OSCAR WATCH: Did The Academy Snub Mary J. Blige?

Mary J. Blige is not feeling much love for The Oscars. Yesterday, The Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences announced their nominations, and even though The Help scored four Oscar nods, Blige’s “The Living Proof” was curiously left out of the running for Best Original Song. Even curiouser, is the fact that only two songs were nominated, when the Best Original Song category usually has five slots available in previous Oscar years. MJB quickly let her feelings be known on Twitter:

Blige’s fans came to her defense, some even citing racism as the reason for the Oscar snub. What say you readers, should “The Living Proof” have made the Oscar shortlist?

Mary J. Blige just dropped her tenth album, My Life II… The Journey Continues (Act 1), at the end of 2011. Grooving to it got us the thinking of her many classics—so much so that bam, a top 10 list had to be whipped up. Where do we begin (or end)? Since the early ‘90s MJB’s been spewing out soulful, yet hardcore tales of hate, infidelity, abuse, and more recently, true love.

10. All That I Can Say

Lauryn Hill injected some mellow into Blige’s usually frantic delivery, penning the lyrics for Mary’s first single. This one finds Mary blissful, hopping from one cloud to the next while tossing compliments to some lucky guy.

9. Just Fine

“I like what I see when I’m looking at me when I’m walking past the mirror,” Mary sings joyfully. What? Yeah, this is the same lady that spent the first decade of her musical career howling at the demons in her closet. By the time this, the lead single from her eighth album Growing Pains dropped, Blige’s life apparently was just fine. She was a few years into her seemingly blissful marriage with husband and manager Kendu Isaacs. This is what happiness gave Mary, a bouncing dance smash. Surprisingly, Mary wears cheer well.

8. Everything

Mary falls deep into a flowery pit of love on this Stylistics-sampling single. She was years away from finding her future husband, but effortlessly sings of her everything here.

7. Enough Cryin’

Grown and needing a lot more than promises to please her, Mary’s fed up with the lies of a man afraid to put a ring on it. And instead of staying and arguing, she’s packing up and bouncing out of his life to producer Rodney Jerkins’ booming bass and strings. Her rapping alter ego, Brook Lynn, also makes a solid lyrical appearance—shouting out a pair of designer shoes and telling the chump where to find her when he comes to his senses.

6. Family Affair

This early oughts jam marked the start of Mary pushing negativity to the side in favor of club-ready bangers. Fittingly, it came from her fifth album entitled No More Drama. The Dr. Dre-produced single topped Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, as well as their Pop and R&B charts.

5. I’m Goin’ Down

Mary’s cover of the Rose Royce Carwash ballad is so marvelous that when others sing it today, most think hers is the original. “Down” is from her sophomore set My Life, an album mostly about being in the dumps when it comes to love. Here, along with the next cut on this list, is where you hear her heart ache the loudest.

4. My Life

The title track from her sophomore album is arguably the most hopeful and gloomy on the set. As she’s confessed since, My Life was recorded during the roughest period of her life. She was adjusting to fame, in an abusive relationship with K-Ci of K-Ci and JoJo, and on drugs. Still, she looked to a higher power and sung of better days ahead.

3. Not Gon’ Cry

Mary plays the character of a scorned wife here. And though she wasn’t actually married in real life, she sure did wail on the Waiting to Exhale single like a hubby of 11 years did her wrong and stepped out on her. But instead of just wallowing in self-pity, she keeps a stiff upper lip. “Should’ve left your ass [a] long time ago,” she sings walking away from the man she once stood by proudly. “You’re not worth my tears.” This is the Mary—showing strength even during periods of turmoil—we’d love for years to come.

2. Be Without You

Usually Mary’s on the brink of a failed relationship, which soon tanks. On the first single from The Breakthrough she powers through all rough patches with the kind of muscle only love can provide. “We’ve been too strong for to long,” Blige reminds her man on the hook. There’s no quit in her anymore.

1. Real Love

Sampling Audio Two’s “Top Billing,” the second single from Blige’s classic debut, What’s the 411, found the rookie singer searching for the kind of affection that would elude her for years to come. It also birthed the sound she’d become the reigning queen of: Hip-Hop Soul.

Fresh on the heels of her Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song, Mary J. Blige will be coming to a silver screen near you. She stars in the new movie musical, Rock of Ages.

The New Line Cinema release is based on the Broadway production where two people meet at a club on the Sunset Strip called Rock of Ages. The two fall in love and try to maintain a relationship over time while using 80s rock anthems to add emotion and depth. Blige stars as a bartender named Justice. Justice has has daughter in the film named Sherrie. Justice’s pivotal scene is when she sings “Harden My Heart.”

Rock of Ages also stars Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, and Julianne Hough. Adam Shankman is the director. His prior works include Bringing Down The House and the 2007 musical Hairspray. Rock of Ages will hit theaters on June 1, 2012.

Heavy D died on November 8, 2011 and was remembered by hundreds of fans and friends this past Friday at Grace Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, NY.

Mary J. Blige Relives Her Relationship With K-Ci [VIDEO]

If you watched Mary J. Blige’s VH1 Behind The Music special, you may have gotten inspired or even shed a tear. Mary told a short version of her life story to VH1. There was no way Mary could do that without mentioning K-Ci of Jodeci who was once a major part of her life.

The two were one of hip hop’s first couples, but Mary and K-Ci were no match made in heaven. The two physically abused one another often. Mary shared the pain she felt in that relationship with us on her My Life album. Mary has not spoken much about her relationship with K-Ci until now. Mary says she was hurt by K-Ci when she found out he denied their engagement.

“I was on some TV show saying that I was engaged and showing off my ring (and) the host pulls up the tape and says, ‘This is what he said.’”

Asked for a comment after the footage was shown to her, Blige simply asked the host to “move on”, insisting, “We’re not getting married now.”

“You don’t ask a woman to marry you if that’s not what you want. I was young and I was in love. That hurt me.”

Mary appeared on the UK TV show two weeks after K-Ci. When asked if he was getting engaged he denied it and stated that he was single. Check out the video below. (6:16)

Mary J. Blige’s Behind The Music is set to air tonight where she opens up about being molested at the age of 5 and her struggle with alcohol and drugs. “When I was 5 years old I was molested and just, you know. I remember feeling, literally right before it happened, I just could not believe that this person was going to do this to me.…That thing followed me all my life. The shame of thinking my molestation was my fault. It led me to believe I wasn’t worth anything.” says Mary.

“The problem had snowballed into this thing that was bigger than me. It was bigger than me. And it was definitely going to kill me. So I was like this is it and let’s go. And I remember sitting on my bed. I swear, I don’t know what death feels like, but I felt like my spirit was trying to leave my body. And I was crying, and I was going please God, no no, not now, I don’t want this. I prayed, like I remember saying a prayer I said God, send me someone to help me.”

The full episode airs tonight on VH1 at 10pm.
