Beyonce and Lady Gaga have received the most MTV Video Music Awards nominations with nine, including a nod for video of the year.

Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” and Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” will compete against Britney Spears’ “Womanizer,” Eminem’s “We Made You” and Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” in the category.

Other major contenders at the VMAs include Spears, who nabbed seven noms, and Eminem, Coldplay and West, who are each up for four prizes. Taylor Swift, Pink, Muse and Green Day are slated to perform.

The VMA awards will be handed out at the Sept. 13 telecast in New York and will be hosted by Russell Brand.

Rapper Asher Roth says he is not a hip hop artist with a tough urban background, instead the rising star reads George Orwell and revels in a happy-go-lucky attitude that seems far from streetwise.

Roth, whose debut single “I Love College” was a hit in the United States and Britain earlier this year, says he is part of a new breed of suburban kids who like hip hop music and go to college and still want to shake up society.

Standing out in a musical genre dominated by black artists, Roth, who began his first U.S. tour this week, has been likened to top-selling white rapper Eminem, which leaves 23-year-old Roth dumbfounded but flattered.

“As I Em”, a song from his album “Asleep in the Bread Aisle” that hit the top five on U.S. record charts when it was released three months ago, rejected those comparisons.

“I was just astonished because in content and who I am as a person is so far on the opposite end of the spectrum that Eminem was representing,” he told Reuters.

But Roth knows that there are not too many other people in his music genre to whom he can be likened. “Being a white kid doing hip hop, how many people can you compare that to?”

Roth, from Morrisville, Pennsylvania, studied elementary education in college. He has been described as “preppy” by the New York Times, which said few white rappers had “acted with as much postmodern self-awareness.”

Roth says his experiences growing up with nothing to do in the suburbs except listen to hip hop, make a mix CD and cruise the streets were common. His lyrics are filled with light references to marijuana and women. His audiences are largely under 21 years-old.

“There is a youth movement coming up with a lot of kids, similar to me, who don’t represent the struggle,” Roth said, referring to the tough childhoods of some rappers.

“We went to school and then went to college. And a lot of kids have a nice, modest background and we have to rap about what we know,” he said.

Because “I Love College” includes lyrics and stories of partying, drinking and sex, Roth said many people have confused him for a fraternity member. “The frat boy has the protocol of just being a wild drinker, almost misogynist type thing, that is not who I am at all,” he said, adding he wrote the song at 21. “You grow up a lot in two years.”

Despite his success, Roth’s ambitions do not include selling out huge stadiums, instead he wants to start a school.

“I couldn’t care less about being a huge mega pop star,” he said. “I know that I can’t rap forever, do I want to rap forever? Absolutely not.”

With Eminem’s Relapse gaining much anticipation for its May 19 release [click to read], the Detroit rapper is giving each aspect of the new album proper exposure.

On Saturday, May 2, his music video for “3 A.M.” [click to listen] will premiere exclusively on Cinemax at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Because Cinemax is a premium television network, the video for “3 A.M.” will be aired completely uncensored. The music video is directed by Syndrome, who specialize in live-action directing and have done previous work with artists such as the Black Eyed Peas, Swizz Beatz, and Talib Kweli.

The debut of Em’s video will precede the television premiere of “The Strangers,” and will play throughout the month of May. Thus far, Eminem has released a street single with “Crack a Bottle” featuring 50 Cent and Dr. Dre, as well as the track and music video for “We Made You” [click to watch].

There was talk about people saying he sounded like me, and he was doing this and that and, you know, trying to take what I do and do it. You know, shit like that. I’ve heard things. But the stuff that I’ve heard from him honestly, which certainly isn’t enough for me to make my own opinion and say, ‘Yeah, he does sound like me’ or ‘No, he doesn’t.’ But the couple of songs I’ve head, I don’t really think he does. April 20 is a big day for Asher Roth, as the young rapper sees the release of his first album, Asleep In The Bread Isle. Recently, he traveled back to Pennsylvania to perform at his alma mater, West Chester University.

“It’s a little crazy, man. It just goes to show you it’s working,” said Asher to MTV News. “This music is bringing people together. West Chester, I’m kinda cheating a little bit, because that’s home. So it isn’t until I walk the streets of British Columbia and people are outside waiting for me. Then, I know, ‘OK, this is really working.’ ”

Asher Roth has found success with his “I Love College,” which has become a favorite at schools across the nation. In addition, he’s had a steadily growing buzz on the Internet. The rapper is currently on a promotional tour for his album all across the nation – but he feels most comfortable at home.

“You know that you can just go up there and totally be yourself and the crowd’s going to be there with you,” he said. “Being here in PA – and this is just another one of those state schools – where we used to just come and hang out and just, on numerous occasions, kind of walk these streets, so then we pull up [now] and it says, ‘Asher Roth: sold out.’ It’s like I’m starting a new life, man.”

As two of Hip Hop’s newly-celebrated artists, Asher Roth and Drake have created their own cult followings across the country. Subsequently, both emcees have announced tour dates for fans to attend as the season of spring rolls in.

Starting with the Pennsylvania-native, Roth has secured several tour dates across the east coast to promote his SRC debut album Asleep in the Bread Aisle. Including an appearance at the Bamboozled Music Festival in early May, Roth will also hit New York and Maryland, along with a free MySpace concert on album release day (4/20) with Chester French.

Hip-hop and basketball have always had a deep fascination with one another. They borrow from each other culturally and commercially like cousins that grew up in houses next door to each other. We’ll forget about athletes trying to put albums out for a minute and focus on rappers metaphorically comparing themselves to the sport’s best to illustrate their standing amongst their musical peers—whether it’s Jay-Z referring to himself as the “Mike Jordan of the mic recordin’” or some up-and-coming rap phenomenon thinking that he’s the Lebron James of the rap game. And while the argument about who’s best gets stale after the same 10 names get shuffled in some random order the debate over who’s next refreshes every year when a new crop of rap prospects looking to make their mark in music step up.

With March Madness calling it a wrap, sports writers shift gears and kick start fans’ anticipation of the upcoming NBA season with a bevy of mock drafts, where “draft experts” take educated guesses on which college and international prospects get picked to play in the league, and when they will get selected.

Since hip-hop journos such as myself are obsessed with analyzing new artists in hopes of finding the rap heir apparent I thought it would be interesting take this year’s promising rap rookies and put them into a fictional “rap draft” where music label executives would be forced to draft their talent instead of sweet-talking them into shitty contracts.

For the two-round mock rap draft I’ve selected the most noted rookie rappers that have yet to put out a major label album—this includes prolific unsigned rappers, those signed to indies and also those signed to a major but still have no album out yet. For the sake of sanity, I intentionally excluded rappers that are older than 30 years old like Jay Electronica and/or those that have been hanging around the national scene for more than 5 years like Saigon & Bishop Lamont.

The Lottery

• 1. Asher Roth: It’s easy to peg the melanin-deficient emcee as just another Marshall Mathers clone, and while there are obvious similarities in rhyme style and flow to Eminem, Asher more than holds his own as a supremely talented and charismatic rapper with his own identity and will have his own fan base. For label suits, Asher Roth is a one man Beastie Boy—an engaging personality that’s able to bust onto the pop scene and connect with record buying suburban slackers like a Seth Rogan giving away free weed. We like him also. Okay, I think I used up all of my cool Caucasian guy references for the day.

• 2. Drake: A few months ago nobody talked about Drake. These days, I can’t go anywhere without hearing somebody mentioning the name of Lil Wayne’s well-manicured homeboy. The Toronto rap export, who’s also a damned good singer and a pretty decent actor, is a legitimate triple threat and, in that, has star written all over his forehead in permanent black marker. Think of him as kind of a not-so-PG Will Smith with a singing voice. Heartbreak Drake is probably the first new rapper who’s actually had more females download his mixtape than fellas. That, people, is a very good thing.

• 3. Wale: Wale is this rap class’ Lupe Fiasco—an acclaimed lyricist whose critical appeal will far outpace his commercial success. The Washington, DC-bred emcee is his city’s best rap prospect ever, which isn’t saying much because the nation’s capitol has churned out as many rap successes as Albuquerque. Wale’s go-go infused hip-hop sound, link to international cool guy/ DJ Mark Ronson and appeal to tight pant enthusiasts means the Mixtape About Nothing emcee will enjoy a loyal fan base for years to come.

• 4. Bobby Ray: The artist formally known as B.o.B. is a soulful crooning rapper that sounds like the accidental offspring of the Dungeon Family and Dave Chapelle. His sound is entertainingly unconventional and his content unapologetically revealing. The problem with Bobby Ray is sound consistency. You never know what he’ll sound like from one song to the next, which may be refreshing to listeners but it frustrates the hell out of his label. Atlantic Records doesn’t know what to with the promising yet raw 19-year-old A-town rapper. They just transferred him to the label’s rock department.

• 5. Kid Cudi: Kanye’s newest prodigy is a continuation of 808s & Heartbreak. While not exceedingly blessed as a rapper or a singer Ohio’s lonely stoner is a superb songwriter who has a gift for melody, which he stuffs into his expertly crafted emo raps. When we debuted his “Day n Night” video on Black Planet readers overloaded our servers with love/ hate comments about the song. Expect that same response when his album drops.

The Remaining First Round

• 6. Nipsey Hussle: In person, he reminds you of a young Snoop Dogg- a lanky, long-braided crazy skinny dude with a laid back Cali vibe. Musically, he reminds you of everything that made that gangsta shit so appealing. Nipsey maintains LA’s classic set claimin pedigree sonically but progresses it lyrically with his contemporary swag and grimy narratives. This Slauson boy is most promising thing to come out of the West since Crooked I & Game.

• 7. The Cool Kids: Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks’ nostalgic anti-pop music worked well for rap nerds and music journalists but still failed to stick to the walls of sales charts with their independently released EP the Bake Sale. The Chi-Town duo has an undeniable energy and a distinct fresh sound- and with a decent budget behind them and little more development the Cool Kids could be among the rap group greats.

• 8. Blu: This kid does it for me, no bromance. His problem is that he’s so nice that he’ll never go mainstream. Leaning on classic boom bap production Blu is a throwback-type with a Pharcyde slant and a Mos Def-like liquid delivery. The Left Coast rhymesayer is a refreshing reminder that California is more diverse than rappers that bang and go dumb.

• 9. Cory Gunz: They’ve been talking about this kid for a few years but he’s just now old enough to really step out. The son of Peter Gunz’ is a rap phenomenon but he’s this generation’s Jadakiss—he murders it on other people’s tracks (see “A Milli”) but pump fakes when it comes to his own. Like many mixtape greats before him he has trouble making sustainable album cuts. He’s like a young street ball legend unable to adapt his game to the NBA. I’m not sure he can carry a whole album on his own—unless he gets under the right production situation.

• 10. Charles Hamilton: Charles Hamilton is an enigma. The Harlem rapper is either inconsistent as hell or simply raw. He’ll show flashes of brilliance on one song but then will turn around and sound like Jo Jo from Run’s House on the next. His success with “Brooklyn Girls” propelled him onto everybody’s radar as a potential star but his lack of follow-ups anywhere near the same caliber makes me question if he was grossly overhyped. With a little more seasoning he should be pretty solid because he has the potential to be something good—that is, unless his obsession with all things pink and Sonic does him in first.

Second Round Gems

• Black Milk: The good and bad thing about this Detroit rapper/producer is that he’s trying to be the second coming of the late producer J Dilla. He’s dope nonetheless.

• Diamond: We need some female representation on this list and before this Crime Mobster defected Diamond was the strongest member of her group- it also helps that her easiness on the eyes will make her just as easy to market. The lack of any legitimate female rappers leaves this particular lane wide open and so, Ms. 32 can tap into her Crime Mob fan base, take the fans that Trina left behind when she fell off, for starters, and then work on everybody else as she picks up steam.

• Micky Factz: There are kids who think they are from the 80s and there are cats like Micky that belong there. That’s not a slight, he’s good. As a matter of fact, he may very well become an underground legend when this is all said and done I just don’t see the mainstream eating him up. Pause.

• Tyga: Travis McCoy’s little cousin is a good pick up because he has some pop appeal. Surround him with people that can churn out hits, put money behind one or two singles and then call it a day because he may become irrelevant like Chingy. He has a fickle style.

• Curren$y: The New Orleans rhymer brings name recognition because of his one-time association with Lil Wayne and his hit “Where Da Cash At.” Since Weezy’s former protege broke off to do his own thing I haven’t heard much but he’s still a beast on the bars when he’s on.

• Pacific Division: Pac Div is LA’s answer to Slum Village. They dress well and make good music so does that make them hipster-hoppers? I don’t know but these guys, along with U-N-I and Blu & Exile, embrace that classic Native Tongue-esque sound and are leading the West Coast’s reemergence into the boom bap.

• Brisco: The Opa Locka, FL goon brings the goon to the music. He goes hard on top of the 808 kicks and when he’s not leaning heavy on Lil Wayne for his singles he’s exhibits a distintive rhyme style that works.

• Donny Goines: Goines is my sleeper pick. The NY spitter’s profile is still beneath the surface but he gets my nod because he not only throws out quality joints but he stays on his grind like a prostitute trying to make quota.

“Asher Roth may be the epitome of keeping it real.

On the surface, there’s nothing inherently special about the 23-year-old rapper who’s set to drop his debut LP later this month. Roth is far from a wannabe and makes no attempt to hide his suburban upbringing. In a recent sit down with The Wall Street Journal, Roth dropped his thoughts on Hip Hop and all those comparisons to another famous white rapper.

Ultimately, he blames the commercialization of Hip Hop and Hip Hop culture that brought him to where he is today. “Unlike Eminem, I’m classic white,” he says of his style and sound. “I’m talking about yoga and yogurt covered in fruit. I represent more of a suburban middle-class lifestyle.”

While he believes Hip Hop is universal, he gives all of the credit to the original pioneers of the industry, many of whom are black.”

Staying real to oneself is something well respected within hip hop these days. Asher Roth came out with his mixtape The Greenhouse Effect and the buzz began. Anyone who has the nerve to claim the world’s gone mad because Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are hitched is down. It’s a new generation arising where hip hop is back to being about talent instead of image.

Where people can talk about college and it’s cool. Roth manages to do this on the track “I Love College” with blunt lines like, “Time isn’t wasted when you’re getting wasted/Woke up today and all I could say is/That party last night was awfully crazy I wish we taped it.” Mind you he’s singing throughout the lines in this song.

He gains more cool points by bringing up Teddy Ruxbin in the song “Lark On My Go-Kart” both off his upcoming album Asleep in the Bread Aisle. One might get tripped up on the fact that his voice and delivery is similar to Eminem’s. Yet you soon realize it’s someone whose not trying to be another Eminem, Beastie Boy or dare I say Vanilla Ice. Asher Roth is just that… Asher Roth. Hip-hop is evolving and he shows this by his delivery, persona and content.

Asleep in the Bread Aisle is refreshing and insightful because you find that Asher is smart enough to admit that someone shouldn’t automatically be written off because he likes to party and he’s got a brain that he uses as well.

After dropping word, yesterday, about Asher’s adventures in LAX – the new school champion sits down and talks about his heroism. Asher Roth’s guitarist and bass player Chris Llewellyn recently spoke to the Los Angeles Times on the specifics of the incident.

After hearing a flight attendant yell, “Help me, help me“, Llewellyn and six other passengers came to the flight attendant’s aid.

“We were all sitting in our seats,” Llewellyn told the Times. “My boys had their headphones on. I turned around and got up and ran to the back of the plane. The suspect was yelling, ‘Don’t come near me, I have a bomb, I have a bomb!’”

It has yet to be announced if the suspect actually had a bomb.

“We all jumped him,” Llewellyn explained. “He was struggling hardcore. I was holding down his arm. Somebody had a foot on his head. Everyone was holding down a different body part. He was going nuts. I was telling him to chill because he’s not going anyplace.”

Asher Roth and his band were flying to Los Angeles to appear on Carson Daly’s late-night-TV show, Last Call with Carson Daly. Llewellyn did make a brief appearance on the show last night (January 7th) to discuss the incident.
