10. Danity Kane
We got to witness their rise to fame and fall from grace. The saddest
part about the group disbanding is they did so right as they were
hitting their stride. “Damaged” was one of the biggest singles in
2008. If that isn’t enough, Danity Kane is the first female outfit to
have their first two albums debut at number one on the Billboard
charts. Show stoppers for real.

9. Zhane
There aren’t too many things better than being at a party when “Hey
Mr. DJ” blares through the speakers. Jean Norris-Baylor and Renee
Neufville debuted as part of Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit crew. After
the initial success of “Hey Mr. DJ,” the duo dropped moderate hits,
“Groove Thang” and “Sending My Love.” The reasons the disbanded has
never been discussed, but they need to come back. The party is longing
for another anthem, ladies.

8. Total
Kima, Keisha, and Pam had swag for days. Strong vocals and harmonies
over hip hop edged beats was a winning formula for the former Bad Boy
artists. “Can’t You See” is still one of the crown jewels out of the
Sean Combs’ company’s catalog. Their last official appearance
together was in 2001. Total, you got us sitting home waiting for
another album. Ten years is too long.

7. 702
Named after their Las Vegas area code, 702 was a lovely trio with
beauty, talent, and attitude. Under Missy Elliott’s guidance, Meelah,
Misha, and Irish had a string of hits in the late ’90s. After a brief
hiatus and reunion, the girls permanently disbanded in the fall of
last year. The last time anybody heard from them was the failed album,
Star. After that, everyone was asking, “Where these girls at?”

6. Brownstone
You know there’s got to be something special about you when you form a
group and within a year Michael Jackson signs you to his label.
Brownstone was thought to become a major force in the industry during
their mid-1990s run. How can you deny the harmonies and vocal power
shown on the smash hit, “If You Love Me?” Through the member changes
and disappointing follow up album, Brownstone still has a place in the
girl group hall of fame. If only they could get along long enough to
drop new material.

5. Floetry
Repping Philly via London, Floetry was a breath of fresh air to the
R&B world. The Floacist, Natalie Stewart, spit poetic lines as
songstress, Marsha Ambrosius, wowed audiences with her writing ability
and vocal prowess. There’s no way you can have a bedroom playlist and
not include a Floetry joint. Although we like the music both have
released as solo artists, we love the work they did together.

4. Salt-N-Pepa
This group claimed the top of the rap charts from the late eighties
well into the next decade. They were trendsetters.The asymetrical cuts
women are still rocking today is because of these ladies. With hits
like “Push It,” “Whatta Man,” and “I’ll Take Your Man,” confidence was
never an issue. However, the subject matter of their material became
one for Cheryl “Salt” James. She became a Christian and didn’t feel
those lyrics should be coming out of a saved woman’s mouth. James is
the perfect example of every saint once being a sinner. Never mind all
that, can we please get a new album? It’s very necessary.

3. Xscape
Jermaine Dupri’s singing clique was one of the best during their time.
Comprised of sisters, LaTocha and Tamika, Kandi, and Tiny, they had
slow jams galore. “Do You Want To” and “Understanding” being a few out
of the many. The ladies called it quits in 2005 after Kandi was
replaced by Keisha Miles. Internet rumors added to speculation Kandi
left because of a falling out with LaTocha and Tamika. Will they ever
kiss and make up? Hopefully, I need more records like “The Softest
Place On Earth” in my life.

2. Destiny’s Child
Call them what you want, they had star power. Beyonce and her back up
vocalists, Kelly and Michelle, took the world by storm. They became
the best selling female group by selling 50 million albums worldwide.
Bey’s success as a solo artist aside, Kelly and Michelle aren’t doing
too bad themselves. Michelle won rave reviews in the Broadway and West
End productions of Chicago. After several delays, Kelly is getting
some shine with a third album in the works. That’s good and all, but
we need more tracks like “Survivor.” That song exemplifies the intense
chemistry they had. We need more of it.

1. TLC
Sadly, this will never happen. Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes died in a car
accident in Honduras in 2002. But you can’t blame us for wishing.
Before losing the title to our number two spot holders, TLC was the
best selling girl group of all time. The ATL trio held the title for
almost 10 years. nobody has classics like them. “Waterfalls,” “Creep,”
“Aint Too Proud To Beg.” Need I say more? Didn’t think so.

Dawn Richard of Danity Kane talked up her forthcoming projects at MTV’s “Making The Band” Live Finale last night. Aside from collaborating with Diddy‘s new group Dirty Money for Last Train To Paris, Dawn says she would love to collaborate with new school R&B legend Brandy.

“I know I am not worthy yet,” says Dawn of a collaboration with Brandy. “I know I’m not worthy. She is the truth. She’s another one people sleep on. You know dark skin… deep voice. They sleep.”

Although nothing’s written in stone, Dawn furthered her bid for Brandy collabo with this accapella of “Angel In Disguise.”

“Former Bad Boy recording artist, Kain Cioffie, has returned with a new video taking aim at Bad Boy Records founder, businessman and actor/director, Diddy, entitled “Letter To Puff.” In the video the rapper attempts to ‘set the record straight’ regarding his breakup from the label and Diddy’s alleged broken promises to him, which Kain reveals in the story line type song and video.

First known as the “white rapper from Queens” signed on to P. Diddy’s Bad Boy label, Kain first appeared in the all girl pop group Dream’s video of the remix to their single “This Is Me” off their album It Was All a Dream released on Bad Boy Records in 2001. The single, which reportedly sold 2 million copies, landed Kain, at that time, a spot on MTV TRL (Total Request Live) due to girl group Dream landing the #1 spot on their countdown, which was a reported first on TRL for a girl group at that time.

By that time, Kain was well on his way, however the sudden fame was put to halt when Diddy’s distribution deal with Arista Records was lost, who according to Kain, sparked a trail of misfortune, deceit, backstabbing, and broken promises as heard in the lyrics like the following verse taken from Kain’s song ‘Letter To Puff’:

You lost distribution, I was a free agent getting two way pages from three majors/Doug say walk off tonite/I was like nah homeboy/I’m Bad Boy for life!/My loyalty is tough/Alright Puff/I was just a new kid on the block with the right stuff/My downtime wasn’t two years thick/ So I just kept making singles like the US Mint/You told Phiffe? You was bout to make the cash lay/Betting I’d sell 4 million on a Bad day/On the surface I was grateful my man/But if that’s the case why the fuck you Making the band/And almost all of them suck…“

Diddy says the only member of his Making The Band group, Danity Kane, that he will continue to work with is the one, the only… Dawn. As for the other members, they are released from their contracts.

It’s hardly news that Aubrey O’Day — former member of Danity Kane and reigning bad girl of the pop universe — posed for Playboy back in November.

O’Day shot the spread with photographer Markus Klinko, and the issue hits stands this Friday. But so far, O’Day hasn’t spoken in-depth about the shoot, or revealed why she decided to pose for the magazine. Until now, that is.

“You could never imagine how empowering it is to be nude in front of cameras and have people looking at you in that way and seeing you as beautiful,” she told MTV News. “You’re seeing yourself as beautiful. I mean, a lot of the times I think I’m seen as a bad girl, and I think that’s because I’m so open.”

O’Day said that she agreed to the pictorial only after the magazine made Klinko available. He’s snapped portraits of everyone from Mariah Carey to Pamela Anderson, in addition to the cover of Beyoncé’s 2003 album Dangerously In Love, and O’Day knew he’d make her Playboy spread something to remember.

“I only agreed to do it because [Markus] was shooting it,” she said. “He is unbelievably amazing. He agreed with me that we needed to do something classy, iconic and truly beautiful. I mean, I think a lot of the type of way I’m portrayed in the media isn’t always the way I am in my heart. And I think that we were able to capture that with [this shoot].”

“It’s going to be very elegant, very iconic,” she emphasized. “We wanted to do something very beautiful and classic. And I’m very excited about, just in general, how liberating the shoot was and how great it’s going to be to express myself and be comfortable with my sexuality. I think in society we tend to put ourselves in boxes and corners and restrict ourselves, and we constantly feel the need to not say this or not wear this … and taking it all off and being nude is the most natural state that you can be in.”

And what does she think her detractors will say about the Playboy spread? Well, to be honest, she doesn’t really care. Because she’s not listening.

“I’m always gonna be true, whether people like it or not. I’m just gonna be me. I’m gonna be real. I’m not gonna do anything because people want me to. I’m not gonna hide something about me,” she laughed. “I think people are scared to be who they are, and if anybody’s gonna go out there and let everybody know, ‘Be who you are … no judgment here,’ it’s gonna be me.”

Danity Kane has officially been offed, according to Dawn Richards and Bossip:

“When “Making the Band” returns on February 12, fans already know two former members will be missing: Aubrey O’Day and D. Woods, who were dismissed from the group by Diddy last season. But they’ll probably be surprised that Shannon Bex isn’t there either, which apparently means the end of the band. “As of right now, [Danity Kane doesn't exist],” Dawn Richard told MTV News on Wednesday (January 28). “It’s devastating……for me.” “You’ll see me and Drea [Aundrea Fimbres] try and pick up the pieces on our own [on this season's show] — pieces that we didn’t even make,” she continued. “We didn’t even break it and we’re trying to sweep it up ourselves. Puff invited all the girls to come back on this season and they chose not to. Only two of us showed up. That’s fine if that’s the choice.”

Looks like Diddy does it again. Aubrey and D.Woods got a head start on the other ladies.

Former Danity Kane star Aubrey O’Day has reportedly scooped a whopping $500,000 to pose naked for Playboy magazine.

The singer bared all with her reality TV bandmates for an anti-fur ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in October.

And O’Day will once again show off her curves for the cover of the March issue of the men’s magazine, after Playboy boss Hugh Hefner made her an offer she couldn’t refuse.

A source tells the New York Daily News, “Aubrey’s making about $500,000 to drop trou. For that kind of money, she was like ‘Why not?’“

“I still don’t know how I’m going to feed my family,” says Danity Kane member Dawn Richard just moments after MTV’s “Making The Band” live season finale. “Isn’t that awful? Isn’t that just crazy? Like, what just happened? All of this joking and playing aside, this is not funny. This is our lives.”

Dawn, like the countless others who watched the season four finale, found herself questioning the group’s fate after Diddy unexpectantly dismissed group members D. Woods and Aubrey. Unlike previous season endings, there were no splashy performances, Diddy didn’t bother to show up and the sense of family once fostered by the members of the successful quintet appeared fractured.

Despite the apparent disconnect, Dawn feels more ready than ever to get to work. “I would love to continue as Danity Kane, I want to be in this music industry and I never saw this without all five of us in the picture. However, I am beyond all of that now,” says Dawn. “I want to work. And that means I am ready to work when somebody says lets perform. And I’ll perform with whomever is with me. So if no one is gonna get on that train and perform with me as DK then I’m just going to keep going. I would love for everyone to be on the same page, but as you can see, everyone is on a different page… thus, the confusion.”

The new found confidence in Dawn’s voice probably has less to do with this all being some sort of cliff hanging publicity stunt for season five and more to do with the rumblings of her solo CD rumored to be released in February of ’09 while the other members of Danity Kane, “figure it out.”

“There is a lot being said. And what’s funny is I am not even the one that is mentioning it,” says Dawn of the rumors. “I am hearing it from my group members, from Bad Boy, from everywhere. I am flattered and I am honored and if that is the case, then please sign me up.”

Although Dawn is smart enough not to deny or confirm the rumors, she does admit to doing some “project work” with Diddy at Daddy’s House earlier this week for her first quarter solo set.

Interestingly, Dawn may not be able to confirm details of her new CD or whether the new season of “Making The Band” will seek out two new members to replace D. Woods and Aubrey or if Diddy’s new solo project will be next season’s focus, she is sure of one thing and that is the real work is just begun.

New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom was dense with Making the Band loyalists Wednesday night (May 28) as giddy fans anxiously waited for Bad Boy’s reality rookies to kickoff their first collective tour.

Labelmate Cheri Dennis bolted onstage first, opening with her hit single “I Love You” and transitioning into the jumpier “Portrait of Love.” Clad in a skin-tight black dress and a gold belt, she strutted across the stage rousing the audience into dance mode.

Girls clung to each another with excitement as Donnie Klang—the evening’s second act and the only solo artist from Making the Band 4—took the stage in a black leather getup with female backup dancers serving as accessories. Dispelling the “white-boy-that-can’t-dance” stigma from the show, Donnie flitted in synch (pun intended) to the electro-poppy “Dr. Love.” He then wooed a bevy of screaming women during “Take You There,” revealing his Bad Boy boot camp six-pack to the crowd.

The raucous audience chanted before the spotlight panned to Day26 in black suits, shades and Michael Jackson-esque red gloves. With vocals gelling more than ever, the quintet phased in and out of up-tempo tracks like “Exclusive.” Using chairs as props, Day26’s dance routines were reminiscent of old school New Edition. Mario and Cassie danced along to “Got Me Going” while vocal coach Ankh Ra nodded approvingly. Willie, the crowd favorite, nearly incited a riot when he took off his fitted shirt and tossed it in mid-performance.

Diddy then introduced the evening’s headliners—Danity Kane, his “international superstars.” Draped in racy black and white dresses, the girls opened with “Bad Girl,” grooving in a robotic fashion as flashing lights illuminated their routine. The byproduct of choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson’s “Boom boom caks,” the girls hit every dance move to perfection, baiting the audience with sultry vocals. The biggest crowd pleaser was “Damaged,” from their sophomore album, Welcome To The Dollhouse. Diddy twirled and pumped his fists throughout their set, grinning ear to ear.

After presenting both groups with Gold plaques, Diddy said he nearly had tears in his eyes (along with dollar signs) watching the show.

“Bitchassness” aside, the sold-out venue and fanatical crowd proved that the Making The Band camp is more than a bunch of overnight celebrities.
