King will announce the nominations on December 14th on TNT.tv and TBS.com. In the weeks leading up to the telecast, she will update Facebook and Twitter feeds discussing behind the scenes preparations for the show and also divulge information on who will be presenting. A cool part of King’s Ambassador role is that she will be able to discuss red carpet fashions as the stars arrive.

This past Monday’s eve at 11:59 EST, the twitterverse was abuzz with word that Jay Z and Kanye West ‘s Watch the Throne was the best album to be released this year, and possibly the decade. Thousands of hundreds on Facebook agreed. Nothing wrong with being a committed fan, but seeing as it was one of the first highly anticipated albums of the millennium to avoid the plague of premature leakage, my eyebrow immediately raised with the realization the majority of people proclaiming the project’s awesomeness were doing so before they had even heard a single track beyond “Otis.” Instantaneously iconic, when the clock did strike midnight heralding in August 8^th, a moment in music’s history officially began as “Hov” and ‘Ye are now tracked to sell more than 500,000 copies, and poised to break iTunes one week sales record which was previously set by Coldplay in 2008.

So here’s the question. Was the music driving the fans or were the fans driving the music? Consider this. A few weeks ago, controversy ensued after news broke that Rihanna had ousted Lady Gaga as Most Popular Mistress on Facebook with a timely boost of 100,000 fan “likes.” What once used to be college play has turned into big business. Pulling receipts, Boston-based viral marketing firm ViralMS.com, which offers a service that allows users to purchase Facebook “fans,” confirmed that for $7,799 someone had indeed bought Rihanna’s popularity for a very specific reason. Perception is Everything. Gaga fans were shook and outraged. Millions of Rihanna fans felt duped. But how mad can one really be when they have allowed their value of an artist to be largely based on how much someone else values them first?  Known as “The bandwagon effect,” scientist say the phenomenon occurs when people often do and believe things merely because many other people do and believe the same things. This is the very odd era we now find ourselves living in.

Which brings us to White Girl Mob. Called “Multimedia Artists”, these three ladies are each very…special. Their online “following” has built them higher than any lyrical foundation they could ever attempt to lay claim to. However the interest in their social status had enough pull that WGM member Kreayshawn signed to Columbia Records earlier this summer with an originally rumored one million dollar recording contract. Feel free to check out one of her illustrious freestyles for yourself and decide if you think she is the proverbial real deal or a great example the bandwagon fan effect is having on the music industry (LINK).

The truth is the dynamic of fans/followers holds major weight in today’s world. Whether one is a superstar artist with record labels shelling out big bucks to secure their social stock; an out of work job seeker looking for employment in a social currency focused economy; or simply a pre-pubescent 7^th grader in a small town trying to figure life out. None of us are immune.

Try this quick self-check. Do you count your twitter followers? If so how often? Clock your FB comment likes? Toggle your tumblr #’s on the weekly if not daily? If so, what do these numbers tell you about yourself? If not, how have you avoided the “Bandwagon Effect” so many are succumbing to? We are now forced to contemplate a question very similar to the age old chicken or the egg conundrum…what came first, the artist or the fans?

As for Jay Z and Kanye’s Watch the Throne, I still plan to listen to it…but decided I’m going to wait a bit until the echoing chorus of the band fades out allowing me to better hear their music for myself…

In the world of love and relationships, social networking has become a double edged sword. Social networking sites have revolutionized interpersonal relationships for the digital age, specifically romantical relationships. Whether a relationship was built and formed or simply maintained on sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, these sites have changed dating forever. For many young people who grew up on the internet, dating has always entailed knowing your partner’s every move, resulting in a generation that accepts quasi-stalking.

For the 47% of adults over the age of 27 that are members of a least one social networking site, we must do better than those in a younger age bracket. That means that as tempting and as easy as it is to “track” the object of your affection, don’t do it. What’s both scary and comical is that many of us wont admit to our stalking tendencies. The truth is, your obsession with following your boo’s every move on Facebook is just as unhealthy as hiding in the bushes at night. Because so many are in denial of their stalking tendencies, here are 10 ways to determine if you’re social networking stalker:

1. You check his or her profile page more than four times a day.
You don’t need to review status updates, profile pic changes and added friends every 20 minutes. If communication between the two people involved is at the level it should be, then you should already know what your partner is doing without caring about every single little detail that he or she chooses to post.

2. If you’ve Googled “How to retrieve a person’s password.”
You’ve already gotten them to log onto their profile on your computer, hoping ‘Autoform’ would save the password. Now you’re upset it didn’t work, and you’re searching for how to crack the code. Passwords are created to protect privacy. If you’re bold enough to go on a mission to get your partner’s password, how about being bold enough to ask directly?

It might not be as hotly anticipated as the “Beatles: Rock Band” game, but Microsoft announced at its annual press briefing at the E3 Expo that Facebook and Twitter will be coming to the Xbox Live service.

The press event included short demonstrations of what are effectively Facebook and Twitter clients for the gaming console, aesthetically adapted to the Xbox Live interface.

With the Facebook app, which will be a download from Xbox Live, members will be able to engage in a limited number of features including photo browsing, status updates, and looking at friends’ profile “streams.”

But what’s more important to game developers is the fact that the Facebook Connect standard–which was rolled out first to Web developers, and then to iPhone developers–is coming to the Xbox this fall. This means that players will be able to log in with their Facebook accounts and broadcast their gaming activities on their social-network profiles.

Xbox manufacturer Microsoft made a $240 million investment in Facebook in October 2007. The service now has well over 200 million active users around the world.

Both Facebook products are “penciled in for the fall,” Facebook platform program manager Gareth Davis told CNET News. He said that while there currently aren’t plans to bring Facebook’s virtual currency plans to the Xbox, he implied that it’s not out of the question. “We’re constantly looking at ways of improving the user experience or the developer experience with Facebook credits,” Davis said.

Over the weekend, “Prom Queen,” the first single off of Lil Wayne’s rock album Rebirth infiltrated the Internet and was posted on a plethora of blogs and Web sites, including The Urban Daily. But two of Lil Wayne’s producers, although excited about the choice, were a little surprised upon hearing that “Prom Queen” would be Rebirth’s first single.

Producers Drew Correa, who previously worked with Lil Wayne as his engineer, and Infamous were shocked to even hear that Lil Wayne was creating a rock album, let alone that their track “Prom Queen” would be the album’s first single.

“Wayne hit me up one night and wanted us to come through the studio to make some tracks with him live. When the track came together the next morning, everyone thought it was the shit, and he [Wayne] told us it would be a single,” producer Drew Correa told Billboard. “We thought he was joking. We thought he was just saying that to be nice. But, a couple of days later we were signing paperwork and it was actually happening.”

“You gotta give him credit–he’s done everything he can with Hip Hop and has proven himself,” Infamous explained to Billboard. “Now he’s about to prove himself as a rocker and we’re excited to be a part of it.”

In similar news, Lil Wayne will perform “Prom Queen” for the first time ever at a concert in San Diego that will be streamed live, thanks to AT&T and their FREEdom of Choice and Mobile Music Facebook pages.

“We have streamed festivals and shows in the past, but this is the first time AT&T will stream a live performance for our Facebook pages,” AT&T spokesperson Heather Buffington told Billboard.

“I’m honored that AT&T selected me as the first artist to be a part of this historic live event,” said Lil Wayne through a press release. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Wayne had 2008′s top-selling ringtone, with “Lollipop” selling 2,365,000 copies.

The concert will stream live at 9:40 p.m. PST on January 27, and after the concert the “Prom Queen” ringtone will be available for download to AT&T customers.

If you’ve received a message like that through Facebook or MySpace, you may have been exposed to the “Koobface” virus. “Koobface” comes through an e-mail sent by one of your social networking site friends inviting you to scope out a video.

Once the URL is clicked, “Koobface” prompts you to update your Flash player before the video can be displayed. Therein lies the virus, cloaked in a “flash_player.exe” file. According to the Kaspersky Lab, an antivirus organization working closely with Facebook, “the worms transform victim machines into zombie computers to form botnets.”

The McAfee Security Blog explains that when “Koobface” infects your computer, it prompts a downloaded service named Security Accounts Manager (SamSs) to load on start-up. SamSs then proxies all HTTP traffic, stealing results from popular search engines and hijacking them to lesser-known search sites.

A clear eye for fraud will help you avoid this mess. You can usually spot phony e-mails by their titles. Kaspersky found the following: Paris Hilton Tosses Dwarf On The Street; Examiners Caught Downloading Grades From The Internet; You must see it!!! LOL. My friend catched you on hidden cam; Is it really celebrity? Funny Moments. My own “Koobface” attack came in an e-mail entitled, lool, yoour blushingg afce is so funny! Checkk out. Obviously, Paris Hilton never threw dwarves, and in all likelihood, my 26-year-old friend knows how to spell more than two words. These are clear indicators you’re being attacked.

Facebook has posted instructions about how to remove the “Koobface” virus: give your computer an antivirus scrub-down and change your Facebook password.

This attack on the world’s most popular social networking site and its 120 million users comes just weeks after Facebook won an $873 million lawsuit against several people accused of hacking user accounts and spreading spam.

It will be a long, long time before alleged spammer Adam Guerbuez of Montreal is found, much less coughs up that much money, but Facebook hopes the size of the judgment will scare off other spammers.

“Everyone who participates constructively in Facebook should feel confident that we are fighting hard to protect you against spam and other online nuisances,” Max Kelly, Facebook’s director of security, wrote Monday on the company’s blog.

Guerbuez obtained many Facebook emails through phishing techniques, then spammed users with ads for penis enlargement products and similar offers.

“Despite the resources dedicated to spam eradication, current available technology does not permit Facebook to completely prevent the transmission of spam on its site,” the company’s lawyers wrote in the case against Guerbuez.

On the night of what will probably be the most historic election of my lifetime, I have finally decided to publish this blog. Now before I go any further, I want to make one thing clear. I support Senator Barack Obama for the presidency of the United States of America. And while I do not pretend to be a political pundit of any form or fashion or even a hard news writer, I have done my research on both candidates-as any good voter should.

That’s the issue I have with the “idea of Obama,” and by that I mean this phenomenal support that the junior senator from Illinois has garnered, my fear is that while many have done their due diligence to align themselves with the candidate that best speaks to their issues (the economy, healthcare, the war in Iraq), more often than not many voters will be voting for Obama simply because he’s become a pop culture phenomenon with enough swag to rival that of Hannah Montana or because he simply has the support of famous friends like Jay-Z, will.i.am and Scarlett Johansson or… simply because he’s black. There, I said it!

As I said, I am by no means a politico, but I do know a thing or two about pop culture. It is with that said, that I firmly assert the following statement: “The 2008 Presidential election has been little more than a popularity contest akin to any glorified reality show. Granted, its prize is not an iron clad record contract or a committed relationship with some washed-up D-lister, but it is still being promoted, watched and merchandized with the same rampant fervor. Between the music videos, t-shirts, comic books and action figures, I think many of us, particularly in the hip-hop generation; have become swept up in the idea of Barack Obama rather than truly understanding the issues that the man represents. In all honesty, it’s Obama’s fault. To many Obama represents what our entire generation represents – change, ambition and aspiration. From Russell Simmons and Diddy to MySpace and Facebook, Barack Obama’s campaign speaks to the younger generations in a way that no other candidate has. He has all the flash (not to mention the swagger and marketing) of Diddy, the reach of MySpace and the influence of Hov. But beyond all that, what do YOU really know about Obama? Have you researched his policies of the history of his running mate? Probably not. But you rock the buttons, the t-shirts and nod to all the tribute mixtapes.

Fortunately, Obama is the right candidate (or at least I think so). But imagine if we all got swept up in the mania of supporting a candidate that was NOT the right candidate simply because he had celeb support, cool marketing tricks and swagger. Luckily, that didn’t happen this time, but I’m just saying….
