A lot of times, people fall in love with songs and don’t really pay attention to the lyrics.

Later on they realize that their favorite song isn’t about what they thought it was. For example, how many weddings have you been to and heard the wedding DJ play Earth Wind & Fire’s “Reasons,” a song which just happens to be about cheating.

Not exactly wedding reception material.

Anyway, The following batch of songs all tend to have a sexual predator theme to them, split between statutory rape fantasies and what could be considered sexual assault.

Major Harris “Love Won’t Let Me Wait”

This sneaky lil tune has delighted lovers since it was first performed by Major Harris in the early ’70s,  but on closer inspection, the lyrics seem a little non-consensual, if you will…

EVIDENCE:  “I refuse to leave ’til I see the morning sun.” “Move a little close to me, you owe it to yourself / And I will selfishly take a little for myself”

Keith Sweat “Right And A Wrong Way”

Keith Sweat’s ode to statutory rape features the singer trying to charm the panties off a young girl, and while her age is never explicitly stated in the song, considering Keith’s age at the time of this song’s release (26), it’s probably safe to assume that she was probably on the wrong side of 18. Guess Keith is still trying to figure out the right and wrong way to love somebody.

EVIDENCE: “You may be young but you’re ready / Ready to learn / You’re not a little girl you’re a woman”

Jamie Foxx “Blame It”

This song caused a little controversy in the office. I’m convinced that this song is the prelude to some sick date rape fantasy Jamie Foxx had as he continues to get this unnamed girl liquored up on vodka and Hennessey (never mix light and dark liquors!!). Others in the office aren’t convinced, but let’s take a look at the evidence…

EVIDENCE: “She said she usually don’t / But I know that she front,” ”I ain’t saying what you wanna do / but you know we probly gon’ do,” “Ooh see, she spilled some drink on me / and now I’m knowing she tipsy”

Rick James “Give It To Me Baby”

Rick “Super Freak” James may have been a very influential musician, but were any of us really shocked when he and his girlfriend went to jail for kidnapping a woman and forcing her to perform sex acts as they burned her with a crack pipe?  He warned us of all of this back on one of his biggest hits, “Give It To Me Baby,” a song about Rick coming home from the club drunk and high and his woman not wanting to give him that “funky stuff.”

EVIDENCE: “Give it to me baby / I betcha I’ll make you holler you’ve had enough,”

Don Blackman “Holding You, Loving You”

This song was a favorite of mine for years before I actually paid attention to the lyrics and realized that dude is in love with a 17 year old and wants to marry her.  While 17 may be the age of consent in some locations…….. nah, fam.

EVIVDENCE: “The lady’s only 17 / Some people think she’s too young / They say her life has just begun.”

Bell Biv DeVoe “Do Me!”

There was a very good reason why my parents wouldn’t allow me to sing this song around the house, and I thought it was just because the song was about sex.  While that was a factor, I’m certain the fact that part of the song deals with smackin up, flippin, and rubbing down the derriere of an underaged groupie had more to do with it.

EVIDENCE: “Backstage / Underaged / Adolescent / How you doin? / Fine / She replied ‘Hi’ sighed ‘I like to do the wild thing.’”

Rick James “17″

Yet another entry from Rick James, and another entry about an encounter with a 17 year old girl.  Fortunately for Rick, he doesn’t give in to temptation, though it’s clear throughout the song that he wants to smash.

EVIDENCE: “This young girl / This sweet thing / I just cant wait / No I shouldn’t do this / She’s almost jail bait”

Aaron Hall “Don’t Be Afraid”

It never occurred to me until right now that this song starts out with a prayer.  Why are you praying Aaron?  Because you know that the song you’re about to sing is rather rapey?  On “Don’t Be Afraid,” Aaron Hall talks about taking a girl’s virginity and not necessarily being nice about it.  And when she fights back?  It turns him on!  WTF??!

EVIDENCE: “Let it happen right now / Don’t be afraid, girl,” “No need to run and no need to hide / All the doors are locked baby and I have you inside / You can yell and you can hit me / It just makes me horny”

Back in the 90′s boy band and girl groups could actually sing, rappers actually had well-thought out lyrics, and soloist could “blow.” Now-a-days if you’re good looking enough, you can get a record deal. Some of the best music was made in the 90′s and if acts like Mary J. Blidge and P.Diddy can carry a career on into the um 10′s then why can’t these acts?

Kima, Keisha and Pam made up TOTAL, the girl group with vocals to match a hood swag. Signed to Bad Boy around 94′ Total came out swinging with their first single “Can’t You See,”  and followed up with “Kissin’ You.” Total laced tracks for Biggie Smalls, LL Cool J,Foxy Brown, and Missy Elliot. Their debut album went certified platinum but they fell off the radar after their second album. In normal Bad Boy fashion Total disappeared at the peak of their careers. Bring em’ back Diddy!

Being booed on Amateur Night at the Apollo would probably shy most away from ever performing again, but not Lauryn Hill. Lauryn kept on, and eventually won five Grammy’s, one of them being : Album Of The Year. Hill was dissatisfied with the music industry, and sort of exiled herself. She sought out other ways to express herself, like clothing lines, plays and poems. We can’t be mad, the industry is shady, but we’re hopeful for a comeback!

Marc Nelson, Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman, Michael McCary, Wanya Morris made up Boys 2 Men. Based on sales, Boys 2 Men is the most successful R&B male group ever! Bigger than that stat, are their amazing voices. They started out on the legendary Motown Records with 5 members but before the money even got a chance to roll in, Marc Nelson left the group. Boys 2 Men may be a little old seasoned but who cares?!

R.L Huggar, Terry Brown, and Raphael Brown make-up Next. Next’s single “Too Close” was labeled BillBoards number 1 single of the year, a high honor for a debuting black male group. They continued on with the classics “Butta Love” and “Wifey” but fell out of the public eye shortly after. Next could be found serenading Jaheims “Anything.” I’d give about half of anything to have them back!

Sure Keith Sweat’s voice may have annoyed some, and maybe even sent cats into a stir but women couldn’t resist his sexy lyrics and charm. Even though Keith Sweat is on an old head tour, I’d like to hear a 2010 album from him.
