has a storied career in hip-hop. After becoming one of the most prolific rhymers, the man born Lonnie Rashid Lynn has moved into the realm of acting. He’s starred with the likes of Denzel Washington, Jeremy Piven, and Queen Latifah. Before releasing his ninth studio album at the tail end of 2011, Common penned his memoir which landed on the New York Times’ Best Seller’s List. Being that the Chicagoan is becoming more known for his ventures outside of the recording booth, The Urban Daily gives you a list of ten of Common’s best songs to refresh your memory. Hit us in the comments and tell us what songs should’ve made the cut and which should have been ranked higher.

10. Between Me, You & Liberation

Common weaves three personal stories on this cut from 2002′s Electric Circus. “Between Me, You & Liberation”finds the Chicago MC telling of the effects of a woman being raped as a young child, feeling helpless as he watches a relative lose their bout with cancer, and confronting his homophobic notions when he finds out a longtime friend is gay. While the album was a flop, this track is the silver lining in that dark cloud.

9. They Say

By 2005, rap fans had written Common off. Instead of getting mad, he got even by making one of the best albums of his career with Be. “They Say”was a song aimed squarely at his detractors. The Chicago rhyme slinger addressed the hate e received for dealing with Erykah Badu and the dismal sales of Electric Circus. Kanye West provides the laid back production and lends a verse popping off at the people who didn’t believe he would make it as a rapper. “They Say”should be considered as the most mature and respectful diss record ever put on wax.

8. Resurrection

Common’s classic piano driven No I.D. produced track served as the turning point in his lyrical style. Gone was the misogyny found in “Heidi Hoe,” replaced by more thought provoking wordplay. Lonnie Lynn had smoothed out the rough edges on his previous effort and became known to the public. When Jay-Z said, “Truthfully, I wanna rhyme like Common Sense,” we suspect it was because of this song and album.

7. Come Close

“Come Close”is one of the flyest hip-hop love songs ever. Over a charming Neptunes production, Common bares his soul in the name of love. Some may call it soft, but what man doesn’t get mushy when experiencing that first true love? He proved vulnerability is endearing to women and above all else, honesty is key. Mary J. Blige on the hook only added to the song’s allure. Plus, who can forget the powerful video directed by Sanaa Hamri and Questlove?

6. Soul By The Pound (Remix)

If you were a teenager in 1992, you know “Soul By The Pound (Remix)”was the song that got Common Sense some fans. Before, if you asked anyone about Common Sense, people wouldn’t know you were talking about a rapper. Part of the appeal of the record were his pop culture references to Bruce Leroyand No I.D.’s boom bap instrumental. One thing not great on the record was Common Sense’s attempt at singing. We appreciated the effort, but were glad when he took to strictly rapping.

5. The Corner

The second single from Be reaffirmed the fact hip-hop as being the Black CNN. Common gets his town crier on by riddling his verses with the happenings of inner city living. With the corner as his stage, Common’s lyrics painted vivid pictures of our lives. Laid on top of a hard hitting Kanye West beat, “The Corner” was only elevated by the poetry of The Last Poets. At the time, there was nothing better.

4. Retrospect For Life

As the centerpiece of 1997′s One Day It’ll All Make Sense, “Retrospect For Life” is one of the most powerful songs created, hip-hop or otherwise. Featuring Lauryn Hill on the hook, “Retrospect For Life” weighs the options of getting an abortion and choosing to raise the child. Common’s lyrics placed a spotlight on some inconvenient truths in the black community. “It’s too many black women that can say they mothers but can’t say that they wives.” Fifteen years later, that statement is still the realest thing Common ever wrote.

3. The Dreamer

The opener to Common’s ninth disc, “The Dreamer” sets the tone for what is another superb album in the catalogue of the rapper turned actor. Having Maya Angelou deliver poignant poetry as only she can doesn’t hurt either. Upon hearing the track, it’s clear Common is appreciative of the life he has now. However, he still dreams of something greater. That something better would be better life experiences for his daughter than he had. What an awesome dream it is.

2. The Light

Hearing the title alone, conjures feelings of love, respect, and affection. Probably Common’s most popular song to the millenial generation, “The Light” showed civilians it was possible to find real love in world of smoke and mirrors called entertainment. Common’s second single off of Like Water For Chocolateis widely regarded as the beginning of Common’s crochet pants and incense days, thanks to his relationship with Erykah Badu. Though the relationship between the two ended, “The Light” stands as a beautiful moment in their romance.

1. I Used To Love H.E.R.

There is no other song to characterize hip-hop the way “I Used To Love H.E.R.” did. Common used a stellar No I.D. sampling of a George Benson track to give a narrative of how he saw hip-hop change since its beginning. While everyone appreciated the song, Ice Cube and other West Coast rappers weren’t amused at Common’s depiction of hip-hop once it hit their coast. Despite lyrics saying, “I wasn’t salty she was hanging with those boys in the hood,” Ice Cube and Westside Connection dissed the conscious MC. After Common dropped “The B***h In Yoo,” his pen went unchallenged. That is, until the whole “Canada Dry” situation came about.

Rap music has gone through its highs and lows. In 2011, rap was at its most polarizing. Whether the debate was to praise or condemn new rappers like Lil B and Tyler The Creator, rap has given the masses something to talk about for the past year.

One thing we can all agree on is there were some seriously stupid lyrics in songs. While we probably rapped right along with the silliness if the song knocked, it doesn’t change the fact that they lowered our collective IQs.

Take a look at some of the most popular songs of the year with ridiculous lines.

Kanye West – “Party”

“You a bad girl and your friends bad too/She got the swag sauce, she drippin’ swagu.”

First of all, ‘swag’ is one of the most overused words in hip-hop’s lexicon. We need to leave it in 2011 along with snapbacks. Secondly, swag sauce? Swagu? Really? I wonder is swagu only available to those who are able to plank on millions and destroy Maybachs for a measly four minute video clip. Swag sauce must be the drink of choice for Illuminati members because I have yet to see any mere mortals dripping with swagu.

Party

Drake - “I’m On One”

“Me and 40 back to work, but still smell like a vacation.”

That line is code for, “I haven’t washed my a** in months.” If that’s the case, someone tell Drake to come find me. I have a Shoprite Price Plus card he can use to get all the soap, wash cloths, and deodorant he needs to survive. In order to redeem himself of this filthy line, he must purify himself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. Who am I kidding, even the special powers of Lake Minnetonka can’t get rid of that much festering bacteria. However, I’m sure he’d be able to keep a woman and have to write pathetic love poems if he washed his ass sometimes.

Nicki Minaj – “Superbass”

“This one is for the boys with the boomin’ system/Top down, AC with the coolin’ system.”

“Superbass” was one of the biggest singles of the year. Partially, because of the melody and the speed at which Nicki Minaj rapped. With her rapping all fast, she slid that stupid line right past us. Why in the world would you have the top down and still have the air conditioner on?! I know she’s balling on a level most of us can’t, but gas prices are still high as all hell and you know she must drive something that posts terrible miles per gallon numbers. Someone find out if the Prius comes with a convertible top option. She’s going to need it.

Chris Brown - “Look At Me Now” “Oops, I said on my d**k/I ain’t really mean to say my d**k/But since we’re talking about my d**k/All you haters say hi to it”

This year was tumultuous for C. Breezy. He had his first number one album with F.A.M.E., but that was overshadowed when he threw a hissy fit and a chair at Good Morning America after being asked questions about beating up Rihanna. Why didn’t just respond to Robin Roberts with this line? Oh, because it’s dumb! Chris, the only people talking about your dick are groupies, fans whose thirst runneth over, and probably dudes like Antoine Dodson. Nobody else really cares. Lastly, fire whichever person who told you your raps were what the game was missing!

Dr. Dre - “I Need A Doctor”

“One more CD and I’m packing my bags I’m leaving/I’ll guarantee they’ll scream, Dre don’t leave us like that”

With this line, it’s obvious Dr. Dre is still living in the past. Had this song come out around 2000, it would be a different story. However, dude has had us waiting for Detox for 13 years. Nobody cares anymore. I respect him as one of the best producers ever, but last time I was checking for a Dr. Dre album, I was in middle school bumping “The Next Episode.” This new generation of hip-hop fans truly only know him for pushing expensive headphones. So if he packed his ghostwritten rap bags and left the booth, I’m sure nobody would notice.

I Need A Doctor

Wale - “Lotus Flower Bomb”

“I wanna enjoy the luxury of like not really knowing each other”

This line is stupid not because it it doesn’t make sense, but because of how it’s worded. The whole point of the hip-hop love song is to celebrate the period in a new relationship when you’re discovering new things about each other. I can vibe with that. So why would you tell a girl you’re pursuing that you want to enjoy the fact you don’t her. Most females I know would automatically dismiss a potential suitor because she would probably feel like he was just trying to smash. Fellas, don’t follow behind Wale. He might be able to get away with this because of who he is. You are not Wale, so don’t even try it.

Lotus Flower Bomb

Lil Wayne – “She Will”

“I tried to pay attention but attention paid me”

In all honesty, if I had a few months I wanted to waste on writing something truly mundane, I could write a book on all the dumb thing Weezy has said over the years. Weezy almost outdoes himself with “She Will.” Though many will brush this off as Wayne not able to rap that well anymore because he’s sober, I’m not buying it. I’ll chalk this line up to too many years of incestuous behavior with Baby. See what happens when you are getting kissed in the mouth by your daddy at almost 30? It is a proven fact incestuous behavior causes mental retardation. I’m just saying…

She Will

Andre 3000 – “Party” whole verse

3 Stacks gets called the male Lauryn Hill quite a bit. He might be entering his cuckoo-for-cocoa-puffs phase. On a song talking about partying and being with that special someone, Andre Benjamin manages to talk about making a woman climax, how old his son makes him feel, and shout his homeboys Butta and Cheese. Um, what the hell is he talking about?! This verse reminds me of the “In Living Color” skit when Damon Wayans is the guy in prison using big words without understanding the true definitions of the words. ‘The constipation of my dissertation is about the reciprocation of the nation!’ That last sentence made about as much sense as Andre 3000′s “Party” verse.

“If you aint got no a** b***h wear a poncho”

Young Money disciples, please do not try to defend this. Ponchos are made to protect your clothes from the rain. Why exactly would a female have to wear a poncho if she had a flat back with a crack? Plus, if we’re using “rack” as slang for a set of breasts, why would her not having a butt matter? Ah well, I don’t listen to his music anyway. Don’t know why I even said anything.

Rack City

I don’t like to criticize people who sell records, because I know how hard it is. But some of this stuff sounds crazy. There are so many collaborations where an artist doesn’t do a full song. You got a guy saying he’s top dog with 12 dudes on the verse. To have to deliver three verses in a record you have to be a beast. Having all these other people on the song is some b*llshit.

Yelawolf - “Throw It Up”

“Here the king of archery come, with that cracker d**k/ To f**k you in the p***y carpet you munch”

Yelawolf always said some off the wall crap in his lyrics, but this definitely takes the cake. The”king of archery” part is understandable. It’s crass, but understandable. However, the second half leaves me dazed and confused. The problem is he is talking to a man in the song so….yeah. Fall back Yela. That Eminem co-sign is only going to get you but so far. You have to do something better than this!

Throw It Up

Plies – “Just The Tip”

“We aint gotta do nothin/Let me put the head in/I won’t move for nothin though/I’m dead serious”

I am baffled as to how this guy got a record deal. His voice is irritating. As for this song, I just shake my head. I’ve heard R&B thugs beg for some bedroom attention, but rappers are always looking for a bigger and better deal. Plies is pleading just to get a whiff of her goods. If you have to do all of that, she most likely had no intentions of sleeping with you from jump. Begging to just put the tip in only solidifies you are a cornball and won’t find out what style Vicky Secrets she has on. Sidebar: ladies, if you allow a dude to convince you to let him stick the head in, I question the type of parental guidance you’ve had in your life.

In this edition of WTF news, Keyshia Cole’s outlandish mother, Frankie Lons, has finally released a music video for her track “Frankie Leg.” As you probably already imagined, it is wild. Rocking a belly shirt, Frankie shows the hood how the Frankie Leg is done. Apparently, it doesn’t really matter if you can’t move your legs because there are people in wheelchairs doing it too. I’m still scratching my head from that too.

As crazy as the clip is, I’m going to refrain from slinging any and all crack head slander. I mean she was on Celebrity Rehab, obviously there are more than a few issues there. Frankie, keep your talents off the web and out of the realm of singing and rapping. Keyshia, you should really do something about your mom! This is ridiculous!

Mobb Deep is back! The infamous duo flooded the block with their fresh EP, Black Cocaine. This track, “Water Boarding,” didn’t make the final cut, but it’s definitely a song you want to check out. How can you deny an Alchemist production with two of Queens’ finest spitting raw raps over it? Hopefully, the EP and “Water Boarding” will tide fans over until they drop a new album sometime in 2012.

When a reality television star realizes their five milliseconds of fame are almost depleted, they begin to get desperate to maintain some piece of the spotlight. The latest reality show cast member to try her hand at singing is Bad Girls Club 7 alum, Angie. She has delivered a clip for her single, “Baby, I’m A Bad Girl.” For those that don’t know, Angie is the spicy Latina who got her faced scratched in an argument over someone flipping her mattress.

The native New Yorker sings about what she knows best–using her body to get what she wants. Though the singing and video are as ratchet as ratchet can get, the one thing I was left wondering was how can auto-tune make someone with annoying voice sound worse. Angie’s speaking voice is a high pitched, nasally something. Here, it sounds 5,000 times worse. No word if she’s actively looking for a deal, but if she was, I’m sure she’d be laughed out of every record company this side of sanity. Angie, Cassie already is already occupying the pretty-face-weak-voice lane. Try something new.

Imagine this. You’re a 17-year-old Nigerian-American high school student from a small suburban town on the other side of the Hudson River. You find yourself singing for Jay-Z in your living room where he tells you, “You have a powerful voice, learn to control it and by 22-23 years old you will be good.” For the now 22-year-old Northwestern graduate, Rotimi Akinosho, that was a reality. Finally entering the age when Hov predicted he’d become big, Rotimi is making headway in achieving that dream.

Who Is The Boss Of Chicago?

Cast on the brand new Starz channel original series, “Boss”, which was renewed for a second season before the first episode aired. Rotimi is in the midst of establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. Not only an actor, Rotimi is a singer-songwriter with tracks featuring the likes of Dawn Richard of Dirty Money and Mickey Factz.

The Urban Daily got a chance to talk to the young triple threat about his role on the new hit series, why he didn’t think twice about playing a drug dealer, and his DJ Suss One and DJ Trauma hosted mixtape, While You Wait. Get to know an entertainer on the rise.

TUD: You’re on a brand new show, “Boss“. Is this your first major acting role on television?

RA: It was my first audition after graduating college, actually. My agent sent me down there and I didn’t know the magnitude of the audition.

How does it feel to have your first role to be working with Kelsey Grammer and Gus Van Sant? Mario Van Peebles just directed an episode. How does it feel to be working with these big names on the show?

It’s very humbling. At the same time, I know I’m blessed. Being the new guy, I’m able to learn so much about acting and just how to handle myself as a professional in the business. Already they’ve shown me little tricks to study lines better and how to be a better actor. When you’re around greatness, you kind of want to be that. Who better to follow than those three? It’s just an all around blessing and I’m looking forward to getting into season two.

With a great deal of the black community taking issue with most black actors only getting the parts of drug dealers and pimps, was there any hesitation on your part to take the role of a drug dealer?

No, I looked at the bigger picture. Being apart of possibly an Emmy award winning show weighed heavily. The creator, Farhad Safinia, really wanted to keep me from being the classic thug. He wanted to give my character depth. It doesn’t bother me because you don’t see me doing that. It’s only in episode one where it’s established that my character is a drug dealer, but the writers kept it tasteful. The focus is placed more on my relationship with Hannah Ware’s character. She plays Kelsey Grammer’s daughter, Emma. Our relationship and interaction is more of the story’s focus.

How have the viewers reacted to your character and story line?

They’ve been nothing but supportive. A lot of people have been saying, “I love that show! I would love it even if you weren’t on it, but you add a lot.” I get people telling me how proud they are of me. Everybody is just blown away because Boss came out of nowhere. I’m an R&B artist first. So getting respect for my acting is great. I’ve been getting some comments about my love scenes, so it’s all love being shown. [laughs] I’m just glad to get my name out there and I’m going to keep going.

From the viewer’s perspective, what do you think of the relationship between your character, Darius and Emma?

The relationship between Darius and Emma is very complex. There are many different layers and it goes in phases. She needs him for something and he views her as his escape from what he does on the street. Emma sees Darius has the pharmaceuticals to supply her hospital and you’ll see in future episodes what else she asks him to do for her. Darius is curious about her. It’s complex and maybe a little controversial, but it happens everyday.

From the three episodes that have aired, I kind of don’t know how to take your character. Darius cares for his grandfather, but he’s a drug dealer. Then, he stops Emma from relapsing with cocaine. So I don’t know how to feel about Darius right now.

Well, you know, I start falling for her, man. She starts…I don’t want to ruin it for you. Just know that I start falling for her and things start coming from left field that you’d never expect.

Will your role be expanded for next season?

Yeah, I’ll definitely have a bigger part next season. It was just that when we started filming the first season, they didn’t know what to expect because I was the new guy. The writers didn’t know how much they could write for me. They realized I can hold my own. So going forward, I’m going to have a bigger part in the series.

Will you and Kelsey Grammer’s character get to interact in any scenes in future episodes?

Yes.

That would be a waste if you guys didn’t get to have an intense face off or something.

How did you know, man?! [laughs] You’re right on the money with that one.We have an intense stare off. He realizes who I am and I realize who he is and it gets interesting. It had to happen. Darius is a black kid messing with the mayor of Chicago’s daughter.

You mentioned earlier that you’re also a singer. Do you write your own material too?

Yeah, I do. The majority of all my music is all me. I’ve been able to work with some pretty good songwriters, but I write most of it myself. I play the piano. My parents had me taking piano and I hated it. I fell off with it, but it’s one of those things you look back on and wish you would have stuck it out.

Man, you could have been getting your John Legend on right now.

I know, man, I beat myself up over it everyday. [laughs]

How would you describe you sound?

With my music, I think you can expect authenticity. I take pride in writing songs where people can relate to the story. It’s real. I don’t like doing surface level music. The best songs are the ones with stories that people can relate to and that’s what I try to put out there. I dropped a mixtape called The Resume earlier this year and my new mixtape, While You Wait, is out now. I’m really excited about it.

How do you find time to work on Boss and record music?

It’s a sacrifice. I always say, “Work hard now so you can play harder later.” I sacrifice a lot of the going out and things a 22 years old would do, in order to work on my craft. I want to focus on my music and my acting and getting better at both.

Are you actively pursuing a record deal or are you taking the independent route?

Right now, I’m taking the independent route. It will take the right situation for me to sign to a label. I’d love to have a big machine behind me. Let’s just say I’d love to have a major label deal, but if not, we’ll be able to handle it independently.

Boss airs every Friday on the Starz Channelat 10 pm. Check out Rotimi’s music here.

Russell Simmons stopped by VH1′s “Big Morning Buzz Live” earlier today to discuss Heavy D’s influence on hip-hop. Simmons goes on to say “Heavy was the first R&B rapper to be accepted. They built Uptown records and the new jack swing sound on his ideas.”

Heavy D passed away yesterday at the age of 44.

If you’re Idris Elba, you head down to the beaches of San Juan, Puerto Rico and shoot a music video, and indulge in some some very seductive body painting. Produced by music wunderkind 9th Wonder, “Private Garden” is a jazzy blend of hip-hop, soul, and reggae, from his 2010 EP ” High Class Problems Vol. 1.” Shout out to video director Crystle “Clear” Roberson for the stunning visuals!

Tracy Marrow aka Ice -T is one of hip hop’s most famous renaissance men. Starting out as a street pimp, Ice has made his mark in a plethora of avenues in the entertainment industry. After a successful and controversial music career, Marrow took a stab at acting. He hasn’t looked back since. In an ironic twist, the man who wrote songs slamming the police for their unjust treatment of minorities has added minutes onto his 15 by playing a slew of cops in various television shows and movies. For the past 10 years, Ice has had a supporting role on the NBC hit, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. As a former narc, Odafin Tutuola, Ice-T has won two NAACP Image Awards for his portrayal. Although he’s lived his life as an open book, we’re going to hedge our bets and say you probably don’t know everything there is to know about the man known as Ice-T. Take a look a few facts we unearthed.

1. New Jersey is Ice-T’s birthplace.

Despite repping L.A. to the death, Ice-T first appeared on the planet in Newark, New Jersey. He wasn’t a resident of Jersey for long so that is the main reason he doesn’t mention it much. In an interview he elucidated, “I was born in Newark, New Jersey, but I went to school in L.A. So ain’t no sense in claiming New Jersey. I didn’t run the streets there.”

2. Ice-T served in the Army.

By the time Marrow thought about joining the Army, he had a daughter to take care of. His stealing of car stereos and selling marijuana didn’t put a dent in the bills he had piling up. Marrow decided to enlist once he heard of the financial rewards that came along with enlisting. Ice served in the 25th Infantry and was honorably discharged. He reflected on that period saying, “I did four years in the military. And when I came out of the military, I got right into trouble.”

3. He hates the movies Breakin and Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Ice-T told Aimee Mann to eat a hot bowl of dicks when she expressed her distaste for his acting abilities on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. As angry as he got at her for slamming him, he was harsher on his earlier acting roles. Ice has stated in numerous interviews how bad he thinks those Breakin movies were. He said the films were wack and his acting was worse. We’ll say his acting in Breakin was better than whatever he’d like to say he was doing in Leprechaun in the Hood.

4. Ice-T shares a Grammy with Quincy Jones and Ray Charles.

In 1991, Quincy Jones brought together an elite group of artists for an track called, “Back On The Block.” Among the artists featured on the song are greats like Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe Dee, Ray Charles, and Melle Mel. Jones’ vision for the project was to bridge the gap between soul, funk, and rap. While any other musician would treat their Grammy like a prized possession, Ice showed that wasn’t the case for him. When he allowed into his home for MTV Cribs, we saw the Grammy broken sitting on the kitchen counter. How’s that for anti-establishment?

5. The last five albums Ice-T has dropped have been on his own label, Rhyme Syndicate/Coroner Records.

We all remember the controversy surrounding Ice when he released “Cop Killer.” After coming under fire from his label, Warner Brothers Records, and the American public, Ice started his own label. Rhyme Syndicate which later became Coroner Records was behind the delivery of albums such as O.G. Original Gangster. Pimpin’ might not be easy, but he has made handling business look that way.

When Jay-Z and Kanye West dropped “Otis,” the rap world was set ablaze. People talked about the mediocre remixes that were sure to follow. California MC, Game, hasn’t done a remix. He’s delivered a half baked diss record. I’m not exactly sure who this is aimed at considering he goes from taking shots at Jay-Z and other rappers to rhyming about having a woman sit on his face while using portions of Big Sean’s hit, “My Last.” Game then jacks the melody from Frank Ocean’s “Novacane” to spit more irrelevant lines about irrelevant subjects. With his R.E.D. album being delayed time after time, does Game really have room to talk? At least the guys he’s taking aim at are posting some sort of numbers. A diss record from Game would be cool if this were 2005. Take a listen and hit us with your review of the track.

Picture this: You are a singer signed to label that houses artists like Beyonce and John Legend. On your debut, they pair you with successful producers and musicians like Raphael Saadiq and Salaam Remi and you have a smash single, “The River.” Sound too good to be true? If you’re Noel Gourdin, it was.

Although he has a chart topping R&B single, fans recognized the song and not the singer with a silky tenor and crisp falsetto. I caught up with Noel to talk about his new album Fresh: The Drefinition, the camaraderie of R&B musicians, and his favorite female vocalists in the game.

Fresh:The Definition is your second album out. How is it different from your first?

I’d have to say it’s a lot more live instrumentation this time around. From the drums to the bass guitar and grand piano and horns. It was just something I really wanted to have apart of this album. I really wanted to do it on the first album, After My Time, with Sony. But this time I wanted to make an earnest effort to get that pure production value into it. I wanted it to be reminiscent of classic soul music. Another thing was being able to have more creative freedom. There was a more tight knit group of writers for this project. There were five including myself. I feel this album is more me.

How did your personal trials and tribulations between your two albums add to the musicality of the new album?

After leaving Sony, I did have a rough patch. I went into a depression. I fell out of touch with God and stopped praying. I even fell out of touch with my family for a large part of time. For people who know me, that’s not me. I’m very family oriented. They had an intervention for me where they told me, “You have to pick yourself up, get back in the studio, and start writing again.” But being able to get back on the horse was a big step for me. Overcoming depression and being able to do what I felt was true to the album made me feel good. Those trials have contributed to my growth, not only as an artist, but as a man. This album allowed me to put the rejuvenated spirit I had into my music. The title is Fresh: The Definition because I wanted this to be a fresh start for my career and life.

You seem to have a genuine love for soul/R&B music. What are your thoughts on the condition it’s in now? The Gramm

ys are cutting out a lot of awards for you guys and the feeling of soul music isn’t what it used to be. How do you feel about that?

It’s disheartening. All the music getting love and the spotlight is like that electronic style. A lot of the lyrics aren’t particularly for young kids. I don’t want my nieces and nephews listening to most of the stuff that’s on the radio. I can only speak for myself, but I’m sure other artists in my genre feel the same way. We make music, for the most part, that’s clean. A vast majority of people can listen to our music. It’s respectful and tasteful. We, as R&B singers, have a tough challenge. It’s going to take a movement. It’s not up to one artist or one fan. We have to band together and keep this music alive because it is so important. A lot of people say it’s purely entertainment, but it’s not. When you have people back in the sixties and seventies whose records started baby booms. That’s not entertainment, that’s a way of life. The music from that time will never die and it’s kind of scary to think of what our kids are going to be listening to 25 years down the line.

You spoke of artists needing to band together in order to keep the music alive. What is the camaraderie like between R&B artists?

For the most part, people I’ve run into have been great. Running into people on the road like Eric Benet, Anthony David, Rahsaan Patterson has been really good. The camaraderie between most artists is great. You know, you have a select few who I choose not to be around too much. [laughs] I think this music is bigger than that–bigger than the egos. I think we can get past all of that and band together more to get soul music where it needs to be.

Your first single from the album is “Beautiful.” That record contains a positive message towards women. How do you feel about the objectification and the hypersexualization of women in videos and in the industry as a whole?

I think it starts with the self respect type of thing. It’s not right to treat a woman a certain way based on what she’s wearing and all of that, but it’s a self respect issue. If they continue to allow themselves to be objectified, it will continue to happen. It is what it is. Sex sells. It really does. Personally, I will not jeopardize the integrity of my music and artistry. Like I said before, I want to be respectful and tasteful. I want my grand mama to be able to enjoy my work. So it’s very important to me to not be condescending or disrespectful to women in my music. I still feel self respect is the main issue because there are some records out there with the rudest lyrics towards women and women are out there reciting all the words, putting themselves down.

Because you make clean music is it harder to get played on a mainstream hip hop/R&B radio station?

It’s tough. “Beautiful” was number three on the Adult Contemporary charts. I’ve come to realize I’m not a hip hop/R&B radio type of artist. I’m more of a classic soul and today’s R&B type of guy. Should a record like “Beautiful” be played on a hip hop/R&B type station? Yes, because it’s got a positive message. However, the positivity of the music isn’t accepted as much as everything else. But I’ll just continue to make music that I feel from the heart and soul. I just hope things will get better.

What was it like having your debut single, “The River” become a big song and sort of overshadow you as a person and artist?

I made it a conscious effort to bridge the gap between the my first album and second album. I wanted to let people know that was me singing “The River” because when I go and do shows and sound check “The River,” people are always like, “Oh, that’s him?! He’s the guy that sings that?!” [laughs] So I’ve run into Anthony Hamilton and Jaheim on the road and they have both said, “Noel, a lot of people think that I’m the one that sings ‘The River.’” I always reply, “Damn man, you trying to take the hits!” That’s our running joke.

Personally, I like Fresh: The Definition more so than After My Time. Conceptually, it felt like After My Time was more about a young man trying to find his way in love and relationships. Fresh: The Definition is more the man finding that type of love he’s been searching for and not accepting anything less.

Exactly. You are absolutely right. It definitely shows growth, not only as an artist but as a man. That was the vision we had when we sat down with the writers and talked about the project. It was great to have that come to fruition.

When I told some of my female friends I was interviewing you, they were like, “His voice just makes me want to fall in love.” They said other things I won’t be repeating. Just know it’s all good stuff. [laughs] But which female vocalists have that effect on you?

[laughs] Jazmine Sullivan. Just the conviction she sings with is incredible. I know she’s taking a little hiatus, but I’m hoping she comes back. The game needs voices and talents like her. Lalah Hathaway has an incredible voice. Ledisi’s voice is amazing. She has a classic feel to her voice which I love. Gladys Knight’s voice is crazy. She’s still got it. It just blows you away. Also, I’d have to say Miss Jill Scott and Faith Evans. Those voices are from the heart and soul. You know they’re doing the right thing with their lives by the way they make people feel.

Speaking of Jazmine Sullivan, right when she went on her hiatus she said she always told herself she would stop performing when it stopped being fun. Obviously, she’s stopped doing music for the time being. What advice would you give her to help her rediscover her love for music?

I understand what she means. It’ a personal thing. I just think she is so talented. The legacy she will leave is already impactful, even if she never makes another record. Imagine how much more impactful her legacy would be like if she came back. We need her. She’s one of the front runners leading soul music. The industry needs her. Our genre needs her back. I believe she will come back because this music is her passion and I think being away from it is going to eat right through her. I’m waiting on her next project, whenever it comes, because it’s going to be special. Come on back, Jazmine!

Despite what you’ve heard, Black people are the world’s taste makers. We are the ones who say what’s hot or not. Once it becomes popular in our community, mainstream picks it up and runs away with it. Think about it. Big lips weren’t in style until Angelina Jolie had them. You and I both know plenty of black people who been had those features. The same can be said about black music. Rock & Roll was originated by black musicians and then was snatched out of our hands. Though many mainstream artists jack elements of R&B for their pop records, some mainstream artists blend the two together, which brings us to our list of top 10 blue eyed soul singers.

10. George Michael

Before he became infamous for abusing the nose candy and soliciting sex in public restrooms, George Michael was the melanin free artist of choice. Michael crafted pop songs only to add soulful inflections with his voice. He’s recorded duets with two of Black music’s biggest divas. He and Aretha Franklin had a smash with 1986′s “I Knew You Were Waiting.” In 1999, Whitney Houston recruited him for “If I Told You That.” If you’re giving me side eye for putting him on the list, you should be aware his massive hit, “Careless Whisper” has been covered by everyone from Brian McKnight to Tamia.

Careless Whisper

9. Joss Stone

The talent and vocal prowess of this British import have recently been overshadowed by reports of a deranged man’s plot to end her life. On a lighter note, Stone was introduced to American audiences with the multi-platinum disc, The Soul Sessions. That was a collection of obscure soul covers with the leading single being a ?uestlove assisted cover of The White Stripes’ “Fell In Love With A Girl.” Her follow up album paired her with producers like Novel and Raphael Saadiq. Stone also has the distinction of being the first artist to get Lauryn Hill on a track after her self imposed hiatus. Don’t believe me, check out “Music.”

Fell In Love With A Boy

8. Michael McDonald

If there was any white musician who has broken down barriers in the soul music arena, it would be Michael McDonald. Starting out as a session vocalist, McDonald was recruited by The Doobie Brothers. He wrote and sang lead on their most successful song, “What A Fool Believes.” Michael won two Grammys for the ubiquitous single. Subsequently, Patti LaBelle and McDonald worked together on her 1987 hit,“On My Own.” Sensing soul music’s appreciation dwindling, Michael has been releasing soul cover albums since 2003.

What A Fool Believes

7. Hall & Oates

These two men had the eighties blue eyed soul movement on lock. Daryl Hall and John Oates made pop music but infused the soul of their hometown, Philadelphia, into every song. No matter what you say, “I Can’t Go For That” still gets heavy spins in the soul community. The title has even entered our lexicon. De La Soul sampled the duo’s work for “Say No Go” off of the seminal, 3 Feet High And Rising. Due to their hits and the samples, Hall & Oates were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. In addition to the immense accolades, Billboard Magazine placed them a number 15 on their 100 Greatest Artists Of All Time. Can’t argue with that.

Private Eyes

6. Jon B.

This Rhode Island native sounded so much like a brotha when he hit the scene, many thought he was Puerto Rican instead of white. Babyface’s duet with him,“Someone To Love,” had fans comparing the two singers. Jon B.’s biggest it s came in 1997. “They Don’t Know” helped catapult Cool Relax to the top of the album sales charts for the year. After a few personal and professional setbacks, Jon took time off to regroup and be with his wife and family. He’s currently in the studio working on a new album.

They Don’t Know

5. Robin Thicke

Not only is he one of the most popular R&B singers of our time, he is married to one of the baddest chicks in the game. Paula Patton’s husband has crafted hits for Usher, Brandy, and Lil Wayne. Robin popped up on everyone’s radar when his song, “When I Get You Alone” was used in a Sprite commercial back in 2001. An album was released then, but sales were less than stellar. After securing a deal with Interscope Records, Robin Thicke dropped The Evolution of Robin Thicke. That set featured the smooth “Lost Without You” and then odd pairing of Thicke and Weezy on “Shooter.” Robin Thicke continues to write for other artists as well as crafting his next project. We’re sure it’s going to be the perfect soundtrack for sexy time sessions.

When I Get You Alone

4. Bee Gees

Don’t you even try to act like you haven’t bumped one of heir songs at least once! Matter of fact, you can’t say that. If you happen to enjoy Wyclef’s “We Tryin’ To Stay Alive,” thank the Bee Gees. Sing Destiny’s Child’s “Emotions” at a karaoke bar when you’ve had more than three drinks? Blame the Brothers Gibb. They wrote, arranged, and produced the original versions of the aforementioned songs. However, for every triumph, their family has experienced extensive tribulations. The youngest Gibb, Andy, died in March of 1988 due to an inflamed heart brought on by a viral infection. When member, Maurice Gibb died unexpectedly, the remaining members ended the group. In 2009, the two reformed the group. Cheers to starting over.

How Deep Is Your Love

3. Amy Winehouse

Say what you will about the alcoholism and ridiculous behavior, but home girl can sing. Amy Winehouse blended the techniques and vocal stylings of yesterday’s jazz singers and today’s in your face song writing to create a masterpiece. Back To Black is the album you put on when you’re feeling some type of way about a breakup. As depressing as Back To Black is, her first album, Frank, shows glimpses of hope when it comes to finding happiness. After her most recent live show debacle, Amy is back to recovering from her hard partying lifestyle. Get well soon.

Tears Dry On Their Own

2. Adele

Despite the fact Adele has a better voice than most singers out, I’m sure I’ll get people asking me why Adele is so high on the list when she only has two albums. The reason is because both of her efforts have been among the best selling of the year they hit shelves. The latest, 21, has broken digital album sales records. Plus, Adele’s most recent album has been a major component of helping records sales head in an upward trend. As for her debut, 19, that disc garnered Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. If that isn’t isn’t enough, you need to seek professional help. No, seriously. Seek professional help if you don’t vibe with Adele’s music.

Turning Tables

1. Teena Marie

Nothing really needs to be said in defense of Teena Marie being number one. After all, we gave her the title of the Ivory Queen of Soul. The partnership of her and Rick James yielded one of the best duets ever created. “Fire and Desire” still sounds fresh in this day and age. Her solo hits like “Square Biz” still possess the power to make people gravitate towards the dance floor. Although she passed at closing of last year, Teena Marie’s music lives on and will continue to move the crowd for our children and their children.

Lovergirl

When it comes to breaking records in the hip hop arena, Eminem is the man to beat. Besides selling millions of albums in a rapidly declining industry, Em is one of two rappers to have won the Best Rap Album Grammy each time they’ve released a disc. The other person in that club is Kanye West. Today marks another milestone in the career of the Detroit rapper. It was announced that after being released about a year ago, Recovery is the first album to sell a million digital copies.

Interscope’s Vice Chairman Steve Berman stated, “Recovery selling one million digital albums is an incredible achievement by an incredible artist. I have had the pleasure of working with Eminem throughout the course of his career, and I’m delighted to be a part of yet another milestone on his amazing journey.”

Em’s manager, Paul Rosenberg added, “We are thrilled to congratulate Eminem on the history-making digital sales success of Recovery. Over the years we’ve made a concerted effort to engage Em’s online fan base so this achievement is especially rewarding. Eminem made an amazing album with Recovery and the fans responded in record numbers.”

You know how the saying goes, “Men lie. women lie. numbers don’t.” Congratulations Eminem.

After recently signing to Maybach Music Group, Teedra Moses has dropped a new mixtape. Luxurious Undergrind is more of the Teedra we love. The collection of R&B grooves is meant to tide fans over until her sophomore disc hits the streets.

Many praised Moses for her 2004 debut, Complex Simplicity. In the midst of working on the follow up disc, TVT Records closed its doors. The dissolution of TVT Records left Teedra, among others, high and dry. Never to be the damsel in distress, Teedra bided her time by touring extensively and penning songs for artists like Mary J. Blige and Christina Milian. Her other mixtapes have been well received also. Rick Ross signed her to Maybach Music Group earlier in the year because he considers her to be his personal Anita Baker. Word around town is The Lioness, her sophomore effort, will land on shelves at the top of 2012. Until then, the mixtape is all yours.

When you hear the term ‘freedom fighter,’ civil rights activists are the images conjured in your brain. This time around we’re turning the term on its ear. The people on our list are artists who’ve fought to be released from their contracts at their record labels. The reasons why musicians and record executives argue range from minute details to the direction of an artist’s career. It’s like a divorce and the mass public is the child. We’re asked to pick sides. After reading, hit the comment section and tell us who’s side you’re on–the artist’s or the company’s.

10. Ciara vs. Jive Records

Following countless delays, Ciara decided she had had enough of the setbacks Jive placed in front of her. She took to her Facebook page to complain about the label’s lack of promotion. Ciara stated she had to pay to promote her single, “Gimme Dat,” out of her own pocket. Jive’s lack of faith in the Atlanta singer/songwriter led her to request for their contract to be terminated. A few weeks later, Ciara’s name disappeared from Jive’s roster of talent and her website, Ciarasworld.com, had been shut down. The virtual erasing of Ciara’s ties with Jive led many to speculate she had been dropped. After all, those rumors were floating around before Ciara decided to blast them on her Facebook page. Inquiring minds are still searching for details concerning the deterioration of their relationship.

9. Jill Scott vs. Hidden Beach Recordings

Our soul sista, Jill Scott has had a seemingly controversy free. Our love affair with Jill almost came to a screeching halt earlier this year when she and Hidden Beach Recordings were embroiled in a nasty lawsuit. The label’s head honcho claimed the neo-soul singer stopped recording for the company before her six album deal had expired. Scott countersued citing Steve McKeever, the label head, cost her millions in profits. Before the situation could get out of hand, the two came to an agreement. Jill was allowed to leave and signed a deal with Warner Brothers Records, which distributed her fourth effort. Hidden Beach will release a 10 song project entitled “Just Before Dawn: Jill Scott From The Vault, Vol. 1.” Why can’t cooler heads prevail in all of these situations?

8. The Clipse vs. Jive Records

In 2003, One of the casualties of the merger between BMG and Sony Music Entertainment was The Clipse. Signed to Pharrell’s Star Trak imprint, the Virginia rap duo was legally forced to stay on Jive when Star Trak moved its distribution deal over to Interscope. Jive, known more for having success with pop acts, allowed The Clipse to finish working on their second album without having any intention of delivering it to the public. Tensions between the group and the label mounted until Malice and Pusha T asked for a formal release. When Jive denied their request, The Clipse took the issue to court. As litigation took place, the duo started dropping the mixtape series, We Got It 4 Cheap. By the end of 2006, Jive relented by releasing Hell Hath No Fury, in conjunction with The Clipse’s Re-Up Records.

7. 112 vs. Bad Boy Records

People question how Diddy can be a label executive when he wants to be an artist himself. That has been the basis of quite a few artists leaving Bad Boy Records. 112 was one of the biggest male R&B groups in the late 90s and early 2000s. After having a hit album with Part III, the boys of 112 decided they were men and needed to take a stand. Slim, Q, Mike, and Daron felt Bad Boy no longer suited the mature adults they’d become. Despite all parties’ calling the decision amicable, many believed 112 signed with Def Soul for more creative control over future projects. Being the legal gangster he is, Diddy worked out a deal to where 112 would be represented by both companies for the release of Pleasure & Pain. Amid rumors of internal strife, 112 parted ways in 2007 and Def Jam dropped them from their roster.

6. JoJo vs. Da Family Entertainment

In 2006, JoJo was at the top of her game. She had a Top 10 hit with “Too Little, Too Late” and was crafting tracks for her next album. By 2009, new songs hadn’t materialized. JoJo posted messages on her Myspace page informing her fans it was Da Family Entertainment who was holding up the new disc. Later that year, she filed a lawsuit against the boutique company. The singer alleged her label wouldn’t let her out of her contract or allow her in the studio to record new songs. An agreement was finally reached in January of 2010. JoJo’s future albums would be distributed through Interscope Records. If you’re wondering where the new album is, it’s slated to hit shelves this coming fall.

5. Consequence vs. G.O.O.D. Music

The beef between Kanye West and Consequence is a personal one that spilled over into business. When Kanye debuted in 2004, Consequence was there. He helped with lyrics and concepts for each of Kanye’s works, save My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. While the squabbles between the two remained under wraps for a moment, Consequence grew tired of playing a secondary role when he was promised a starring one. Cons has alleged he hasn’t received credit for the work he contributed to West’s albums. Another thorn in the side of this relationship is Consequence’s sophomore disc being delayed by Kanye and Q-Tip’s dragging of their feet. Consequence has left G.O.O.D. Music and created his own label called Band Camp. To add insult to injury, he changed the title of his next album from Cons TV to Get Even. I wonder who’s the target for that dagger.

4. Faith Evans vs. Bad Boy Records

As one of the flagship artists on Diddy’s label, Faith Evans wasn’t as big a name she should have been. Faith recorded some of the biggest R&B hits for the company. the issue for her was the same issue 112 had with Sean Combs. She felt there was a conflict of interest. How could the person supposed to guide your career do their job effectively when they were trying to be and artist themselves? After the moderate success that was the Faithfully album, Faith made history by becoming the first contemporary R&B singer contracted to Capitol Records.

3. The Lox vs. Bad Boy Records

When you talk about being out of place, The Lox signing with Bad Boy Records is prime example. The Lox found themselves fighting to be rid of the Bad Boy image. Shiny suits and big budgeted video didn’t fit the rugged outlook of the Yonkers rap trio. Jadakiss, Styles P, and Sheek Louch wanted to work with Ruff Ryders label because they had a harder image which fit The Lox’s attitude. After venturing down all legal avenues to no avail, they took it to the streets. The group started a grassroots movement with t-shirts emblazoned with “Let The Lox Go.” Diddy relented, yet kept some of their money from their future earnings.

2. Michael Jackson vs. Sony Music

Michael Jackson’s last full length album he recorded was the 2001 disc, Invincible. Before its release, Jackson and Sony were at odds over the artist’s master recordings. Michael was supposed to receive the masters to all of his work in 2000. However, there were clauses in the agreement which made sure Jackson didn’t get his masters for another 20 years. MJ discovered the lawyer representing him in the matter also worked for Sony. After unearthing the shady practices of Sony Music, Michael sought an early exit from his contract. When Jackson informed the label he was leaving the company after Invincible was finished being promoted, Sony suspended all promotions for the project.

1. Prince vs. Warner Brothers Records

Prince has never been one to shy away from controversy–be it rocking chaps with the butt cut out on national television. One of the most attention grabbing moments in Prince’s career was when he etched ‘slave’ in his face when he began to feel Warner Brothers was stifling his creativity. When Warner Brothers wouldn’t let Prince out of his contract, he began dropping albums in rapid succession to fill the requirements of his deal. How’s that for there being more than one way to skin a cat?
