A lot of hoopla has been made over NBC’s decision to celebrate Black History Month with fried chicken and collard greens on their lunch menu. Do you know how black people became associated with the food?

Fried foods date back to ancient cultures in Europe, Asia, and even North America. In medieval times, fried chicken was already being eaten in western Europe. Scottish immigrants to the United States are often credited with being the ones to introduce fried chicken to the country where as most other European immigrants to the country ate baked chicken.

Many of these Scottish immigrants settled in the southern United States where fried chicken became extremely popular. When African slaves who worked as cooks were brought to the country, they put their own spin on the dish using seasonings and spices not found in most Scottish dishes.

Most slaves weren’t able to raise more expensive meats, and were allowed to have chickens, so frying chickens became a common occurrence on special occasions throughout black communities in the south.

In the 19th and 20th century, foods like fried chicken, chitlins, and watermelon became considered stereotypes, no thanks in part to minstrel shows, and restaurants like Sambo’s and Coon Chicken Inn.

From The NYPOST

A Brooklyn judge agreed with Busta Rhymes that “Money Talks” — and yesterday ordered him to fork over $75,000 to a fan who said the rapper assaulted him at a concert.

The East Flatbush-born Rhymes sent his lawyer to argue the judgment on grounds that the rap star wasn’t properly notified of the case, causing him to miss seven hearings. That led a hearing officer to make the cash award.

But Supreme Court Justice Donald Kurtz didn’t agree with Rhymes’ lawyer, Anthony Xanthakis.

“It looks like we busted up Busta’s rhyme,” cracked lawyer Ron Hart, who represented the injured fan, Alex Duncan, a 32-year-old Albany resident.

Duncan had hoped to see another rapper, Fabolous, at the show on the SUNY-Albany campus in 2003. But Fabolous didn’t show. Disappointed, Duncan said he stood up so he could leave as soon as Rhymes left the stage.

But his standing up drew Rhymes’ attention, Duncan testified.

“You didn’t hear me say, ‘Get down?’ ” Rhymes asked.

“I don’t got to move,” Duncan replied — and in an ensuing exchange, he added that he’d come to to see Fabolous, not Rhymes.

That seemed to anger Rhymes. “I’m not good for you?” he asked. Duncan says Rhymes then splashed him with one bottle of water and pelted him with two more. Also, he said, Rhymes’ bodyguard punched him.

Rhymes failed to challenge Duncan’s allegations in court, and the hearing officer set the $75,000 award on Oct. 14.

It’s rather interesting that this topic has even been brought up for debate as Jay’s song doesn’t exactly paint the best portrait of the Big Apple: drugs, prostitution, and so forth.

However, if MSG wants to keep the rules a little loose for what the true New York City anthem is, here’s a few more suggestions:

Okay not a bad effort. Maybe not as good as the first but still I was impressed. Hopefully this wil start a movement in Hip Hop where rappers no longer encourage the youth to kill each other and sell drugs but tell the realities of what’s going on in the hood without glorifying negative activity.

Busta Rhymes was ordered to pay $75,000 to a man that accused the rap star of assaulting him after an attack in 2003.

Alex Duncan claimed Busta Rhymes, born Trevor Nelson and an unnamed bodyguard sprayed water on him, punched and beat him during a rap concert at SUNY Albany.

According to the New York Post, during court proceedings, Duncan claimed that he suffered psychological damages and has nightmares because of the attack.

“I wanted something to come out of it. I don’t even go to parties anymore, because there’s always someone asking, ‘What happened to that Busta Rhymes case, ” Duncan testified in court.

Robert Kalina, Busta Rhymes’ lawyer for the trial, was not in court for the trial or damage hearings.
