Charles Hamilton, who is already in jail in Cleveland for an assault charge, was referred to a psychiatric clinic today.  He was referred by the court to determine whether or not he is mentally competent to stand trial for the felony assault charge.

Charles underwent mental health treatment last year for what he claimed was a “broken heart.”

His deposition hearing occurred Thursday, December 16, with bail set at $25,000, but reports are conflicting as to whether he is still in police custody.

This is the latest act of unusual behavior for the one-time signee of Interscope records. Earlier this year he checked himself into a mental hospital and was seen in a wheel chair despite being able to walk.

Up-and-coming rapper Charles Hamilton checked himself into a mental institution last month, but fans of the Sonic-The-Hedgehog loving rapper will be happy to know that he’s back home.

VIBE has received word from a source at Long Beach Medical Center that the Pink Panther was discharged from the hospital’s psych unit last week after staying for just over seven days.

The rapper, who called in to the Tony Touch’s show on Shade 45 last month from the hospital, also spoke with Bossip about his reasons for checking himself in.

“In this hospital I can really be my natural self,” Charles said. “Just like I am in the Industry but everyone is so content with putting up this fake imagery that feel like being yourself ruins your image. Everything I’ve done in this industry, whether it was based on outside speculation, peer pressure, or the outside feeling I was being extorted or the outside feeling I was buggin out, I remained true to me.”

Surprise, surprise: Another rapper is pissed off at his record label! This time, it’s Lupe Fiasco. Though commentary from his former friend/producer Prolyfic and his Twitter beef with Eskay of Nahright are making Lupe look like more of a crybaby than rebel, we’re giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Lupe took to Twitter a couple weeks ago to announce that he’s handed his latest album, Lasers, over to Atlantic Records:

“Lasers is out of my hands guys and gals…it’s done and that’s all I can tell you…when they drop it…they drop it…so drop it…”

The announcement was enough to get a group of Lupe’s fans to start a petition last week asking for Atlantic to release the record. But haven’t we seen this dog and pony act before? Rappers have been battling their record labels for years now. To show you what we mean, we sat down and came up with a list of 10 rappers not named Lupe Fiasco who have gone through similar struggles. Feel their pain.

The Politics: Pusha T and Malice of the Clipse actually started recording their sophomore album, Hell Hath No Fury, in late 2003. But thanks to a merger between their original label Arista Records and Jive Records, a slew of album delays, and a lawsuit which included the duo suing Jive for the right to leave the label, the album didn’t come out until November 2006. Like a fine wine, the project only got better with age (it eventually earned a “XXL” rating from XXL) but the long delay resulted in subpar album sales and Clipse left the label in early 2007.

According to Bossip.com, embattled rapper Charles Hamilton has checked himself into Columbia Presbyterian’s psych ward for “peace of mind.”

“Basically my stay here[NY Presbyterian Mental Hospital] is like identical to my stay in the industry. As far as being the new guy in here having to deal with politics & people trying to control you,” he said in an interview with Bossip. “The critics would have to be the doctors and the rounds [medicine guys]. So you can say this is like an experiment to see if the industry is really like an asylum or if I was the one bugging. Some say the Industry is like High School but it’s just like a [mental hospital].”

There is no question that this music industry can drive you crazy. We wish Charles the best of luck.

It was the punch heard ’round the web. Back in May of 2009 a video hit the internet of rapper Charles Hamilton engaged in an interview with a young lady named Briana Latrice. A rather normal conversation evolved into a freestyle battle that ended with Mr. Hamilton getting his clock rocked for being disrespectful. To Hamilton’s credit he didn’t retaliate and in fact apologized for his indiscretion, but he quite literally became the biggest punchline of 2009.

A year later TheUrbanDaily  asked Charles Hamilton to reflect on the events of that day and see if he had any regrets. You’ll be surprised at his response. Or maybe not.

Hip Hop is like wrestling these days, with a lot of trash talk and beef. Still for the most part Hip Hop is as fake as wrestling but every now and then rappers get so mad at each other that they hit each other. Sometimes during battles, sometimes just randomly. 4. E6 and Kesan were characters on “G’s to Gents,” an MTV reality show. E6 decided to come at Kesan sideways in a freestyle and Kesan decided to sucker punch him in the middle of his rhyme. Kesan has since been accused of molesting his daughter and has a rap video defending himself. Check 1:30 for the punch.

3. This battle between E-N-J and Niks coined the phrase “You Mad Cuz I’m Stlylin On You.” Don’t brag about your gun in a rap battle and if someone is mad that you’re styling on them, you don’t have to remind them. Check for the punch at 0:30. Watch the whole battle here.

2. Lil B gets punched in the face by a preppy kid from Berkeley. Was he mad that Lil B looks like Jesus? Or maybe he was a big Kat Stacks fan. I don’t know but dude was just chillin with him then punched him like 8 times.

1. Charles Hamilton took possibly the hardest punch of all the rappers when he battled a girlfriend of his. He tried to get cute and mention the fact that he had unprotected sex with the girl and that she had an abortion and the girl got mad and punched him in the face. Check for the punch at 2:32

2009 was a really rough year for Charles Hamilton. The Ohio-born Harlem raised MC with a penchant for pink headphones and Sonic The Hedgehog couldn’t seem to keep his foot out of his mouth.

First there was the controversy over a beat produced by St. Louis producer Black Spade, where Hamilton provided Pro Tools “evidence” of creating the beat. Then there was naming the late J. Dilla as the executive producer of an album despite never having met the man. And if having Dilla’s mom say she didn’t know him wasn’t bad enough, he was filmed being punched by his former girlfriend for joking about an abortion in a freestyle. Literally adding insult to injury he was dropped from his label Interscope Records soon after.

Lucky for Charles most people have focused on hating Producer Solar these days and if hip-hop has taught us anything it’s that fans have short memories (just ask Rick Ross.) So what better time than now to come back with new music?

Fast forward to April of 2010 and  Charles has broken a self-imposed exile, performing at New York’s S.OB.s Nightclub, sharing the stage with B.OB. For his six-minute freestyle he chose to rhyme over Jay Electronica’s popular “Exhibit C” instrumental produced by Just Blaze. It was a fairly obvious choice if not original, but the response was decent. Jay was even in the audience that night to catch B.O.B, but according to Charles they haven’t met yet, though he’d like to very much.

You see, Charles has big plans to go with that self-described big mouth and one of them may include starting a 2010 version of dead prez with Mr. Electronica.  And you thought this summer would be boring.

During his set he decided to jump on Jay Electronica’s “Exhibit C” instrumental to drop six minutes of wit, spit and apologies.

“I was in the bing for a while perfecting my flow/ perhaps in a cell/or perhaps in hell/but that doesn’t sell so I rap just as well…”

After taking the L after L earlier this year, rapper and Sonic The Hedgehog enthusiast Charles Hamilton wisely dropped off the face of the earth.  It looks like he’s attempting to salvage what’s left of his “career,” as a new video clip surfaced on the internets this week.

Rick Ross was able to get by with a dopely produced and executed album. Dukie doesn’t seem that lucky.

After the Internet went crazy watching rap’s Sonic The Hedgehog get the rings knocked out of him, the young lady in the video, Briana Latrise, spoke about the incident. The sound gets low in some parts but it’s an interesting listen. Turns out they dated before, her father is Mary J. Blige’s husband and she is an artist in her own right.

“I’m not a fighter, I’m just emotional…I told him when I first met him that if I he didn’t watch his mouth I’d knock him out!”

Looks like rapper Charles Hamilton is jumping from internet domination and entering the world of print.  In a follow up to the Kanye Cover, new artist Charles Hamilton will be donning the next cover of The Fader magazine.  This time Charles dons the cover solo, without any of his fellow classmates.  It’s interesting how these things work out since when Charles first, first got signed many were calling him the Kanye of the east coast.

The article, which comes out next week, inspired the inner journalist in him. He confessed on his blog that he’d love to write for the mag, or any other of music’s prominent publications.

From his blog:

“I would like to write for a magazine. Seriously. Like, the ideal magazine to write for is Fader. They wild cool. I love their working environment. And they don’t just focus on hip-hop. They focus on great alternative bands as well. It would be dope to write for XXL and The Source, but I think it would tarnish my relationship with the publication. If my album warrants 5 mics, I don’t want it to be because I’m Employee of the Month, eg Benzino.

The beauty of double-standards.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if he did start writing for a magazine.  Dude has a lot to say and a strong opinion on just about everything.

Joe Budden vs. Ransom -

Jump-off Joey and his former rhyme partner, Ransom, exchanged some heated barbs through DJVlad.com, WorldStarHipHop and HoodVision to elaborate on who’s gay, who’s the better rapper and who has Zab Judah like skills.

Yung Berg vs The Entire Industry -

Oh, poor youngin’, he just seemed to not be able to catch a break. With Berg raising the ire of Detroit’s Trick Trick, Ne-Yo, Bow Wow, Brisco, and dark-skinned, chocolatey sistas everywhere, it doesn’t look like anyone’s checking for the homie’s next album.

Ice-T vs. Soulja Boy -

In some weird, alternative universe, it’s quite interesting to see “Colors” penman, Ice-T go in on a 17-year-old. Soulja Boy responded hilariously sonnin’ the Law & Order star and Ice-T ran and got his son.

After the Ice-T beef, Cleveland-to-Harlem transplant (and fellow Interscope signee), Charles Hamilton, jumped into the fray with Mr. Tell ‘Em and the jokes were hilarious on both sides. 

50 Cent vs. Young Buck -

Being the black sheep is never fun (ask The Game), but you have to respect the level of ingenuity that Mr. Curtis Jackson has to even have this phone conversation. The rest of G-Unit should be worried about what Fiddy has on them!

Lil Wayne vs. 50 Cent -

Even though the beef never made it to verbal sparring on video (on Weezy’s part), 50 highlighted his issue – or lack thereof – with the game’s best rapper. Meanwhile, Lil Weezyana decided to through a few unveiled barbs at the Queensbridge bully.

Katt Williams vs. Steve Harvey/Rickey Smiley -

Even though Smiley has no words on the situation and Steve Harvey is confused as to why Katt is coming at him, it’s been a weird and wacky year for the man known the world over as Katt Williams. Wack points to Jamie for pushing the issue, though…

In a recent interview with Shade 45 radio, rapper Charles Hamilton had Soulja Boy on his mind.

“Yeah, alright. [Soulja Boy's] a smart kid, he used the online marketing thing, whatever whatever. He had like a billion views on YouTube. Had a bunch of MySpace friends. He’s smart for using the business.” Hamilton continued, “What the fuck does that have to do with him ruining the opportunity of people such as Corey Gunz, Mickey Factz, Kid Cudi to be accepted in the mainstream? I really don’t wanna hear it, honestly. And I’m not trying play Soulja Boy, but chill. It’s because of Soulja Boy that my day-to-day-the way I live, the Sonic the Hedgehog shit that’s dead real to me is considered a joke.”

Soulja Boy, upon seeing the video, responded with one of his own, addressing his Interscope label mate. “I don’t even know why I’m addressing this, nah this is why I’m addressing this, this doesn’t just goes out to Charles Hamilton the Sonic man, not just him, this goes out to all the rappers out there,” he said. “You’ve been grinding so hard, blahzay blahzay, you’re getting into your record label meetings and all you hear is Soulja Boy, Soulja Boy, Soulja Boy. Goddamn. Soulja Boy got 4 million views on YouTube. Soulja Boy just did this, Soulja Boy just did that, and in the back of your head you like ‘fuck Soulja Boy.’”

The young rapper went on – first extending the olive branch then taking it back. “But in the back of my head, it’s like ‘fuck you!’ But, you know what I’m saying, it ain’t ‘fuck you,’ man. I’d rather share some advice [with] you than get on here and say, ‘pussy, you don’t want no beef’…You gonna have to go to the drawing board right. You know get out the magic marker, X out the Sonic and you might just wanna fuck with Mario.”
