Dolla’s Mom Speaks, Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty For Murder

The family of slain rapper Dolla will celebrate his 22nd birthday today (November 25th) with the release of a brand new mixtape titled The Miseducation of Dolla.

Dollar, born Roderick Anthony Burton II, was gunned down in front of the Beverly Center on May 18th 2009.

Just hours after the shooting, police arrested Aubrey Louis Berry, 23, as he attempted to flee California via a flight from Los Angeles Airport, back to his hometown of Atlanta.

“Just a few hours before the incident, I spoke to my son and he was on his way home catching a flight out. I stay close to the airport, so he used to stop by,” Dolla’s mother Dawnee Robinson exclusively told AllHipHop.com. “He told me what he wanted for dinner. He wanted some yellow rice, cabbage and chicken wings. So I went to the store and made sure I had everything. So when I got the call, I was cooking his dinner.”

Akon Speaks Out Against Gun Violence

On Thursday, Akon visited Poughkeepsie, New York to speak to high school students about gun violence. Just a week and a half prior to his appearance, his protégé, Dolla, fell victim to gun violence. The 21-year old up and coming rapper was shot and killed in a Los Angeles mall on May 18.

“He was a good kid,” Akon said, calling the tragic incident “a very senseless crime.”

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, Akon appeared in front of roughly 50 Poughkeepsie High School students as part of Mayor John Tkazyik’s effort to reduce the use of guns among the youth. His appearance also went toward community service hours he was ordered to carry out due to an ’07 incident in which he threw a fan offstage at a KFEST concert.

In 1998, Akon was convicted for felony handgun possession. “At the time I thought I was doing it for protection,” he said. “Imagine if I had used it. I probably wouldn’t be here talking to you. There’s no turning back from that. That one little moment affects everybody.”

Students, who took pictures with Akon after the event, reacted positively to the singer’s message. “I thought he was inspirational,” junior Kadeem Davis said. “He seemed sincere and remorseful about his past.”

Poughkeepsie has experienced its fair share of gun violence with 23 shootings last year and 15 already this year. In the next few days, Akon will speak out against gun violence on local radio stations.

“It just feels great that you can make a mistake and be forgiven for it,” Akon said. “I just encourage [the youth] to do the right thing at the end of the day.”

Murdered Rapper Dolla’s Family Releases Statement

Dolla’s family released this statement to the media about the rapper’s death:

“First and foremost we, the Burton family would like to thank everyone for all their kind thoughts and prayers during these trying times.

Most recently, the Burton family was made aware that there have been numerous false claims of information floating around the net and also reported in reputable media outlets. Part of this was due to someone who was not authorized to speak on the family’s behalf and who claimed to be the publicist of record decided to disseminate false information on her own and without the consent of the family to several media outlets.

Due to the circumstances of the situation no other information will be released at this time. We are grateful for your continued support in these trying times. We now ask everyone to allow us to mourn the loss of our beloved Roderick Anthony Burton II.”

The murderer of rapper Dolla has admitted that he shot the gun that killed the artist, but said that the act was done in self-defense, according to his lawyer.

Howard R. Price, lawyer for 23-year-old Aubrey Louis Berry, said that he had a previous altercation with Dolla that lead to a fatal confrontation.

Price alleged, through his lawyer, that he was scared for his life when he killed Dolla and shot at two other people.

Price has since been charged with murder and a pair of assault charges related to the Monday shooting. Additionally, his bail has been raised to $5 million. Berry is slated to enter a plea on Friday, a postponement from Wednesday.

BREAKING: Rapper Dolla Shot and Killed In L.A.

The man killed during a high-profile shooting at the Beverley Center in Beverley Hills, California today was Atlanta rapper Dolla, sources have confirmed with AllHipHop.com.

Dolla, born Roderick Anthony Burton II, hailed from East Atlanta and Los Angeles. He was signed to Akon’s Konvict Muzik imprint.

The rapper was shot and killed shortly after 3:00 PM near the La Cienga Boulevard entrance, after a fight between a group of individuals broke out.

Witnesses report that a woman was seen firing a handgun. Another source said a male suspect was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport as he attempted to board a flight.

Dolla was originally a member of Hip-Hop group Da Razkals Cru, before he landed a gig for Sean “Diddy” Combs as a model for Sean John.

Dolla had gained a buzz via his track “Who The Heck Is That?” which featured T-Pain and Tay Dizm.

The rapper was reportedly working on his debut solo album titled a Dolla & A Dream.
