Besides fame and fortune, celebrities showed us 2011 was all about love. Not just finding and sustaining, but falling in and out of love, and all the sloppy behavior in between. Instead of doing a normal retrospect of urban celebrity romances, we’ve decided to hand out awards commemorating love in 2011. The nominees are…

The “We Don’t Believe You, You Need More People” Award
This award seeks to honor those whose relationship seemed more of a stunt than real.

Frankie Lons & Slick ‘Em (Pretty Ricky)
Olivia & Maino
Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries

Winner: Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries
From the jump, skeptical comments got tossed in their direction. Mr. and Mrs. Kim Kardashian’s reported $14 to $18 million dollars they made didn’t make the public believe in the union any further. The marriage ended 72 days later and E! cameras caught the crumbling marriage all on tape. That’s karma for that ass.

“Freak! She’s an animal. She took over Paris Hilton’s spot in being the big freak. Paris wouldn’t have done nothing like that [getting married]. We need Paris back. Kim is very predictable. She did a porno like Paris to get in the game, started hanging out with the celebrities and freakin them to get more notoriety. She don’t sing, she don’t act, she has to do something to stay relevant

The “Really?! More Non-News About You Again” Award
This trophy is for the most overexposed couple of the year.

Wiz Khalifa & Amber Rose
Beyonce & Jay-Z
T.I. & Tiny

Winner: Wiz Khalifa & Amber Rose
Amber Rose has seen her lady bits grace computer screens since the day Kanye West plucked her from strip club obscurity. Kanye made sure she was seen and not heard. When Rose snagged Wiz, she was allowed to speak and hasn’t stopped. Their working on her debut single, he’s working with Snoop, and she’s a judge on a DJing competition reality show. Every time they pop up somewhere we just wish they’d return to whichever medical marijuana plant they floated out of.

The “Ultimate Jump Off Come-Up” Award

This honor goes to the woman who started out as a basic side chick, but has made the come up to main chick.

Kimbella
Hoopz
Safaree

Winner: Hoopz
Please someone explain to me how you get fame by going on a show to compete for the love of Flavor Flav and wind up married to Shaq with no prenuputial agreement. Sure, she scored a few coins from those calendars and modeling jobs, but Hoopz should be used as a how to guide or something. Rich men, beware. Hoopz has provided a blueprint for these thirsty potential jumpoffs. Hide your wife and your wallet.

The “Cry Me A River” Award

Here, we honor the couple with the most dramatic break up that played out in front of the world.

Emily B. & Fabolous
Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony
Joe Budden & Esther Baxter

Winner: Joe Budden & Esther Baxter
When these two were good, we liked them as a couple. All of that went out the window when she alleged he physically abused her leading to a miscarriage. Budden slandered her on social networking sites and she did the same in an incendiary interview with Bossip. So glad the drama is done with.

The “You Should Get Tested Before Things Go Any Further” Award

The recipient of this honor has been linked to more than a few people. The next conquest of these nominees might want them to get tested before engaging in any type of sex.

Rihanna
Lil Wayne
50 Cent

Winner: Rihanna
Rihanna was seen traveling around the world with a variety of different men. More often than not, a drink was within the vicinity also. Her wild antics has caused some judgmental viewers to label her a “drunk h*e.” I wonder if she’ll drink to that.

The “That’s Some Triflin’ S**t” Award

The people up for this award all did some ratchet mess which caused them to lose some fans.

Shaq marries Hoopz sans pre-nup
Chris Brown’s nude photo leak
Esther Baxter fetus photo

Winner: Esther Baxter

Hip-Hop America was horrified when they heard she lost her unborn child at the hands of Joe Budden. When he denied the situation, the ultrasound photo of the unborn baby hit the ‘net. Instead of telling the truth, Baxter claimed Bossip stole the picture and posted without her knowledge. That story worked for about two seconds. Bossip came out and stated they got the picture from Baxter’s own camp. That’s ratchet as hell!

The “They Go Together For Real?” Award

This awards is given to the couple that came out of left field.

Sean Kingston & Maliah Michele
Rick Ross & Elise Neal
Slick ‘Em & Frankie Lons

Winner: Rick Ross & Elise Neal

Yes, Slick ‘Em of Pretty Ricky fame dating Frankie Lons is definitely left of center. I choose to believe their relationship ended once the booze were gone. Ross dating Elise Neal is the winner because they actually dated and after they broke up, she was still concerned about him. Remember when he had his seizures? Neal was the first to blast his handlers for his hectic schedule which caused the health scare. The Ross-Neal connection gives hope to all fat black guys that they too can find a woman as bad as Elise Neal. So my delusions of grandeur concerning me and Janet Jackson becoming a real couple isn’t so far fetched? Good. I never thought so anyway.

The Couple of the Year Award

The title says it all.

Swizz Beatz & Alicia Keys
Jay-Z & Kanye West
T.I. & Tiny
Jay-Z & Beyonce

Winner: Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Beyonce

This is a trio instead of a couple. Sue me. These three have been seen together all over the world. Despite announcing her pregnancy, Beyonce has been spotted at almost every Watch The Throne show. In fact, these three have spent so much time together over the last 12 months, we wouldn’t be surprised if Kanye slept in between Bey and Jay in their bed like children often do.

Rap music has gone through its highs and lows. In 2011, rap was at its most polarizing. Whether the debate was to praise or condemn new rappers like Lil B and Tyler The Creator, rap has given the masses something to talk about for the past year.

One thing we can all agree on is there were some seriously stupid lyrics in songs. While we probably rapped right along with the silliness if the song knocked, it doesn’t change the fact that they lowered our collective IQs.

Take a look at some of the most popular songs of the year with ridiculous lines.

Kanye West – “Party”

“You a bad girl and your friends bad too/She got the swag sauce, she drippin’ swagu.”

First of all, ‘swag’ is one of the most overused words in hip-hop’s lexicon. We need to leave it in 2011 along with snapbacks. Secondly, swag sauce? Swagu? Really? I wonder is swagu only available to those who are able to plank on millions and destroy Maybachs for a measly four minute video clip. Swag sauce must be the drink of choice for Illuminati members because I have yet to see any mere mortals dripping with swagu.

Party

Drake - “I’m On One”

“Me and 40 back to work, but still smell like a vacation.”

That line is code for, “I haven’t washed my a** in months.” If that’s the case, someone tell Drake to come find me. I have a Shoprite Price Plus card he can use to get all the soap, wash cloths, and deodorant he needs to survive. In order to redeem himself of this filthy line, he must purify himself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. Who am I kidding, even the special powers of Lake Minnetonka can’t get rid of that much festering bacteria. However, I’m sure he’d be able to keep a woman and have to write pathetic love poems if he washed his ass sometimes.

I’m On One

Nicki Minaj – “Superbass”

“This one is for the boys with the boomin’ system/Top down, AC with the coolin’ system.”

“Superbass” was one of the biggest singles of the year. Partially, because of the melody and the speed at which Nicki Minaj rapped. With her rapping all fast, she slid that stupid line right past us. Why in the world would you have the top down and still have the air conditioner on?! I know she’s balling on a level most of us can’t, but gas prices are still high as all hell and you know she must drive something that posts terrible miles per gallon numbers. Someone find out if the Prius comes with a convertible top option. She’s going to need it.

Superbass

Chris Brown - “Look At Me Now” “Oops, I said on my d**k/I ain’t really mean to say my d**k/But since we’re talking about my d**k/All you haters say hi to it”

This year was tumultuous for C. Breezy. He had his first number one album with F.A.M.E., but that was overshadowed when he threw a hissy fit and a chair at Good Morning America after being asked questions about beating up Rihanna. Why didn’t just respond to Robin Roberts with this line? Oh, because it’s dumb! Chris, the only people talking about your dick are groupies, fans whose thirst runneth over, and probably dudes like Antoine Dodson. Nobody else really cares. Lastly, fire whichever person who told you your raps were what the game was missing!

Look At Me Now

Dr. Dre - “I Need A Doctor”

“One more CD and I’m packing my bags I’m leaving/I’ll guarantee they’ll scream, Dre don’t leave us like that”

With this line, it’s obvious Dr. Dre is still living in the past. Had this song come out around 2000, it would be a different story. However, dude has had us waiting for Detox for 13 years. Nobody cares anymore. I respect him as one of the best producers ever, but last time I was checking for a Dr. Dre album, I was in middle school bumping “The Next Episode.” This new generation of hip-hop fans truly only know him for pushing expensive headphones. So if he packed his ghostwritten rap bags and left the booth, I’m sure nobody would notice.

I Need A Doctor

Wale - “Lotus Flower Bomb”

“I wanna enjoy the luxury of like not really knowing each other”

This line is stupid not because it it doesn’t make sense, but because of how it’s worded. The whole point of the hip-hop love song is to celebrate the period in a new relationship when you’re discovering new things about each other. I can vibe with that. So why would you tell a girl you’re pursuing that you want to enjoy the fact you don’t her. Most females I know would automatically dismiss a potential suitor because she would probably feel like he was just trying to smash. Fellas, don’t follow behind Wale. He might be able to get away with this because of who he is. You are not Wale, so don’t even try it.

Lotus Flower Bomb

Lil Wayne – “She Will”

“I tried to pay attention but attention paid me”

In all honesty, if I had a few months I wanted to waste on writing something truly mundane, I could write a book on all the dumb thing Weezy has said over the years. Weezy almost outdoes himself with “She Will.” Though many will brush this off as Wayne not able to rap that well anymore because he’s sober, I’m not buying it. I’ll chalk this line up to too many years of incestuous behavior with Baby. See what happens when you are getting kissed in the mouth by your daddy at almost 30? It is a proven fact incestuous behavior causes mental retardation. I’m just saying…

She Will

Andre 3000 – “Party” whole verse

3 Stacks gets called the male Lauryn Hill quite a bit. He might be entering his cuckoo-for-cocoa-puffs phase. On a song talking about partying and being with that special someone, Andre Benjamin manages to talk about making a woman climax, how old his son makes him feel, and shout his homeboys Butta and Cheese. Um, what the hell is he talking about?! This verse reminds me of the “In Living Color” skit when Damon Wayans is the guy in prison using big words without understanding the true definitions of the words. ‘The constipation of my dissertation is about the reciprocation of the nation!’ That last sentence made about as much sense as Andre 3000′s “Party” verse.

Party

Tyga – “Rack City”

“If you aint got no a** b***h wear a poncho”

Young Money disciples, please do not try to defend this. Ponchos are made to protect your clothes from the rain. Why exactly would a female have to wear a poncho if she had a flat back with a crack? Plus, if we’re using “rack” as slang for a set of breasts, why would her not having a butt matter? Ah well, I don’t listen to his music anyway. Don’t know why I even said anything.

Rack City

I don’t like to criticize people who sell records, because I know how hard it is. But some of this stuff sounds crazy. There are so many collaborations where an artist doesn’t do a full song. You got a guy saying he’s top dog with 12 dudes on the verse. To have to deliver three verses in a record you have to be a beast. Having all these other people on the song is some b*llshit.

Yelawolf - “Throw It Up”

“Here the king of archery come, with that cracker d**k/ To f**k you in the p***y carpet you munch”

Yelawolf always said some off the wall crap in his lyrics, but this definitely takes the cake. The”king of archery” part is understandable. It’s crass, but understandable. However, the second half leaves me dazed and confused. The problem is he is talking to a man in the song so….yeah. Fall back Yela. That Eminem co-sign is only going to get you but so far. You have to do something better than this!

Throw It Up

Plies – “Just The Tip”

“We aint gotta do nothin/Let me put the head in/I won’t move for nothin though/I’m dead serious”

I am baffled as to how this guy got a record deal. His voice is irritating. As for this song, I just shake my head. I’ve heard R&B thugs beg for some bedroom attention, but rappers are always looking for a bigger and better deal. Plies is pleading just to get a whiff of her goods. If you have to do all of that, she most likely had no intentions of sleeping with you from jump. Begging to just put the tip in only solidifies you are a cornball and won’t find out what style Vicky Secrets she has on. Sidebar: ladies, if you allow a dude to convince you to let him stick the head in, I question the type of parental guidance you’ve had in your life.

While many rappers preferred to talk about gang banging, drug dealing and cop killings, some took a high road to expose the world to the ghettos of America. These rappers probably figured crime doesn’t pay early on, and chose to create lyrical content that encouraged fans in a positive way.

Here’s Hip-Hop’s top five songs that prove crime doesn’t pay.

Slick Rick “Children’s Story”

Uncle Ricky gave us a fairy tale story about a place where “the people wore pajamas and lived life slow,” but things quickly turn when two boys stir up some trouble.

Grandmaster Flash “The Message”

Grandmaster Flash tries to encourage kids to go to school or “your manhood is took and a may tag.”

KRS-One & Friends “Self Destruction”

This 1989 song spearheaded the “Stop the Violence” campaign that started in response to the crime/violence infested African-American communities.

Outkast “The Art Of Storytellin’”

Andre 3000 tells a story of his friend Sasha Thumper, a drug addict/prostitute, who ODs on drugs behind a school building.

Nas “I Can”

This song was specifically made for the kiddies, with a chant that encourages them to be anything they want to be.

Lil’ Wayne covers VIBE Magazine October/November 2011 issue as the leading man in hip hop. The Young Money boss address a few issues in the upcoming issue like the Jay-Z beef, “The Old Guys” in hip hop, the riots in London and Drake being his competition.

Check out the excerpt below!

WAYNE ON JAY-Z AND “THE OLD GUYS”

“There’s no competition [with any artists]. Music isn’t about competition no more. All the gangster rappers are happy, all the skateboard rappers are happy, all the white rappers are happy… Everybody just happy to do music these days. There are no problems. That shit died a long time ago with them old-ass rappers. We are just making music, making money and having fun feeding our families. Competition is for the old guys.”

VIBE: You say competition is for the “old guys,” but it sounds like you’re going at Jay-Z with that line, “I got your baby money/Kidnap your bitch, get that how-much-you-love-your-lady money.” Are we looking at it the wrong way?

LIL WAYNE: I know for a fact, music is about perception. You can’t do anything but perceive what you hear. If I know that for a fact, I can never be upset about someone’s reaction to it. I’m not gonna say I don’t know what will happen before I say it [on record]. I do know what will happen. I am aware of it. It is what it is.

VIBE: So you knew the repercussions of going after Jay before anything even happened?

LIL WAYNE: Well, I’m a man. I believe as a man you should know that. Every man should know the repercussions and consequences behind whatever they do before they do it. And of course, I know there won’t be any repercussions behind what I did.

WAYNE ON LOOKING AT DRAKE AS COMPETITION:

VIBE: You mentioned how humbled you were at the success of “She Will.” Drake, who wrote and performs the song’s chorus, has now become a platinum star in his own right. Do you look at the guy and say, “Wow, I helped create a monster, I have to stay on my toes”?

LIL WAYNE: I don’t look at it like that. Drake is my artist. If he wasn’t my artist, then yeah maybe. But that’s my artist. He’s not [just] a friend. We’re more than friends. It’s business. It would be impossible for it to be a competition. I mean, I’m the guy’s boss.

WAYNE ON HIP-HOP INFLUENCING THE LONDON RIOTS:

VIBE: Given that Cash Money artist Jay Sean is a native of the U.K., you probably have some strong feelings about the London riots and how some talking heads blamed it on hip-hop culture.

LIL WAYNE: All you could do is pray for the people that were dealing with the situation and hope for the best. As far as them blaming hip-hop, you can blame Jesus for things, so you can’t really fault anybody for blaming someone or something. All you can do is hope for the best.

Hip-hop veteran Ice-T created quite a stir on Sunday after making statements about the self-proclaimed rap “boss” Rick Ross. In an interview Ice-T gave prior to the premiere of VH1′s”Planet Rock: The Story of Hip Hop and the Crack Generation,” he says Rick Ross (and many other rappers) are having an identity crisis.

“He thinks he’s [Freeway] Rick Ross, he thinks he’s Larry Hoover, he thinks he’s Big Meech, he thinks he’s MC Hammer, he thinks he’s Tupac. Like, who the f*ck are you really, dude?”

Ice T says many of today’s rappers glamorize a lifestyle that he wanted to escape at a young age.

“I don’t draw a line, I just try to tell the truth. If you tell the truth, itís gonna have a pro side and a con side. So I try to tell the full story, not just the story of when the hustlerís winning, but the trials and tribulations of the sñt he goes through.”

Back in 1994 when Common dropped “I Used To Love H.E.R.” who knew that he’d inspire so many artists to confess their love to hip-hop?

With the single from One Day It’ll All Make Sense, Common elevated hip-hop to a metaphorical woman whose name stood for “Hip-Hop in its Essence and Real” (even though Hearing Every Rhyme is a popular interpretation as well). Producer No ID (who recently cranked out “D.O.A” for Jay-Z) built the beat around a jazzy loop of George Benson’s “The Changing World” and VH1 ranked it # 69 in the 100 greatest rap songs of all time.

Common, “I Used To Love H.E.R.”

George Benson, “The Changing World”

Over the years many MCs have borrowed from the template having hip-hop embody this metaphorical woman in various ways. Some of the relationships have fared better than others, with some MCs breaking up with her, one actually raping the music and others even killing her off. But after all of the abuse S.H.E is still standing.

The Pharcyde “For Better Of For Worse”
This predates Common’s ode by three years but it’s only Trey’s first verse that outlines his intentions to marry “Rhymealinda” who he dreams of having kids with named Mike (Mic) and feeding them beats.

Quotable: “To Rhymealinda I remember umm, when we first met
In eighty-two back in school used to play up all the fools
Sometimes you’d be my number fives sometimes you’d be my twenty-two

The Roots feat. Common – Act too (Love of my life)

The Roots ?uestlove insisted this was not the “daughter” to Common’s original but with Lonnie Lynne on the track it was hard not to see it that way.

Quotable: Used to hit up every corner store wall for you
We ripped shit, and kept it hardcore for you
I remember late nights, steady rockin the mic
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life

Masta Ace ft. Jean Grae – Hold you

One of the more inventive odes, Masta Ace vows love to his microphone. After his confessions we get to hear from the microphone voiced by Jean Grae who weaves the language of the Sennheiser into her very verse.

Quotable: “and there’s still cats who try to touch me when they spot me alone
try to tap me just to see if I’m turned on
but it’s the way you speak to me
its like we on the same frequency and when you hold me, you make peak come on

Jean says: “was nervous as hell. Most people still don’t get that I’m a mic. Subtlety overload on my part.”

Slaughterhouse, “Cut You Loose”
Royce, Joe Budden, Joel Ortiz and Crooked I have had enough of her cheating heart and kick H.E.R. to the curb.

Quotable: How you could thug me?
If I can’t be me when I’m wit’chu, tell me how could you love me?
(How you) Get so ugly – eat it, beat it, treat it better than niggaz
so you still be dyin to fuck me, baby don’t interrupt me!

Tanya Morgan, “She’s Gone”

Donwill, Von Pea and Ilyas (with a little help from Phonte) pour their hearts out–and then a little liquor–offering a heartfelt eulogy for their lady love.

Quotable: “I thought she was too innocent for relations/ until she introduced me to electric relaxation…”

Donwill Says:“… the is actually about the death of brick an mortar record stores. one day while out in Cincinnati I took Von on a driving tour of the city.
Pharoahe Monch, “Rape”

In easily the most extreme interpretation Pharoahe Monch literally rapes hip-hop music in his macabre track from his solo debut, Internal Affairs.

Quotable: Grab the drums by the waistline
I snatch the kick, kick the snares and sodomize the bassline
Never waste time, I give the verse rabies
Cum on the chorus, tell the hook to swallow my babies

J-Live, F/ Asheru & Probe DMS “Kick It To The Beat”

On his debut The Best Part, J-Live shares how he’d “push-up” on the beat if she was a girl in the street..
Quotable:”I wanna lay you down with nothing but your two-inch reels on/then make a strong song that’ll last real long…”

Erykah Badu ft. Common – Love Of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)

Com Sense got his then baby boo to remake his classic for the Brown Sugar soundtrack. This marks the first time hip-hop was referenced as a dude.
Quotable: How could it be that it was/All just so simple then/A teenage love but you say

Nottz, “I Still Love You.”

Rapper/producer Nottz draws inspiration from J-Dilla’s “Love U” from Donuts, which sampled Jerry Butler’s “Because I Love You.” Nottz gives Hip-Hop the name of Roxanne Shante after the iconic female MC.

Inspiring new hip hop cousins Ra Capone and Shay Swinga are on an inspiring journey, to bring life back to music with their new single, “Next First Kiss” off their BIG BOY MUSIC album on January 11th, 2011 at all major music downloading portals ( iTunes and Amazon.com).

With not even one celebrity endorsement or official record deal, the fan base for this groups official project has been tremendous! All songs on the album are written and produced by both, for the exception of Losing My Religion and Let’s Make a Baby, which were produced by Derek “D.O.A.” Allen (who also produced hit records for such artists as Tyrese, Dave Hollister, Slim [of 112] and Bobby Brown).

Since the age of 14 Ra Capone and Shay Swinga, native New Yorkers, would experiment with beat-making and mixing in the basement of Swinga’s house, where they honed their production skills. “It’s an art form that just pulls you in and makes you want more” Swinga says, “What level can an artist reach with their project? I’d think to myself… That’s what makes it so unique. There’s no right or wrong answer. It’s just about what you feel and when you love what you do, it shows in everything you do.” I say Indeed to that!

While they appreciate how the culture has evolved, they believe hip-hop lacks the essence that it was built on. “Now it’s turned into a look how much money I have game” says Capone; “No one really talks about anything of importance anymore”.

Ra Capone and Shay Swinga say they are returning to the music, what it gave to them…”life”. This goodlook comes courtesey of the wonderful folks at Hana & Associates

In this exclusive video premiere on TheUrbanDaily, Dan Charnas, author of the epic new book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, discusses a very controversial story within it.

Cash Money Records, the original home of Lil Wayne and the progenitor of the Young Money crew, got their landmark deal in 1998 in large part because of the efforts of a young woman named Wendy Day, who ran an organization called the Rap Coalition, dedicated to helping rappers get better contracts.

But in an ironic turn of events, when it came time for Cash Money to pay Wendy Day the money they owed her, they refused. And that, Charnas says in the video, is when things got complicated…

Mostly because the labels and the media choose to only promote the most negative music to make money. Still Hip Hop has a long history of positive uplifting songs. Here's my Top 9.

9. Ed O G And The Bulldogs Be A Father To Your Child.

Dope ode to to fatherhood with a great positive message to young black men.

I didn’t even know he’d added MC to his resume. He’s releasing the music under Project A.T.O.M.

“A.T.O.M is an acronym for ADVANCED THOUGHTS OF MASTERMIND,” he says. “I’m on real sci-fi, astronaut shit with hip-hop.”

In the first minute he gives a prologue to what you’re about to hear and around the 1:03 mark he brings the rain. I’m on my fifth play trying to catch all of the lyrics. The beat is produced by The Evolution Project and DProsper.

Remarkably, the total is roughly the same as last year, despite a troubled economy and a music industry thrown into flux by new technology.
