GQ: You were a rapper at one point, too. Was there a time when being an MC seemed more likely for you than being a singer?
Erykah Badu: That was back when I was in college. I went to [Grambling State] university from 1989 to ’93 to study theater, so I was an actor at that point. It wasn’t my aspiration to be a singer, it was to be an artist. When I was 23 or 24, I was rapping and emceeing a lot with Free, but I was also working at Steve Harvey’s comedy house. He was my boss—the best boss ever. Funny, generous, considerate, and he knew I was an artist. When I started working there I was a waitress, and somehow I became a hostess. When he knew he could trust me, he moved me to the ticket booth. I handled money and helped organize transportation and hotel reservations for the comedians that came in. I noticed Steve didn’t have a stage manager, so I got that job, making sure everybody was taken care of. I love being of service to people—the whole act of it is really great to me. One day Steve was late going onstage, so I went out to the mic and threw out some jokes and stuff. People were laughing and heckling and having fun and Steve came onstage and scolded me in front of everybody. It was so funny. We started doing it every night. [Laughs] It felt like, This is where I want to be. Steve was really inspirational in that.

In Chapter 8 entitled “Dooin It” Common discusses how “conscious” women would approach him for sex just like any other woman, just using different tactics.

“Because I had a reputation as a thoughtful artist, I’d get girls approaching me on a conscious tip. “Brother, what do you think about this?” That was their hustle. Women can be just as raw as men. They’ll go for theirs. They’d want to talk about spirituality and politics and literature. We’d talk, but they’d still end up with their legs over their head.”

Well damn! Common goes on to break down his ideal woman writing that “I still want a woman who is spiritually wise, culturally smart, academically adept, and  naturally streetwise.”

MR: You’re in a certain Dave Chappelle’s Block Party flick. That must have been fun.

JS: That was not fun for me. It was a great experience, however it wasn’t fun. The only reason I say that is I typically work a certain kind of way. There were so many people and so much energy that it was hard for me to find a space to just be for a moment, straight from a crowd of people to the stage, which is not normally what I do. I remember being thoroughly exhausted when that was over, but very proud of the outcome. I still watch it now and then and I think, “Wow, what a great experience.”

10. Ashanti – The Way That I Love You
For her comeback single, Ashanti made fellas think twice about cheating. In the clip, she realizes she’s not the only one and has
visions of killing her beau. Many believed art was imitating life because rumors swirled about her real life boyfriend, Nelly, constantly
stepping out on her. If those allegations are true, he got the hint and appeared in her next video as the loving and trust worthy partner.

9. Christina Aguilera ft. Redman – Dirrty
Christina Aguilera debuted as the pop princess with a huge voice and wholesome image. Not happy with being the good girl, Christina threw on some as**less chaps and a bikini shocked the world with this video. The public’s main gripe was the message she was sending to young girls. They felt Aguilera was entirely too talented to reduce herself to booty popping and salacious lyrics. Christina responded by saying, “This is me. No glass and no pretense.” Whatever you say, Christina.

8. Britney Spears – Baby One More Time
By 1998, pop music was at a standstill. Nothing interesting was happening until a fifteen year old Britney debuted her music video
with her dressed as a Catholic school girl dressing and dancing provocatively. Many parents condemned the record company for selling
sex with such a blatant disregard for the messages being sent to their young audience. The only issue was the young Spears came up with the concept herself, knowing it would get her the attention needed to become a world class pop star. She was right. So what does that say about us, the people who ate it up?

7. Ciara – Ride
The clip from Ciara’s first single from her latest disc stirred up the drama for many reasons. First, the racy lyrics already caused some
women to shy away from the song. However, men were drawn in by the overtly sexual depictions of Ciara. Riding a mechanical bull in a wet t-shirt and hot pants and wearing a itty bitty swimsuit and a fur coat had the guys drooling.  My mom saw the video and responded, “All she’s missing is a pole!” BET deemed the video so explicit, it was banned from the network and became an internet sensation.

6. Fiona Apple – Criminal
In 1997, Fiona Apple slithered onto our radar with her hit, “Criminal.” The then barely legal singer’s video featured the
aftermath of a wild party. Apple is seen in various states of undress. The heroin chic look thought up by director, Mark Romanek, was criticized relentlessly. The heat became so much for Fiona, she denounced her own video in an acceptance speech at the MTV VMAs the following year. Criminal, indeed.

5. Lady Gaga and Beyonce – Telephone
Illuminati conspiracy theories aside, “Telephone” was one of the most talked about videos in recent history because some didn’t understand it. Others thought it was too sexy for television. The rest of us just enjoyed watching Beyonce. Showcasing lesbian acts, murder, and nudity, Lady Gaga and Beyonce do their take on Thelma & Louise. While many were distraught over the themes, there was a poignant moment. The conversation about trust is absolutely true.

4. Madonna – Justify My Love
If controversy was a man, Madonna would be its wife. Never has anyone conjured more scrutiny for images in music videos than The Material Girl.  For this 1992 clip, Madonna bucked at conservatives with images of homosexuality, bondage, and voyuerism. Once MTV banned the video for its sexual nature, Madonna capitalized on the media storm by releasing it on VHS in conjunction with her book aptly titled, SEX. Lenny Kravitz, who wrote the song, is still making money off that.

3. Erykah Badu – Window Seat
Erykah Badu has always been the artist to push boundaries in the R&B genre. Her videos are thought provoking pieces of art. This is
especially true for “Window Seat.” A video depicting Badu strolling the same path in downtown Dallas as JFK rode the day he was killed, while stripping her clothes off. The reactions in the clip are real. Erykah was fined for her body baring stunt. In case you didn’t know, the concept is Erykah is taking off the layers of learned behavior until she is free enough to think critically on her own. When she is finally able to do so, she’s killed because society doesn’t want us to think differently than the majority. That backside wasn’t bad to look at either.

2. Madonna – Like A Prayer

Burning crosses, making love to saints, and a Black man playing said saint. Oh my! The Pepsi generation wasn’t ready for Madonna’s ideas. She lost her Pepsi endorsement after the video aired. Back in the 1980s, it was still very taboo for interracial couples to be shown on television. Blacks were never portrayed as biblical icons in that time. As forward thinking as this video is, I’m throwing some shade
for the burning crosses. Every time I see a burning cross, I think the KKK is about to do me like Emmett Till. What were you trying to say to the Black community, Madge? Inquiring minds still want to know.

1. M.I.A. – Born Free
M.I.A. has been pushing buttons with her artistry since bursting on the scene in the early 2000s. In the clip for “Born Free,” she holds a mirror up to America to show them how stupid we look as we randomly attack people for being Muslims. Only in her video, soldiers were attacking all redheads. Soldiers were seen kicking in random apartment doors just to see if the residents were redheads. If they weren’t they just left. If they were, they would be put in in prison and tortured. It’s a no brainer why American music fans hated this video. Who wants to be shown how much of a jackass they’ve been?

Perhaps because we’re not in tune with our inner Gods and Earths, we aren’t exactly sure what the meaning of this video is.  It doesn’t matter though as the video is oddly captivating, no doubt in part to the song, which is one of the highlights from Badu’s latest album, New Amerykah Part II (Return Of The Ankh).

It’s kinda difficult trying to remember every album that came out this year that I listened to, and which ones are worthy of ending up on a year end list.  However, in 2010, this list was surprisingly easy to make. Was it because I didn’t listen to as much music this year, or did these albums just do such a good job of satisfying my musical needs?

10. H.I.S.D. “The Weakend”

The Houston, TX hip-hop quartet, Hueston Independent Spit District (H.I.S.D. for short) released their second full length album in 2010. The Weakend was quite the breath of fresh air in a year filled with stale and predictable hip-hop albums.  While it definitely has a throwback sensibility in the fact that it sounds like the love child of Slum Village’s underground classic Fantastic Volume 2 and Outkast’s Aquemini. However it sounds like the album that child would’ve recorded after reaching the age of 25.

Dope beats and rhymes that don’t insult our intelligence… That’s all I ask for from hip-hop, and The Weakend definitely delivered.

9. The Foreign Exchange Authenticity

With his hip-hop group Little Brother officially dead in the water, Phonte turned his full attention to his Foreign Exchange project with producer Nicolay.  Their third album together, Authenticity, moves even further away stylistcally from their 2003 debut, Connected.

Delving into more of an adult-contemporary sound, without entering cheeseball territory (hello Kem!), Authenticity continues Phonte’s mission to give a voice to the regular Joe going through the same emotional ups and downs that life hands all of us.

8. Jamie Lidell Compass

Hailing from the UK, Jamie Lidell started out doing heavily experimental electronic music under the name Super Collider.  Over the years, he’s evolved into quite the unexpected soul man, beginning with the release of his 2005 album Multiply.

On Compass, Jamie continues to put his own spin on soul music, channelling Prince on “I Wanna Be Your Telephone,” D’Angelo on “It’s A Kiss,” while “Enough’s Enough” sounds like a song that could’ve fit in the Jackson 5′s repertoire.

Considering the cast of characters enlisted to help out, mostly white indie-rock darlings like Beck and Leslie Feist, the album is one of the most surprising and satisfying listens I had all year.

7. Blue Six Noesis

Jay Denes’ Blue Six project has gone on to define the sound of deep, soulful house music over the last 10 years.  His third project under the name, Noesis, is simply the soundtrack to a fun and sexy night.

The songs are sparse, the guest female vocalists deliver breathy and sensuous performances over the smooth four-on-the-floor beats.

Frankly, the whole thing sounds like sex on a tropical island paradise, and there ain’t nothin wrong with that.

6. Cee Lo Green Stray Bullets

Before releasing his The Lady Killer album in November, Cee Lo Green and DJ Greg Street dropped the Stray Bullets mixtape which featured Cee Lo singing over embellished tracks from the likes of Esthero , the B-52s, and others.

For as much as we have been enjoying The Lady Killer, the Stray Bullets mixtape edges it out due to the versatility on display.  Cee Lo goes from being a lounge singer on “Talking To Strangers” to getting funked up on “Sophisticated B*tch.”

Even if it was just meant as an appetizer The Lady Killer, I got full off of the many tasty morsels included on Stray Bullets.

5. Onra Long Distance

French beatmaker Onra hopped into a time machine with his drum machine and went back to the early 1980s on his 2010 release Long Distance.  The album is solely made up of samples from obscure and not-so-obscure songs from the post-disco era.

The S.O.S. Band’s “High Hopes” gets looped up and updated to amazing results.  Five Star’s “Let Me Be The One” is turned into a Slum Village-esque jam that just so happens to feature SV’s T3 on vocals.

Since most of the tracks are instrumental and barely last for 2 minutes, none of the tracks overstay their welcome, and the guest vocalists never feel like they were just tacked on to add name recognition to the project.

4. N*E*R*D Nothing

Though many casual fans of the Neptunes seem to like each subsequent album from their N*E*R*D project less than the one that preceded it, I, on the other hand think they get better with each record.

What bothered me most about previous N*E*R*D albums were the cringeworthy and juvenile lyrics that would find their way into songs.  While they are still there on Nothing, they are surrounded by what just might be the most sophisticated production ever committed to tape by Pharrell & Chad.

3. Janelle Monae The ArchAndroid

The ArchAndroid was my most anticipated album of the year.  The concept album continues the story of an android named Cindi Mayweather who falls in love with a human that Monae first introduced on her Metropolis EP.

Easily the most ambitious album released all year, Janelle Monae doesn’t let the listener get comfortable as each song seems to be a completely different genre than the one before, or the one that comes after it.

That everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach would ruin most albums, but somehow it manages to work and feel cohesive.

2. The Roots How I Got Over

?uestlove is notoriously anal when it comes to every aspect of putting an album together, and it’s obvious that on How I Got Over, the one detail he probably lost the most sleep over was the album’s sequencing.

Every song is perfectly placed on the album.  The first half being quite a bit introspective and somber, but by the second half, the album’s title begins to make even more sense. The songs begin to take on a hopeful, optimistic, and dare I even say fun tone.

The album does begin to drag towards the end, but I gotta give them props for sampling the auto-tuned crying baby on the album’s closing track, “Hustla.”

1. Erykah Badu New Amerykah Part 2: Return Of The Ankh

Where Badu’s 2008 album New Amerykah Part 1: 4th World War addressed societal issues in a cold, almost robotic manner, the analogue girl in a digital world explores the tried and true topic of human emotion on Return of the Ankh.

The album’s deceptively organic feel made for a moving listen throughout 2010, and I’ll probably still be listening to it throughout the duration of 2011, something I can’t say about most albums released this year.

You aren’t alone, Erykah!  We first noticed the switch to “pop techno cornball a** music” around the time Akon came on the scene (yeah, we’re naming names!!!!).  When Usher dropped “OMG” this summer, it was a wrap.  Black music has been whitewashed beyond our wildest nightmares.

David Banner & 9th Wonder’s long awaited Death of a Pop Star album has seemingly been in the works for forever, but with the album dropping November 9th, more solid details about the record are now starting to come out!

David Banner & 9th Wonder’s album, Death of A Pop Star, which will be released on Banner’s own Big Face Entertainment label, will feature collaborations with Anthony Hamilton, Ludacris, and Erykah Badu.

At 9 tracks, the album also seems a little on the short side, but judging from 9th Wonder’s debut collaboration with MURS, the underground classic Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition, which was only 10 tracks, we probably shouldn’t feel shortchanged.

Erykah Badu paid a $500 fine to the city of Dallas for her nude stroll through the city’s Dealey Park in March as featured in her controversial video for “Window Seat.”

Badu was charged with disorderly conduct and after paying the fine was given six months of probation.

In the video for “Turn Me Away (Get Munny), Erykah addresses the controversy through a dramatic sequence involving her being picked up from jail wearing a prison issued gown by Rick Ross.

After causing quite a controversy with her video for “Window Seat” earlier this year, Erykah Badu is finally back with a brand new video.

Picking up where “Window Seat” left off, Erykah is picked up from jail by Rick Ross, who does his rap from the “Window Seat” remix. The two hop in a car and drive off before ditching the car for a second one. The video ends with them heading off to do something else illegal…

Oh, and just because we can….

“I look at some other videos. I’m not naming names, because I don’t want that to be mentioned. There is the thing with sexuality. I’m naked for 13 seconds, and these people are naked the whole time and gyrating and saying come “lick on my lollipop,” and “suck on my cinnamon roll,” and, you know, suggesting sex. People are uncomfortable with sexuality that’s not for male consumption. could be ‘cause I did it in public too. Do you think people would have been complaining if I had on high-heel shoes?”
