet could be closer to reality than we think. In speaking to TheUrbandaily about his new collaborative album with Nappy Roots, Nappy.org, Wade revealed than the pieces may finally be in place for a new Outkast album.

“Keeping it really real, L.A. Reid–and I’m not sure if he’s all the way in–he’s going to be at Epic. Epic has Jive and Jive has Outkast,” says Wade. “It is very real sh*t. But it’s about Andre 3000, is he gonna do it. [Well] Andre’s been calling me lately. He’s ready to go in. Us working with Nappy Roots has kept the creativity going [for me]. And Big Boi’s a worker.”

Wade and his Organized Noize production team are responsible for some of the best songs that Outkast has ever recorded, including their entire debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, released on Reid’s LaFace Records. With the Goodie Mob also reuniting, the timing couldn’t be better for the Dungeon Family to serve up some more soul food.

“We were just together on the 4th of July talking about it but I ain’t sent no beats to them or nothing,” says Wade. “We need the five of us to get together and vibe. I’m supposed to meet with L.A Reid this week. If Antonio is involved he’s a great motivator.”

The combination of Andre 3000 & Ke$ha is sure to catch you off guard, as Ke$ha isn’t exactly the type of artist you would expect Dre to work with. Fortunately, Andre’s verse is rather good.  Unfortunately, the rest of the song is rather wack.

We’d suggest turning the song off after the 57 second mark, unless you’re a masochist…

Andre 3000′s second first on the title track to Aquemini will always stand as one of my favorite rhymes of all time. He kicked his flow into fourth gear effortlessly bouncing on the beat as he challenged notions of religion, extra terrestrials and his own personal identity in hardest 24 seconds of any album.

While all of the below rhymes are noteworthy, fast forward to the 3:24 minute mark to see and hear what I’m talking about.

One look at the official tracklisting for Big Boi’s debut solo album Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty, and you’ll notice that there’s no songs featuring his partner in Outkast, Andre 3000.

Thanks to Jive Records (certainly not a misnomer), Andre 3000 has been forced off of Big Boi’s Def Jam Records release (minus one track that he produces).

Fortunately for the rest of us, the Internets don’t give a flying you-know-what about what a record label says, so here’s the song Jive Records didn’t want you to hear:

Erykah Badu continued her promo rounds for New Amerykah Part 2: Return Of The Ankh last night with an appearance on Chelsea Handler’s talk show, Chelsea Lately.

Chelsea asked Erykah for some advice on how to get a rapper boyfriend, which won’t surprise long time viewers of the show as she’s flirted pretty heavily with both T.I. and Ludacris when they were on her show.

Erykah’s response is pretty classic.

I think this is the *real* answer to Chelsea’s question:

The topic of Erykah’s otherworldly hold on men was also a topic in an interview with Time Out New York.

People have said that if someone looks you directly in the eye that they’re gonna wear crocheted pants. You know, like Common was with Erykah and he made Electric Circus and we don’t get Common anymore. That sort of thing.
That didn’t have anything to do with me. That was his creation

I didn’t say it did, but that was something people have said.
So who else did I change? Common and who else?

I think the reference is also to André.
I changed him, too?

I don’t know. But I think that’s what that rumor is referring to. Hasn’t he worn crocheted pants?
And the shoulder pads and the wig. Common wore those once in a photo shoot for Essence, and I styled the photo shoot. That one time. And he did that for me. I mean it’s an urban legend. I can’t explain. You gotta just let it be. We gotta stop the interview now because I see you’re falling in love, and I don’t want any more trouble. You don’t want to do that.

According to the New York Daily News, Andre 3000 of the hip-hop duo Outkast has been charged with driving 109 mph on a highway in suburban Atlanta.

Henry County Police Capt. Jason Bolton says the entertainer, whose real name is Andre Benjamin, was clocked speeding in a 65-mph zone in his Porsche south of Atlanta about 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

The 33-year-old Benjamin is free on $1,200 property bond pending a court date April 29. Cops say he told them he was going so fast because he missed an exit and had to turn around.

Hip Hop icon LL Cool J has joined the list of celebrities whose forays into the fashion world have produced less than stellar results. Advertising Age reports the rapper/actor’s signature apparel line is being advertised at up to 50 percent off the suggested retail price online. LL teamed with the Sears in May of 2008. According to Nielsen, Sears spent almost $500 million on advertising last year, but still saw their sales decline by $2.2 million.

The news of LL Cool J’s sales decline comes on the heels of Outkast’s Andre 3000 suffering similar losses at Barney’s with his high end Benjamin Bixby line. However, the failure of celebrity-endorsed apparel is not limited to the Hip Hop world.

“Even before the economy went bad, the market became oversaturated with celebrity brands,” Stardust Visions’ CEO Victoria Brynner tells Advertising Age. Stardust has brokered endorsement deals for Scarlett Johansson, and Katherine Heigl.

During 2007, celebs such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Amanda Bynes, Venus Williams and Ashley Judd have all seen their clothing lines fold, due to poor sales and/or loss of a distributor. In the meantime, Sears has not totally given up on Hip Hop’s self-proclaimed “greatest of all time.”

“At this point, we are still offering [the line] for fall back-to-school,” a Sears spokeswoman explained. “We’re working on the assortments right now and might edit some things as we see what’s resonating.”

Outkast’s Andre 3000 continues to receive accolades in his endeavors outside of the Hip-Hop realm. The rapper-turned-actor and much more has been heralded by GQ Magazine as one of the Best New Designers in America for his prep-inspired men’s line Benjamin Bixby.

As part of GQ’s third annual search, Dre, born Andre Benjamin, was selected alongside five other designers as “a class of designers whose vision is as broad and diverse as the country itself.”

Joining Benjamin Bixby are Save Khaki, Robert Geller, Yigal Azrouel, Shipley & Halmos, and Rogues Gallery.

If Lil Wayne is a Martian then what the hell is Andre 3000? Looking at what’s been popping over the last year or so it’s hard to ignore the return of Andre Benjamin to the mic. Reversing the trend of rappers wanting to sing, Outkast’s Andre Benjamin has spent the last year or so patiently reminding us that he is a damn good MC, one of the best alive right now. After taking a hiatus to serenade us on The Love Below, he started dropping guest verses in 2007 appearing on various cuts including “Walk It Out,” “Throw Some D’s,” “You,” Jay-Z’s “30 Something,” UGK’s “International Players Anthem,”and DJ Drama’s “Art of Storytelling 4.”

But what can we expect from a full length CD? Potentially, one of the best hip-hop albums since The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. With the ears of the music buying audience tenderized on Autotune vocals for most of 2008, Andre’s falsetto will be a welcome complement to his already celebrated lyrics. Very little is known about who will be producing but sonically, the multi-instrumentalist has always gone against the grain and given us some of the most lush and well-produced songs on the radio. The x-factor of course is that Andre actually WANTS to rap again, which typically makes all the difference with artists of his caliber. Maybe sitting on those acting checks and watching Lil Wayne make a killing with his whole swagger has given him the motivation to get back and give the people what they’ve been begging for.

At press time there was no working title for this project but if it comes out this year we’ll just call it a classic.

Disney has cast relativity unknown actor Garrett Hedlund as the lead in the Tron sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Heldund is probably most famous for playing Patroclus in Troy, with supporting roles in Eragon, Four Brothers and Friday Night Lights also on his CV.

Apparently Cloverfield star Michael Stahl-David was amongst those screen-tested by Disney for the project, with the likes of Ryan Gosling and Chris Pine also considered.

However it was ultimately Hedlund who landed the lead in the $150 million sci-fi follow-up, which will see him play a new man sucked inside a computer, and forced to retrace the steps of original programmer Kevin Flynn – played by Jeff Bridges in the original.

The trade mag also reports that the film has undergone yet another name change, with the sequel, previously known as Tron 2 and Tr2n, now called simply Tron.

Bridges reprises his role from the first movie, with his character now the CEO of software corporation, whilst Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett have also been cast. Architect-turned-commercials director Joseph Kosinski will helm.

A new lawsuit filed in a Boston courtroom claims that the Andre 3000-created Cartoon Network series Class of 3000 was not as original as the rapper, or the network would have viewers believe, the Boston Herald reports.

Former art student Timothy McGee is suing the Outkast star, as well as Cartoon Network and its parent company Turner Broadcasting for $2 million in damages, citing copyright infringement, breach of contract and misappropriation of trade secrets in the creation of the award winning show.

He is requesting compensation in the form of all the profits from the show, as well as court fees and any other payment the courts may see fit.

“We’ve requested $2 million in damages thus far,” said McGee’s attorney Jerrold Neeff. “The rest remains to be seen.”

According to 33-year-old McGee, in 1997 he submitted a show idea to then Cartoon Network vice president of programming Michael Lazzo about a show following the lives of a group of young musicians, “as they try to break into Atlanta’s burgeoning music scene.”

At issue for McGee, the lawsuit says, is the impression that the “characters, artwork, storylines and concepts” he developed for his show were heavily borrowed upon for Dre’s show, which aired from November 2006 to May 2008.

It seems like just yesterday we were geeked about the new video for “Ordinary People” directed by Kanye West. Or not long ago that “Save Room” from his sophomore CD was the new hotness. And chances are, when we hear those tracks in years to come they will evoke that same kind of timeless appreciation. As is the case with this latest collection of songs on Evolver, the third installment from singer/songwriter John Legend.

Attempting to live up to it’s lofty title, the lead single “Greenlight” (see video below) featuring OutKast rapper, Andre 3000 is an escape from Legend’s comfort zone of adult contemporary music. Though the pairing is a bit of a mismatch the song is probably one of his most radio friendly tunes in a while. Falling into that very same category are “Quickly” featuring Brandy,”Cross The Line” and “No Other Love” featuring Estelle, each standing as a proverbial loosening of the tie for Legend with their heavily drummed and synthesized arrangements. Re: evolution.

Although Legend’s piano isn’t as ever present as in previous projects, he is at his best when he dwells in the realm in which this CD was suppose to be a departure from. Songs like “If You’re Out There” and “Everybody Knows” represent Legend in his classic form and are the gems of the entire project.

What remains consistent with Legend as he experiences this evolution is his voice. Throughout Evolver, his voice is strong and full, never wavering or attempting notes it cannot own, even in falsetto (“I Love, You Love”).

All in all, we suggest you don’t take our word for it. We’re biased. We’ve always had a preference for music that we could run on repeat from early afternoon until the after party.

Our personal favorite is “It’s Over” featuring Kanye West and that damn vocoder. — KEVIN R. SCOTT
