French Montana is the latest addition to Diddy‘s Bad Boy Records roster, but will French Montana be hit with the Bad Boy curse like Shyne, Black Rob, Mase, G-Dep and the other rappers who had unhappy endings? Bad Boy is looking pretty strong these days by signing MGK (Machine Gun Kelly) and Red Cafe, but will they fall off like most of their predecessors?

The new slate off Bad Boy artists and Cassie recently visited BET and French Montana said, “The team is lookin’ mean right now … It’s take over time.” Check the video for more comments from the Bad Boy family, and vote in our poll!

“Shakedown!!!” can be heard in the background of numerous rap records. It is Red Cafe‘s way of branding not only himself but his debut album. He has done an admirable job thus far, especially being that he has had some discrepancies with major labels. Though he was content with being an Independent artist, a deal with Bad Boy Records was just too good to pass up.

Why put out one last mixtape before the album?

I personally feel that I’m supposed make the people be positive that I’m a brand that they can trust. The only way you can do that is to give them music to make it “Bible.” I want them to wake up and feel like it is necessary to listen to Red Cafe to get their day started. I think that you have to give to get, you have to give a couple of records away to build their confidence. I want to prove myself to people time and time again.

What can we expect from Shakedown?

You should expect honesty from the album. A record you can listen to 5-10 years from today. The most important thing about me and my music is that I don’t compromise who I am. You’ll be able to party to it and feel sexy to it. Get your champagne flukes, I think I’ll have a record for every purpose.

Do you feel a lot of artists aren’t being themselves in Hip Hop right now?

It’s entertainment. There are a lot of people out there who put on a mask and they become the person they feel is interesting for the people to see. I’m just not that person. I want to be able to be proud of my music, years from today.

How did the deal with Diddy come about?

I definitely went through a journey with record companies and it being unsuccessful and them not knowing what to do with me or me just getting in at bad timing. A lot of the record companies end up folding. I was passed the record company signing situation, I was just I’m going to be an Independent artist and control the wheel and do my own thing. That showed me success I had great records out that people were responding to. I just felt like I was doing good job on my own. Finally Puff, Jimmy Ivine and the Interscope staff liked what I was doing and they just wanted to be apart of the movement. They wanted to be a support system to help me get the level they felt I was supposed to be on. They reached out to me and it made sense.

Were you ever fearful of signing with Bad Boy given their history with artists?

Not at all. Whatever deal I wanted to sign with Diddy is what we talked about. Before I signed any papers I made sure we came to the terms I was comfortable with and that’s the most important thing. If you have an attorney that represents you, you negotiate a deal, if you sign the deal you can’t get upset about it. You signed it, nobody held a gun to your head. I also feel like I’m my own person I control the wheel for my destiny. I don’t have to wait on Puff to do anything for me and that’s probably the problem with the other artists. After he made them platinum artists it was their job to take the wheel and start doing their own thing and start building their own business structure themselves instead of waiting on him to hold their hand. I think that’s where the disconnect happens. I think motherf****rs need to grow up!

Do you think that was the issue with a lot of the artists on Bad Boy that have been dropped?

Definitely, artists get caught up in his lifestyle, trying to live in his lifestyle and not focusing on themselves. I think that was the disconnect and they just expected Puff to just continue to do everything for them. Even when you are on a regular record label you have that initial interest with the person who signs you–they hold you down they help you go platinum or gold…then they move on to the next artist. You have to take the initiative and take control over your situation.

How has it been working with Diddy?

He’s really motivating to me, he’s an inspiration. He constantly challenges me. He went from being an intern, working hard to become the man he is today. He came from having nothing to making it work. He works like his bank account says zero.

Favorite artist right now?

I like how consistent Lil Wayne is. He’s putting out great records, he’s really focused on him and his brand and making them really special in the game. I appreciate what he is doing.

Thoughts on the state of Hip Hop?

People are making great records, there’s not a bunch of bad records out there getting attention. You got Drake, who is making great records with a lot of reality behind it and he’s making a record out of it which is dope creatively and for music. You got Watch The Throne, which is very special-it showed a lot of integrity. I think Hip Hop is going in a great place.

Since making his first appearance on a rap record in 1998, G. Dep has had a turbulent journey. Dep, once a promising artist on Bad Boy records, has had a career marred by excessive drug use and arrests. Through his experience G. Dep has shown that as ruthless as the music business can me, nothing can compare to the wrath of your inner demons.

G. Dep, short for Ghetto Dependent, signed a five album deal worth $350,000 with Bad Boy Records in 1998. He was featured on Gang Starr’s “The Mall” from their 1998 album The Moment Of Truth and two cuts on Black Rob’s debut, Life Story, in 1999. Dep, born Trevell Coleman, hit the studio with Diddy and Black Rob to craft songs for his debut effort, Child of the Ghetto. One of the winners created was “Let’s Get It.” With its sample of Al Green’s “Love And Happiness” and a video that put the “Harlem Shake” dance on the national map it was an undeniable hit. In fact, it was almost TOO good.

Although meant for G.’s freshman offering, Diddy lived up to his “take that, take that” ad-lib and jacked the song for his disc, The Saga Continues. Diddy’s last solo effort Forever sold well but was nowhere close to the popularity of 1997′s No Way Out and this was his chance to get his “swagger” back. G-Dep’s debut was finally released in 2001 with “Special Delivery” as the the anchoring single. That track hit number three on the Hot Rap singles charts and a remix video was released in 2002 in an attempt to extend the life of the album.

During this period Coleman’s personal demons began to resurface. In 2008, Dep revealed to XXL Magazine that he had been arrested more than 25 times since 2003 for drug offenses, burglary, and grand larceny. He said his troubles began out of desperation and the lack of sales of his joint album with Loon entitled, Bad Boy, which was released independently in 2007. Dep was shelved at Bad Boy and needed money to feed his children. Coleman spoke to Ms. Drama about how Diddy called him to the studio that year, telling him he was dropped from the label.

“He called and said, ‘Meet me at the studio. We need to talk.’ He was going through a rough time and had to make decisions. He had to cut off some loose ends and I was just one of them.”

Unfortunately, that was not the end of G-Dep’s struggles. On January 13, 2010, G. Dep turned himself in and confessed to a shooting that had taken place in 1993. He said that he had attempted to confess twice before, but was thought to be under the influence of PCP and his confession was denied. When indicted on second degree murder charges he pleaded not guilty, citing that he did not realize the victim died from his wounds. He is facing life in prison if convicted.

Sadly, G-Dep was one of the last artists from Bad Boy’s glory days to make headlines and it was for all the wrong reasons. Red Cafe better take notes.

Rapper G-Dep told the New York Post that he didn’t know the man he confessed to shooting in 1993, John Henkel, had died from the gunshot wound.

“I was surprised — for some reason, I really didn’t think that he died,” said G. Dep, who’s real name is Trevell Coleman. “When they told me, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m not going home after this.’”

RELATED: Former Bad Boy Rapper G-Dep Admits To Murder; Held Without Bail

Coleman had become overcome with guilt about the shooting, feeling that everything bad in his life was karma for the act.

“I thought that if I turned myself in, it might give me closure. I’m just trying to get right with God.”

If convicted of the murder G-Dep faces life in prison.

G-Dep came to prominence in 1999 when he signed to Sean Comb’s Bad Boy label and released the album Child Of The Ghetto in 2001. One of the most popular songs from that album was “Special Delivery.”

It’s a clear consensus throughout music land that signing to Bad Boy is like signing your life away to the devil. Diddy thinks everyone is stupid because he claims that he has done nothing malicious to anyone(we’re supposed to believe that?).

Lets see the artists that have been on Bad Boy that have FAILED or are MIA:

Carl Thomas, Faith Evans, 112, Total, G-Dep, Shyne, The Lox, Donnie Klang, Da Band, Danity Kane, B5, Mario Winans, Loon, Mase, Biggie Smalls, Dream, Cheri Denis…and I’m sure there’s more!

Spotted at MissJia.com

Here’s what he had to say:

“There’s an off perception that needs to be addressed about me that I have ever robbed somebody or mistreated somebody. Or tried to be ruthless or whatever in this game. Like, all this year I’ve heard people say, “Where’s Carl Thomas, where’s Black Rob, where’s G.Dep? Where are these artists?” And for some reason they go ahead and equate that, cause those artists aren’t with me, that I’ve done something wrong or malicious or conniving. It’s something that I do have a problem with because they don’t have no proof that I’ve ever done nothing like that.

It’s a misconception. Especially someone who’s been brought up like me. I’ve been brought up to work hard for mine and never take from nobody. And to always try and help people. But people don’t understand this game that were in. You have a short life expectancy. It’s rare to a me, to be a Jay-Z, an LL, a Nas. That shit is a rarity. That’s not even one percent of the rappers. If you look at any artists that were on Ruff Ryders, where they at? If you look at any artist that was on Def Jam at the time we started, where they at? If you look at any artist that was on Roc-A-Fella, Jive, where they at? It’s not like anything was wrong with them. It’s just that you have a four, five-year average in this game. That’s just something I wanted to address.”

Oh really Diddy?

I normally don't post trailers for music videos, but Janelle Monae is very underrated, and this video looks like it's gonna be something more than a bunch of dudes ice grilling a camera in front of a rented mansion and/or rented cars.

Check out the trailer for Janelle Monae's video "Tightrope" featuring Big Boi.

As promised, a group of vodka makers sent toilets full of bottles of Ciroc to Diddy's midtown Manhattan offices.

The vodka makers were "protesting" comments Diddy recently made at a party where he said that all other brands of vodka were "pee pee" compared to Ciroc.

Ok... on to the next one.

And then there was The Roc! Jay-Z, Memphis Bleek, Amil, Beanie Siegel, Freeway, DJ Clue, and Cam’ron all threw up the signature “diamond.”

Bad Boy had Biggie while the Roc had Jay, both labels had one of the best rappers ever. Bad Boy has Diddy and Roc-a-fella had Dame Dash. Diddy coined the “shiny-suit” era and Dame changed fashion with Rocawear.

Both labels were trendsetters but who did it bigger and better?

It shows the Bad Boy CEO in a pretty unflattering light, which he more than realizes and accepts as his flaw as an artist.
