When Chris Brown rapped “Look At Me Now,” some fashion critics didn’t like what they saw. The British version of GQ magazine has crowned the singer the worst dressed man on the planet. Clearly they never say Lil Wayne in his jeggings.

Only Kanye can do something like that.”

Even before Kanye had become the multi-platinum Grammy-winning artist he is today, he was making the fashion world pay attention. The former art student even uses his own blog to exercise his artistic vision, which leans less towards music and more towards his love and passion for style.

This past October, the G.O.O.D. Music head debuted his own womenswear collection, DW by Kanye West,” at Paris Fashion Week in front of the likes of people like Vogue’s Anna Wintour and designers Riccardo Tisci and Alexander Wang. The line was inspired by his mother Donda West, who passed away in 2007.

Mike B. recalls one of his first meetings with Kanye, not surprisingly at a Louis Vuitton store. “Back in 2003, I was just beginning to style Chris Brown, Pitbull and Dwayne Wade. I was on my way to meet [Kanye] at the Bal Harbour Mall. I see all this commotion, so I’m thinking that Puff was over there. They were telling people to leave the store. They shut it down because Kanye had requested to be in the store by himself,” he remembers.

The self-proclaimed Louis Vuitton blew up about six months later and has been shopping so much since then, that he “could speak Italian.”

Jay-Z Partners With Pharrell On The Billionaire Boys Club

Jay-Z has partnered with Pharrell on the Billionaire Boys Club clothing line you often see Pharrell and many celebs wearing. GQ.com reported the story incorrectly, saying Jay-Z purchased the line when in actuality Hov did not. “Partnering with @4real4rell on BBC” follow him.. (Not “buying” as GQ erroneously reported.)” tweeted Jay.

Jay-Z’s Rocawear company owns the licensing to manufacture and distribute BBC. Under the terms of the deal Billionaire Boys Club will not be in large department stores. The exact terms of the deal have not been revealed.

Entree is more than a brand, its a lifestyle. Created in 1999 by two friends who printed designs on t-shirts and selling them out of their parents trunk. Entree Lifestyle has come a long way, the brand has gone from being rejected by many store buyers to selling out completely. Entree is currently making their presence known in the fashion world by serving some of your favorite artist in the music industry. Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, Dipset (Jim Jones, Juelz Santana), Bow Wow, Wacka Flocka, Lloyd and many more can been seen wearing their designs. Jazzy F. sits down with Henry Li, one of the two creators to find out what Entree lifestyle is all about.

How did Entree Lifestyle clothing begin?

I started off with 5 t-shirts. I was still in college at the time. I was working a part-time job, and my partner was working. we would just meet up after work and screen print t-shirts — it wasn’t even a brand; there was no brand. It’s like kids saying “I have a record deal.” They don’t really have a record label, it’s just them and their boys making music. I had a vision and this was the vision (for it to be like this), and we’re still growing. Did I know for sure it was going to be like this? No. I’m very fortunate to still be doing this right now. Your typical entrepreneurial type story: started in the basement, went from five shirts and started selling throughout the neighborhood. I took those shirts and kept on doing it, kept going door to door, store to store trying to sell my stuff and they would turn us down. We’ve been through all that stuff. And now we’re here; we are a brand, we are supporting those lifestyles and we are in those doors and we’re in a lot of accounts.

What inspired you to get into fashion?

I’m a mid 90s baby. Where I came from, a lot of cats were rocking a lot of vintage Ralph Lauren and North Face — that was the era I came up in. There was no street wear — street wear was clothing, it was brands that were regular American brands, and the streets took it and made it into something. So I was always into the style of how my jeans were, getting these certain sneakers and we had our own little thing going on in our borough. So I wanted to serve that message to the world. Hence the name ‘Entree’ — we’re here to serve, we’re trying to serve what I feel like is Hip-Hop and what street wear should really be. It should be clean, and it should be fresh. I’ve always been very heavily into the dressing and the fashion of Hip-Hop. So I took the opportunity to create my own brand.

What made you guys infuse street art into your designs?

We’re from Brooklyn, and we grew up writing Graffiti, and that was our element of Hip-Hop. My talent lies on the graph, and I incorporate that into the brand. We’re a Brooklyn based company started in 2006. We really felt like there was no genre that we have, that we’re offering right now; we’ve got something different. Our brand speaks for itself. When the whole world was doing something else, and from the business aspect, to play it safe you may want to make the same similar stuff to whatever’s selling We didn’t go with that. We did what we felt was good. And when we were coming out, that’s why we have one of our slogans, ‘misunderstood’, we were misunderstood; they didn’t really understand what the brand was about, and that’s what really separates us from everybody else — we don’t really follow what’s going on; we are creating our own path and creating our own fan base and doing what we love and transferring that into our clothes.

Would you consider Entree Lifestyle a urban brand?

I actually don’t really like to use the word ‘urban’ because when you use the word ‘urban’, you tend to pigeon-hole yourself. We’re just in the business of making clothes. We are a clothing line and we embrace the streets.

What does fashion mean to you?

I’m speaking on behalf of me, Henry: My definition of fashion is “be yourself.” The clothes in my closet is my costume. Who I’m going to be today is what I’m going to wear. Clothes don’t change you, but they certainly make a statement. I’m all about comfort. The swag gotta be on point. But the main thing is don’t be a follower, and wear what you want to wear. Be true to yourself and that’s fashion.

Do you think that Entree is portraying the lifestyle to the fullest?

We are living that lifestyle right now. We still are the real people. We didn’t change. Nothing changed. I still do grassroots marketing, we still put up stickers, we’re still doing illegal street art — we practice what we preach. We’re not faking the funk. We’re living the lifestyle we’re trying to sell.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to step outside the box of the trends?

Trends will always be there. If you’re a rebel of the trends, be yourself. Start your own trend. Don’t follow the trend because you’ll never gain respect that way. Nobody will ever take you seriously. We have a saying in the skate community: posers. You don’t want to be a poser. If you’re not a skateboarder, don’t walk around with a skateboard. It all comes down to being yourself.

Kanye West‘s new line of scarves feature artwork from his latest album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The scarves prominently feature artist George Condo’s artwork.

The scarves are set go on sale Monday and are limited to 100 of each design. They will retail for $365 a piece and will be sold exclusively through French boutique Colette, Chicago’s RSVP Gallery, and online on M/M (Paris)’s website.

For years hip-hop and fashion have become synonymous. Being a rapper means looking the part; from throwbacks to white tees rappers have been notorious for influencing the way hip-hop heads dress.

So it’s a no-brainer for rappers to aspire to start their own clothing line. The problem is not everyone who can put lines to paper can put stitching to fabric. Here are some of our favorite rappers successful (and unsuccessful) attempts at starting a clothing line. — Ebony LaDelle

Naughty Gear: Naughty By Nature

Founded in 1993, Naughty Gear holds the unofficial title of the first hip-hop artist clothing line. Their shop in Newark,NJ was the first of its kind, offering hoodies, boxers and various parafernalia emblazoned with the Naughty By Nature baseball bat logo.

Wu Wear: Wu-Tang

Wu Wear was founded in 1995 and was the first hip-hop artist clothing line to be in national chains like Macy’s.

Phat Farm: Russell Simmons

Phat Farm, a division of Phat fashions, has become a multi-million dollar business since its launch in 1992.

Rocawear: Jay-Z

Rocawear has been another brand to receive international success. The brand was started in 1999 and although Jay-Z sold the line, he still has a stake in the company and oversees development of the brand.

Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream: Pharrell

While it’s hard for most rappers to produce one quality fashion label, Pharrell has been able to produce two! The brand focuses on high-end luxury sportswear.

Sean Jean: Diddy

Launched in 1998, Sean John has been extremely successful, going from a regular rapper’s clothing line to an international brand.

Apple Bottoms: Nelly

Made for women who have a curvaceous behind, the Apple Bottom label has become one of the more famous brands created by a rapper. The line was featured on the Oprah show in 2004 when she wore a pair and in O, The Oprah magazine soon after.

Play Cloths: The Clipse

Play Cloths is a clothing line that focuses on high quality garment creations. The Clipse feel by keeping the brand and their career separate, it allows the line to do well on its own. (watch their interview with TT Torrezz about Play Cloths)

8732: Young Jeezy’s clothing line

Originally titled USDA (United Streets and Dopeboys of America), Jeezy was forced by the United States government to change the name. Instead, Jeezy kept the name by converting the letters into pager numbers.

AKOO: T.I.

AKOO, meaning a king of oneself, was launched in 2009 and although doing fairly well was recently slapped with a lawsuit. A music network, AKOO International, claims they have the rights to that name.

Benjamin Bixby: Andre 3000

Andre 3000 launched Benjamin Bixby in 2008, but with the high prices and no brand equity, Bixby was forced to lower their prices in half in order to sell the clothes.

Rich and Infamous: Snoop Dogg

Launched in 2008, the Rich and Infamous debuted on BET’s “Rip the Runway.” However, the line was affected by the recession according to Snoop.

Shady Ltd.: Eminem

Eminem launched his brand in 2003 and in 2006 the line was acquired by Rocawear to relaunch.

Makaveli Clothing: Tupac

Afeni Shakur launched Makaveli clothing seven years after Tupac’s death to keep his legacy alive. A portion of each sale goes to various Tupac organizations and rappers such as DJ Quik, Ludacris and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony appeared on the print advertisements.

Dirt McGirt: Ol’ Diry Bastard

Ol’ Dirty Bastard launched his clothing line in 2007 which also included his underwear line, Ol’ Dirty Drawers. Unfortunately with his sudden death, his clothing line was never able to take off.

David Brown: Young Buck

Young Buck’s clothing line premiered online in 2007 at a the MAGIC show in 2008. Unfortunately, his clothing line went out of business.

Shago: Bow Wow

Shago, which was launched in 2003, was a shorter version of his real name Shad Gregory Moss. The rapper eventually discontinued the line.

DMX Signature Collection: DMX

The clothing line attempted to launch in 2007, but with DMX’s career on the rocks, DMX Signature didn’t have a fighting chance.

CEO: Dame Dash

Founded in 2006, this clothing line didn’t have much staying power with retailer’s hesitant to put the line in stores.

Outkast Clothing; Outkast

The duo launched their line in 2002 but with no original pieces and Outkast unwilling to wear their own clothing, the line left just as quickly as it came.

Todd Smith: LL Cool J

Originally debuted at Macy’s as upscale urban wear, Todd Smith slowly fizzled out and LL Cool J partnered with Sears to create LL Cool J. Eventually the line folded.

P. Miller: Master P

Although P. Miller tried to compete with the likes of Sean Jean and Rocawear when it first launched, once the economy hit Master P thought like a businessman. He lowered the price and now P. Miller can be found in Wal-Mart stores, becoming the first African-American hip hop supplier at Wal-Mart.

Nostic: Jim Jones

Jim Jones debuted Nostic in 2008 meaning knowledge of self and individuality. The line, which was spearheaded by Jim’s mother, is a revolution of the mind and lifestyle. However, after the initial launch stores stopped carrying the collection.

Jay-Z is all about some Roca Wear part 2. According to ENTmoney.com, the rapper is focusing on making the Artful Dodger clothing line he bought for 15 million in 2007 into something that he can make some money off of it. Remember he sold Roca Wear for over 200 million.

This time around Jay is producing high end denim that is a bit more pricer than his previous Roca Wear brand. Jeans are ranging from $150-$200 and the shirts $70-$130.

Rapper Kanye West is planning to move to London to pursue his love of fashion, according to a new report.

The hitmaker is reportedly set to move to the British capital to take on an apprenticeship at a design house to learn the basics of his craft.

And the hip-hop star, who is currently designing his own line called Pastelle, is said to be applying to train at leading fashion firms across Europe, including Louis Vuitton’s headquarters in London.

West says, “I’m going to go and take an internship and just do something that’s like completely normal and just rap on the weekends or something.”

A source tells Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper, “He’s applying at Louis Vuitton, Raf Simmons and others.”

“Everyone is surprised at just how seriously Kanye is taking his fashion dream. He is always in the front rows during the Paris and Milan fashion weeks. He absolutely loves London and wants to absorb the fashion over here.”
