Rihanna Plays Weapons Officer in Upcoming Battleship Movie [Video]

Rihanna’s dropping the sexy outfits she’s known for in favor of camouflage gear and fatigues in her upcoming movie Battleship. In the war on water movie the Bajan singer plays Raikes, a Naval weapons officer.

To prep for it Rihanna got some expert assistance from an actual Navy weapons official, which she referred to as “this bad-ass chick on set.”

Rihanna is out to save the world in the upcoming alien invasion blockbuster Battleship. Based on the Milton Bradley board game, the movie will be an epic sci-fi war film, in which an international naval fleet go to battle against The Regents, an alien race out to conquer the world. When asked why Rihanna was cast, director Peter Berg (Hancock) said:

“I spent a lot of time in the Navy thinking about who would make sense and who would bring an urban swagger to this character,” Berg explained of his idea to cast Rihanna. “Put a call in, had a great couple of meetings, and she’s a great girl, really hard-working, very smart, wants to be good, really strong work ethic, no attitude, no diva nonsense. She was great.”

Battleship also stars Liam Neeson (Taken), Taylor Kitsch (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Alexander Skargard (“True Blood”). The movie is slated to open in theaters May 18, 2012.

Some women have all the luck–actress Paula Patton is beautiful, talented, married to sexy soul crooner Robin Thicke, and mother to their adorable little boy Julian Fuego. Patton’s career is also on fire; the star of the highly anticipated Mission:Impossible–Ghost Protocol shows off her assets on the December issue of Complex Magazine and reveals that her shyness almost prevented her from auditioning for the role of super spy Jane Carter:

“At first I felt like I shouldn’t waste my time, because I just didn’t see how they’d actually cast me. I didn’t think of myself being hired to be in this. Then they kept calling, so I figured, “OK, I have nothing to lose. It would be cool to be a spy. [Laughs.] And it’d be amazing to work with Tom. If they’re calling, there has to be a reason—you have to have more faith in yourself.”

Patton also dished on her red-hot romance with the hubby:

“Your wife should be your sex therapist, or if you’re not married, your girlfriend should be your sex therapist. If she’s not, then things aren’t going so well.”

Pop quiz–Can you name at least two current black action stars, excluding Will Smith and Denzel Washington? Or the last time you saw an interracial couple on the big screen where the storyline didn’t revolve around the color of their skin and/or didn’t end as tragically as a Shakespearean play? Columnist J.F. Sargent at humor site, Cracked.com explores some of the racial and sexist stereotypes Hollywood just can’t seem to let go of. Even with a black man as president, mainstream audiences aren’t comfortable or just don’t care to watch black actor/actresses unless we are in certain supportive roles: the sidekick, the BBF (Best Black Friend), or the domestic (The Help). The author states:

So how does this play out in real movies? Black characters end up in supporting roles, instead of being well-developed characters. They’re just there so we can “judge the other (white) characters by how they treat them.” In other words, we certainly don’t root for racist characters, and we’ll boo racist stereotypes. But our open-mindedness usually stops at the point of actually paying to see a black leading man. Other than Will Smith.

Five Greek Tales That Deserve To Be On The Big Screen

Director Tarsem Singh offers a visually stunning retelling of the story of Theseus (Cavill), a heroic young man who must save the world against the bloodthirsty and power hungry King Hyperion (Rourke).

With Hollywood’s everlasting love affair with epic “sword and sandal” stories The Urban Daily offers five classic Greek tales that deserve the silver screen treatment.

Lysistrata

Written by the playwright Aristophanes, Lysistrata takes a comedic look at one woman’s mission to end the Pelopennesian War. Lysistratra rallies the women of Greece together to withhold all sexual favors from the men in order to force them to negotiate peace with their enemy. Lysistrata holds the distinction of being one of the earliest pieces of literature to explore sexual politics in a patriarchial society.

The “Real” Clash of The Titans

Although we’ve seen Zeus lording over the fate of mortals below in countless movies, the story of how he came to claim the throne of the gods, is chock full of Freudian overtones. Zeus was the youngest child of Rhea and Cronus, then ruler of Olympus. Due to a prophecy from his own father, Uranus (who Cronos had overthrown as ruler) that he would be usurped by one of his offspring, he devoured his five children. Rhea secretly gave birth to Zeus in a hidden cave, and when Cronos came to claim the newborn, Rhea handed him a stone wrapped in a blanket, which Cronos quickly swallowed. When Zeus was a young man, he confronted Cronos and emptied the contents of his father’s stomach, freeing his five older siblings, including Hades and Poseidon. For the role of Zeus, look no further than actor Luke Evans, who brings a more youthful and sexier take on the Olympian king in Immortals.

Medusa

Known as one third of the Gorgon sisters, Medusa is one of the most reviled monsters in Greek mythology. While we know her fearsome appearance was a curse from the gods, the question is, did the punishment fit the crime? In some accounts, Medusa was a beautiful maiden punished by the goddess Athena for having sex with Poseidon in one of her temples. Other stories claim Medusa was raped by the sea god and even though she begged for mercy, was transformed into the snake-haired monster regardless.

The Odyssey

Shocking that one of the most epic tales in Greek mythology has never made it to the big screen. While there have been two TV miniseries, Odysseus’ tale of loss and perseverance has yet to fall into the hands of an A-list director. Odysseus is credited with coming up with the genius idea of the Trojan Horse, which helped to bring the war against Troy to a glorious end. The character did get some shine, portrayed by Sean Bean in 2004′s Troy. Bean is one of Hollywood’s underrated actors, as witnessed by his terrific turns in Lord of The Rings and “Game of Thrones.” Playing a king is clearly in his acting DNA–let’s give him a project worthy of his talents.

Medea

No, not to be confused with the gun-toting, weed smoking character from Tyler Perry plays and movies. Medea probably has the distinction of being the most tragic female character in Greek mythology. The granddaughter of the sun god Helios, Medea fell in love with Jason (yes of the Argonauts). In exchange for helping Jason get the Golden Fleece, Medea made Jason promise that he would take her away and marry her. When the time came for them to escape, Medea distracted her father by killing her brother, dismembering his body and scattering his parts throughout the country so her father would have to stop and retrieve them for proper burial. Jason kept his part of the bargain by marrying Medea and they had two sons together. Unfortunately the course of true love never runs smooth–when Jason dumped Medea for another woman, she killed her own children, and escaped in a chariot driven by dragons, sent courtesy of her grandfather. Medea gives new meaning to the saying, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.”

“PARIAH” Star Makes Hollywood’s NextGen 2011 List

Actress Adepero Oduye was an honoree at this year’s NextGen 2011 event this past weekend. The Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen list features a select group of 35 people working in the industry under the age of 35. Oduye was singled out for her riveting performance in Pariah, a moving story of a Brooklyn teenager coming to terms with her sexuality. Pariah has garnered strong reviews from various film festivals this year, including the prestigious Sundance and Toronto film fests. What advice does Oduye give to up and coming actors/actresses trying to make it in the business? “Stay yourself–what makes you unique, will make you stand out.”

Included in this year’s NextGen honorees was Pariah director Dee Rees; a former Spike Lee intern, Rees wrote the screenplay during her breaks while working on Inside Man.

Miles Davis Biopic To Hit The Big Screen

(via The Hollywood Reporter) Looks like Hollywood has finally gotten the memo on the lack of diversity on the big screen. Director George Tillman (Notorious, Soul Food) has been commissioned to develop and direct a film adaptation of jazz legend Miles Davis. The movie will be loosely based on the book, “Dark Magus: The Jekyll and Hyde Life of Miles Davis” written by his son, Gregory Davis. One of the producers of the project, Nick Davis Raynes said “Our intention is to make a feature film that will appeal beyond the worldwide audience of Miles Davis die-hard fans, to also include those who don’t know the first thing about the man, and introduce new ears to his music.”

Miles Davis was a musical genius and innovator, whose 50 year career included collaborations with other jazz greats like John Coltrane, Gil Evans and Charlie Parker. Although he fell into a heavy drug addiction which nearly ended his career, the legendary trumpeter/composer bounced back and continued blazing his own trail until his death in 1991.

Last week our friends at Moviefone.com hosted and open thread to discuss why attendance at the movies has been on the decline. After collecting comments via their message boards and social media they came up with five solid reasons why you aren’t going to the movies…as much.

1. Better Home Equipment
One of the bigger selling points to the current 3D movement was that it gave audiences something they couldn’t get at home. A good idea, in theory, but one that ignored a small issue: maybe what’s at home is better than anything offered at the multiplex. Extra dimensions or not.

“I also refuse to pay for 3D now, period,” wrote commenter Maureen Lucas. “Sadly, I noticed when watching ‘Transformers 3′ on Blu-ray last week that it looked better on my TV than [when I saw it in] non-3D movie theater.” Ticket prices are high enough as it is without 3D, but paying for something that – despite James Cameron’s protests — doesn’t really offer anything special to the viewing experience is a turn-off. Especially with home entertainment centers becoming so technically advanced.

Chris Tucker Ready To Return To Movies

Chris Tucker used to get it in as a movie star after appearing in blockbusters like the “Rush Hour” trilogy and other films (“Friday” is STILL hilarious). But we haven’t seen him in any roles since 2007 when he starred in “Rush Hour 3″ alongside Jackie Chan. Chris Tucker recently returned to his standup comic roots by doing some shows in comedy clubs, and it may not be long before we see him in another film.

According to MovieFone.com, Tucker is in talks with execs to co-star in two high-profile projects: ‘The Silver Linings Playbook” with Bradley Cooper and “Neighborhood Watch” with Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill.

Getting overpriced popcorn is a part of the experience of going to a movie. And even though the popcorn often looks like it’s been sitting there for days, the butter is going to clog your arteries, and the salt is going to raise your blood pressure, you still gotta have it!

According to the University of Southern California, people can’t help themselves from eating popcorn. And apparently it doesn’t matter if the popcorn is fresh or stale because it’s a habit for most of us to have it, and the people that run movie theaters know this.

2011 Urbanworld Film Festival Promises Eclectic Mix Of Titles

Closing out the summer film festival season will be the 2011 Urbanworld Film Festival in New York City next month.

As one of the country’s most prominent black film festivals, Urbanworld will open with Nelson George’s paean to his hometown, Brooklyn, NY. The film is titled Brooklyn Boheme. Diane Paragas co-directs the film bolstered by appearances from Spike Lee,Chris Rock, Branford Marsalis, Rosie Perez, and Saul Williams.

Recently, I spoke to Nelson about the film. From his description, Brooklyn Boheme sounded like an intriguing nostalgia trip. I’m definitely interested in attending a screening because I’ve lived in Brooklyn for about 6 years. I’ve loved every minute of it and I’m not planning on going anywhere anytime soon.

The closing night film will be Kinyarwanda, directed by Alrick Brown; an ensemble work that examines the Rwandan genocide from 6 different perspectives. This will be its New York premiere, after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won a World Cinema award. It will also be the second film released by AFFRM.

Filling in the slots between opening and closing night are films that include Victoria Mahoney’s Yelling To The Sky and Andrew Dosumnu’s Restless City. Make A Movie Like Spike, directed by Jamil Walker Smith and You, Me & The Circus by Ty Hodges will also be shown!
