10. Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know (1996)

Any man can attest to the fact if a woman yells all of the time, whatever they’re yelling about goes in one ear and out of the other. In 1995, you couldn’t find an angrier woman screaming about being done wrong than Alanis Morissette. After sweeping every award show know to man, she performed the break up anthem “You Oughta Know” at the 1996 Grammys. Morisette’s performance created such a great impact because she stripped the anger away and sang with all the sadness a pained woman could muster. Who knew Joey from Full House could provoke such emotion.

9. Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mya, Pink, & Patti LaBelle - Lady Marmalade (2002)

It’s common knowledge the remake of the Labelle classic caused plenty of beef between Pink and Christina Aguilera. During happier times, Mya and Lil Kim joined the dueling divas for a rousing rendition of “Lady Marmalade” at the Grammys. The potluck quartet had the audience and viewers rocking. The set was only taken to the next level when Patti LaBelle surprised everyone and tore the stage up with her diva scream. In that one diva scream, Patti LaBelle let those ladies know there still isn’t anything like the real thing.

8. Alicia Keys & Jamie Foxx – If I Aint Got You/Georgia On My Mind (2005)

The planets seemed to align for Jamie Foxx and Alicia Keys in 2005. Foxx was winning awards hand over fist for his impeccable portrayal of music legend Ray Charles. Alicia Keys was killing the game with her single, “If I Aint Got You.” The pair met on the Grammy stage to pay tribute to Ray Charles and proving soul music is still alive and well. The chemistry between Foxx and Keys burned the screen and etched their duet into the memories of every soul music fan around the world.

7.Christina Aguilera – It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World (2007)
When it was first announced Christina Aguilera was going to perform in the James Brown tribute, there was a great deal of shade thrown. Nobody figured Aguilera could do justice to the Godfather of Soul’s catalog. She sure shut us all up. Christina hit the stage draped in white and sang the hell out of “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” She embodied his wild spirit and soulful presence like she was possessed by the man himself. If there was any doubt before, Christina Aguilera cemented her status as one of the greatest vocalists of all time with this performance.

6. Moby, Jill Scott & Blue Man Group – Natural Blues (2001)

In 2001, Jill Scott was still fairly unknown in mainstream circles. Her breakout moment came when she was asked to perform with minimalist rocker Moby and the industrial Blue Man Group. While the names on paper sound like a terrible mix, their performance of Moby’s “Natural Blues” blended industrial drums, brooding rock, and powerful soul music together for a memorable four minutes. Though Scott was shut out of every category she was nominated for that night, the academy rectified their mistake soon after. See what a little showing off can do  for you?

5. Kanye West, John Legend, Mavis Staples & The Blind Boys of Alabama – Jesus Walks (2005)

Kanye West being the egotistical maniac he is, it was only right he show out for his first Grammy appearance. Putting on a production never associated with rappers, Kanye set himself apart from the pack. John Legend and The Blind Boys of Alabama added the gospel feel needed to fully express the importance of “Jesus Walks.” Mavis Staples did her thing despite needing a throat lozenge.  Years later, the most poignant moment of the set was when Kanye and his mother are getting down together when she says, “Only Jesus can save us!”

4. Janet Jackson – What Have You Done For Me Lately (1987)

Janet Jackson took control of her career and the Grammy stage in 1987. Her hit album, Control was nominated for Album of the Year and Janet, along with her Flyte Time crew, proved why. Partially, Janet’s performance is so celebrated because she was still considered Michael’s little sister. Stepping out of the shadow of the greatest artist to ever grace the planet is hard enough, but to do it with such style was amazing. Plus, how cool is to see Jerome, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis doing the funky penguin with Janet Jackson. Shout out to that Paula Abdul choreography. It remains iconic in its own right.

3. Prince and Beyonce – Purple Rain Medley (2004)
Anytime you find out Prince is performing, you better be there to witness greatness. In 2004, Prince opened the Grammys with Beyonce who was nominated for her first solo Grammys for Dangerously In Love. The two rocked the house with a medley of tracks off Purple Rain to commemorate the 20th anniversary. Besides their showmanship, some of the best performances are the slip ups. Beyonce can’t get her mic to stop falling so she dances away. Prince feels Beyonce is mic hogging, so he takes it from her. Directly after they smash the stage Beyonce won her first solo Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album. How’s that for a good night?!

2.Mary J. Blige – No More Drama (2002)

Watching Mary J. Blige perform “No More Drama” live is like going to a church revival and catching the spirit. You can’t help but to shout right along with Mary. As a voice of a generation’s pain, when MJB decided it was time to leave the drama behind, she did so in dramatic fashion. In fact, there is no best way to describe Mary’s Grammy performance. You just have to watch it and feel it for yourself. I will say when she let go of the nonsense we all had no choice but to believe her.

1. Michael Jackson – The Way You make Me Feel/Man In The Mirror (1988)

There could never be a better Grammy performance than Michael Jackson’s. Only the greatest entertainer ever can begin a performance singing secular music and transition into a gospel tinged pop song without batting an eyelash. When Michael slid into “Man In The Mirror,” he became a slave to the number. How is it possible nobody took any issue with him grabbing his crotch and humping the floor before invoking Jesus in the second half? He’s Michael Jackson, that’s how! Bow down and show your respect!

DeBarge is known from the popular 80s family group, DeBarge. He was arrested for drug charges and assault with a deadly weapon. DeBarge was placed in Administrative Segregation, which is where inmates are housed who are famous or have security problems. Murray has been staying in the Administrative Segregation block since being convicted of manslaughter in connection with Michael Jackson’s death in November.

According to TMZ, the two run into each other randomly. DeBarge and Murray recently ran into one another when meeting with their respective lawyers. DeBarge’s attorney, Spencer Vodnoy says Janet’s ex-husband is very upset residing in the same block with the man who was involved in the death of Michael Jackson. Although Janet and DeBarge were married less than a year, he considered Michael Jackson family.

How about James DeBarge concentrate on staying clean and out of jail before worrying about Conrad Murray’s whereabouts?

I understand and appreciate how much PETA cares for animals. However, they need to have a seat. I don’t see anybody holding a gun to their heads to eat meat or wear any types of leather or fur. They lost me when they decided to start throwing paint on people. If they see me in my fly leather bomber and hit me with red paint, it’s going to take more than lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!) to save them.

In the past, Black actresses were slandered for stepping out with white men. In these “post-racial” times, it’s commonplace to see a black woman with a white man. Black women have decided to stop complaining about black men leaving them for white women when they get an ounce of success. Black women are now playing the interracial dating game without shame. With the recent split of Zoe Saldana and her fiancee, Keith Britton, The Urban Daily decided to offer up a list of eleven starlets who have no issue with bringing a white guy home for the holidays.

Garcelle Beauvais

Known for her roles on The Jamie Foxx Show and NYPD Blue, Garcelle Beauvais married Mike Nilon in 2001. Nilon and Beauvais looked like the perfect couple. Fans sympathized with them as they struggled with infertility for nearly five years. By 2007, the infertility issue was laid to rest as Garcelle gave birth to twins. By the time 2010 came around, the actress and her agent husband were in the headlines after she found out he had been having an affair for five years. Beauvais didn’t get mad, she got even. She embarrassed her husband by emailing his co-workers and detailing his affair. Didn’t Redd Foxx say something about not crossing Creole women in Harlem Nights? I’ll take a guess that Mike Nilon didn’t take that advice.

Diana Ross

The ultimate diva, Diana Ross, has never been shy about dating and marrying white men. If you think about it, her relationships parallel the happenings in her career. Ms. Ross was messing with Berry Gordy when she was recording music with The Supremes. She gave the legendary record executive a daughter in 1971, but gave the child the last name of her white husband, Robert Ellis Silberstein. It wasn’t revealed until years later that Diana’s eldest daughter, Rhonda, was Berry Gordy’s. After divorcing Silberstein in 1977, Diana Ross upgraded herself by trading nuptials with billionaire, Arne Naess, Jr. The power couple parted ways in 2000 and their children use Ross as their surname.

Paula Patton

Paula Patton is one of the sexiest women in the game right now. Plenty of guys are hating that she is married to blue-eyed soul singer, Robin Thicke, instead of them. This is a couple you have no choice but to respect. They met when they were teenagers and remained together through every false start of their respective careers. In a way, Thicke introduced Patton to the world. When he dropped his overlooked debut album, A Beautiful World, it was Paula’s naked body gracing its cover. Thicke expressed his feelings about the drama the couple has endured on the 2008 song, “Dreamworld.” “There would be no black and white, the world just treat my wife right. We could walk down in Mississippi and no one would look at us twice,” he sang. It’s looking like we’re slowly but surely inching toward his dream.

Kerry Washington

When it comes to Kerry Washington’s experiences in the love department, life has imitated art. Washington landed on moviegoers’ radar as Chenille Reynolds in Save The Last Dance. Kerry played the sister of a guy in an interracial relationship. Her character felt some trepidation about her brother’s choice, but grew to accept the relationship. In real life, she was engaged to an actor named David Moscow from 2004 until 2007. It was alleged she was dating with Common once her engagement was broken off. The only evidence of the rapper and actress being together was her appearance in his video for “I Want You.” Would it be considered reaching if we used that as proof? Yes?  We thought so.

Diahann Carroll

There’s no mistaking Diahann Carroll is a treasure in Black Hollywood. She always plays her characters perfectly. Having been married four times, it’s easy to say finding the one hasn’t been a walk in the park. Her most attention grabbing marriage was to singer, Vic Damone. Carroll admitted her marriage to Damone was a turbulent one. They wed in 1987 and legally separated in 1991. The pair attempted a reconciliation soon after, but officially divorced in 1996. Was Dominique Deveraux too much for the Italian-American crooner? Maybe so.

Janet Jackson

In 1989, Janet Jackson dropped an album with the mission to rid the world of color lines and racial boundaries. The notions that drove Rhythm Nation 1814 have manifested themselves in Janet’s love life. After annulling her quickie union to James Debarge in 1985, Jackson married Rene Elizondo Jr. in 1991. The public didn’t discover the couple exchanged vows until Elizondo filed for divorce in 2000. Janet came back to the “dark side” when she began dating hip-hop producer, Jermaine Dupri. Seven years and a creepy tattoo later, Janet was hit by jungle fever again. She’s been involved with Wissam Al Mana for a while now. Damn, there goes my dream of marrying her!

Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg has never been considered the classic beauty. Despite that fact, she has always been able to bag a man. Whoopi entered into an affair with actor, Ted Danson in 1993. Their relationship was marred by a few media firestorms. Danson infamously roasted her at the Friar’s Club dressed in blackface. On top of the negative attention from the comedy roast, Danson and Goldberg’s affair led to Danson’s divorce, which was one of the most expensive divorces of the time. Ted Danson paid $30 million to ex-wife for his few months with Whoopi. She must have a diamond encrusted box. Goldberg must really know what she’s doing behind closed doors.

Rutina Wesley

To True Blood fans, Rutina Wesley is the angry black best friend to the main character, Sookie. Wesley’s introduction in the first episode featured her cussing out a white man for saying her name was pretty. Rutina’s character, Tara, continues to scream on the man by telling him she was named after a plantation. In the real world, Rutina Wesley doesn’t have an issue with a white man trying to spit game. She’s happily married to actor, Jacob Fishel. So much for life imitating art in this scenario.

Stacey Dash

Since entering the acting game, Stacey Dash has covered the walls of every black male teenager born in the 80s. Although Dash had plenty of black men checking for her, those gorgeous green eyes were focused on white guys. Brian Lovell took Dash’s hand in marriage in 1999 and gave it back in 2005. After a brief union with James Maby, Stacey thought she found the one in Emmanuel Xuereb. Their matrimony ended last year with Dash filing a restraining order. Inquiring minds want to know what she does to these guys to make them go so crazy?

Halle Berry

She might be the first Black actress to win the Best Actress Oscar, but she has begun to follow the trend in dating white men. Halle Berry’s love life has been well documented. Berry has been in dead end romances with Wesley Snipes, Christopher Williams, David Justice, Eric Benet, and Michael Ealy. With all of that, it’s no wonder Halle decided to add some milk to her coffee. Gabriel Aubry gave Halle something no man had given her before–a child. Once things went left for those two, French actor, Olivier Martinez became her resident arm candy.

Lena Horne

The legendary Lena Horne is revered for her beauty, grace, and performing abilities. Ms. Horne was also known for her honesty. After a short lived marriage to Louis Jordan Jones, Horne wed music conductor and arranger, Lennie Heyton. In her autobiography, she recounts the struggles they faced as an interracial couple in the 50s and 60s. In an 1980 interview with Ebony Magazine, Ms. Horne spoke about marrying Heyton to gain mainstream attention and learning to love him later. While I don’t condone that kind of thing, she had to get in where she fit in. It was hard out there for a black actress so she gets a pass.

10. Tropical Fantasy
Coming straight out of the BK, Tropical Fantasy won our taste buds over with its cheap price. Being that the bottling company was small, there was very little advertising for the soft drink. Though the hood drink was tasty, fervent rumors would lead to its demise. Gossip of the drink having secret ingredients that would cause men to become sterile spread like wild fire. That misinformation caused people to refer to it as “Tropical Fanticide.” Once talk of the KKK being behind the company only distributing in the inner city, violence happened to stores who sold the refreshment. In other words, our Tropical Fantasy turned into a Tropical Nightmare.

9. Olde English
Olde English malt liquor had been around for decades before gaining headway in urban communities in the eighties and nineties. By that time, there were a variety of sizes. Most of the hood reached for the forty ounce bottle cloaked in a brown paper bag. The height of its fame came in John Singleton’s hood classic, Poetic Justice. When the gang stops for something to quench their thirst, Regina King gets a little indignant about a white liquor store not having the malt beverage. Her actions caused Janet Jackson to scold her, “Girl, you know they don’t sell that outside of the black neighborhoods!” Truer words have yet to be spoken.

8. Cisco
It’s one of the cheapest drinks on the market if you’re trying to get drunk. It’s probably one of the worst when it comes to health. From personal experience, the darker the color of your bottle of ‘Sco, the bigger the hole it left in your liver. Thank heavens I’m not reduced to tolerating that mess anymore. You might not have felt well the day after, but the the party sure felt good when Cisco was in your system. Or was that just me? Don’t front. You know the exact feeling I’m talking bout.

7. Colt 45
Billy Dee Williams was the coolest brother around, back in the day. So when he said to drink Colt 45, you drank Colt 45. His long standing relationship with the company during the Regan Era caused a lot of backlash for the actor. His response to the criticism? “I drink, you drink. Hell, if marijuana was legal, I’d appear in a commercial for that too.” So Black America was left with a choice, just say no or do what Billy Dee said. Needless to say, Colt 45 made a lot of money in its heyday. By the way, that extra kick it advertised having was not a game.

6. St. Ides
During the golden years of Hip Hop, St. Ides was the malt liquor of choice. Mainly because rappers of that time were placed in the ads. Method Man & Redman guzzled the drink. As did Cypress Hill and other rap acts. Chuck D famously sued the manufacturing company for using his voice without permission for one of their commercials. He had taken a stand against the slinging of malt liquor to the black community. Although many rappers appreciated its taste, the biggest name check came from Common in his evisceration of Ice Cube on “The Bitch In Yoo.” He clowned O’Shea Jackson for being hypocritical with the line, “Hypocrite, I’m filling out your death certificate/Slanging bean pies and St. Ides in the same sentence.” Damn, Common, why you had to do him like that?

5. C&C Soda
For years, residents of the inner city have speculated what the two C’s stood for. No matter what you thought the reason was, that fact still remains they are “cold” and “cheap”. Costing a measly fifty cents, C&C soda was in more hoods than crack cocaine and weed combined. Junkies couldn’t always afford to get a fix of dope, but there was hope in finding loose change to sip on one of these chilled carbonated concoctions.

4. E&J
Good ole Easy Jesus. That’s what most people in New Jersey called it. Back when you had to use a fake I.D. to get liquored up, this was the libation of choice. Cheaper than other brandys, E&J was the blame for a great deal of reckless behavior. The term “coyote ugly” came from a woman who had drank too much E&J one night and slept with a man she found to be disgusting. She felt she’d rather gnaw her arm off than risk waking the guy up. That’s coyote ugly and that’s why most people over the age of 21 don’t drink it anymore.

3. 4 Loko
When you’re a company and your product gets banned, you know two things; 1)Energy drinks and alcohol don’t mix and 2)put in the wrong hands, it can be deadly. From the accounts I’ve heard, after drinking a 4 Loko, people have urinated on themselves in public without shame. They’ve also passed out in the most random places, like a snow bank in the middle of a police parking lot. If that’s what 4 Loko is all about, I’m good.

2. Hennessy
Henny has been the street pharmacist’s poison since its inception in the seventies. You can thank the younger hip hop heads for the resurgence of interest in Hennessy. When 2pac was alive he wrote a song called, “Hennessy.” He said the drink represented the thug lifestyle. If you aren’t a thug, you aren’t missing much with this cognac. You heard of the adage, “Less is more.” They had to have had Henny in mind.

1. Quarter Waters
When talking about drinks in the hood, how could quarter waters not get a mention?! More sugary than the Kool-Aid your auntie with Diabetes makes it and cheaper than anything else in the bodegas, quarter waters became an instant favorite. Distributed in various colors, your tongue would change to the color of whatever flavor you sampled. The only problem with the hood favorite was the sharp plastic. You had to drink those things in two swallows as not to risk slicing your lips. Why does something so good have to be so dangerous?

It goes without saying that Kanye West, who celebrated a birthday yesterday, is one of hip-hop’s greatest producers.

Taking a cue from the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, Kanye’s early work featured a lot samples from classic soul records from the 1970s.  Artists from Jay-Z to Janet Jackson used Kanye’s soul sampling beats.

Built around a few samples from The Main Ingredient’s “Let Me Prove My Love To You,” Alicia Keys got her third top 10 single in the US with this song from her second album.

T3 and Elzhi of Slum Village teamed up with Kanye and John Legend on this track that samples Aretha Franklin’s classic piano ballad, “Call Me.”

Twista “Overnight Celebrity”

Kanye gave this beat to his fellow Chicago hometown hero, Twista.  “Overnight Celebrity” uses a sample of Lenny Williams’ “‘Cause I Love You.”

Scarface “Guess Who’s Back” (feat. Jay-Z & Beanie Sigel)

Kanye produced this single from Scarface’s critically acclaimed 2002 album, The Fix.  The song samples Motown’s vocal group The Originals and their song “Sunrise.”

Kanye West “Spaceship” (feat. G.L.C. & Consequence)

Kanye’s tale about being a disgruntled employee at The Gap features a sample of Marvin Gaye’s classic balad “Distant Lover.”

Janet Jackson “I Want You”

This single from Janet’s Damita Jo album features a sample of B.T. Express’ cover of The Carpenters’ AM radio staple “(They Long To Be) Close To You.”

Nas “Poppa Was A Playa”

Although credited to Kanye’s mentor, Deric Angelettie (aka The Mad Rapper), Kanye actually ghostproduced this track from Nas’ The Lost Tapes album that samples Eddie Kendricks’ “The Newness Is Gone.”

Janet Jackson brought down the house on last night’s American Idol finale with a three-song performance that reminded many viewers why her brother Michael gave her the nickname “Dunk.”

After leading off with the ballads “Again” and “Nothing” (from Why Did I Get Married Too?), Janet revealed a skin tight black catsuit that highlighted all of her curvy assets (pun definitely intended).

I’ve always had a problem with Tyler Perry. Not the man, mind you – he’s always seemed like a fairly generous, warm-hearted guy – but the “performer.” I say performer instead of artist or talent because I don’t believe he is either of those. He performs. He is theatrical in virtually every way, and I would argue, the worst way.

His characters don’t speak their lines so much as project them as if they’re trying to be heard in the back row of a playhouse. This may make for entertaining theater but it’s deadly on a big screen where a little dose of subtlety can do wonders.

Maybe it was the fact that he felt the need to brand everything he does with his own name. Or that he insists on perpetuating the played-out comic conceit that the best way to portray middle-aged black women is to put a man in drag and have him traffic in the worst, most clichéd stereotypes. His trademark character, Madea, always struck me as a garish monstrosity. Sure, she delivers homespun wisdom but she’s also quick to resort to pulling out a gun if words won’t do.

His latest film, a sequel to Why Did I Get Married, revisits four affluent couples (which include veteran actors like Malik Yoba, Michael Jai White and Sharon Leal, as well as pop stars Janet Jackson and Jill Scott) from the previous Perry film who, for completely contrived reason, go on a retreat in the Bahamas once a year to revel in their dysfunction and reminisce about why they got married in the first place. You’ll be wondering that yourself as these four incredibly uncharismatic couples alternate between deceiving and demonizing each other endlessly for two hours.
