There was no doubt how beloved Heavy D was at his funeral service today in Mount Vernon. Hundreds packed Grace Baptist Church, and people like Jay-Z, Diddy, Will Smith, Usher, Johnny Gill, Queen Latifah, Samuel L. Jackson, John Legend, Jada Pinkett Smith and more were in attendance.

President Barack Obama wasn’t able to make it, but sent a note read by Rev. Al Sharpton to express his condolences:

We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Heavy D was beloved by many and several of his famous friends paid their respect at his viewing and wake service yesterday. Celebrities were expected to wait until today to attend the private funeral, but some of them decided to send Heav on his peaceful journey along with his fans. Hip-Hop producer Pete Rock recently spoke to BET.com about the loss of his cousin Heavy D, who was instrumental in launching his career. “Heavy was our world,” said Pete, 41. “The craziest, funniest guy to be around.”

Here is an excerpt of his memories of Heavy D :

Hev lost two brothers and Troy [Heavy's friend and backup dancer], so we’re familiar with the pain. This news felt like a 12 gauge shot to the heart. It’s hard to grasp, I feel like he’s gonna call me any second. We spoke to each other every other day. I just spent the weekend at his house and we did a song together. He didn’t want me to leave, kept trying to keep me at his house, thinking of things for me to do. I was laughing ’cause I was like, ‘Hev, I got to go home and get back to work [laughs]!’ I now realize that God allowed us to have that time together for a reason. He wanted to put me with him one last time. We had so much fun, ate Chinese food, really ate like crazy in the studio [laughs]. I thank God for Hev believing in me. The last words I heard him say was how proud he was of me.

A private funeral will be held for rapper Heavy D on Friday November 18th at Grace Baptist church in his hometown of Mt. Vernon. A public viewing will take place the day before from noon to 6pm.

Dwight “Heavy D” Myers died on November 8th at the age of 44. He was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. Tuesday after collapsing in front of his home.

Russell Simmons stopped by VH1′s “Big Morning Buzz Live” earlier today to discuss Heavy D’s influence on hip-hop. Simmons said when he and Uptown Records founder Andre Harrell first listened to “Mr. Big Stuff” they were blown away by Heavy’s vocals and melody. Simmons goes on to say “Heavy was the first R&B rapper to be accepted. They built Uptown records and the new jack swing sound on his ideas.”

Heavy D passed away yesterday at the age of 44.

Every stop of Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s Watch The Throne Tour has been consistent for the most part, but the late Heavy D was acknowledged at last night’s show in New York City. Instead of deviating from the set list, by playing some of his music, Jay and ‘Ye honored Heav with a simple shout out.

Heavy D died unexpectedly in Los Angeles on November 8th. The official cause has not been determined, but he reportedly succumbed to complications from pneumonia.

Heavy D was best known as a rapper, but he had a multi-faceted career that was broader than the scope of the average hip-hop artist.

1.) Hip-Hop Exec: Heavy D was the first rapper to become president of established record label, Uptown Records. Jay-Z made headlines when he was named president of Def Jam in 2005, but Heavy D took on the same role at Uptown in 1996.

2.) Uptown Upstart: The first act signed to Uptown Records was Heavy D & The Boyz, and their success paved the way for Mary J. Blige, Jodeci and Soul 4 Real on the record label. Heavy D’s talent helped transform owner Andre Harrell into a mogul.

3.) Rapper/Actor: In 1990, Heavy D made his move into the acting world and landed roles in both film and television. He was even seen in high profile movies like Be Cool (2005) and Tower Heist (2011). See Heavy’s acting resume here.

Heavy D will be remembered by many music fans for his classic songs like “Don’t Curse”, “Now That We’ve Found Love” and “Mr. Big Stuff.” But Dwight Myers was one of the first rappers to make the leap to Hollywood.

The Jamaican born artist put his hometown of Mt. Vernon on the map musically but tinsel town loved him just the same. One of his first small screen appearances was on an episode of “A Different World” as himself and as Fatz Turner on the TV series “Booker.” His most recent role on the big screen was in the Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller comedy Tower Heist.

Heavy D‘s unexpected death today in Los Angeles has stunned his family, friends and fans, and his last tweets have taken on an eerie feel.

After boxing legend Joe Frazier succumbed to liver cancer, Heavy tweeted, “Gods speed, Mr Frazier” and described him as “truly one of the best heavyweight champs that ever lived.”

Two hours after sending out a message acknowledging the passing of Frazier, Heavy simply stated, “Be inspired.”

Heavy D will undoubtedly be missed, and we wish him a peaceful journey.

Hip Hop legend, Heavy D, has died at the age of 44! TMZ reports that he was “rushed to an L.A. hospital around noon today … and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1 PM.” The cause of death is currently unknown.

Heavy D, real name Dwight Arrington Myers, recently performed on the BET Hip Hop Awards and is in the movie “Tower Heist.”

We are waiting on a statement from Andre Harrell.

“A 911 call was placed from Heavy’s Beverly Hills home around 11:25 AM to report an unconscious male on the walkway When help arrived, we’re told Heavy D was conscious and speaking — and was transported to a nearby hospital. ”
