Michelle Obama was interviewed by Gayle King where she refuted those claims. Obama told King, “I guess it’s just more interesting to imagine this conflicted situation here. That’s been an image people have tried to paint of me since the day Barack announced, that I’m some kind of angry black woman.”

Mrs. Obama also stated that she has no real contact with Obama’s staff. “If there’s communication that needs to happen, it’s between staffs,” she said. “I don’t have conversations with my husband’s staff.”

First Lady Michelle Obama invited notable MC and actor Common to a poetry event. The invitation has proven to be cause for alarm by some members of the poltical right who protest Common’s alleged “cop killer” lyrics.

Fox News is crying foul point thanks to a protest poem Common performed on Def Poetry Jam in 2005 titled “A Letter To The Law” which includes lines like “Tell the preacher, god got more than one son / Tell the law, my Uzi weighs a ton / I walk like a warrior, from them I won’t run / On the streets, they try to beat us like a drum.”  Also causing a panic is a line from the same poem where Common says “Seeing a fiend being hung / With that happening, why they messing with Saddam? / Burn a Bush cos’ for peace he no push no button.”

Obviously the point of the piece, which questions the continued brutalization of African-Americans at the hands of the police and the government’s ignoring of problems in the inner cities, was completely missed.

We’re just glad that they didn’t bother touching Common’s retelling of Assata Shakur’s story, 2000′s “A Song For Assata.”

President Obama told talk show host Oprah Winfrey Wednesday that he was never worried about “birther” challenges to his citizenship because he recalled being born in Hawaii.

“When it first came up were you thinking, ‘I hope I was born here?’” asked Winfrey.

With his wife at his side, Mr. Obama, grinning, responded, “Can I just say? I was there, so I knew that — I knew I had been born. I remembered it.”

The Obamas’ appearance on Winfrey’s show will air Monday.

The Commander-In-Chief and his wife will be making an appearance on an upcoming episode of Fox’s “American Idol.”

Barack and Michelle Obama filmed their appearance on the show on Wednesday for the show’s annual “Idol Gives Back” episode.

The “Idol Gives Back” episode is a charitable event that’s already raised more than $140 million for global charities.  The episode featuring the First Family will air on April 21st.

President Barack Obama is the target of more than 30 potential death threats a day and is being protected by an increasingly over-stretched and under-resourced Secret Service, according to a new book.

Since Obama took office, the rate of threats against the president has increased 400 percent from the roughly 3,000 per year under President George W. Bush, according to Ronald Kessler, author of “In the President’s Secret Service.”

Some threats to Obama, whose Secret Service codename is Renegade, have been publicized, including an alleged plot by white supremacists in Tennessee late last year to rob a gun store, shoot 88 black people, decapitate another 14 and then assassinate the first black president in American history.

Most however, are kept under wraps because the Secret Service fears that revealing details of them would only increase the number of copycat attempts. Although most threats are not credible, each one has to be investigated thoroughly.

According to the book, intelligence officials received intel that people associated with the Somalia-based Islamist group al-Shabaab might try to disrupt Obama’s inauguration in January, when the Secret Service coordinated at least 40,000 agents and officers from some 94 police, military and security agencies.

More than a dozen counter-sniper teams were stationed along the inauguration parade route and the criminal records of employees and hotel guests in nearby buildings were scrutinized, the book states. Despite all this, there were glaring loopholes in the security.

Kessler describes how more than 100 VIPs and major campaign donors were screened by metal detectors but then walked along a public pavement before boarding “secure” buses and were not checked again. It could have been relatively simple for an assassin to have mingled with them in order to get close enough to shoot the new president, the book notes.

After Obama was elected president, his two children Malia, 11, codenamed Radiance, and Sasha, eight, codenamed Rosebud, began receiving Secret Service protection. Obama’s wife Michelle is codenamed Renaissance. The Secret Service also started to protect Vice-President Joe Biden’s children, grandchildren, and mother.

Instead of bringing in more agents, the Secret Service directed agents to work longer hours to cover the extra load and to miss firearms training, physical fitness sessions and tests.

“We have half the number of agents we need, but requests for more agents have fallen on deaf ears at headquarters,” a Secret Service agent told Kessler. “Headquarters’ mentality has always been, ‘You can complete the mission with what you have. You’re a U.S.S.S. agent’.”

During his recent concert in Washington D.C., Paul McCartney dedicated his love song “Michelle” to the nation’s First Lady, Michelle Obama.

McCartney, a big supporter of the Obamas, said before the election that he hoped he could one day sing a certain song to Michelle.

“I love you, I love you, I love you. That’s all I want to say,” he sang before Saturday’s crowd at FedEx Field, according to NBC Washington. “I need to, I need to, I need to, I need to make you see. Oh, what you mean to me.”

Megan K. Scott of the Associated Press wrote an article this week about the president’s name becoming a new buzz word in the dating scene when it comes to a woman’s ideal man.

She writes:

Monica Weeks has met many men, but at age 51 she says she still hasn’t found her “Barack.”

Among Weeks and her friends, U.S. President Barack Obama’s name has become shorthand for a black man with integrity, character and spirituality, one who loves and values his wife and makes his family a priority – in other words, the kind of man that many black women had despaired of finding.

Weeks said probably every single woman she knows is looking for her “Barack.”

“He absolutely makes me think it’s attainable,” said Weeks, a divorced mom in Somerset, N.J. “For women who are older and seeking a man, I think we can look at him and say, ‘All is not lost.”‘

The story is the same elsewhere among black women, who say the new code word for Prince Charming has become so commonplace that they have been asked “Have you found your Barack?” or told others “I’m looking for my Barack.”

Obama’s sex appeal hasn’t hurt – what other president would get high marks in a swimsuit competition? But he has touched a nerve among black women in particular, who consider him an IBM (Ideal Black Man) – educated, eloquent, tall, attractive, family oriented, ambitious and down to earth.

For years, single black women have been commiserating about the perceived shortage of eligible black men. It’s laughed about in movies (“Waiting to Exhale”) and backed up with statistics: The May unemployment rate for black men was 16.8 per cent for those ages 20 and older, compared to a national rate of 9.8 per cent for all adult men. Black women outnumber black men almost 2-to-1 on college campuses. Most black babies are born to unwed mothers.

“There are a large number of African-American women who have largely given up on finding a mate,” said Sheri Parks, associate professor of American studies at the University of Maryland. “Their men are not there.”

President Barack Obama kept a campaign promise he made to his wife Michelle and whisked her off to the Big Apple Saturday night to see a Broadway play.

“I am taking my wife to New York City because I promised her during the campaign that I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished,” the president said in a statement an aide read to the press.

After grabbing a two-hour dinner at Blue Hill, a West Village restaurant touted by New York magazine as a “seminal Greenmarket haven” that features food grown by chef and owner Dan Barber on his upstate farm, the Obama’s arrived at the Belasco Theater to see the August Wilson play “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.”

The production is about black America in the early 1900s, with residents of a boardinghouse recalling their migration from the sharecropping farms of the South to the industrialized North.

Michelle Obama [click here to read] has made People magazine’s new list of 100 most beautiful people, joining other first-timers Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart of “Twilight,” Nick and Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers and “Slumdog Millionaire” star Dev Patel.

In the annual issue due on newsstands Friday, the First Lady said, “I had a father and a brother who thought I was beautiful, and they made me feel that way every single day. I grew up with very strong male role models who thought I was smart and fast and funny, so I heard that a lot. I know that there are many young girls who don’t hear it. But I was fortunate.”

America has a president who not only knows Beyonce’s song “Single Ladies,” but has seen the “Saturday Night Live” spoof of the video featuring Justin Timberlake as a background dancer, and has even mastered the song’s hand flip choreography.

As the Obama family took time out to greet each performer from the “We Are One” concert at the Lincoln Memorial, one of the artists, John Legend, had a video camera rolling to capture the entire experience for his Web site.

While speaking with Beyonce, Michelle Obama is seen on the film saying to her husband, “Mr. President, you didn’t’ tell Beyonce about ‘Single Ladies’? Your rendition?” Obama laughed and said, “I’m not like Justin. I didn’t put on the outfit. …[But] I didn’t want my girls thinking that I couldn’t, you know…I got a lil something.” He then flips his hand back and forth and said, “This part, I got.”

The rest of Legend’s video, lasting just under 12 minutes, shows such artists as Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah, Josh Groban, Tom Hanks, James Taylor, Sheryl Crow and Forest Whitaker standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial anxiously awaiting the handshake and/or pound/hug from the new president.

“Jim confessed that the election inspired him to drop the word “nigga” from his vocabulary—where it was a nearly ubiquitous presence—and replace it with “Obama.” He gave me a few examples: “What up, my Obama?” “Yo, did you see them Obamas last night?” “Now that’s a real Obama.”

US rapper Jay-Z has spoken about a song he has written to mark Barack Obama’s inauguration as the 44th president of the United States.

The rapper performed ‘History’ for the first time at the Neighborhood Ball in Washington DC last night (January 20th).

The track features the lines: “All I got is dreams nobody else can see/ Nobody else believes, nobody else but me/ Where are you victory, I need you desperately/ Not just for the moment to make history.”

Jay-Z told MTV that ‘History’ was a “deep” but “fun” record about the significance of the recent change in America.

“The ‘History’ record is really about – once again – about making history. But I use different words as if they were women: ‘Success. I met success and success was a sister of defeat.”

“You know, if you listen to the record it’s pretty much talking about trying to find victory, victory being a woman, and so me and victory can make a kid — the kid being history, and then history tells your legacy.”

“It’s deep but it’s fun. It’s not really that complicated.”

As previously reported on Gigwise, an early studio version of the song emerged last November when its producer, Kanye West, published it on his blog.

“History” is expected to feature on Jay-Z’s next album Blueprint 3.

The rapper’s wife, Beyonce, sung for the President and the First Lady at the Neighborhood Ball as they took their first dance.

An updated version of the exclusive HBO special We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration At The Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday, January 21st (11:30 p.m. ET/PT). This presentation will include the invocation of the Rt. Reverend V. Gene Robinson, as well as all of the original performances of the live special, which was seen Sunday, Jan. 18.

The new version will also be seen this weekend on the main HBO channel and on HBO Latino, on Saturday, Jan. 24th (6:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT) and Sunday, Jan. 25th (3:30 p.m. ET/PT).

Shortly after being called upon to serenade Barack and Michelle Obama at the Neighborhood Ball, Beyonce has revealed the song she will sing as the couple graces the dance floor for the first time as President and First Lady.

She has chosen the Etta James classic “At Last,” which she performed in the recent film Cadillac Records while starring as the blues legend.

“I am so honored that I will be performing for President Obama and the first lady,” Bey said in a statement. “To sing `At Last’ while they have their first dance is a dream come true. I could not be more honored and excited that they have asked me to be part of this moment in history.” The Neighborhood Ball, one of the 10 official balls, will take place in Washington on Tuesday night

Maybe, just maybe all the hate Ann Coulter’s been spewing against the Obamas and Democrats/liberals in general has finally come back to haunt her.

The Drudge Report is reporting that “the nation’s top selling conservative author has been banned from appearing on NBC,” according to insiders.

“We are just not going to have her on any more, it’s over,” a top network source explains.

But not so fast says a second source from the network who strongly denies there is any “Coulter ban.”

“Look for a re-invite, as soon as Wednesday,” said the unnamed executive.

According to Drudge, the Today show abruptly cut Coulter appearance from its broadcast this morning where she was set to promote her new book, “Guilty: Liberal ‘Victims’ and Their Assault on America.”

Supposedly it was the book’s theme, Coulter’s very unkind examination of liberal bias in the new era, that got her dis-invited.

“We are just not interested in anyone so highly critical of President-elect Obama, right now,” a “Today Show” insider stated. “It’s such a downer. It’s just not the time, and it’s not what our audience wants, either.”

There’s also speculation that NBC dropped the controversial author because of pressure from various watchdog groups including Media Matters for America which launched a campaign that asked, “Is NBC going to help Coulter sell this book?” The organization also claims “Guilty” includes deliberate lies:

“These falsehoods come on a wide-ranging list of subjects including her defense of the claims made against Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth during the 2004 presidential campaign; her assertion that “Fox News has never been caught promoting a fraud“; her claim that President-elect Barack Obama was referring to Gov. Sarah Palin when he said “you know, you can put lipstick on a pig; it’s still a pig”; and attacks she makes against New York Times columnist Frank Rich.”

And of course, as NewsOne reported yesterday, the book mocks Michelle Obama’s style while praising Cindy McCain’s.

Meanwhile, Monday night, Coulter was a guest on the Fox News’ Hannity and Colmes show where she criticized NBC for canceling her Today show appearance. She said the network was orchestrating a “set up to block me from other TV shows.”

Just where will Michelle Obama “get her hair did” while living in the White House? Hair stylists in the Washington D.C. area are already angling to secure the soon-to-be First Lady as a client, reports the Associated Press.

“I’m going to be doing her hair!” says positive thinker Barry Fletcher, the 52-year-old owner of The Hair Palace Salon in Mitchellville, Md. He cites his experience in international hairstyling challenges and working with actress Halle Berry and singer Mya, a D.C. native.

“This would pretty much validate all of my hard work and effort to get to a level where I could handle a powerful queen like the First Lady,” added Fletcher, who sent Michelle Obama a 17-minute DVD about himself.

Hairdresser Keith Harley of Keith Harley Hair & Scalp Clinic in Arlington, Va. uploaded his resume to President-elect Barack Obama’s Web site a month ago.

“It would be the highlight of my career. It would be an honor,” said 39-year-old Harley, who styles Black Entertainment Television chief executive Debra Lee. 

Nicole Cober-Blake, the 37-year-old lawyer-turned-owner of D.C.’s Soul Day Spa and Salon, plans to get her name in the mix by sending Michelle Obama a welcome basket with bath gels, hair products and a robe. Cober-Blake said she’s excited about the possibility of having Obama experience the services at Soul, where she said they “treat everyone like a Michelle Obama.”

For election night, Michael “Rahni” Flowers of Van Cleef Hair Studio in Chicago — Obama’s stylist since she was 18 — did her hair. And for the Democratic National Convention, Obama turned to Chicago-native Johnny Wright of Frederic Fekkai’s Los Angeles salon.

“The thing about being the first lady, you’re only as fashionable as your last picture,” said Dennis Roche, 58, of D.C.’s Roche Salon, which has African-American-hair experts he said could style Obama. “This is kind of risky because of the fact that we all have bad hair days.”

As if to prove that he’s both man and woman enough to embody the nation’s First Couple-elect, drag deity Rupaul has posed for a picture in which he appears as both Barack and Michelle Obama. The gag is for his upcoming Logo series.
