NBA Announces All-Star Game Starters

The weekend basketball fans and groupies wait a whole year for is fast approaching. NBA All-Star Weekend begins February 24th. The starting players are familiar faces. Team West is majority from Los Angeles. Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum, Blake Griffin, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul are sure to post serious numbers in effort to walk away with the win. Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, and LeBron James will have to create some sort of chemistry to bring the title to the East.

Hopefully, the starters can avoid the groupie love and keep their focus on the game. Tune into TNT on Sunday February 26th at 6pm to watch it play out.

Just days after LeBron James did his best human pogo stick imitation over Bulls guard John Lucas, III, Blake Griffin may have sent Thunder Center Kendrick Perkins into therapy.

During the third quarter of the Clippers-Thunder game on Monday night, the reigning NBA Slam Dunk champion rose up and “Mozgov’d” Kendrick Perkins–drawing comparisons to his domination of then-Knicks center Timofey Mozgov in 2010 and LeBron’s dunk from the other night.

Watch the clip and tell us if this isn’t the dunk of the year so far.

In what was most likely a preview of the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals, LeBron James and the Miami Heat looked to send a message to the Chicago Bulls. On the way to a 97 to 93 win at American Airlines Arena LeBron made a step ladder out of an unsuspecting John Lucas, III.

The 5’11 guard was victimized in the first quarter when LeBron caught an alley-oop pass from D-Wade and the “King” leapt OVER him on his way to the basket. It was two of 35 points James scored on the night. Watch the embarrassment below.

Last night the Orlando Magic were hit with another embarrassing loss, this time falling 93-67 to the New Orleans Hornets.

It’s always interesting when recently retired players become sports commentators. With memories of the court or field still fresh in their heads, they haven’t quite developed the level of objectivity of some of their peers.

Since retiring from the NBA Shaquille O’Neal has become an analyst for TNT. When recently asked to name the best Center in the NBA “The Diesel” bestowed that honor on Lakers big man Andrew Bynum. However, in a head-to-head match up with Orlando Magic Center Dwight Howard (the man many would consider the best center) Bynum came up short.

Howard got the best of Bynum, finishing with 21 points, 23 rebounds and one blocked shot to Bynum’s 10 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks in the win. For the season Howard is averaging 20 pts, 16 rebounds ad 2.3 blocks to Bynum’s 15 pts, 13 rebounds and 1.9 blocks.

So what did Dwight have to say in response to Shaq?

“He’s mad about ‘Superman,’” Howard said referring to his Slam Dunk contest routine from 2008. “I didn’t know he made it up. I didn’t know Superman came from Shaquille O’Neal.”

Superman was one of several nicknames Shaquille O’Neal used during his career, flaunting a Kryptonian “S” tattoo on his bicep. But Howard doesn’t care.

“I would suggest he’d just sit down and get on with his life,” Dwight added. “He don’t play no more, so what’s the point of talking trash? It’s not like we’re wrestlers and we get to battle it out. Who cares?”

Earlier today the Dallas Mavericks, the NBA’s 2010-11 season champions visited President Barack Obama at the White House. In attendance for the annual meeting held in honor of the hoop champs was leader Dirk Nowitzki, point guard Jason Kidd, and others teammates. Well, except for backup Delonte West.

West, a troubled D.C. native, actually signed with the Mavs over the summer and wasn’t a member of the team during their run last season. But the reason he missed the chance meeting with President Obama had nothing to do with that. Though the U.S. Secret Service won’t confirm it, reports are swirling that West was not allowed to join his team because he was arrested for gun possession in 2009, failing a background check of sorts.

“The individual in question was never someone that would not be permitted to attend the event today,” Secret Service agent Edwin Donovan told ABC News. “He is on the list for entry today and was never advised otherwise to my knowledge.”

However West himself seems to believe he was blackballed on the count of the ’09 charges. “That’s what happens when you make bad decisions in your life,” West said over the weekend, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “You can’t go to the White House.”

West is laughing the loss off and keeping the fodder light. “It’s going to be a shame the president isn’t going to get a chance to meet me,” West said. “I’m the president of my house.”

During a loss to the Denver Nuggets Kobe Bryant still found his way into the record books. Bryant scored 16 points to become the sixth player in NBA history to score 28,000 career points. He is first among active players and is 584 points behind former teammate Shaquille O’Neal.

Bryant came into the Sunday game needing just four points to reach 28,000, but he didn’t get it until he hit a free throw with 10:43 left in the third quarter.

The Lakers fell to the Nuggets 99 to 90 bringing their record on the season to 3 wins and 3 losses.

On maintaining his energy level…

“Energy is something you can control. In everything you do, you’re going to face people more talented than you. I set myself apart by bringing more energy than they do.”

“I constantly heard that all I do is dunk…And I can understand it. There aren’t SportsCenter clips of me shooting 15-footers.”

His most proud game from last season against the Pacers…

“Most of my baskets came from midrange jumpers…I was the finesse player people said I couldn’t be. I’m excited to show how I’ve added to that part of my game.”

How he recovers from injury…

“There were days when I didn’t feel like going through the same routine…But I learned that if you’re positive, any situation can be a chance to improve yourself.”

The importance of being a team player…

“I recently got to talk to Magic Johnson…He said he used to tell individual teammates, ‘Come in before practice and work with me.’ He emphasized that being a leader isn’t about just pushing yourself. It’s also about motivating teammates.”

Surrounded by almost as much hype as the day Watch The Throne came out, NBA kicked off it’s shortened season on Christmas Day. What better gift could a sports fan ask for? After a long period without basketball, every tip off when off without a hitch, minus the Kevin Garnett situation. Our friends at The Smoking Section poisted a piece featuring ten random observations amidst the NBA’s Christmas Day Marathon. Check out an exerpt:

As much as I try, hating on the Mavericks is impossible. I credit it to actually getting a chance to meet Mark Cuban, Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry while I attended Georgetown, but there’s no true cause for concern just yet. They’re an older team so it makes sense it’ll take more than four quarters to get their regular season legs under them. I do think, however, they’ll miss Tyson Chandler. Brendan Haywood doesn’t scream “starting center” and Vince Carter is going to have to provide some sort of scoring on that starting unit. There are questions surrounding this team, but while I can’t see them repeating as champs, they’re not going to exactly roll over and die in the process.

According to sources at ESPN, former Cleveland Cavaliers guard Baron Davis will be signing with The New York Knicks. Davis was waved by the Cavaliers and was not claimed off of waivers by another team.

So much for a Merry Christmas. First Kobe loses Chris Paul and Lamar Odom in the same week, now his marriage is on the outs. According to TMZ his wife Vanessa Bryant has filed for divorce from The Black Mamba. They were married in April of 2001 and have two children.

Citing irreconcilable differences Bryant filed paperwork in Los Angeles. A source told TMZ that Kobe was allegedly unfaithful to Vanessa and she’d had enough. We can’t imagine what could be worse than the sexual assault charges he made her live through in 2003, but maybe looking at that $4 Million apology ring everyday got to be too much.

After plenty of speculation and trade rumors, NBA player Chris Paul will be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers from the New Orleans Hornets.

What Is He Leaving Behind?

According to ESPN, The Clippers will send guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and Minnesota’s unprotected 2012 first-round pick to the Hornets for Paul. The Clippers will also receive two future second-round picks.

If CP3 can stay healthy he and Slam Dunk champion Blake Griffin will be quite an entertaining tandem to watch. But what will their neighbors at the Staples Center do now that Dwight Howard is likely to remain in Orlando and they’ve sent Lamar Odom to Dallas for basically, nothing?

It appears that “Basketball Wives” will not have a monopoly on NBA drama this season. Yesterday the L.A. Lakers attempted to trade away Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol in exchange for Chris Paul in a three-team swap that included the Houston Rockets.

However, the NBA’s plantation owners complained to commissioner David Stern and the deal was killed. Now there is that #awkwardmoment when your team tries to get rid of you but can’t.

With the NBA season back in effect, teams are turning their attention to revamping their rosters for title contention. After getting swept in the playoffs by the Dallas Mavericks, it was clear some changes would be made by the Los Angeles Lakers front office. But no one imagined they’d go in this hard.

Sources close to the Lakers are telling ESPN that the front office is making moves to acquire All-Stars Dwight Howard and Chris Paul. ESPN’s Chris Broussard feels that with high caliber players like Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom on their current roster The Lakers do have the means to pull off the blockbuster trade.

NBA Players And Owners Reach Agreement, Season To Start Soon

After a 15-hour meeting on Friday, (November 26th), the NBA Players Union and the owners have reached a tentative agreement, ending the lockout that has caused many games to be cancelled. The season will start on December 25th and there will be 66 games played instead of 88.

Two months of the season have been cancelled. No word on if the all-star game will still be played.

To no one’s surprise the current NBA lockout has gotten personal. With the owners and players in a deadlock over splitting revenues, opinions have been flying back and forth about who is in the wrong. Baller Stephon Marbury, who is now stacking Renminbi playing in China, has been very critical of the owners, namely Charlotte Bobcats head honcho Michael Jordan.

Basketball never stops, even if it’s in print. Retired NBA star Shaquille O’Neal is releasing a new book on November 15 entitled Shaq Uncut: My Story. One section sure to get plenty of attention is his detailed account of his feud with former teammate Kobe Bryant. Deadspin.com got hold of several excerpts and in the part below O’Neal explains how the rift between he and Kobe became unmanageable.

So I’m on edge because I don’t have a new deal, and Kobe is on edge because he might be going to jail, so we’re taking it out on each other. Just before the start of the ’03-’04 season the coaching staff called us in and said, “No more public sparring or you’ll get fined.” … Phil was tired of it. Karl Malone and Gary Payton were sick of it. … So what happens? Immediately after that Kobe runs right out to Jim Gray and does this interview where he lets me have it. He said I was fat and out of shape. He said I was milking my toe injury for more time off, and the injury wasn’t even that serious. (Yeah, right. It only ended my damn career.) He said I was “lobbying for a contract extension when we have two Hall of Famers playing pretty much for free.” I’m sitting there watching this interview and I’m gonna explode. Hours earlier we had just promised our coach we’d stop. It was a truce broken. I let the guys know, “I’m going to kill him.”

The game of chicken between the NBA Players Association and the owners is stretching into overtime. The league’s commissioner, David Stern, announced that more games have been canceled through the end of November. No Thanksgiving showdown on NBC this year.

With the NBA season more likely to happen on your XBox or Playstation than in real life, the players have made plans to go on tour if the lockout continues.

Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Paul Pierce are among the players rumored to begin globe trotting for the fans if more NBA games are canceled. According to ESPN the tour is scheduled to begin Oct. 30 and end Nov. 9 and will make stops in Puerto Rico, London, Macau, and Australia. Two games each will be played at sites in London and Australia.

Several players have already been playing in exhibition games and summer leagues to stay in shape and keep the fans from rioting. Negotiations are currently at a stalemate and Commissioner David Stern is threatening to cancel games through Christmas if an agreement is not reached soon.

David Stern and the NBA owners have cancelled the first two weeks of the upcoming 2011 season! Who’s to blame? The players or owners?

After more than seven hours of negotiations the NBA Players Association and the owners were no closer to resolving their contract dispute. As a result Commissioner David Stern has cancelled the first two weeks of the season, meaning the soonest fans will see any NBA ball is November 14th.

“Despite extensive efforts, we have not been able to reach a new agreement with the players’ union that allows all 30 teams to be able to compete for a championship while fairly compensating our players,” NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.

On Saturday night at Florida International University a team of NBA All Stars lead by Dwyane Wade defeated a squad anchored by his Miami Heat teammate LeBron James 141 to 140. It was a surprisingly intense charity game that gave the 4000 fans in attendance (and the players) a welcome respite from the current NBA lockout.

Nine players from the 2011 All-Star game were on the court including Wade, James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Chris Bosh, Amar’e Stoudemire, Russell Westbrook and Rajon Rondo. Other players included John Wall, Rudy Gay, James Harden, Jamal Crawford, Caron Butler, Jonny Flynn and Dorell Wright.

Comedian Kevin Hart “coached” Wade’s team and Udonis Haslem coached LeBron’s. Proceeds of the game will go to FIU’s First Generation scholarship program to help students become the first in their family to attend college. It will also benefit Mary’s Court, a foundation set-up in honor of Isaiah Thomas’s mother. Thomas is the current coach of Florida International’s basketball team.

R&B singer Syleena Johnson has just released her fifth album, Chapter V: Underrated. While making music literally runs in her veins (her father is soul singer Syl Johnson) she is more passionate about one thing–basketball.

“This lock-out is devastating me! But it’s good for my Celtics,” says the former basketball wife whose husband played in the NBA and overseas for almost a decade. “They’re getting old and they need the rest.”

It looks like Delonte West may not be so crazy after all. As talks between NBA players and owners stalled fans may hear of more alternate plans being made if there is no NBA season this year.

The owners locked out the players in July when the old contract expired and the two sides have not made significant progress toward a new contract. The players received 57 percent of basketball-related income in the last year of the expired agreement. The owners want to cut that share down to 47%.

If an agreement is not reached by Monday, they may cancel the first two weeks of the regular season.

Boston Celtics guard Delonte West is determined to work during this NBA lockout. Last month he tweeted that he was applying for a job at Home Depot, but no one believed he was serious. Now he claims to have applied to work at a furniture store.

As “proof” he posted his job application and a photo of him driving what is supposed to be a delivery van.

In this economy we all do what we gotta, and there is nothing wrong with wanting an honest pay check. But the comedy is that while he admitted to being convicted of a crime, he explained it with one word: “misunderstanding.”

West was arrested two years ago for riding a motorcycle with a shotgun in a guitar case and several other guns on his person. He plead guilty and was sentenced to eight months of home detention and 40 hours of community service.

We’re all for anything that keeps him out of the recording booth.

We’ve been anxiously waiting for the new 2K12 Game to come out and now we can get a little fore-taste if you head over to XBox Live. We just got word that the demo is now available.

The 2K team is hoping to repeat its success from last year’s title with more iconic playable characters like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird in addition to Michael Jordan. The demo centers around last year’s final between the Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks. The game is expected to drop Oct.4th.
