It was reported the Grammy winner was pushed into filing for bankruptcy again. While some believe the cause is frivolous spending, TMZ says it has something to do with T-Boz’ ex-husband, Mack 10. He owes her $250,000 in back child support.

In light of recent events, The Urban Daily serves up a list of nine celebrities who have filed for bankruptcy. Let these stars’ mistakes be a lesson to you all. Pay the government, before you wind up homeless.

George Clinton

The man who has given the world beloved hits like “Atomic Dog,” “Flashlight,” and “One Nation Under A Groove” has been the victim of record industry rule #4080. George Clinton learned just how shady record companies were in 1985 when he filed for bankruptcy. He was forced to do so because he signed contracts which gave most of the royalties from his music to the record companies. Clinton’s only way of making money from his music was to tour. As soon as people thought George was back on his feet, it was announced George Clinton still didn’t have any money when his mother passed in 2010. Failing health and all, Clinton is still touring to make ends meet.

Natalie Cole

1997 was a roller coaster of a year for Natalie Cole. After winning her eighth Grammy, she filed for bankruptcy. Cole sought financial protection because her spending habits were out of control. Also, her success in the 90s was, in part, due to her recordings featuring her late father, Nat King Cole. Much of the money made from those works had to be paid to his estate. They say never do business with family and Natalie Cole is a prime example. If you do business with  your family, you might just end up broke.

Marvin Gaye

The first thing you think of when Marvin Gaye’s name is mentioned is his voice. Say what you will about his addictions and tragic demise, but the man knew how to sing a woman right out of her clothes. His womanizing was the cause for his divorce to Anna Gordy in 1973. By 1976, Gaye had fallen behind on alimony payments to Gordy. To keep himself out of jail, signed over the royalties to his album, Here, My Dear, to his ex-wife. The double album detailed his feelings about their divorce. With song titles like “Anger” and “When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You,” we know it was a hard break up as well as a long journey back to financial freedom.

Toni Braxton

The financial woes of Toni Braxton are crazy enough to be their own character on her reality show. In the late 90s,  Braxton filed for bankruptcy because of what she claims to have been her chronic health problems, bad business dealings, and medical expenses. She landed back in the black with the release of her album, The Heat. However, the good times didn’t last and she filed for bankruptcy for a second time in 2010. Braxton Family Values is a hit and the money generated from the show can help keep her afloat. Maybe a better accountant would help too.

Suge Knight

The reputation precedes the man when referring to Suge Knight. How a man goes from running one of  the hottest labels in the history of hip-hop to being in prison owing a person $107 million dollars is beyond me. I take that back. In Suge’s case, that is quite possible. Lydia Harris won $107 million from Knight on the grounds he cheated her husband out of a 50% stake in Death Row Records. At the time of his filing, court documents revealed Knight’s bank account held only $12. I wonder which he is more embarrassed of: having $12 to his name after such an extravagant few years or getting knocked out by some random dude in a club and having the picture of him laid out being posted on the internet?

TLC

The ladies of TLC experienced the seedier side of the music business before they filed for bankruptcy. First they signed a management deal with former singer, Pebbles, which gave her a monetary cut of every business deal the group made. Then, when the trio fired her, she sued them for $40 million. They settled out of court with the stipulation, Pebbles got a piece of their future earnings. After that was taken care of, the group released their landmark album, CrazySexyCool. While it sold upwards of 10 million records, the girls were left with $50,000 a piece. Left Eye famously explained how they wound up broke in their episode of Behind The Music. TLC bounced back in 1999 with another chart topping disc, but stopped recording music when the Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was killed in a car accident in Honduras in 2002.

Isaac Hayes

Isaac Hayes is the man behind some of the greatest soul records ever created. Being that songwriters get a bigger cut in the royalties than the performers, Isaac Hayes should’ve been well off, right? Wrong. Hayes filed for bankruptcy in 1974. Black Moses’ credit was already in the red with Union Planters Bank. He looked to his label, Stax Records, for help but they were in the same boat. Hayes negotiated a deal between himself, Stax Records, and Union Planters Bank. The terms were Stax would let the singer out of his contract to record elsewhere and the money made from the album would go to paying his debt incurred with the bank. By the end of the proceedings, Hayes was left without a home, no personal property, none of his future royalties from anything he wrote or performed. Good thing his speaking voice was so distinctive. Hayes’ bank account was increased when he voiced the character of Chef on South Park years later.

MC Hammer

When people hear about MC Hammer’s meteoric rise and drastic fall, all they can do is shake their heads. He is the poster child for what happens when you overextend yourself while trying to live as lavishly as possible. Hammer went $13 million into debt because he employed half of Oakland as part of his entourage. His monthly expenses were over $500,000 and that’s before taking care of his family. Hammer got his life right with God and is now working with start up internet companies trying to further the positive uses of the internet. Oh yeah, did we mention his appearances in those Cash 4 Gold commercials? He’s doing those too.

Ron Isley

The lead singer of The Isley Brothers was placed on the list of California’s most delinquent taxpayers in the early 2000s. He filed for bankruptcy after some of  his property, including a yacht, was repossessed. Once Uncle Sam got his hands on Ron Isley’s yacht, he figured that wasn’t good enough. Isley was thrown in prison for 37 months for tax evasion. He has since been released from prison, dropped an album, and is working on another with R. Kelly.

Marvin’s early years in the music industry were spent singing in doo wop groups like The Moonglows, and working as a session drummer for Motown acts like The Miracles, The Contours, Martha & The Vandellas, and The Marvellettes.  Marvin played drums on Little Stevie Wonder’s breakout single “Fingertips Pt. 2″ in 1963.

His first album as a solo artist, 1961′s The Soulful Moods Of Marvin Gaye, contained jazz influenced covers of Broadway showtunes and went largely unnoticed.  Gaye wouldn’t find success on the charts until a year later when his single “Stubborn Kind Of Fellow” became a hit.  A long string of Top 40 singles followed including “Hitch Hike,” “Pride & Joy” and “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” to name a few.

Marvin found quite a bit of success in the 1960s recording duets with artists like Mary Wells and Kim Weston. However it was Tammi Terrell who Marvin would find the most success with.  Marvin and Tammi recorded several monster singles together including “You’re All I Need To Get By” and “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing.”

During a 1967 concert, Tammi Terrell collapsed on stage in Marvin’s arms.  She was later diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.  Terrell’s illness threw Marvin into a deep depression, even as he released the song that became his first number one single, and the biggest selling record in Motown history at that point.  She died three years later on March 16, 1970.

Immediately after Tammi’s death, Marvin considered quitting the music business to become a football player.  He even tried out for the Detroit Lions.  When that didn’t pan out, Marvin returned to the studio and planted the seeds that would later blossom into his best known work, the What’s Going On album.

Initially met with skepticism from Motown head, Berry Gordy, Marvin insisted that the politically charged song “What’s Going On” be released as a single.  Gordy relented, and the song became a runaway hit.

Marvin had continued success throughout the 70s releasing classic album after album – Let’s Get It On, I Want You, Here My Dear, among others.  By the close of the decade, Marvin’s personal demons had caught up to him and his addiction to drugs, and masochistic personality began to take their toll on his career.

Marvin retreated first to Hawaii, then to Belgium where he regrouped and put together what would be his final album, 1982′s Midnight Love. The album would spawn Marvin’s last top 10 single, “Sexual Healing.”  The song would also earn Marvin his first Grammy Award and prove that Marvin was back.

Marvin’s comeback was strengthened by an appearance at the 1983 NBA All-Star game where Marvin transformed “The Star Spangled Banner” into a smooth soul groove to the delight of the audience.

Unfortunately, Marvin’s comeback was short-lived.  On the morning of April 1, 1984, after an argument, Marvin was shot by his father in his parents’ home.

Filmmaker Richard Olivier filmed a documentary about Marvin’s time in Belgium.  The documentary was rarely seen outside of Belgium, but features quite a bit of intimate footage of Marvin walking around the city, interviews, and rehearsal footage.

Some beautiful soul uploaded the 55 minute documentary, which was released after Marvin’s death on April 1st 1984 at the hands of his father,  to the Internet.

O’Jays – Ship Ahoy

“Way before Alex Haley, Gamble and Huff made side one [of this album] about the slave trade. Even though I was 5 when that record came out I was very aware and well informed of how we came in from Africa. That was a risky thing to do in ‘73. Nobody was writing about the slave trade in pop music especially for a new label trying to find success on the pop charts after the success of the OJ’s “Backstabbers”. We tried to do a song off this album, “Don’t call me brother”, but it would have been a duet.”

It goes without saying that Kanye West, who celebrated a birthday yesterday, is one of hip-hop’s greatest producers.

Taking a cue from the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, Kanye’s early work featured a lot samples from classic soul records from the 1970s.  Artists from Jay-Z to Janet Jackson used Kanye’s soul sampling beats.

Here are a few of our favorite Kanye productions, and the sweet soul records Kanye sampled for them:

Alicia Keys “You Don’t Know My Name”

Built around a few samples from The Main Ingredient’s “Let Me Prove My Love To You,” Alicia Keys got her third top 10 single in the US with this song from her second album.

Slum Village “Selfish” (feat. Kanye West & John Legend)

T3 and Elzhi of Slum Village teamed up with Kanye and John Legend on this track that samples Aretha Franklin’s classic piano ballad, “Call Me.”

Twista “Overnight Celebrity”

Kanye gave this beat to his fellow Chicago hometown hero, Twista.  “Overnight Celebrity” uses a sample of Lenny Williams’ “‘Cause I Love You.”

Scarface “Guess Who’s Back” (feat. Jay-Z & Beanie Sigel)

Kanye produced this single from Scarface’s critically acclaimed 2002 album, The Fix.  The song samples Motown’s vocal group The Originals and their song “Sunrise.”

Kanye West “Spaceship” (feat. G.L.C. & Consequence)

Kanye’s tale about being a disgruntled employee at The Gap features a sample of Marvin Gaye’s classic balad “Distant Lover.”

Janet Jackson “I Want You”

This single from Janet’s Damita Jo album features a sample of B.T. Express’ cover of The Carpenters’ AM radio staple “(They Long To Be) Close To You.”

Nas “Poppa Was A Playa”

Although credited to Kanye’s mentor, Deric Angelettie (aka The Mad Rapper), Kanye actually ghostproduced this track from Nas’ The Lost Tapes album that samples Eddie Kendricks’ “The Newness Is Gone.”

Terence Howard recently revealed that he’s been in talks with director Cameron Crowe to star in Crowe’s upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic.

Speaking with a reporter from Deadline London, Howard said that the director approached him to star in the film, but nothing has been finalized yet.  Howard’s also quoted as saying “Everybody who loves music will hate me if I get this one wrong.”

Damn right.

Cameron Crowe originally reached out to Will Smith to portray the legendary soul singer, but Smith declined.

Another Marvin Gaye biopic, titled Sexual Healing, is in the works with Jesse L Martin (“Law & Order”) to play Gaye. Unlike Crowe’s film, Sexual Healing will only deal with the final years of Gaye’s life.

Oran “Juice” Jones “The Rain”

The classic Def Jam record chronicles the story of a man who catches his woman on a date with another man, and concludes with the hilarious confrontation.

“Did you miss me? I missed you too. I missed you so much I followed you today.”

Eminem “Kim”

Raw emotion makes for great art. Eminem wrote this murderous tale after his on/off girlfriend Kim (hence the title) cheated on him. This one still gives me chills to this day.

“Never knew me cheating on you would come back to haunt me / But we was kids then Kim, I was only 18 / That was years ago / I thought we wiped the slate clean”

Erykah Badu “Tyrone”

This classic song about a woman kicking her man to the curb even had the fellas conceding defeat.

“I think you better call Tyrone / But you can’t use my phone”

D’Angelo “S**t, Damn, M**********r”

R&B’s Howard Hughes sings about catching his wife with his best friend. Violence ensues.

“I’m ’bout to go get my nine / and kill both of y’alls behinds”

TLC “No Scrubs”

Labeled male bashers by every man after the song dropped, only the ones that fit the description should’ve been mad at T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli.

“I don’t want your number / No / I don’t wanna give you mine / And no / I don’t wanna meet you nowhere / No / I don’t want none of your time”

Sporty Thievz “No Pigeons”

Of course the men had to respond to TLC. Sporty Thievz came through with their sole hit and gave TLC what for.

“Y’all chicks ain’t gettin’ nada / Uh oh! / Your p*ssy ain’t worth the Ramada / Uh oh! / Anyway your friend looks hotter / Uh oh! / Game is somethin’ we got a lot of”

Kelis “Caught Out There”

Kelis’ debut single was definitely the tale of a woman scorned and helped make her a household name.

“So sick of your games / I’ll set your truck to flames / And watch it blow up, blow up”

Method Man & D’Angelo “Break Ups 2 Make Ups”

Method Man confronts his ex-girl about her cheating ways and gives her no hope of ever rekindling their relationship.

“All up in my face acting overzealous / Like you want somethin from Meth / I hope it ain’t love girl / Cause I ain’t got none left for you”

Justin Timberlake “Cry Me A River”

Rumored to be about his break-up with Britney Spears, the video did nothing to squash those rumors with a girl that oddly resembled Spears getting dissed.

“Girl I refuse / You must have me confused with some other guy / The bridges were burned / Now its your turn / To Cry / So cry me a river”

RZA “Domestic Violence”

The Wu-Tang leader’s graphic song detailing an argument between him and his girl was shocking when it first came out, and is still just as shocking now!

“What the f*ck y’all birds talking about? / Get the f*ck out my house / ‘Fore I grab you by your hair and slap d*ck to your mouth”

BONUS:  Marvin Gaye Here My Dear LP

Marvin Gaye’s 1978 album, Here My Dear, is the ultimate tale of love gone wrong.  In an unprecedented move, Marvin agreed to give his ex-wife, Anna Gordy, the proceeds from his next album.  Initially Marvin planned to record a throwaway album and have it fail, but instead he grew fascinated with the concept and recorded one of the most etherous albums and released it on his ex-wife’s brother’s (Berry Gordy) label.

Anna contemplated suing Marvin for invasion of privacy after hearing the album for the first time.

“I guess I’ll have to say this album is / Dedicated to you. / Although perhaps you may not be happy, / this is what you want / So I conceded. / I hope it makes you happy. / There’s a lot of truth in it, babe.”

Or how about this gem?

“You got a flair for style / And the style is all the while / What could i do? / The judge said she got to keep on living the way she accustomed to.”
