Last night at the BET Awards, CNN’s Don Lemon interviewed Joe Jackson about the death of his son. In typical Joe Jackson fashion, the man answered Lemon’s questions with abrupt, detached answers… even going so far as to pass the mic to his spokesperson and attorney and then promoted his record company.

WTF?!

Jackson wasn’t in line with daughter Janet’s feelings and the rest of the world as his answers were strange right off the bat: Lemon asks him how he’s doing and Jackson responds, “great, I’m doing pretty good,” which seems peculiar given the timing of when he lost his son.

“It has been really tough. Remember, we just lost the biggest star in the world,” Jackson concluded. He’s your son, I say…

With the press, understandably, running to Jackson’s parents to hear and share condolences and obtain insight on Michael and his legacy, the person who showed up on the red carpet seemed to be a distant father. No traces of shock or grief, but you can check out the video and see for yourself.

The one thing that’s consistent with all of this though is that his art of promotion definitely seems to be intact.

Yours truly is a Cleveland Browns fan, so my focus is on what’s going on in the NBA, right now. But with another sagging halftime performance, the attention was placed on the Super Bowl ads.

5. Conan O’Brian Ad -

Conan showed why Leno still remains the NBC king of late night with this hodgepodge of corniness. Budweiser may have shelled out some bucks to get Mr. “Not My Thing” on camera, but this one failed to start some chatter.

4. McGruber SNL Pepsi Commercial -

While SNL may have some winning sketches during the 2008 Presidential elections, this Super Bowl dud played upon the 80′s classic television show MacGuyver and ran the joke into the ground. Boo.

3. NBC “Feelin’ Alright” Ad -

Hopefully NBC is “alright” with betting the farm on Heroes newest season making up for last one’s clusterfluck. But applying Joe Cocker’s groovy tunes somehow doesn’t help to tone down the campy-ness of seeing Parkman (Greg Gunberg) and Noah Bennett (Jack Coleman) do a duet.

2. Budweiser Horse Commercial -

This would’ve been funny, charming and all that… only if they hadn’t tried the same concept last year.

1. H&R Block ‘Death’ Commercial -

Right now, people ain’t playing around with money and/or death. So, this was just a bad commentary on the state of the economy. Even Don Lemon knows that this ain’t something to make light of.

Hollywood trade magazine Variety is pointing out the increased presence of CNN anchor Don Lemon, particularly in the wake of the network’s election and inauguration coverage.

In the past weeks, CNN viewers have seen graphics directing viewers to Lemon’s Facebook page (his authorized page, as opposed to the “I Want to Marry Don Lemon” and “Don Lemon Is the Sh**” fan groups). He can also be found at LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter and as a contributor to the network’s “Black in America” blog.

“We think the world of Don,” says Bart Feder, senior VP of current programming for CNN/U.S. “There’s no question that he has a following, and he has a lot of perspective to bring to the table.”

Feder admits that Lemon’s being young, handsome and African-American in the age of Obama is also part of what he brings.

“One of the goals of the network has been to have many different voices and true diversity of thought,” he says. “And adding Don to a panel adds to that, and that’s a good thing.”
