She may only be 12-years-old, but Selah Marley, the daughter of Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley is ready to start her career as a model. She was previously featured in Teen Vogue, but she’s looking to do more in the fashion world.

In addition to working in front of the camera, Selah aspires to be a singer, just like her mother and her legendary grandfather Bob Marley.

What can be said about The Roots that hasn’t already been said? Everyone knows they are the go to band for rappers wanting to experiment with live instrumentation. Need we remind you of their performances with Jay-Z for his Unplugged show in 2001 and his Fade to Black concert film? The Philadelphia bred hip-hop musicians are posted behind Hov.

Though many know the drummer, Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, for his wild afro, some might not know dude has a serious record collection. Some might even venture to say he’s drifting into hoarding territory. The Urban Daily spoke with Questo yesterday where we discussed his support for Occupy Wall Street, the new Roots album, and why Black Thought should sing more often.

TUD: I’m excited to do this interview because if there was any musician’s music collection I would want to raid, it would be yours. I feel like you have every record known to man. Your apartment must be full of records.

QL: My library is just so overwhelming that a lot of people would love to raid my music collection. I have some property in Philadelphia and one of the main criteria for moving out of that house was I was always running out of space. Plus, when Q-Tip had a fire back in ’97, that scared me. I thought about getting another house for my records. One of the setbacks of having an apartment in Manhattan is I’m far away from my record collection. A little bit at a time I’m sneaking records to my apartment and I find myself getting back into dangerous territory.

That’s not really dangerous territory. It’s just a lot.

You don’t know me, bro. Guests that are frequent are like, “Okay, this used to be where the dining room table was.” Now, it’s become a turntable station.

See, that sounds like a good time to me. I love places like that.

Yeah, I love it too. That’s not sexy when your girl comes over though.

That’s true. I hear The Roots are working on an exclusive track for the upcoming Captain Morgan ‘Life Love and Loot’ campaign. How did you guys link up?

They approached us about doing music for the campaign and the thing was having been familiar with the visual campaign, the challenge was to make the song match the visual. When you think of pirates and the sea, the normal Roots backdrop of music isn’t necessarily what comes to mind. They told us we could take the liberty to make a song we wanted. The Roots wanted to make sure we stepped out of our comfort zone to fit the spirit of the campaign. The real challenge was having to make this song with only three instruments-a guitar, tuba, and a drum.

Did you guys come up with the track jam session style, like a lot of your records are known for?

Absolutely. We prepared for three days. We tried seven or eight different sketches of the song. Once we came up with the sketches, we played them for our Captain Morgan liaison and he decided he liked one over the others. Then, we went into the studio and fleshed it out. It took about eight takes to get it right.

Was is it a conscious decision to have Black Thought sing instead of rap on this song?

It wasn’t in the beginning, but because of the nature of the song, just to yell out the lyrics didn’t feel natural. Since he is a singer as well…it’s kind of hard for me to coax him to sing. I don’t know why he’s shy about it, but Black Thought sings as good as he raps. That’s always been a head scratcher for me as to why he won’t get his male Lauryn Hill on. I told him it would sound much more natural with him singing it as opposed to him rhyming it. He did both and the singing does have better energy than him not singing and that’s what we went with.

Will the Captain Morgan track be available for download?

Yes. It will be available for download on the Captain Morgan USA Facebook page. People can also see the making of it there. They can see some clips and photos of us recording it and jamming out.

When you heard about the whole ‘Life Love and Loot’ campaign, what did you take away from it? What did it mean to you?

We decided that the campaign is pretty much our thing. I guess that would make us pirates too. [laughs] We had to put ourselves in that position and define it for ourselves. If anything, we’ve been pirates too. We’re always on the road, always working to survive, and loving what we do. We’re also running a business. That’s what so many people tend to forget because we’re having so much fun doing what we do. We run a very tight business as well. But usually when we are given a set of perimeters, we just put ourselves in that position and see how it applies to us.

The Roots have a new album, undun, coming out soon. Does the sound d of this Captain Morgan track reflect the sound you’re working with on the album?

Nah. We finished our record at 4:30 this morning. It’s being mastered right now. We actually did this track at the same time we recorded our album and one of the advantages of doing this track was it provided us a relief because the sound of the album is very somber and serious. There really wasn’t a high adrenaline moment on the album. Doing this on the side kind of scratched that itch for us.

Besides being on Jimmy Fallon, the new album, and the song for the ‘Life Love and Loot’ campaign, what are you guys doing to stay busy?

That’s a big list you just gave right there. [laughs] I heard it myself and was like, “Whoa! When am I going to sleep?!” We’re really trying to focus on the album. Fallon is everyday so there’s no escaping that, but our priority is with the new album, undun.

The Roots have worked with a very wide range of artists. Who haven’t you worked with that you want to work with?

I’ll be honest with you. As far as the studio is concerned, John Legend and D’Angelo are the two artists under the age of 50 I enjoy working with. I enjoy working with Erykah Badu whenever she wants to collaborate. As of late, I’ve been having a ball doing these soul records. As soon as Al Green gives us the word, we’ll probably work on his next record. We just did Betty Wright’s record. Her album comes out in December also. It sounds incredible.

The Roots have always been more of a politically conscious band. What are your thoughts on the whole Occupy Wall Street movement?

Yeah, I’ve been down there a few times to support them. It’s taken 99% of the people long enough to finally wake up and see the power that they hold in their hands. A lot of people think revolution and change will be the next man’s fight. They want to hang back and see what happens and it doesn’t work that way. You’ve got to get your hands and knees inside the mud. You have to be apart of the change you want to see. We’ll see what happens because this is just the beginning.

If you go see Lauryn Hill in concert hoping to hear her greatest hits, you may be disappointed, because most of them sound NOTHING like the original. At this year’s New York stop of Rock The Bells, Lauryn acknowledged the criticism and said, “You always hear people saying things like, ‘she does the old music but she doesn’t do it the old way.”

So why does she do it? ”When I get onstage and I’m in front of you, my heartbeats go faster,” Lauryn explained. “So sometimes we’ve got to bring these tempos up so I can move a little faster.”

Performing a song hundreds of time can get redundant for an artist, and part of the live experience of seeing an artist in concert is getting a modified version of the music. But most of Lauryn Hills songs are borderline unrecognizable in concert.

She transforms a mid-tempo masterpiece into a mess by changing the arrangement and making it almost unrecognizable.

At the 2010 edition of Rock The Bells in New York On Governor’s Island, Lauryn Hill brought Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige onstage. This year she brought out some personal guests when the tour stopped in the northeast: her kids! Since there were five children, it seems like all of these are hers, but the oldest girl doesn’t look like Lauryn’s eldest Selah, and some of the others do look familiar. Check out the photo gallery below to see all of the kids who appeared onstage at Rock The Bells ’11 as she performed songs from her classic debut album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.”

Professional guitar player Jay Gore filed a new lawsuit against Lauryn Hill, claiming that the singer was verbally abusive to her band members during her European tour in 2007.

According to TMZ Hill “exhibited the type of behavior for which she had gained public notoriety which contributed to a hostile work environment…At one point, Hill made a statement in front of the tour personnel to the effect that ‘I can’t believe I am paying you fools, you should be paying me.”

Gore is suing for $20,000 also claiming that he was not paid for his work. He was originally seeking $3,590 in an earlier filing last month.

Lauryn Hill gave birth to her sixth child this past Saturday after keeping the mysterious pregnancy a secret for months. Confusion set in when long-time lover Rohan Marley allegedly abandoned Hill for a Brazilian model and refuted our assumptions that he wasn’t the father of her recently born son. Lauryn Hill attempted to set the record straight with a statement released via Twitter but failed to do anything more than further confuse her audience.

Mr. Marley and I have a long complex history about which MANY inaccuracies have been reported since the beginning. To speculate without the facts can only cause people to form WRONG conclusions. We both value privacy and for that reason defend and preserve our right to it. Contrary to the numerous reports, Mr. Marley did not abandon me while pregnant with his child. We have had long periods of separation over the years but our 5 children together remain a joy to both of us. Thank you for your concern and I appreciate all of the well wishes regarding the birth of my new son.

If I am correct Lauryn has a total of 6 children. Is it or is it not Rohan Marley’s son?

Lauryn Hill, born Lauryn Noelle Hill, on May 26, 1975 in East Orange, New Jersey loved music from the beginning thanks to her parents’ love of music. Lauryn’s first big break was in high school when she was a part of The Refugee Camp, better know as the Fugees.

The Fugees included then boyfriend, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michael. Lauryn caught the world’s attention with her voice in, Killing Me Softly With His Song. Wyclef and Lauryn dated until 1993 and in 1996 Lauryn started dating Rohan Marley, son of Bob Marley. Lauryn and Rohan started a family immediately.

Around the same time, Lauryn had started her acting career and appeared on the soap opera, As The World Turns. She also appeared in the movies, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, Charlie’s Angels and more.

To this day, Lauryn still performs. She performed at the Coachella Valley Music Festival in the spring of 2011 and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on May 13. Rohan and Lauryn are still dating and now have six kids together. Lauryn gave birth to their sixth child just a few days ago.

Congratulations to Lauryn Hill (aka Ms. Hill if you are not worthy). After keeping her pregnancy a secret for seven months, she shared the news with her fans in June via an open letter. This past Saturday she finally gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Early reports said that Lauryn had some complications during birth, with the umbilical cord being wrapped around the baby’s neck. But a close source to the family told Black Celeb Kids, “All is well now and everyone is happy.”

Rohan Marley has moved on from Lauryn Hill and got himself a model. Lauryn Hill announced she was having her sixth child in June and everyone assumed Rohan Marley was the father. Until he took to his twitter page to let everyone know he was not the father and had no clue Lauryn was expecting a child. He is now with Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana and the two are in love. Isabeli tweeted, “I’m in love with @RoMarley’s Heart” along with a twitpic of the two. Looks like Rohan left Lauryn for a white girl to me. Check out the photo gallery below.

Well, it looks like Ms. Hill has decided to tell her fans all around the world about it in an open letter. Lauryn penned a letter thanked her fans for their support, while she takes time to off and even addressed arriving late to performances. Lauryn Hill announced that she was pregnant with her sixth child over the weekend. Everyone assumed Lauryn is pregnant by Rohan Marley and the blogs has been buzzing about the fact that he is still legally married to Geraldine Kwaley. I guess we all thought wrong, Rohan says the baby isn’t his. Someone asked Rohan if he was having another baby via twitter. He responded, “not that I knows of.” He later tweeted, “What a wonderful place, We have a platform to correct the incorrect.” This is just becoming one big mess but what I really want to know is, Lauryn when are we going to get another album. Lauryn Hill Announces She’s Pregnant At Detroit Show

According to our sister site Hothiphopdetroit.com, Lauryn Hill has a really good excuse for being late to her recent shows. Despite being over an hour and a half tardy to her show at Chene Park in Detroit, L-Boogie ended her set by announcing she is pregnant!

Hill began dropping hints that she was having another child as recently as April. During her “Moving Target: Extended Playdate Series” at Club Nokia in Los Angeles she teased the audience by saying, “I keep having these children. I don’t know if I’m the most fertile woman in America.” Ms. Hill currently has five children with her boyfriend Rohan Marley: Zion(b.1997); Selah(b. 1998); Joshua Marley(b. 2002); John Marley(b. 2003); and Sarah(b.2008).

Hill did not say how far along she is in her pregnancy.

Lauryn Hill Announces MORE Tour Dates For The Spring

Ms. Lauryn Hill has announced a string of tour dates for the spring. The former Fugee will be continuing her “Moving Target: Extended Playdate Series” tour on March 16th in Orlando and wrapping things up on May 7th at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festival.

Lauryn Hill‘s recent concert in Atlanta started three hours late and was full of new arrangements of her classic songs that fans were unable to recognize. Hill recently sent the city an apology via Twitter.

Marsha Ambrosius “Lose Myself” (Lauryn Hill Cover) [AUDIO]

In 2007, a new song by Lauryn Hill called “Lose Myself” appeared on the soundtrack to the animated film Surfs Up. In 2011, Marsha Ambrosius has revived the song and included it on her solo debut, Late Nights & Early Mornings.

The two versions of the song have completely different feels. Lauryn’s version is upbeat with a little bit of a retro-60s-surf-rock vibe. Marsha’s version is slower and seems more fitting to the song’s subject matter.

Marsha Ambrosius’ “Late Nights & Early Mornings” Tracklist Revealed

The final tracklist for Marsha Ambrosius‘ Late Nights & Early Mornings album has been revealed. The album is the solo debut for the former Floetry member and reportedly features writing and production from Just Blaze, Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys in addition to Ambrosius herself.

Late Nights & Early Mornings hits stores on February 22nd.

Snoop And 50 Cent Taking Over Sundance Film Festival

The 10-day long Sundance Film Festival will have a distinctly hip-hop flavor in 2011. Scores of entertainers will converge in Park City, Utah from January 20th to the 30th for the largest independent film festival in the world. In addition to a dinner hosted by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Floyd Mayweather, there will be performances by The Roots, Lauryn Hill and Snoop Dogg.

Mayweather and 50 Cent will be announcing a partnership for film projects through Jackson’s Cheetah Vision Films, which has secured $200 million in financing to and has already produced several movies. For anyone who cares, it’s rumored that 50 Cent’s gal pal Chelsea Handler will be joining him as well.

Another film drawing pre-festival buzz is music documentary “Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest,” directed by Michael Rapaport. Despite reports that Q-Tip was not in support of the film, the group is on the schedule to attend the premiere.

Over the past twelve years, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival has made a name for itself by attracting the best acts in all genres of music. In the last few years, the annual festival has had superstars like Paul McCartney, Madonna, and Prince headline the festival, with other big names like Jay-Z and Radiohead also headlining. This year, the festival has booked Kanye West to close out the three day festival in California.

In addition to Yeezy, a handful of other R&B and hip-hop acts will also appear at the festival including Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Raphael Saadiq, Nas & Damian Marley, Cee-Lo Green, Tinie Tempah, Wiz Khalifa, Lil B and the Based Gods, OFWGKTA, and DJ A-Trak.

Wyclef Says Fugees Are “Not Meant To Be”

Although rap star Wyclef Jean and ex-bandmate Pras Michel have settled their differences, fans will be disappointed to know that a reunion of The Fugees will never happen, according to Jean.

As The Fugees, the group put out two albums, including The Score, which has sold over 20 million records worldwide. They broke up in 1997 for successful solo careers and re-united briefly in 2004.

“When it comes to Lauryn and Pras, it’s my childhood, they always bring me to that place,” Wyclef told the BBC. “At the end of the day Pras is my brother and Lauryn is my sister, despite what the media say. The Fugees are not meant to be. We’re rock stars from a locked group. You’re going to have egos and differences but at the end of the day I love them both very much.”
