Mr. Tyler Perry can’t seem to catch a break these days. First Mario Van Peebles took a sideways shot at him (and other Black men wearing dresses in films) at this year’s Urbanworld Film festival and now author Touré has gone for his pearl necklace-adorned jugular.

Touré debated the merits of Perry’s films with Newsone contributor Dr. Boyce Watkins, who argued that the “Madea” franchise has helped put people to work. Touré countered that drug dealers create jobs too, but that doesn’t make them good jobs. Watch their discussion on CNN below.

Films are being showcased at Katharine Cornell Theatre, 54 Spring Street, Vineyard Haven.

Among features, CNN will debut a documentary entitled Pictures Don’t Lie about the complicated life of famed Civil Rights-era photographer, Ernest Withers. Withers documented the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s through images that evoked the injustices, victories, and personalities that defined the era. Following his death in 2007, documents emerged that revealed Withers was also a paid FBI informant, underscoring a complex life for a man who had, through his work as a photographer, become an icon himself.

Nationally syndicated radio personality Michael Baisden will also debut his new documentary, What Women Want, the latest installment in the never-ending debate on black women and relationships.

New this year, global advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi’s Executive Vice President of Production Sheldon Levy will conduct a workshop entitled “This is How We Do It,” a hands-on exploration of commercial production. Saatchi will also recognize an emerging artist from the festival with the designation of ‘artist in residence,’ inviting the filmmaker to spend three to six months within their production/creative departments.

MVAAFF aims to be a fertile ground for new talent and a door opener for aspiring filmmakers by honoring the best and brightest in African-American film and cinematography.

The network has already shot a pilot for the 7PM slot hosted by Soledad O’Brien, who has been producing diversity themed programming for CNN, notably their Black In America series.  However, the pilot was deemed “unwatchable” by CNN president Jim Walton.  O’Brien is said to be shooting a second pilot.

A CNN representative tells the New York Post, “We shoot pilots regularly and beyond that we don’t comment on speculation.” An insider at the network said, “It has been clearly articulated that they need to consider a host with an ethnic background for a prime-time slot.

In 2008, CNN aired D.L. Hughley Breaks The News, hosted by the famous comedian, but the show was canceled after less than a year.

The 13-year-old investigation into the murder of rapper Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace has gained traction in recent months, as new leads are being pursued in an attempt to finally solve the case.

Sources told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that a new task force of local and federal law enforcement agencies are pursuing leads related to the March 9th, 1997 slaying of Biggie outside of the Petersen Automotive Museum in downtown .

Police claim a lone gunman in a Chevy Impala rolled up next to a Chevy Suburban carrying B.I.G. and members of his entourage.

He was killed on the spot when the unknown gunman sprayed the passenger side with bullets in a scene eerily reminiscent of the slaying of Tupac Shakur six months earlier, on September 7th 1996, on the Strip.

An unfortunate prank turned ugly yesterday when a Kentucky man named C.J. Wiley tweeted  “@CNN: Breaking News: actor Morgan Freeman has passed away in his Burbank home.”

On his Twitter page CJ said he was cutting hair and watching Pulp Fiction when his phone started to ring with reactions to his prank.

When he realized things had gotten out of hand Wiley, who raps under the name CJ-Jizzle,  said it was just an “inside joke between friends.”

CNN wasn’t laughing.

Wiley  later issued an apology to Morgan Freeman, but not to CNN.

“At this time I’d like to issue a formal apology to one of the greatest and most respected actors of our time. It was in no way my intention to spread false rumors or misinformation. What started out as an inside joke between friends somehow gained momentum.”

(AllHipHop News) CNN has issued an apology for playing a profanity laced song by Coolio in the middle of the afternoon yesterday (May 27th).

The network played an uncensored version of Coolio’s “Fantastic Voyage” at the end of a segment about a 103-year-old Coatesville, Pennsylvania woman named Gladys Flamer, who still enjoyed driving her Cadillac.

The Redding News Review reported that anchor/host Kyra Phillips immediately apologized for the embarrassing mistake after a commercial break.

“We aired some music a few minutes ago, and, obviously for those of you that heard it, it was the wrong music that aired,” Phillips said. “We apologize for that. It was a terrible mistake. And we’re working very hard to make up for it.”

Farmer will turn 104 next month.

CNN ran a pilot last night called “Black or White: Kids On Race” where they evaluated both white and black children on how they reacted to a color chart of cartoon kids:

They asked them questions like:

Who is the smarter child?
Who is the mean child?
Who is the ugly child?

Most of the children answered that the darker cartoon children were either mean, ugly and or dumb because of their skin color. CNN hired Professor Margaret Beale Spencer to analyze the results(she also designed he experiment). For the results watch the full episode tonight on CNN at 10pm.

*They tested 133 children from schools that met very specific economic and demographic requirements. In total, eight schools participated: four in the greater New York City area and four in Georgia.*

Some things you just can’t plan. When we sat down to interview Phonte Coleman of Little Brother and The Foreign exchange about the dissolution of his group there was an obvious feeling of sadness.

After eight  years of touring and recording with his partner Big Pooh, Left Back is the last album they will make as a group. As fate would have it Phonte had some time to kill after our interview before he had to meet up with The Roots to record a song for their new album, so we asked him to come along to hear Capone-N-Noreaga’s sequel to their classic The War Report.

In the true spirit of their name Little Brother, Phonte went into immediate fan mode as they ran through track after track, so much so that he requested to take over the interviewing duties. With his own group going through their trials and ultimately deciding to pack it in, he wanted to ask these elder statesman how they managed to stay together  for so long.

So in part one of this exclusive to TheUrbanDaily.com, Phonte asks Capone-N-Noreaga  about how they came to work with Raekwon on this album, what keeps them interested in doing rap after all of these years and how they manage their b.i. verse friendship.

Fox News Channel commentator Glenn Beck said he believes President Barack Obama is a racist and has exposed himself as a person with “a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture,” reports the Associated Press.

Beck made the statement during a guest appearance Tuesday on the “Fox & Friends” morning show during a discussion of Obama’s reaction to the arrest of Harvard University scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. Gates is black and was arrested for disorderly conduct by a white policeman over a misunderstanding about a break-in at Gates’ home.

An Obama spokesman, William Burton, said the White House had no comment on Beck.

Beck’s statement was challenged on the air by Fox host Brian Kilmeade, who noted that most of the people who work for the nation’s first black president are white.

“I’m not saying he doesn’t like white people,” Beck said. “He has a problem. This guy is, I believe, a racist.”

Beck wondered, during the discussion, what other president would immediately jump on the police for their actions in the case. Obama said in a news conference that he believed the police acted stupidly in the case, but later backtracked from the statement and invited Gates and the police officer, Sgt. James Crowley, to the White House for a conciliatory meeting later this week.

Bill Shine, Fox News senior vice president of programming, told the TVNewser Web site that Beck had “expressed a personal opinion which represented his own views, not those of the Fox News Channel. And as with all commentators in the cable news arena, he is given the freedom to express his opinions.”

While the reporter giving the tour is just outside of Michael Jackson’s bedroom, something that looks like a shadow moves in the background. People, convinced it’s the “ghost” of MJ, loaded it up on YouTube and added slow-mos.

Last night at the BET Awards, CNN’s Don Lemon interviewed Joe Jackson about the death of his son. In typical Joe Jackson fashion, the man answered Lemon’s questions with abrupt, detached answers… even going so far as to pass the mic to his spokesperson and attorney and then promoted his record company.

WTF?!

Jackson wasn’t in line with daughter Janet’s feelings and the rest of the world as his answers were strange right off the bat: Lemon asks him how he’s doing and Jackson responds, “great, I’m doing pretty good,” which seems peculiar given the timing of when he lost his son.

“It has been really tough. Remember, we just lost the biggest star in the world,” Jackson concluded. He’s your son, I say…

With the press, understandably, running to Jackson’s parents to hear and share condolences and obtain insight on Michael and his legacy, the person who showed up on the red carpet seemed to be a distant father. No traces of shock or grief, but you can check out the video and see for yourself.

The one thing that’s consistent with all of this though is that his art of promotion definitely seems to be intact.

The New York Post’s Page Six posted an item Monday titled, “Sinking Anchors Anderson Cooper and Roland Martin Hobble CNN,” which blames the network’s post-presidential election ratings dip squarely on the two journalists.

The paper, owned by Fox News Channel owner Rupert Murdoch, said one reason for CNN’s sinking ratings has to do with Campbell Brown, the host of “No Bias, No Bull” who has been on maternity leave for the past month and returns in June.

“In her absence, the show with substitute host Roland Martin has nose-dived,” Page Six reported. “Sources say he has complained the network doesn’t promote him enough or book him high-profile guests.”

“But the biggest disappointment has been the cable channel’s big, silver-haired hope, Anderson Cooper,” the column continued. “The ratings have plunged for his show, ‘Anderson Cooper 360,’ since Obama’s inauguration, and the drop in May has been steeper, especially in the coveted 25-54 demographic, where he’s down nearly 30 percent from the previous month, averaging less than 250,000 demo viewers.”

A rep for Cooper wouldn’t discuss May numbers but said, “Year to date, ‘AC360′ is having its second-best performance ever with an average of 1.161 million overall viewers and 369,000 in the target demographic. It has an impressive 51 percent advantage over MSNBC in total viewers and a 41 percent lead over MSNBC in the 25-54 demographic.”

Comedian D.L. Hughley was pummeled by critics when his weekend talk show debuted on CNN last fall. “What the hell was CNN thinking?” a columnist for AdAge asked after watching the first episode. It remains unclear what was running through the minds of CNN execs when they signed him up for the spectacularly unfunny program featuring painfully awkward interviews. But the network may have come to its senses or at least decided to cut its losses.

A source tells us that CNN has decided to cancel the show due to “budgetary constraints.” We haven’t heard back yet from reps at CNN, although the move wouldn’t be surprising given CNN’s troubles as of late and the fact that HLN (the network you used to know as Headline News) is now “beating its older sibling CNN in the target 25-54 demo,” according to Broadcasting & Cable. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear more.

Queens, New York rap star N.O.R.E. was arrested in Miami Beach, after getting into an altercation with a customer inside of a Fatburger restaurant.

According to Miami Beach police, N.O.R.E., 31, was arrested early Sunday morning (February 22).

The rapper and another unidentified man were reportedly arguing inside of Fatburger, when N.O.R.E. ripped up a bouquet of flowers and threw a cup of liquid at the man.

The Associated Press reports that N.O.R.E (whose name ironically means “Now We On the Run Eatin“)then punched the man in the face and yelled “Do you know who I am?”

Bryan Leach, vice president of RCA Records claims Hip Hop is being dulled of its shine. In this case, he is talking about the shine on rapper’s necks, and attributing Rap’s less gaudy fashion in recent times in part to the recession. In a recent story about the economic meltdown and the slip in Rap record sales, he opened up about the downfall of bling.

“Every major label has been laying people off,” he noted. “This is not about just popping bottles and buying jewelry. Everyone’s got to be responsible and mature.”

A Nielsen report cited by CNN shows Hip Hop/Rap sales declined by nearly 20 percent in 2008, while Rock sales dropped by only 6.5 percent. According to the report, only Classical, Latin and Country music fell by a greater percentage than Rap.

“I don’t see concrete stuff yet, you know, but I imagine you will see more rappers doing some less-gaudy things just because it would be out of step with the audience,” noted author, journalist and BET correspondent, Touré. “The audience is struggling and striving, and then you’re like, ‘Look at my four diamond iced-out chains.’”

And while CNN cited Jeezy’s observation that his son was “addicted to Polo” on “My President” as proof bling was dead, he explained his reasoning for naming the album The Recession while talking to DX last fall.

“The whole recession concept was like, ‘Okay, it’s fucked up out here but we gonna get through it. And here’s some good music to get you through it,’” Jeezy explained. “And everything I’ma give you is gonna be an anthem. I’m not gonna sit here and try to rap you to death. So it wasn’t really like I was gonna sit there and make 18 tracks about the recession. It wouldn’t have made sense.”

Hollywood trade magazine Variety is pointing out the increased presence of CNN anchor Don Lemon, particularly in the wake of the network’s election and inauguration coverage.

In the past weeks, CNN viewers have seen graphics directing viewers to Lemon’s Facebook page (his authorized page, as opposed to the “I Want to Marry Don Lemon” and “Don Lemon Is the Sh**” fan groups). He can also be found at LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter and as a contributor to the network’s “Black in America” blog.

“We think the world of Don,” says Bart Feder, senior VP of current programming for CNN/U.S. “There’s no question that he has a following, and he has a lot of perspective to bring to the table.”

Feder admits that Lemon’s being young, handsome and African-American in the age of Obama is also part of what he brings.

“One of the goals of the network has been to have many different voices and true diversity of thought,” he says. “And adding Don to a panel adds to that, and that’s a good thing.”

During a recent interview with Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg, N.O.R.E. aired out his experiences as an artist on Jay-Z’s Roc-La-Familia and how it eventually left him depressed. According to N.O.R.E., the trouble started when Jay backed out on an agreement to make him president. “This is the only problem that I had: He said, ‘Yo N.O.R.E., I’m gonna make you the president of Roc-La-Familia,’” the Queens bred MC stated. “So here I am, I’m like, that’s big for me. And then next week, he says, “Juan Perez is the president of Roc-La-Familia.” Despite the switch up, N.O.R.E. insists that it is still all good between the two of them. “I am not mad at Jay-Z, I really wanna clear that up,” he said. “Jay-Z’s a wonderful businessman. He’s ill. For me to say he’s a wack businessman, then that makes me wack. Clearly that’s not what I’m saying. But with the Spanish music, he clearly did not know.” Things apparently weren’t all good with Perez, however, because things between yhe two of them soon went down hill. “I don’t think he was a Dame Dash, per say, but I think he didn’t have to be a Dame Dash, he had to be who he was at that time but here’s my problem that came up with that,” N.O.R.E. added. “I tell him one day, ‘Yo O.G., I need a flight to Puerto Rico ’cause I gotta do a record with Daddy Yankee and Don Omar, [and] his exact words to me was ‘F*ck Daddy Yankee and Don Omar.’” N.O.R.E. ended up leaving the label in 2007, but things for him got anything but better, as he battled depression, ballooning to 310 lbs.

“I was depressed from what I did with the Reggaeton and I don’t regret what I did with the Reggaeton, I regret how it went down,” he added. “But I became depressed.”

Jay-Z has a lot on his plate, and Reggaeton is still selling like hot cakes out side of the U.S. The record company business is shady as a whole. We just can’t believe N.O.R.E. pulled the old, depressed and cause of my weight gain, card.

A candidate for the Republican National Committee chairmanship is trying to explain why he included a song titled “Barack the Magic Negro” on a CD that he sent to committee members as a Christmas gift.      

As previously reported, the song, set to the tune of “Puff the Magic Dragon,” was first played on conservative political commentator Rush Limbaugh’s radio show in 2007 and was drawn from a Los Angeles Times column that suggested President-elect Barack Obama appealed to those who feel guilty about the nation’s longtime mistreatment of African-Americans.      

Tennessee Republican Chip Saltsman, who sent the CD to RNC members, said the song was clearly intended as a joke. “I think most people recognize political satire when they see it,” he told CNN. “I think RNC members understand that.“

Saltsman said the song, penned by his longtime friend Paul Shanklin, should be easily recognized as satire directed at the Times.  The CD, first reported by The Hill on Friday, is titled “We Hate the USA” and also includes songs referencing former presidential candidate John Edwards and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, among other targets.      

According to The Hill, other song titles, some of which were in bold font, were: “John Edwards’ Poverty Tour,” “Wright place, wrong pastor,” “Love Client #9,” “Ivory and Ebony” and “The Star Spanglish Banner.”      

Saltsman was national campaign manager for former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s presidential bid in 2007 and 2008. Before that, he held a variety of posts, including a number of positions under former Sen. Bill Frist of Tennessee, reports CNN.

Barack Obama isn’t the first presidential figure to be photographed shirtless, and likely won’t be the last. He is, however, the most physically-toned U.S. leader since JFK to be caught on camera bare-chested.

But inquiring minds want to know how the photographer from Bauer-Griffin – the same California-based agency who caught Halle Berry on a movie set this month at the precise moment of her wardrobe malfunction – was able to get the exclusive shot despite an army of security surrounding the beach resort where the president-elect is vacationing with his family.

Bauer-Griffin co-owner Frank Griffin said his photographer did absolutely nothing wrong.

“He had his equipment searched by the secret service and was restricted to a certain area of the beach,” just like the other photographers, “before the president-elect walked into his view about a hundred yards away,” Griffin told CNN.

“There was tacit approval that he was able to shoot what he could shoot, it’s a public beach,” Griffin told the Washington Post, adding that his snapper was not asked to leave the public beach from where he spotted Obama.

This HBO animated short is hilarious, witty and damn entertaining. Tim – who knows what he does, really – points out the social norms and misnomers that are typically taboo for most to talk about and discuss.
