In the thirty years since the debut of MTV the music video has taken on a life of its own, especially in hip-hop. Thanks to smart phones, tablets and broadband access viewers are no longer tethered to their televisions for a music video fix.

While music sales may be in a flux, music fans have demonstrated a voracious appetite for visuals of their favorite artists. Though there is a definite correlation between which songs get drilled into our heads on the air and what gets watched online, in some cases videos helped buoy songs that otherwise flew beneath the collective radar.

So using a very unscientific mix of video plays and public perception we present the biggest hip-hop videos of 2011. (Play data is from December 24, 2011.)

“Rack City” Tyga
Uploaded: September 8, 2011
Plays: 7,814, 557
For everyone who couldn’t name anyone in Young Money who wasn’t named Lil Wayne, Drake or Nicki Minaj, Tyga has a message for you: “Rack City, bitch!” While this simplistic ode to making it rain sounds like it was ghostwritten by Mr. Collipark and the Ying Yang Twinz, the asstastic clip should finally give the label suits the ammo to push the button on his oft-delayed debut album. There is a rumored clean version with a *cough* plot, but you tell us how many people have watched it when you find it.

“Can’t Get Enough” J. Cole f/ Trey Songz
Uploaded:Sept 16, 2011
Plays: 7, 867, 862
J. Cole is no dummy. When the lyricist from North Carolina prepped his Roc Nation debut he clearly thought “ya’ll ain’t about to Canibus me, no matter how much I like him” and put out this clip for “Can’t Get Enough” which by all accounts is “Big Pimpin” Jr. Warm locale? Check. Pretty girls on a yacht? Check. bouncy, ethnically enhanced soundtrack? Check. Hova taught you well.

“Headlines” Drake
Uploaded: October 21, 2011
Plays: 14,320,393
Three days before his birthday Drizzy and his Nike gloves set the wheels in motion for his sophomore LP, Take Care. The clip was modest by Drake standards with him posing in baseball stadium, elevators and empty lots. But as Hov once eloquently put it, you don’t need a million-dollar video, just a million-dollar artist.

“I’m On One” DJ Khaled f/ Drake, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne
Uploaded: July 11, 2011
Plays: 16,631,953
Let’s be real. With Drake leading off and on the hook this is DJ Khaled’s song in name only. If all I have to do is hold an umbrella and point a finger in the sky for song credit sign me up!

“Dance (Ass) (remix)” Big Sean Feat Nicki Minaj
Uploaded: Nov 1, 2011
Plays: 24,993,181, uploaded
Whatever Big Sean paid Nicki Minaj to do this song and video he needs to double it. Thanks to the cameo of the year by Minaj’s donk, the plays on “Ass” “Marvin And Chardonnay” in a matter of weeks, despite many thinking it was a better song. Don’t believe us? Tell us what Big Sean was wearing…in any scene…it’s ok, we’ll wait.

“Otis” The Throne (Jay-Z and Kanye West)
Uploaded August 11, 2011.
Plays: 31, 323, 152
The first and only video (so far) from Jay-Z and Kanye’s Watch The Throne was a statement clip like no other. You see that Maybach you all have been coveting since 2002? We’re going to strip it down, turn it into a stunt car and do donuts in the parking lot. Couple that with a refreshingly simple performance from Jay and Ye where they both actually SMILED and you have one of the most memorable music videos of the year of any genre. Even Mercedes decided to retire the vehicle after this clip. They literally killed it. Who else can say that?

“Lighters” Eminem and Royce Da 5′ 9″ f/ Bruno Mars
Uploaded: August 22, 20ll
Plays: 32,456,547
Leave it to two of the most demented MCs out of Detroit (and probably North America) to put out such a sentimental, radio-friendly song. Oh, having Bruno Mars on the hook definitely helps get you past the gatekeepers. Now can we get one for “Loud Noises.”?

“Yonkers,” Tyler The Creator
Uploaded: Feb, 10, 2011
Plays: 32,579,353
The man ate a roach. He ate a roach!

“How To Love” Lil Wayne
Uploaded: Aug 24, 2011
Plays: 40, 733, 966
Lil Tunchi became the most unlikely pro-life advocate of 2011 with the video to “How To Love.” The touching narrative of a young lady who decides not to have an abortion and the two different paths her child’s life could take if she was shown “how to love” almost makes you forget that Weezy calls himself the “P*ssy Monsta.”

Wiz Khalifa “On My Level” F/ Too Short
Uploaded: January 27, 2011)
Plays: 48,407,782
The first 8 million people were probably watching to see what warranted the parental advisory warning at the beginning and the other 40 were probably too high from following the song’s instructions to notice that it’s rather tame by rap video standards.

Dr. Dre, “I Need A Doctor”
Uploaded: Feb 24, 2011
Plays: 78,705,918
If Dr. Dre has held off on putting out Detox because of some perceived lack of demand, he need only look at the number of people who have checked in this year to check out his second video from Detox. Mr. Young, whatever is on your hard drive at this point, just put it out. Even if it’s to justify the thrashing of that sweet ride.

“Look At Me Now” Chris Brown feat Bustah Rhymes and Lil Wayne
Uploaded: March 16, 2011
Plays:138, 041, 790
Bustah Rhymes single-handedly revived hip-hop karoake with his show-stealing verse on this song. Catchy as all hell in its own right we’ll attribute at least half of these plays to folks practicing for the Def Jam Rap Star national championships.

“Super Bass” Nicki Minaj
Uploaded: May 5, 2011
Plays: 207,052,146
The Barbies came out in full force to push “Super Bass” to ridiculous heights, and for good reason. The vibrant, colorful visuals perfectly complemented the feel-good ethos and cemented Minaj as a Pop Star. And having her bathe in a pool of Strawberry Quick didn’t hurt either.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: These clips weren’t the most played, but they had big impacts for other reasons…

“Lotus Flower Bomb” Wale f/ Miguel from Ambition album
Uploaded: Nov 14, 2011
Plays: 2, 832, 800 (and counting…)
Easily the biggest song of Wale’s career the success of Ambition is making Rick Ross look like one of the best emerging A&Rs in rap.

2 Chainz, “Spend It”
Uploaded: July 26, 2011
Plays: 1, 774, 763
What a difference a name change can make? Thanks to the popularity of “Spend It” the artist formerly known as Titty Boi has enjoyed a career resurgence unseen since John Travolta did Pulp Fiction.

“ADHD” Kendrick Lamar
Uploaded: August 2011
Plays: 1, 005, 440
Our rookie of the year (all respects to Big Sean) has given us plenty of reasons to look forward to 2012 and this video is just one of them.

“Ghetto Dreams” Nas and Common
Uploaded: August 11, 2011
Plays:1,001,904,

The event that was having these two vets on the same song and in a video was only eclipsed by the spectacle that was Watch The Throne.

, undun Final Cut
This honorable mention makes this list because at 9:19 it is literally the biggest video of 2011. Weaving in several songs from their latest album Undun, fans are treated to the visual narrative of the protagonist Redford Stephens.

I know you all have the same question as me. What beef does Lil’ Wayne have with DJ Khaled?

Maybe it's just us, but this sounds an awful lot like a whole lot of other songs we've heard... especially Khaled's own "I'm So Hood" which ironically featured T-Pain, Rick Ross and Plies.

BET's Hip Hop Awards show is no exception, as no one probably remembers who won the "Best Club Banger" award. However, people do remember the performance highlights.

If you missed the show, check out the performances below!

This past week, Fat Joe sold 11,180 records of his latest album The Dark Side; while Fat Joe may have been crying of embarrassment, 50 was crying of humor.

50 Cent takes pride is demolishing other rappers careers. In 2005, Fat Joe released a “diss” track targeted at 50 Cent on his sixth album All Or Nothing entitled “My Fo Fo” for 50′s shot at him for working with Ja Rule. 50 retaliated with the popular record ‘Piggy Bank:”

His lashings didn’t stop there, at the MTV awards later that year 50 went on stage after Fat Joe and yelled some obscenities that MTV bleeped out. Fat Joe called 50 a “coward” during a DJ Kay Slay interview and from there all hell broke loose.

50 Cent was rushed to the hospital after listening to Fat Joe’s album J.O.S.E 2

50 Cent even disrespected DJ Khaled for jumping on a track with Fat Joe by visiting his mothers job and taping her asleep behind her work desk.

Terror Squad- Lean Back

Fat Joe’s album- The Elephant In The Room only sold 47,125 copies in the first week. We could take the safe route and say that 50 Cent is to blame for such numbers–thing is… before 50 cent even began “attacking” Fat Joe, it’s sad to say but his career was already flailing. Me, Myself and I featudre the only hit single–”Make It Rain.” The album sold 206,000 copies to date!

Here are 5 reasons why I think Fat Joe’s career is a #FAILING:

-He jumps on any trend and rides the wave like he created it!
If skittle candy wrappers taped to you’re fitted was hot, Fat Joe would drop a hot song all about it, buy out the skittle factory and drop em’ on scantily clad woman in a music video with Lil’ Wayne. I don’t think he has one creative bone in his body.

-He’s Spanish.

It’s so terrible to say, but the only Puerto Rican rapper to have a platinum album was Big Pun. Being that he was Fat Joe’s homie, it seemed only evident that he would take over the reigns, but he hasn’t even come close to that success. Fat Joe is of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent and from The Bronx, NY(where sh*t happens) and we’re not saying P.R rappers aren’t hot but they have yet to cross-over into the hip hop world with record sales. (R.I.P Pun)

DISCLAIMER: THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING PUERTO RICAN!

-Fat Joe thinks he hotter than he really is.

Granted Fat Joe had some REALLY popping singles like “Lean Back,” “We Thuggin,” and “Take You Home” but his confidence is way too high when on each of those tracks someone else’s verse was better than his. Remy Ma annihilated him on “Take You Home” and “Lean Back.” Lil Wayne’s hook is what set off “Make It Rain.”

-He’s not that great of a rapper.

Let me clarify, Fat Joe can put together some sentences and phrases that might stimulate your brain but his flow changes with the times and is pretty basic.

-He doesn’t look tough.

He looks fluffy and no one is scared of The Pillsbury Dough Boy.

If you’re still not convinced here’s two last ones for you–he played Remy Ma and he’s disrespectful to women!

The conclusion is: although 50 Cent went hard on Joey, the truth is his career is heading south because of himself! Sorry 50 and sorry Joe!

Seems that everyone is trying to claim credit for 50 Cent’s sales decline…

Now that 50 Cent’s disappointing first week numbers are official, rival Rick Ross is now claiming victory in their 2009 feud.

In a recent concert for DJ Khaled’s birthday, Ross proclaimed full credit for 50 Cent’s lowest debut week (161,000) of his previously multi-platinum career.

“So we celebrating my n***a birthday, but we’re also celebrating the demise of a p***y. R.I.P. to the donkey, we buried him,” Ross stated on stage with Khaled. “It feel good, n***a. Don’t look surprised, you knew we was gonna do it. There’s only one record that can describe the feeling.”

Got to Allhiphop.com to find out what record Ross was talking about.

VIA DX:

The first signee to DJ Khaled’s We The Best imprint (distributed by Def Jam), 21-year-old Miami rapper Ace Hood spoke to HipHopDX last week regarding his sophomore effort, Ruthless (due in stores today, June 30th). The fiery rhymer also explained to DX why he is standing by fellow M-I-A native, and frequent collaborator, Rick Ross and the “Bawse’s” battle with critics of his prior work history. But “Young Gutta” also suggested that he might not be joining forces with Ross to retaliate against Trick Daddy in the two Floridian Rap stars current war of words [click to listen].

With the premiere of his “Champion” video this week, Ace is approaching what may become the biggest success of his short career so far. The follow-up to “Overtime,” the buzz clip for Ruthless featuring T-Pain and Akon, “Champion” is a thumping, emotionally-charged anthem for anyone facing barriers to their professional progress.

“Aww man, she’s phenomenal – the new Lauryn Hill,” gushed Ace of his “Champion” co-star, the scene-stealing Jazmine Sullivan.

Also making a quick cameo on “Champion” [click to listen] is Rick Ross, who Ace slyly shows his support for on the song’s second verse when he spits, “I had a job too nigga, so what? You niggas make me laugh how you hate him so much.”

“I used to work a 12-hour job,” Ace revealed when asked abut the position referenced in “Champion.” “And I … did it for maybe like four months. It was working in like this warehouse joint. I mean, your typical job for guys my age. Like that, work in the warehouse and whatnot, just grindin’ 12 hours a day packaging plastic.”

While freely divulging his work history, Ace is not so quick to reveal any critique of Rick Ross’ refusal to do the same for the several months he stubbornly refused to confirm reports of his controversial pre-rap gig as a correctional officer.

“Ross, at the end of the day he just portraying that he had to do what he had to do in order to provide,” said Ace of the “Bawse’s” story. “So I mean, I understand where he coming from, as far as like he had to grind and do what he had to do in order to put food in his kids’ mouth. Like, that’s what he was portraying. That’s what his whole situation was portraying.”

As Ross continues to deal with detractors incurred with that portrayal, Ace is earning his own skeptics now that he’s dropping his second Def Jam-backed album just seven months after his first, Gutta [click to read], was released. Many Hood haters believe the rookie is only getting this re-up because his guarantor, DJ Khaled, now holds a presidential position at Def Jam.

“Regardless of what Khaled did [with] the whole Def Jam situation, they believe in me as an artist,” said Ace of his recording home. “So I mean to the haters it’s like, keep hatin’. I may go buy another house. I may go buy another car. I may buy another bracelet. [The hate] just inspire me to do more.”

But what about Ruthless makes it worthy of its prominent, major-label release after the relatively disappointing sales of Gutta?

“Regardless of what, I make good music,” replied Ace. “So, that’s enough of a legitimate reason anyway to go and be like, ‘You know what … he had ‘Cash Flow,’ was on ‘Out Here Grindin’,’ had ‘Ride,’ and now he came back with ‘Champion’ [and] has ‘Overtime’ out.’ Like regardless of what, [these are] hit records that I put out on the market. That’s a legitimate reason to be like, ‘You know what, this is why I should go get his album.’ Or, ‘This is why they gave him a second album.’ That is why I got a second album, ‘cause I have hit records.”

Individual song successes aside, the commercial and critical reception to Ace’s first full-length was far from stellar. Reviews of Gutta noted Hood’s penchant for churning out what can at times seem like redundant street-oriented content. Other critiques of Ace’s debut observed that the young spitter is not a Lupe-style lyricist. But Ace does rhyme with an intensity most of his peers don’t deliver their verses with. So what’s more important to him, lyrics or feeling?

“I got both,” Ace replied. “I just don’t portray it in all of my music. But if they ever wanna go toe-to-toe, like we ready any day. I could take it there easy. See that’s the whole thing about being an artist than just being a rapper. I got both. That’s what sets me apart … They wanna take it to lyricism, we can easily take it there, no problem. … And however type of flow they wanna get it, like that’s what we do. … But, I don’t feel like it’s always needed in order to get your point across. You don’t need punch lines in order to always get a point across.”

“They may feel the lyricism up north maybe more,” he continued, “but I mean you gotta think about other parts around the world. Like, they looking for … something they can relate to. Niggas can’t go too off the board with people, ‘cause they wanna be able to understand where you coming from. So at the end of the day, the type of music we make is needed. … It’s motivational music. It’s needed in the streets right now. That’s why I put out records like ‘Overtime’ and ‘Champion.’ You need that hope.”

Khaled is already pushing press for Ross’ new album [click here to read]. How many people are excited his new album Deeper The Album? 50 cent seems to even be a fan [click here to read]. Check out what Nah Right got from Khaled below:

“It’s not the biggest surprise on the world, but DJ Khaled is predicting that Rick Ross’ Deeper Than Rap will be the primo album in the land come tomorrow.

Khaled also spilled the beans that his Miami friend is already working on Deeper Than Rap’s follow-up. “I’m probably not supposed to tell you,” Khaled joked while on the set of Ace Hood’s “Overtime” video. Khaled worked closely with Ross on Deeper Than Rap, serving as the project’s A&R, and hinted that fans can expect more of the same from the Boss’ next opus.

Meanwhile, Khaled will continue to work with a plethora of other Def Jam artists. (He’s the president of Def Jam South and has his own label, We the Best, which Ace is signed to.) Look for Khaled to be sliding beats to acts such as Young Jeezy, Ludacris, Fabolous and new singer Cherlise.”

Last week, Rick Ross confidently said he should sell more records than 50 Cent.

50 Cent responded to Ross’ claims this week saying he will continue to destroy the Miami rapper’s career.

“I thought that was the funniest thing he could come up with,” 50 said, laughing off Ross’ prediction of 12 million records sold for Deeper Than Rap.

“Why is there a Rick Ross and 50 Cent [beef]?” he asked. “It was just bad timing. It was publicity for his part why he jumped out there, but bad timing and no plan. He’s gonna get mauled. People are gonna look at it like, ‘Wow, that was like a Mike Tyson one-minute-and-thirty-second knockout. You didn’t make it past your second week’s sales.’ ”

The G-Unit ringleader insisted that their battle is going to damage Ross’ career.

“When people get more publicity than they usually get — from an artist’s standpoint — and it has nothing to do with their music, what usually happens is you make the public totally aware of you,” the Queens native explained. “Which is good until the release date, and you see no one has bought your record. The public is totally aware you’re trash and your material’s not generating any interest. That’s when you do the damage to yourself, because you don’t want more publicity than your actual music is commanding.”

Fif also had jokes about a Ross vlog where the Boss said he was way more fashionable than the G-Unit.

“He says things like he’s really stylish,” 50 scoffed. “Gucci, they have a European cut that even I can’t get into a lot of times — so I’m sure there isn’t anything in the whole store he can fit in outside of a scarf or maybe a hat.”

“It never gets worse than this,” 50 added. “You get a guy that was a correctional officer come out and base his entire career on writing material from a drug dealer’s perspective. When he loses this [battle], he can’t even go back to his day job because the correctional officers are upset that you wanted to portray that message. He’s gonna work at the pizza shop when I’m done with him.”

DJ Khaled has been appointed president of Def Jam South, according to MTV.

Khaled, known as of late for bringing slews of artists together on his popular posse cuts will officially be taking over Def Jam’s southern division, once led by legendary rapper Scarface.

“This is what I’ve always wanted to do, is be an executive and take it to another level,” said Khaled of the move. “L.A. [Reid] just hit me one day. He was like, ‘We should bring Khaled on board. He makes hits, he has relationships.’ I got a team of producers and we go in hard. My job is to bring hits to the table and work with new artists and work with established artists. I’m bringing new energy to the game and to the building.”

Khaled will oversee such artists’ releases as Ludacris, Young Jeezy and Ace Hood. Rick Ross, who has worked with Khaled on numerous projects, will have the fist album released during Khaled’s tenure – the upcoming Deeper Than Rap.

As for the beef between 50 Cent and Rick Ross, Khaled maintains that he will remain out it – even though 50 brought his mother into the fray. “I don’t deal with negative energy, it’s a waste of my time and my time is valuable,” he said. “I keep negative away and stay positive.”

“At Def Jam, we promote music,” he continued. “We promote hit records. That’s what I respect. I’m always going to represent the music; Rick Ross is gonna represent the music. If controversy comes with it, it comes with it. And boy, ‘Magnificent’ – Rick Ross featuring John Legend, that’s Ricky Ross’ first single – it’s a monster. It’s gonna be on and poppin‘.”

“I don’t deal with negative energy, it’s a waste of my time and my time is valuable,” he said last week in New York of his upbeat nature. “I keep negative away and stay positive.”

Khaled’s name has been in the middle of the ongoing verbal battle between Rick Ross and 50 Cent. 50 accused Khaled of inciting Ross to start the beef, and the back-and-forth escalated last week when Fif made a video called “A Psychic Told Me.” In it, 50 threatened Khaled’s mother; the video has since been removed from 50′s Web site.

Khaled declined to address the situation, saying that he wants to focus on music.

“At Def Jam, we promote music,” he added. “We promote hit records. That’s what I respect. I’m always going to represent the music; Rick Ross is gonna represent the music. If controversy comes with it, it comes with it. And boy, ‘Magnificent’ — Rick Ross featuring John Legend, that’s Ricky Ross’ first single — it’s a monster. It’s gonna be on and poppin’.”

Khaled is working more closely with his friend Ross than ever before. He served as the A&R rep for Ross’ forthcoming LP Deeper Than Rap, and in his new role as label president, he’ll be overseeing the album’s release as well. Also under his watch will be albums from Young Jeezy, Ludacris and his signee Ace Hood. (Ace is also signed to Khaled’s Def Jam-distributed imprint, We the Best Records.)

“This is what I’ve always wanted to do, is be an executive and take it to another level,” Khaled said. “L.A. [Reid] just hit me one day. He was like, ‘We should bring Khaled onboard. He makes hits, he has relationships.’ I got a team of producers and we go in hard. My job is to bring hits to the table and work with new artists and work with established artists. I’m bringing new energy to the game and to the building.”

Of course, Khaled garnered headlines of another kind last week, when a man who resembled Khaled led police on a chase in Los Angeles before taking his own life. Khaled said his phone was ringing all night.

“It wasn’t me, but you gotta give thanks for life,” he smiled.

AllHipHop.com’s illseed is a person in tune to not only hip-hop, but what goes on within the culture. He most recently received an email in regards to DJ Khaled’s mother and it really shows how this beef can become “deeper than rap.”

Check out the email below:

“Hi illseed,

I would like to comment on the whole 50 and at Khaled’s mom thing. I know his mother very well and speak with her on a regular basis. I’m not one to frequent your site, but a friend of mine told me about the video he had seen.

I spoke with Khaled’s mom (almost everyone refers to her as “mama”) just this evening and thought it would be best if I brought this up since it was getting so much attention. Mama is very distraught over this situation. She is worried to the point where she can’t even feel safe. Her privacy was violated and the whole situation was very intrusive.

The day that video was shot Mama was very sick. She had been resting when those BOYS came in to question her. They asked her if she was Khaled’s mom and she answered them, asking them to leave her alone. She had no idea they were recording her.

Mama is the sweetest women you will ever come across, she genuinely cares for people. What is going on is WRONG. No one should bring anyone’s family into the situation. Both of these men should grow up. It was entertaining in the beginning, but now it has gotten to a level that is all too personal. Both sides are at fault and both sides need to GROW UP and handle the matter maturely. I understand that this is how the “industry” works, but to get to the point where an older woman feels threatened in her own business or home for the matter, is outrageous.

Mama also heard the “poem” 50 wrote, and feels threatened by it. I noticed that many people visit your site and leave there input. I would greatly appreciate it if you would help the matter. I don’t know if you really can, but I think you might be able to at least influence the rest of your audience to see that this is getting a bit out of hand. When the matter does not address a person directly they don’t feel how great of an impact it makes.

To see how hurt Mama is by this situation hurts everyone around her. I hope that you can at least shed some light to everyone else on how much this is influencing and hurting the lives of everyone involved. This matter really needs to be resolved before it escalates ever more.”

Personally, this is beyond belief. Less compassion or not, something's gotta give before this thing gets out of hand.

This headline made waves in the midst of all the Chris Brown/Rihanna hoopla. In the early part of this morning, a three-hour slow-speed chase ensued around the streets of Los Angeles ensued, the type of chase that takes over local TV stations and causes people to try and make themselves microfamous via the power of Internet jokes. As the LAPD tailed a white Bentley around southern LA, paparazzi-fueled rumors that the driver may have been a “troubled” celebrity spread around the Internet’s gossip channels, and somehow that celebrity became master of the cameo-studded single DJ Khaled—even though he was some 2,350 miles away at the time. Khaled took to his MySpace blog to dispel any rumors.
