This duet produced by Kanye West featured samples from Tupac and Prince.  Released in 2002, the single hit number 4 on the U.S. Billboard hot 100, becoming Beyonce’s first top ten single as a solo artist.

9-A Tribe Called Quest- “Bonita Applebum”- The leading single off People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm album. The track was rumored to be about a girl the crew wen to high school with.

8-The Roots ft. Eve & Erykah Badu- “You Got Me”- Off the 1999 “Things Fall Apart” album, co- written by Jill Scott who recorded vocals for the chorus as well. The label wanted a big feature and being that Jill was not known at the time, Erykah Badu was called in to feature on the track.

7-Whodini- One Love- One of three singles released off the platinum 1986 “Back In Black” album. “One Love” had become a universal phrase and helped the group obtain a platinum plaque for this album. Even almost a decade later on Nas’ “One Love” the phrase was being used and had even become a way to greet someone or say goodbye.

6-OutKast- Ms Jackson- The second single off their 2000 release “Stankonia” album which debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200, and sold over 500k its first week. The hit was rumored to be a response to Erykah Badu’s mother after Andre 3000 and Erykah broke up. The song is about what couples go through and the feelings a mother can have against their daughters ex-husband/boyfriend.

5-DMX ft. Faith Evans- How its Goin’ Down- The third single off  DMX’s debut album “It’s Dark and Hell is Hot” . The single was a hit in my opinion because if you were from the hood and in love you could relate to the plot. How many of you had to steal your current love away from their girlfriend/boyfriend?

4-LL Cool J- I Need Love- The second single from LL’s second album “Bigger and Deffer.” “I need Love” was considered the first rap ballad hitting number 1 on the hot r&b/hip hop charts. It was also one of the first rap songs to see mainstream success in the UK. LL also won a Soul Train Music Award for the single.

3-Slick Rick Teenage Love- The first single off Slick Rick’s 1988 debut album “The Great Adventures of Slick Rick,” produced by the Bomb Squad. Taking the number 16 spot on Hot Black Singles and 8 on Hot rap singles, it was a hit and would be followed by a bigger hit “Children’s Story.”

2-The Fugees- Killing Me Softly- The original by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel is a track that had been covered by many artists. Roberta Flack had topped the pop charts and won a Grammy covering the track. The Fugees later released in 1996 off The Fugees multi-platinum, Grammy award winning album “The Score”.  The cut had climbed to the number 2 spot on Us Airplay charts. Sampling A Tribe Called Quest Bonita AppleBum,  Lauryn Hill singing the lead vocals secured her top spot in Hip hop.

1-Method Man & Mary J Blige- Your All I Need- Originally recorded by R&B/Soul duo Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell, this hip hop classic just may be the most memorable hip hop love song in history. It could also be argued the most successful rap/r&b duo to date. Method Man and Mary told the love story of many of us who come from the hood and the music video captured the story perfect. A Puff Daddy remix was later created which sampled a track from The Notorious BIG’s “Me & My Bitch” as well as a “Razor Sharp Mix” produced by the RZA.

Lady Gaga performed her new single “Born This Way “ for the first time with freakishly real, abnormal shoulders, makeup and transparent outfit. Not to mention she pulled up to the Grammys in an egg?!

With 14 Grammy nominations between them, B.O.B, Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae took to the stage performing one of the biggest songs of 2010—“Nothing On You.” While B.O.B looked like the man from the Monopoly box, Janelle stole the show with her natural beauty and signature bouffant singing “Cold War”

Bruno Mars and his charming smile sang his little heart out in a black and white Smokey Robinson reminiscent performance.

Footage of the first meeting between Usher and Justin Beiber graced the screens of millions to cheese over. It was followed by a corny acting session between the two on stage. With Usher crowning the 53^rd Grammys as Beibers “time” Justin hit the first note on his guitar singing “Baby.” A couple of martial art moves later Beibs was joined on stage by Jaden Smith(who was wearing leopard jeans). Will and Jada were in the crowd smiling proudly and singing along to their son’s verse on “Never Say Never”

Justin joined Usher on stage for the same dance routine we have been seeing ever since “OMG” first came out. None-the-less it was the best performance I’ve seen from Usher in a long time!

Lady Gaga took home the Grammy for Pop Vocal Album over Beibs, Katy Perry and John Mayer. She surprisingly thanked Whitney Houston for inspiring her to write her new single “Born This Way.”

The Teddy Pendergrass tribute was sort of suspect, probably because it was performed by a white trio with guitars.

Jamie Foxx introduced Cee Lo Green but didn’t warn us that he would be wearing a costume that looked like it was designed by Missy Elliot, a 300 Spartan and showgirl. Though dressed like a gay chicken, Cee Lo’s performance was highly invigorating to an otherwise boring award show. Gwyneth Paltrow made an appearance wearing a jumpsuit with secy Louboutin’s and proved that she can actually sing before humping the piano.

Cee Lo and Eminem lost Song Of The Year to Lady Antebellum.

Seth Rogen joked about getting high with Miley Cyrus before introducing Rihanna, Dr. Dre and Eminem. Rihanna kicked her Side-Show Bob hairstyle for a sleek bob and paper bag dress. There was a slight technical difficulty with Eminem’s mic as Rihanna seductively walked to him from across the room. Dr Dre shortly made his highly anticipated debut which was as overrated as Eminem’s “Love The Way You Lie” song.

Esperenza robbed Drake and Justin Bieber of Best New Artist.

Finally Nicki Minaj showed her face, along-side Will.I.Am to present the award for Rap Album which Eminem snatched early for his work on “Recovery.” He thanked Rihanna for helping propel his album to such heights and bigged up Detroit.

Beyonce looked amazing as usual, although they only showed a glimpse of her.

P.Diddy looked absolutely ridiculous with gold fronts introducing Ri Ri and Drizzy. Rihanna heated up the stage,literally(cue the Illuminati rumors) and even got Drake to bust a wine during “What’s My Name.”

Record Of The Year went to Lady Antebellum and beat out Cee Lo, Jay-Z, and Eminem…very upsetting!

Album Of The Year went to…The Suburbs

P.S-Jay-Z and Lil’ Wayne were nowhere to be found.

All in all, I fell asleep three times during the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards it was completely BORING!

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys need to retire “Empire State Of Mind” and performance of the night went to Cee Lo Green and Gwyneth Paltrow followed by Rihanna and Drake! I know exactly what the awards could have used; a performance by…Chris Brown!

Casey’s Top 10 Movies Of 2010

The Hall of Fame nominations list were released this morning and include such black music luminaries as disco queen Donna Summer, soul singer Joe Tex, girl-group singer Darlene Love, pioneering R&B singer Chuck Willis, and the legendary disco/funk band Chic.

Also on the ballot for this year are The Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Neil Diamond, Laura Nyro, Donovan, Dr. John, and The J. Geils Band.

Artists are eligible for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after their first single or album.  Over 500 music industry professionals vote on the nominees.  Winners will be announced in December, with the induction ceremony to happen on March 14, 2011 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.

The hip-hop ballad has been a problem since LL Cool J popularized it in 1987 with “I Need Love.”  Over the years, a handful of artists have been able to make respectable hip-hop ballads. However, for the most part, most hip-hop artists have failed.

Here are 9 of the worst hip-hop ballads ever released!

9. dead prez “Mind Sex”

My hatred of this song has always been a bit controversial.  dead prez burst on the scene in the early 2000s with their pro-black revolutionary but gangsta steeze.  Sure, the songs weren’t bad, but I always felt something was off about these guys.  Of course, years later I would move to NYC and hear all sorts of stories about their penchant for white girls, which sorta explains why this song exists.  No self-respecting black woman, no matter how much nag champa she burned in her dorm room in 2000, would fall for some of the lines these guys spit in this song.  Salads and croutons as aphrodisiac?

8. Redhead Kingpin & The FBI “Nice & Slow”

I struggled with putting this song on the list.  I actually used to like this song.  A lot.  But being 30 years old as opposed to 11 when it dropped makes for a bit of a difference.  I still like Redhead’s “Do The Right Thing” and “Pump It Hottie” though.   Word to David Guppy.

7. Doc Box & B. Fresh “Slow Love”

Doc Box & B. Fresh failed to make much of an impact during their very brief run in the early 90s.  Their biggest success came from their guest spot on Joyce “Fenderella” Irby’s “She’s Not My Lover,” but they were replaced by Damon Wayans in the song’s video.  “Slow Love” is a bit of a classic for those who were around to catch it when it dropped, but it hasn’t aged well at all.

6. MC Hammer “Have You Seen Her”

MC Hammer ruined several classics on his Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em album.  His unfortunate reinterpretation of The Chi-Lites’ classic “Have You Seen Her” is easily one of the worst hip-hop ballads ever recorded.

5. MC Brains “Brainstorming” (feat. Boyz II Men)

Part of Michael Bivins’ East Coast Family along with Boyz II Men and Another Bad Creation, MC Brains tried his hand at singing on this song from his debut album, Lovers Lane.  Bad move.

4. Mase  “Jealous Guys” (feat. 112)

Speaking of Michael Bivins, Mase’s version of New Edition’s classic “Jealous Girl” was nothing but embarassing, albeit funny to listen to.

3. LL Cool J “One Shot At Love

After the success of “I Need Love” LL Cool J decided that more slow jams were what his albums needed.  Found on his third album, Walking With A Panther, “One Shot At Love” attempts to recapture the magic of “I Need Love.”

It didn’t work.

2. Big Daddy Kane & Barry White “All Of Me”

You would think that Big Daddy Kane, being the ladies man he is/was in the early 90s, teaming up with the Walrus of Love, Barry White would result in a song that would automatically make panties fall to the ground.  Not the case.  This song is almost single-handedly credited with derailing Big Daddy Kane’s career.  Most hip-hop fans haven’t been able to take Kane seriously since this song and video came out.

1. LL Cool J “You’re My Heart”

This is not only the worst hip-hop ballad ever, but the worst song in LL Cool J’s catalog…. maybe even the worst song in all of hip-hop.

Michael Jackson “Carousel”

The full version of this song is kinda difficult to come by… legally.  A snippet was included on the 2001 remaster of Thriller (the song was intended for the album, but ultimately replaced by “Human Nature”). However, the full version was eventually released only on a special edition of the French version of his 2008 King Of Pop compilation.  The King Of Pop compilation received diffeent tracklists in each country it was released in, and fans in each country voted for the tracklist.  Only the French were smart enough to ask for the full version of this gem.

Michael Jackson & Freddie Mercury “State Of Shock”

Michael Jackson worked with Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, off and on from 1981 to 1983.  One of the songs they recorded together was an early version of “State Of Shock.”  The song was eventually reworked in 1984 for The Jacksons’ Victory album and Mercury was replaced by Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones.

Dave Mason “Save Me”

In 1980, rocker Dave Mason teamed up with Michael for this duet from his Old Crest On A New Wave album.  The Jackson 5 frequently covered Mason’s composition “Feelin’ Alright” in concert.

Michael Jackson “Love Never Felt So Good”

Michael Jackson wrote this song with Paul Anka and Kathy Wakefield and recorded this sparse vocal and piano demo.  The song was eventually recorded and released by Johnny Mathis on his 1984 album, A Special Part Of Me.

Michael Jackson & LL Cool J “Serious Effect”

This song, recorded for the Dangerous album features a guest verse from LL Cool J.  The song was almost released as part of the deluxe edition of Dangerous in 2001.

Kenny Loggins “Who’s Right, Who’s Wrong”

Michael only sings background vocals on this song, but it’s still a great tune!

The Jacksons “Surprise Song”

This improvised song by The Jacksons was sent out to members of their fan club in the early 1980s.

Bryan Loren “Satisfy You”

Michael and songwriter Bryan Loren collaborated on many songs throughout the years (including Michael’s uncredited contributions to Bart Simpson’s “Do The Bartman”).  One of the songs they worked on together was “Satisfy You” which received some notoriety in the early 90s after being recorded by Chanté Moore and Damion Hall of the group Guy.

After ruining “We Are The World” for millions of people last month, legendary producer Quincy Jones is set to ruin even more of his classic productions with his upcoming Soul Bossa Nostra tribute album.

Jones has called on a who’s who of today’s stars to cover some of his classic works, and the list of artists and the songs they are attached to make me want to vomit.

Here’s a few of the biggest offenders:

Akon “Strawberry Letter 23″ (made famous by The Brothers Johnson)
Usher, Robin Thicke, LL Cool J, Trey Songz, Tyrese, Tevin Campbell “Secret Garden” (originally performed by El DeBarge, James Ingram, Al B. Sure!, and Barry White)
Ludacris “Soul Bossa Nova” (aka the Austin Powers theme, and sample source for Luda’s “Number One Spot”)
T-Pain & Robin Thicke “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” (originally performed by Michael Jackson)

Now I must say that it’s not all doom and gloom, as Quincy did find some people worthy of the songs they are covering:

The full artist roster for the “We Are The World 25 For Haiti) was unveiled yesterday (February 10) and a number of top rappers will be featured on the remake of the 1985 hit single.

Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, T-Pain, Lil Wayne, LL Cool J, Kid Cudi, Snoop Dogg, Nipsey Hussle, Fergie, Drake, will.I.am and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are among the artists featured on the track, which was recorded in the same studio as the original version.

The world premiere of We Are The World 25 will take place during NBC’s coverage of the opening ceremony during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics tomorrow (February 12) at 7:30 PM EST.

Drugs are a very bad thing. They have ruined the lives of many people. I remember Maia Campbell from In The House with LL Cool J. I think I even had a crush on her. She was a bright young lady with a bright future who attended Spelman University. Unfortunately she also had some mental issues and was possibly bi-polar and went into a downward spiral when her mother died in 2006. With Common continuing his streak of gully roles in Terminator Salvation we started thinking about all of the rappers who have moonlighted in Hollywood. Some actually built careers (Will Smith, LL Cool J, Latifah) while others seem to be one-hitter quitters (Nas, The Game, Eminem.) Rap icon LL Cool J will be the topic of an upcoming E! True Hollywood Story documentary. Premiering next Wednesday, April 15 at 10pm EST, the story of the Queens rapper will come to life on the small screen from the famed entertainment network.

The special will include interview commentary from Def Jam Records co-founder Russell Simmons, Diddy, as well as LL Cool J and his wife and children.

Prodigy has been doing a lot of writing since he went to prison, but don’t look for the material to wind up on his next album. In another letter written by one half of Mobb Deep, Prodigy tackles the issue of the greatest rapper of all time and names his 40 favorite rappers.

He begins the three page opus by stating that he doesn’t believe there is a such thing as a “best rapper.”

“There are too many great rappers,” Prodigy writes. “There is no greatest rapper ever.”

Prodigy then goes on to take a not so subliminal shot at Hell Rell and Rick Ross.

“You got people who actually think Hell Rell is a good rapper. There’s people who get the chills when they hear Rick Ross, like he’s something special.”

The conclusion of the letter finds Prodigy naming his 40 favorites-in no particular order of course. LL Cool J, Kool G Rap, and Rakim all make the list. In addition, Prodigy also places Three 6 Mafia, TI, and Kanye West on his list as well.

Last week, Def Jam Records released two iTunes-exclusive compilations called Def Jam 25: DJ Bring That Back Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, in honor of their 25th anniversary. Now, with the second annual Record Store Day approaching, Def Jam has decided to release a physical double-disc set in support for the day.

L.A. Reid, chairman of Island Def Jam Music Group, explained the significance of Def Jam’s success throughout the late 20th century, saying, “25 years as a thriving, successful Hip Hop and R&B label-a company that has always put its artists first and maintained deep roots in the urban community-is a giant accomplishment in anyone’s book.”

Continuing, Reid adamantly described his perspective of the urban powerhouse label. “From a personal standpoint, I can say that Def Jam had tremendous meaning and significance in my own career as a musician, producer and independent label head, long before I actually arrived at these offices five years ago.”

As a theme, the double-disc compilation features 25 different records, with a different artist for each track. Each record is also represented by a different year, from T La Rock’s 1984 single “It’s Yours,” to Rihanna’s 2008 smash hit “Disturbia.” Also included on the compilation will be Hip Hop legends LL Cool J, Jay-Z, and Public Enemy, just to name a few.

Def Jam 25: DJ Bring That Back Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 are tentatively scheduled for release during the week of Record Store Day, which occurs on Saturday, April 18.
