4/20 was started back in the 70′s by some kids who would meet at 4:20 pm by the Louis Pasteur statue outside their school and search around for the cannabis plants that grew wildly over there. After finding some cannabis they used it to “blaze it up.” Somehow it evolved into a national celebration for cannabis lovers. From what I hear when people used to go to Central Park, they(I don’t know who “they” are) would drop marijuana from the sky (funny right).

Other names for marijuana: piff, kush, weed, chronic, haze, drough, sour diese, etc.

He got our attention up until the album dropped and a bunch of people went out and bought it.  Mission accomplished.  He didn’t need to throw us anymore mediocre free cuts anymore even though he said the series would continue until Christmas.

But Kanye surprisingly stuck to his word and gave us our Christmas gift early in the form of “Christmas In Harlem,” the final (?) entry into the free “G.O.O.D. Music” downlaod series.

“Christmas In Harlem features an all-star cast of B-List and No-List guests (c’mon, Cam & Jim Jones haven’t been A-Listers since Dipset’s peak in ’05, you can admit it).  In addition to Cam’ron and Jim Jones, Yeezy’s new favorites, Pusha T, Big Sean and CyHi Da Prynce spit a few bars while Musiq Soulchild and Teyana Taylor (ohhhh… so she’s a singer?) add some soulful vocals that give a nod to the classic Shuggie Otis/Brothers Johnson song “Strawberry Letter 23.”

We’re not fans of the majority of the people on this song, but it’s a nice little holiday tune for 2010.  We doubt it’ll ever be “Christmas In Hollis” status though.

Released in 2005 with an all-star cast: Tyrese, Andre 3000, Mark Wahlberg and Terrance Howard, Four Brothers bordered the line of ridiculousness and cool. Mark Wahlberg’s performance of a hot-headed rebellious foster son seemed effortless.

Bruce Willis and Mos Def? However these two managed to come together in a film about a lazy cop and framed baker is irrelevant–their chemistry and acting abilities overshadow the randomness. Although Mos Def’s voice was truly annoying and almost unbearable it added to the innocence of his character.

Ractor: Eminem as Rabbit

Eminem didn’t have to dig too deep to get into character as Rabbit, the story was about him. But it’s Eminem’s dedication to the role that gets him a spot on this list.

The Hood classic “Friday” had a budget of $3.5 millions dollars and grossed over $20 million dollars in its first week. Craig and his always high side-kick Smokey had to come up with $200 by the end of the night for Big Worm. All hell broke loose when big-bully ex wrestler Debo’s money was stolen out of his apartment. Craig knocked him the f*ck out just like he did his first major acting role.

Ractor: Will Smith(The Fresh Prince) as Mike

Having grossed over 10 billion dollars in sales for all his blockbusters Will Smith is one of the greatest “raptors” of all time. Will Smith played his bad boy, sexy, cool cop role to a tee!

Cam’ron proves to us over and over that he is smarter then his dumb rhymes. Cam played the perfect Rico. Coming from slinging rocks before rap he really embodied his corrupt character.

Ice-T, going against all his “I hate cop” verses delivered a believable police officer performance. You would of though he would play either Pookie or the drug dealer but he went the other way.

Tupac Shakur attended a performing arts school with Jada Pinkett while growing up so you can expect nothing less than a great performance on the screen. His character in Juice was ruthless and as gutter as it gets, he truly made the transition from rapping into acting look easy!

Jim Jones and Cam’ron take aim at Jay-Z and Kanye West on their latest freestyle over Kanye’s “Runaway” instrumental.

Though Cam recently seemed open to the idea of working with Kanye during a Ustream chat, he’s going hard at Kanye… though the intro to this track makes it seem like Jim and Cam are just joking around

But with lines like this:

And Kanye, you a sucka n***a / Dissed Dame so my attitude is f**k the n***a / suckin Jigga / How you gonna live with that? / Took your beat, now come get it back!”

Kinda hard to take that as just a joke…

There is a brilliant moment in Chris Rock’s “Never Scared” when he concedes that he can’t defend certain elements of rap music.

“It’s hard to defend ‘I got hoes in different area codes’,” he says adding that he should be ashamed of himself for liking Lil Jon’s “Get Low.”

But that isn’t even the best part. It’s when he goes on to say that GIRLS are in the club LOVING the song, singing and dancing “til the sweat drips from my balls!” The nastier the song the better. “Slapemwitdad*ck, slapemwitdad*ck.”

To be clear we’re not talking about  a regular old sex song like LL Cool J’s “Doin It.” We’re talking about those over-the-top “we really don’t like women other than to service us sexually”  type of songs.

How true is this? Very. In fact, there is a list of songs that treat women in the worst ways that get the biggest responses at the club. If the beat is right and there is a chorus they can sing along to it really doesn’t matter how many b*tches and hoes are sprinkled in between. And I’m not just talking about young girls. Some of you out there around my age sang your hearts out to Akinyele’s “Put It In Your Mouth” and probably still did at the 20 year HS reunion.

Does it make it right? That’s another debate for another post but here we present the Top 10 women-hating songs that women seem to love. *Kanye Shrug*

10. Bravehearts “Oochie Wally”

9. Ying Yang Twinz “The Whisper Song”

Walk up to a woman and whisper “Wait’ll you see my d*ck” and see how fast you end up in handcuffs. “Intimate Crunk” is what they called it. However, they even got Free to rap about her boy shorts on the remix.

You can pick from a list of “Love letters” from Cam’ron but this has to be the most popular next to “Wet Wipes.” At least he gives the girls a choice.

While the world went Planters over 50 Cent’s rapid weight loss photos for an up-coming movie roll, we thought about some other celebrities who’ve shaved off a pound…or thirty in the never-ending battle of the bulge.

While Cam’ron’s debut album “Confessions Of Fire” was better known for its rowdy singles like “Pull It,” catchy jingles like “Horse & Carriage” and the demented title track, there was one song that still makes me chuckle every time I hear it.

“Me, My Moms & Jimmy” was not only the rap debut of Jim Jones, this was one of the first times (if not the first time) a rapper appeared on wax rhyming with his mother.

“When he was about 12 years old, he’d be in the elevator and he’d be rappin’, and I’d tell him to stop that mess,” Ms. Giles told me when I interviewed Cam for The Source magazine back in 1999.  “I didn’t condemn rap, but my whole thing was for him to write the English language first. That’s how you get along in life.”

Seems like mom became ok enough with her son’s chosen career to jump on a song for fun. Over a sample of Tom Tom Club’s “Genius Of Love” Cam goes back and forth with his mom who is calling him out for lying about his drug kingpin raps:

“Now, ain’t that the pot callin’ the kettle black I know y’all ain’t gonna come out and front like that/ When ya’ll got knocked, ya’ll was dying in jail/The way you keep on calling, crying for bail”

Cam’s mom also helped him run the two local businesses he had back in Harlem (a liquor store and a laundromat) and looked over his contracts. Unfortunately, she was also the reason that Cam dipped out of the public spotlight a few years ago. After suffering three strokes in one day Ms. Giles was left paralyzed on her left side. Cam moved her to Florida to receive physical rehabilitation and treatment.

“I went down to Ft. Lauderdale for about a year and a half,” he told AOL’s The Boom Box. “Got her walking again, making sure her health was right.”

Now that she’s literally back on her feet will we hear Ms. Giles on Cam’ron’s next project? I hope so. Seeing that he and Jimmy have ended their feud maybe we’ll get a “Me, My Moms And Jimmy” PT 2.

Jim Jones said: “It’s 2010, and this is something I gotta get off my chest…You’ve known us from back when we didn’t have what we have now, so you remember, that above all, me and Cam, we still brothers. And we’re building on getting back on track but first, I apologize for being a rude brother, for saying things publicly without first trying to handle them privately. I apologize for not leading by example because what I didn’t realize at the time, I was venting but it wasn’t all about me. There were other people whose dreams were also part of this movement. So by not leading by example, they were left stranded too. The way I handled our business issues was with emotion, and it got totally f****d up. That’s what selfishness does….”

Rap has been in a downward spiral for sometime. If this was the nineties when I was in love with Hip Hop it would be hard to make a Top 100 list. Still their were tons of dope Hip Hop songs in the 00s. Here’s my Top 10, for today at least.

10. “Ooh” by De La Soul Ft Redman. This song can rock a party and has some of my favorite lyricists of all time.

9. “I’m Black” By Styles P. Dope song about the realities and pride of being an African American. Sucks they didn’t make this a single.

8. “What You Know” by T.I. This song has a dope beat a dope hook and T.I. rides the beat impeccably.

7. “Home” by Kanye West. This is a dope love song for Chicago. It was supposed to be on College Dropout but he used the lyrics later for homecoming on Graduation.

6. “Killa Cam” By Cam’ron. This is Cam at his best, nonsensical gangsta rap nursery rhymes over a dope soulful beat.

5. “Get By Remix” By Talib Queli Ft. Mos Def, Jay Z, Busta Rhymes and Kanye West. The original was dope but he addition of Mos, Jay and Kanye put it over the edge.

4. “Hate It Or Love It” By The Game Ft. 50 Cent. Neither rapper has been as good as they where on this song. Rather than glorifying gangsterism like they do on other songs they actually look inwards for the causes of it.

3. “Heart Of The City” Jay-Z. It’s hard to pick my favorite song off the Blueprint but this one represents the whole album to me. Jay presents his rap veteran status and the hate that comes along with it perfectly over a soulful beat and hook.

2. “Got Yourself” By Nas. I thought Nas was done after “Takeover” but he came back hard and intelligent. This song represents his re-birth.

1. “Wishing” By Ed O G And Masta Ace. I wouldn’t have even heard this song if it wasn’t for the Boondocks. Truly dope song by two of rap’s best veterans with a positive message and a soulful beat.

Visitors to Madison Square Garden’s website have the opportunity to vote for what they feel the true anthem of New York City is. The only options are Frank Sinatra’s timeless “New York, New York”, and Jay-Z’s three-months-old-and-already-overstayed-its-welcome “Empire State of Mind.”

It’s rather interesting that this topic has even been brought up for debate as Jay’s song doesn’t exactly paint the best portrait of the Big Apple: drugs, prostitution, and so forth.

However, if MSG wants to keep the rules a little loose for what the true New York City anthem is, here’s a few more suggestions:
