I saw it when it debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and I enjoyed it. It’s well acted and produced with enough laughs, twists and thrills (including murder, blackmail, drug trafficking, police corruption, and more) to keep the audience entertained.

Internationally respected actor Don Cheadle has taken on a new humanitarian role as an environmentalist. He was appointed last Saturday in Kingali, Rwanda, as the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program during a ceremony to mark the World Environment Day (WED).

Cheadle’s appointment was announced in Volcanoes National Park during the WED festivities. The actor, who has played a quite range of distinguished and memorable roles, took part in the traditional Kwita Izina gorilla-naming ceremony. Rwanda or the Land of a Thousand Hills holds a special place in Cheadle’s heart. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his powerful lead portrayal in the 2004 heart-wrenching docudrama “Hotel Rwanda.”

Check out the trailer for Brooklyn’s Finest, the new movie by Antoine Fuqua, director of Training Day.  The film stars Don Cheadle, Richard Gere, Wesley Snipes, and Ethan Hawke.  Cheadle, Gere, and Hawke star as three Brooklyn police officers who face difficult decisions on and off the job.

Looks like it might be just as good as Training Day!

One of the filmmakers you might not expect to see at the Sundance Film Festival is Antoine Fuqua, who cut his teeth on studio movies over the last ten years, the most memorable one being Training Day, a tough L.A. police story which earned Denzel Washington an Oscar and Ethan Hawke his own nomination.

Fuqua brought his new police drama Brooklyn’s Finest, made outside of the studio system, to this year’s festival looking for distribution and reactions from Sundance’s legendary movie-loving audiences.

Besides moving to the East Coast, this is a very different movie in that it explores the day-to-day lives of three police officers in different stages of their careers, pulling varying duties in the war against drugs and crime in Brooklyn. Richard Gere plays Eddie, a 20-year vet who is just a week away from retirement, who turns to alcohol and a prostitute named Chantel, to get him through what has been an unfulfilling career as a police officer. Don Cheadle is Tango, who has been working undercover in the thick of drugdealers and killers, trying to maintain that cover while desperately wanting to get away from all the death and violence. Brooklyn’s Finest also reunites Fuqua with Ethan Hawke, who plays Sal, a narcotics officer trying to make ends meet to support his family, who gets into a lot of bad situations as he tries to get what he thinks he deserves.

Made outside the studio system, Brooklyn’s Finest may be Fuqua’s finest efforts as a filmmaker, filled with stirring realism and authenticity about what real police officers go through every day without resorting to the sensationalism and Hollywood endings we’ve become so accustomed to.

NBC announced Thursday that Oscar-nominated actor Don Cheadle has signed a two-year production deal with parent company Universal Media Studios.

Under the pact, revealed during NBC’s portion of the winter Television Critics Assn. press tour, Cheadle’s Crescendo Prods. will develop series projects for the studio.

Founded in 2005, Crescendo recently signed a two-year feature deal with Overture Films. It has produced such films as Traitor and the documentary Darfur Now and is developing a biopic of musician Miles Davis.

Cheadle was a producer of the Oscar-winning movie Crash and is serving as an executive producer of the Starz/Lionsgate series of the same name, which is based on the film.

On the big screen, Cheadle opens today in Hotel for Dogs.

Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and Sam Rockwell (Frost/Nixon) are in talks to star as the villains in Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 2, being directed by Jon Favreau from a script by Justin Theroux, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

THR says that Rourke would play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils. Variety adds that Rourke would play the Crimson Dynamo. “He’s considered to be an evil version of Iron Man because he battles the superhero in a nuclear-powered suit of armor,” says the trade.

Rockwell would play Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, being played by a returning Robert Downey Jr.

Rourke and Rockwell would be joining a cast that also includes the returning Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, who is replacing Terrence Howard.

Another part — one for Stark’s assistant Natasha — is still open.

The project is eyeing a spring start in Manhattan Beach. Paramount will release the movie May 7, 2010.

There’s a rumour (from latinoreview) that Tim Robbins might be set to play Howard Stark (dad of Tony) in a flashback sequence in Iron Man 2.

They report that the scene “is going to set up The Avengers and Captain America films”, and that director Jon Favreau cast a well-respected actor as Howard because it was such an important scene.

They also reckon that bow-and-arrow-wielding hero Hawkeye, plus the evil Soviet spy Black Widow who he falls in love with – are also set to appear in the film.

There was at least one good thing to come out of the high profile dismissal of actor Terrence Howard from the sequel to last year’s blockbuster hit Iron Man — the news that Don Cheadle would be taking over the part of Col. James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes. The Oscar winning actor’s resume boast an impressive variety of roles, from serious dramas like Crash, Hotel Rwanda and Traffic to more lighthearted fare like Ocean’s Eleven and its two sequels. And while we were disappointed to hear that Howard would not return for Iron Man 2, we think Cheadle could do a lot with the role of Tony Stark’s confidant and the man destined to wear the War Machine armor.

Cheadle recently spoke with IGN about taking over the role, how he felt about replacing his friend and what we might expect from the character in the next film.

IGN: How did you get involved with Iron Man 2?

Cheadle: I got a phone call from my agent saying they were offering me the part. That was kind of it. It happened very fast, and I had a very short time to answer. Literally, overnight. I was unaware of what was happening with Terrence. And when they called me I asked what was going on with Terrence. I’ve worked with Terrence, I’ve known Terrence for a long time. And they said they were moving away from him. So it’s not like I was taking Terrence’s job, because the job was already gone. Someone else was going to do the part. I don’t know who the next person in line was, but that’s who they were going to. And I literally had a few hours to accept the job or not.

IGN: How much can you reveal about the story?

Cheadle: I can’t reveal anything because I’ve seen nothing. I have no idea. There’s no script yet. All I know is as much as you know, that Rhodey looked at that suit and said, ‘Next time.’ So I imagine I’m going to be in a suit.

The shingle, also headed by Cheadle’s partners Lenore Zerman and Kay Liberman, will remain in offices outside Overture’s Beverly Hills headquarters, but will work closely with Overture CEO Chris McGurk and chief operating officer Danny Rosett.

Cheadle’s connections to McGurk and Rosett also pre-date the first-look deal, as his film Hotel Rwanda was co-distributed by MGM while the pair headed the studio

Several unsolved murders occur during an Oktoberfest celebration and the Winchester Brothers find out that the killer is a shape-shifting demon who’s taken on the forms of iconic movie monsters. Will the duo be victorious? Tune in at 9:00pm to find out.

I have yet to see this movie about the life and times of celebrated Civil Rights radio DJ – Petey Greene, but I will tonight. The ex-con’s biography plays out on the small screen and is portrayed by GIANT Magazine cover-boy, Don Cheadle. To see where we’re going, sit down at 10:00pm to HBO and see where we’ve come from.

Family Guy, Adult Swim, 11:00pm -

Meg gets into extracurricular activities as a flag girl for her high school. Now, “almost” a cheerleader, Meg has to deal with her pesky family – mainly Peter – and his Chris-envy issues. Pop culture references, funny gags and just all-around better than “Simpsons” humor is what you’ll have to look forward to on Adult Swim!

Don Cheadle’s wide array of characters have given us a very in-depth look at the man in front of Hollywood’s wide-eyed lens. From subtly silly roles (Ocean’s 11) to being humbly heroic (Hotel Rwanda), Cheadle musters up his talent once more for the international action thriller Traitor.

Cheadle plays Samir Horn, a traumatized Muslim youth who witnesses his father killed by a bomb. In turn, Horn grows up to become a special operations officer for the United States. Even though such an event was ages ago, he can not relinquish his past and falls in line with the Muhajadeen Muslim faith in Afghanistan.

We stumble upon Horn giving “advice” about explosives to local Islamicists in Yemen. The government tags and bags Horn and his collective, throwing them into a prison that would makethe innmates of Oz shudder. There he comes face-to-face with the FBI. The problem already starts early, though. With Traitor seemingly so loyal to the political thrillers of old, this Syriana-like experience leaves the viewer confused. Where does all of what Samir Horn experienced leave him emotionally and politically? Does his allegiance lie within the Middle East or to the good ole’ U-S-of-A?

He escapes prison with the help of his new “brothers” and so the adventure begins. Director Jeffrey Nachmanoff, best known for co-writing The Day After Tomorrow, is capable of getting all of the excitement for the destinations covered in the flick — Chicago, Washington, D.C., Toronta and Nova Scotia. But into the movie, you’re really trying to realize what’s going on. Although it shouldn’t be hard with allusions from Horn like, “I don’t feel at home anywhere,” and comments like, “He’s caught between traditional Islam and the West,” adding a twist to a unpredictable plot.

The key to Traitor is its moral gradations. The terrorists aren’t Qu’ran-quoting, frothing-at-the-mouth maniacs, they are believers in their cause. As Horn, Cheadle pulls off the impressive task of blending his unique sense of charisma and emotional blankness necessary that comes with being on both sides of the fence. The scene between Cheadle and Said Taghmaoui are electric and engaging in every scene. While audiences may get muddled down by the dialouge, the underlying focus is not on varying philosophies, it’s about the action and suspense.

With keeping the film lean in runtime and plot, you’d be hardpress not to check out this latest from GIANT Magazine’s latest cover model. Traitor is currently in theaters now.
