Happy 11-11-11 Day! It’s common knowledge you only get one chance to make a first impression. That old adage is especially true in the entertainment business. One false move and it could grand opening, grand closing for a career. With that being said, The Urban Daily decided to discuss the best debut albums of the past eleven years. Why only in the past eleven years? If we didn’t do it like that, you’d probably be able to guess the artists on there like a bad suspense film. Reasonable Doubt, Illmatic, Ready To Die, and Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) would hold the top spots. So check our list of the best debut albums in the past eleven years. 11. Chrisette Michele – I Am (2007)

After causing a stir with her guest appearances on Nas’ “Can’t Forget About You” and the Jay-Z single, “Lost One,” New York native, Chrisette Michele sauntered her way onto our radar with an understated yet powerful first album. I Am featured sultry slow jams and self empowered up tempo cuts with jazz inspired vocals. Women identified with the R&B vocalist over songs dealing with heartbreak and all of love’s twists and turns. The brothas could respect her because although there were songs detailing how bad a man treated he, one of the most poignant ballads was “Love Is You.” Dedicated to her father, “Love Is You” showed male listeners she wasn’t an angry black woman black men try to avoid like the plague. Since it’s release, Michele has dropped two more critically acclaimed albums and received a Grammy. With Jay-Z and Nas in her corner, how could anyone be surprised at her level of success?

10. Nelly – Country Grammar (2000)

When Nelly barged his way into our radios eleven years ago, nobody could get enough of the St. Lunatic. Having been rejected by almost every label in the game, Universal Records took a shot on Nelly and reaped the benefits. With the help of producer Jay E, Nelly’s single, “Country Grammar,” became a top ten hit and catapulted him to stardom. The title track was so catchy everybody disregarded the fact that it’s talking about doing a drive by while smoking herb. Check those lyrics again. Follow up singles like “E.I.” and “Ride Wit Me” helped Nelly’s freshman set go nine times platinum. His sophomore disc, Nellyville, solidified his place atop the rap world in the earlier part of the 2000s. However, his last few albums have tarnished his multi-platinum album streak. Instead of platinum, Brass Knuckles and 5.0 have gone triple balsa wood.

9. India Arie – Acoustic Soul (2001)

Whoever said, “Progress is a slow process,” must have had India Arie in mind. The lead track, “Video,” peaked right outside of the top 40 and “Brown Skin” fared slightly better. Once Arie began performing the track on every television show she could, the disc’s steam began to pick up. In February of 2002, India was nominated for seven Grammys, the most for anyone that year. The problem was she lost every single trophy. Alicia Keys was the swan, while India Arie was given the role of the ugly duckling that night. We aren’t even going to get into the whole “Alicia won because she was light skinned” arguments that spilled from disgruntled mouths. Arie took a shot at the recording academy by wearing a shirt with a backwards ’7′ on Saturday Night Live a week later. India’s subsequent releases have been well received, but have never matched the double platinum status of Acoustic Soul. The Grammys have since awarded her four awards. They’re still trying to make up for the seven she was shut out for at the start of her career.

8. Clipse – Lord Willin’ (2002)

The Thornton Brothers form Virginia hooked up with The Neptunes and created the album called one of the best albums of the 2000s by Pitchfork. Anchored by cocaine imagery and raw raps, Lord Willin‘ helped The Clipse become fan favorites. The Virginia bred duo’s debut was certified Gold a month after it’s release. Their initial success didn’t shield them from label politics. Work for their second album ground to a halt in 2004 when Arista Records was assimilated into Jive Records. Known as a pop label, Jive didn’t know how to market the brothers and allowed them to languish on the shelf. When they realized they were locked into their Jive contract, the brothers Thornton released the stellar mixtape, We Got It For Cheap. Their following collections have gotten critical acclaim, but they haven’t reached the same commercial success they tasted on their first album. Pusha T is doing his solo thing with Kanye West and G.O.O.D. Music and Malice published a book called Wretched, Pitiful, Poor, Blind & Naked. Their hustle continues.

7. Alicia Keys – Songs in A Minor (2001)

Alicia Keys had been in the industry a number of years before Songs in A Minor dominated radio. She provided vocals for Da Brat’s 2000 album, Unrestricted. Once “Fallin’” became a hit, she didn’t need any assistance from established artists to shine. Alicia Keys shocked R&B fans with soulful compositions that recalled greats like Marvin Gaye and Aretha Frankin. Songs in A Minor was collection of songs dealing with the highs and lows of a relationship on the decline. While many thought the first single was a remake, the only actual remake was Keys’ version of Prince’s “How Come You Don’t Call Me.” Due to its acclaim, Alicia rode the wave of stardom all the way to the Grammys in 2002, where she swept all of the R&B categories she was nominated in, tying Lauryn Hill’s record of five wins in a single night. Songs in A Minor was a solid foundation for Keys to leap from and spread her creative wings. Each album thereafter had a few more experimental elements than the previous. Though she’s received some backlash due to her personal life, excuse those indiscretions because of this album.

6. Young Jeezy – Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 (2005)

Jay Jenkins’ first release made a name for other people besides Jeezy. Producers, Shawty Redd and Drumma Boy, became household names because of it. Thug Motivation 101 was about one thing: moving that white to make money. Actually, that’s all Jeezy’s career has been about. Despite being strictly about the trap, Jeezy had records for everyone. The streets praised the “Go Crazy (Remix)” at the same time the charts were being dominated by “Soul Survivor.” With street cred being Jeezy’s ultimate concern, he resists doing commercial rap. The albums following Thug Motivation 101 have remained true to the formula found on the aforementioned. We still rock with Jeezy, but we can’t wait for his new project, Thug Motivation 103 to hit the streets in December. Cheeeeaaaa!

5. John Legend – Get Lifted (2004)

John Legend’s first opus hit the airwaves in late 2004. Get Lifted introduced us to the singer with killer piano skills. Primarily produced, by Kanye West, Legend found a way to blend gospel rooted soul with contemporary R&B production. The lead single, “Used To Love U” appealed to the people who were tired of their gold digging mates. “Ordinary People” was a ballad everyone could relate to. It was about the emotional roller coaster love takes you on. Eventually, the album won John three Grammys including Best New Artist. He’s managed to steer clear of the “Best New Artist curse” by continuing to deliver soulful R&B that’s thought provoking and inspiring. If you’re still sleeping on John Legend, you better wake up!

4. Jill Scott – Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 (2000)

When Jill Scott crooned “Do you remember me?” The world replied, “No, but I’d like to know who you are.” Jill Scott came on the scene and made her natural vibe seem like the best thing since sliced bread. We loved her sass in the video for “Gettin’ In The Way” for threatening to drag a chick in the street and whoop her tail for all it was worth–$5.99 or something like that. Her wordplay and the way she bends notes as she sings is arguably the best aphrodisiac behind chocolate. Who Is Jill Scott? helped Jilly from Philly pursue all of her passions like acting and poetry. She started out with small parts on Girlfriends and wound up in two Tyler Perry films, Why Did I Get Married? and its sequel. As for now, Scott is enjoying motherhood and we are basking in the glow of her Light of the Sun album, which was released earlier this year.

3. 50 Cent – Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ (2003)

What can be said about Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson that hasn’t already? After recovering from getting shot nine times, 50 Cent stormed the music world with rhymes detailing his former life on the streets of Jamaica, Queens, New York. With the help of Dr. Dre and Eminem, 50 Cent became the biggest rapper in 2003.Thanks to the hype machine at Interscope Records, Get Rich or Die Tryin’ debuted at number one after selling 872,000 copies in four days. The first single, “In Da Club” broke records as the most listened to song in radio history. That feat was accomplished in a very short week. 50 has decided to venture into acting where he has shared the screen with greats like Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, and Samuel L. Jackson. 50 Cent hasn’t abandoned rap. He’s gearing up to release a new album in the coming months.

2. Beyonce – Dangerously In Love (2003)

There’s no denying Beyonce’s star power. She might not be your favorite artist, but homegirl does the damn thing. After freeing herself from the two ball and chains Destiny’s Child, Beyonce mania exploded. You couldn’t go ten minutes without hearing “Crazy In Love” during the summer of 2003. A mix of go-go and hip-hop inspired beats, Dangerously In Love proved what we all kind of knew–Beyonce is better as a solo artist. Don’t get me wrong, we love Kelly and Michelle, but their only coup was having survived all the member changes. Dangerously In Love spawned two number one tracks, “Crazy In Love” and “Baby Boy.” Critics hailed Dangerously In Love for its innovation and execution. Beyonce positioned herself as the Queen Bee of the music game and she wasn’t willing to hand over the throne until she announced at the 2011 Video Music Awards that she was expecting. We are all happy for her. Female R&B singers are a bit more appreciative than most because they can actually have a career now.

Kanye West – The College Dropout (2004)

Everything I’m about to write, Kanye West has already told you. He’s arrogant like that. The College Dropout was a shot in the arm for rap music. The sample heavy album wasn’t about the usual guns, drugs, money, and women topics. The College Dropout was about a guy who was from a middle class background with a love for rap music. Before West dropped this project, your issues with the law had to documented with mug shots. The College Dropout debuted at number two, selling 441,000 in its first week and earned West a host of acclaim and awards. His ego began to become a nuisance when he pitched a fit because he didn’t win an American Music Award. West threw a tantrum at the Grammys because Maroon 5 beat him out for Best New Artist. Although I don’t condone his behavior, can you blame the guy for getting upset? I mean really, “This Love” over “Jesus Walks?” “Jesus Walks” is technically a gospel song that got played in the clubs. I’ve never been to a church where the minister thanks the choir for their lovely rendition of “Sunday Morning.”

The two verbally attacked one another on the social network, airing personal information in the process. According to Slim, Nelly couldn’t even afford to keep his recording studio open but according to Nelly, Slim is overdue with a certain debt. The altercation occurred after Nelly refused to attend a basketball game.

While visiting Canada to promote his upcoming album “5.0″ rapper Nelly put on his entrepreneur hat to pick the next face of his Apple Bottoms jean brand. After holding an online search in August of 2010 four finalists were chosen; Tiffany Davison, Amanda Donald, Eve Meyers and Jessenia Vice.

Ashanti Reveals How She & Nelly Met For His “Behind The Music” Special

The lucky winner was 26 year old Jessenia Vice. The Newark, New Jersey resident currently works at a Psychiatric Hospital while studying to be a nurse. She was very grateful for her new opportunity.

“I am so excited to work with Apple Bottoms and Nelly!,” she said in a statement. “Before my grandmother passed she made me promise her to keep on going with the modeling. I never understood why until now. The two and half years I’ve been doing this have opened many doors of dreams I never could imagine.”

“The first time I met Nelly he asked me for my autograph, but I think he was being sarcastic and I remember writing it down on the program,” recalls the R&B songstress of running into Nelly at a press conference for the 2003 Grammy Awards. “That picture has been in so many publications as something else but it all started out as a joke. For the record, it took him a long time to get my number.”

Nelly Blames Record Label For Disappointing Sales Of New Album

St. Louis rap star Nelly has lashed out at his record label, Motown/Universal over the disappointing sales figures for his latest album 5.0, which landed in stores last week.

5.0, which was released on November 16th, landed at #10 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart after moving over 63,000 copies.

Nelly released his album one week before high profile releases by Kanye West and Nicki Minaj, who both trounced the superstar rapper in sales the following week.

The rapper took to Twitter and blamed Motown/Universal for lack of marketing as the culprit behind the slip in sales.

“A record deal is a 50/50 partnership!As a artist its your job to provide the record company with music that they(record company) can sell,” Nelly tweeted. “Thing about the partnership is that n the public eye the responsibility is not 50/50!the artist is always the 1who catches 90% of the blame

The rapper pointed out that his latest album 5.0 has already produced a hit single titled “Just a Dream,” which according to Nelly, has sold almost 2 million digital copies.

The last time Nelly and Kelly Rowland jumped on a track together, the end result was “Dilemma,” one of the finest pop singles of the 2000′s.

Now Cornell Haynes and Kelendria Rowland are trying to capture lightning in a bottle again with “Gone” from Nelly’s upcoming album, 5.0.

Unofficially dubbed “Dilemma Part 2″ by Nelly, “Gone” follows the same formula as “Dilemma”: a smooth midtempo beat, Nelly’s sung-rap style being completely sung instead of rapped, and Kelly’s voice adding the cherry on top.

Will “Gone” be as big as “Dilemma” was? We kinda doubt it, not to say that this song doesn’t have the potential to be.

But “Dilemma” was a monster record that reached Billboard’s top 10 before it was officially made a single, or a video was shot.

Probably the most controversial video of the 2000′s, Tip Drill set the standard for outrageously raunchy music videos. He slid a credit card down a skripper’s (yes I meant to say skripper) a** for goodness sake. He released this statement in regards to the Blockbuster[lol].

Hip-Hop & Pop Collaborations: Match Made In Heaven Or Hell?

Even though hip-hop has become modern day pop music, it’s still quite the WTF moment when a hip-hop artist teams up with a teenybopper pop star. Over the years, there have been no shortage of these sort of Hood-meets-Suburbia collaborations, and with differing results.

Some of them have are bonafide classics, and some of them were ideas that were doomed from inception (no DiCaprio).

And don’t worry, when that Kanye West/Raekwon/Justin Bieber song drops, we’ll be sure to let you know our opinion!

Katy Perry & Snoop Dogg “California Girls” (2010)

Former Christian music singer Katy Perry walked away from the old rugged cross a few years ago and pretended like she’d never read the Book of Leviticus before when she hit big with her song “I Kissed A Girl.” This summer, Perry’s landed another hit single with “California Girls,” which features everyone’s favorite pimpin Crip, Snoop Dogg.

We can’t front that the song is rather catchy, but it’s rather odd seeing Snoop “Murder Was The Case That They Gave Me” Dogg in this cotton candy world rapping over next Katy Perry.

Eminem “Won’t Back Down” (feat. Pink) (2010)

For all of his anti-pop sentiments from early in his career, it was both rather funny and sad when we found out that Eminem had recorded songs with both Pink and Rihanna for his new album. The end result wasn’t as bad as we expected, at least concerning the Pink collab. That Rihanna song that everyone’s tripping over themselves about is another story for another day…

Britney Spears & The Ying Yang Twins “I Got That Boom Boom” (2003)

How this one slipped under the radar, we’ll never know. America’s pop princess teamed up with the “Wait’ll you see my d*ck” guys for this album track from her In The Zone album. It’s not as bad as you’d think.

Christina Aguilera & Redman “Dirrty” (2002)

Christina Aguilera encountered a lot of controversy when the video for her collaboration with Redman was released, and it wasn’t because she had teamed up with the legendary weed aficionado. It was moreso due to the rather raunchy video that accompanied the song. The song wasn’t a huge hit for Aguilera, and Redman seemed to phone his part in.

Pink & Redman “Get The Party Started” (Sweet Dreams Remix) (2001)

A year before he teamed up with Christina Aguilera, Redman hopped on this Rockwilder remix to Pink’s smash hit single “Get The Party Started.” We weren’t mad at this back in 2001, and we aren’t too mad at it now.

The Jonas Brothers & Common “Don’t Charge Me For The Crime” (2009)

This track seemed to come out of nowhere. The Jonas Brothers somehow managed to get Common to guest on their song “Don’t Charge Me For The Crime.” This track did nothing to win back fans that Rashid lost with his Finding Forever and Universal Mind Control albums.

MOP & LFO “Life Is Good” (2001)

Usually when the topic of hip-hop/pop collaborations come up, this infamous pairing of the squeaky clean LFO with the only rappers we’re genuinely scared of will be the first song mentioned. And rightfully so. This song made absolutely no sense to anyone when it dropped in 2001, and makes even less in 2010. It’s also worth noting that the Lyte Funky Ones also collaborated with De La Soul on the same album in which this song

MOP & Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice of the Spice Girls) “It’s That Simple” (2003)

Speaking of the Mash Out Posse, in 2003 Dame Dash had them record this song with Victoria Beckham, former Spice Girl and wife of British football (read: soccer) star David Beckham. The song never made it much further than a white label 12″, and with good reason. It sucks. It’s that simple.

Backstreet Boys & Pusha T “The Call” (Neptunes Remix) (2001)

Before he and Malice were spitting coke tales on their Lord Willin’ album, Pusha T was making guest appearances on songs like the Neptunes’ remix of the Backstreet Boys’ “The Call.” The song is hot…. until the Backstreet Boys start singing.

N*Sync & Nelly “Girlfriend” (Remix) (2002)

N*Sync went out with a bang with the remix to “Girlfriend,” their final single as a group. Produced by the Neptunes, Justin Timberlake and crew got Nelly to bless their swan song with a verse.

New Kids On The Block & Nice & Smooth “Dirty Dawg” (1994)

The New Kids grabbed Nice & Smooth for their last single before they broke up. The video was actually banned in Canada because of it’s “misogynistic themes” and suggested violence. Too bad the song wasn’t banned worldwide.

Madonna & 2Pac “Rather Be Your Lover” (unreleased) (1994)

2Pac and Madonna had a brief fling in 1994 that resulted in Pac recording a verse for Madonna’s then upcoming album, Bedtime Stories. Pac’s ensuing legal issues resulted in Madonna, who was trying to soften her image up a bit, to pull Pac off the song and replace him with Meshell Ndegeocello, who was signed to Madonna’s label at the time. Both versions of the song aren’t bad at all.

The Fat Boys & The Beach Boys “Wipeout” (1987)

The year is 1987 and The Fat Boys were starting to crossover to pop audiences. What better way to seal their status as pop stars than to collaborate with one of the biggest acts in classic pop music, The Beach Boys.

Wrong.

Mariah Carey & Ol’ Dirty Bastard “Fantasy” (Remix) (1995)

Mariah Carey’s made some of the best pop/hip-hop collaborations ever. Her songs with Bone Thugs N Harmony, Mobb Deep, Da Brat, Mase, and Nas were all hits. It all started with this classic and odd pairing with Wu-Tang’s Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

Nelly Joins St. Louis’ Hot 104.1 As New On-Air Personality

St. Louis’ own Nelly will be joining the on-air team at the city’s Hot 104.1 station starting today, August 11th!

Nelly will take over the station’s afternoon drive slot from 3pm to 7pm. The rapper will only be on air for a month as he’s filling in for Staci Static who is out on maternity leave.

It’s exciting when an artist releases a music video and they create a new dance to go along with their song. Now you know exactly what to do when it comes on in the club!

The Chicken Head

Chingy- Right Thurr

When this dance came out, it received mixed reviews. For one- the name is odd and if you did the dance did that make you a chicken head? Two- it was kind of hard- the moving hips, legs and arms at the same time. Thirdly- It takes a lot of room to do in the club. Although it caused a couple of fights, cause “chickening” led to battling, it still manages to make an appearance to this day on the dance floor.

Flapping Your Wings

Nelly- Flap Your Wings

This dance requires amazing balance but if done right can be very sexy! Men get right in front of the female you have been watching all night and watch her “flap her wings.” This dance only causes a problem when people do not bathe correctly or just have bad B.O- flapping and odor do not mix.

The Get Me Bodied Break Down

Beyonce- Get Me Bodied

When this song comes on, all men must leave the dance floor! Every female will be patting her weave, dropping down and getting low with it, and if you’re lucky we may tick fight!

The Harlem Shake
G-Dep- Let’s Get It

When kids do this dance it looks cute but when adults do it- they just look like they’re having a seizure- but it’s still HOT!

The Booty Bounce

Now Juvey, didn’t event the booty bounce but this song sure made it o.k to do it at your local dance club. This dance, song never gets old and the only trouble you’d probably get into for doing this is pictures of your a** on Facebook the next day. Play this with some bass in the club and watch every chick go crazy when Weezy goes “Wobbly -di-wobly-di.”

Getting Light

Swag Kids- 5000

Getting Light isn’t very easy. You have to be a very special person to pull this off. “Tow Wopping” and “chicken noodle souping” are detailed dancing and there are so many different ways to “Get Light.”

F.L.Y- Swag Surfin’

I have never seen an entire club mobilize until the “swag surfin” dance came out. Females, males, kids, and mothers all “swag surf” proudly!

The Dutty Wine
Tony Matterhorn- Dutty Wine

I don’t think a reggae dance would be complete if it wasn’t dangerous, therefore rolling your head until your dizzy is perfect. You can “dutty wine” on your head, in a split on your back or wherever you can think of- the crazier the better!

Crumping
Chris Brown- Yo (3:40)

Chris Brown didn’t invent “crumping” but he hasn’t stopped doing it since he discovered it. He put it in all of his videos and made it more popular than it was, so he will be accredited with this dance. Crumping is dangerous- point blank. You can get kicked punched or jumped on just attempting to watch it. Be careful around this one folks!

“Daggering”

RDX- Bend Ova

Daggering is a form of basically humping with clothes on, so if you do not want to be somewhat molested on the dance floor- GET AWAY! It is entertaining to watch though..

Police have released more details surrounding an early morning burglary at the home of Saint Louis rapper Nelly.

Police received a 911 call around 7:00 this morning from occupants inside of the residence who reported that a man was breaking into the mansion.

One of the men inside the home confronted the intruder who fled with a duffel bag full of electronics, video games other items belonging to Nelly.

Police said the man fled in a black GMC Yukon and witnesses reported seeing a vehicle matching the description in the area a short time later.

Nelly was not home during the intrusion according to reports.

Nelly’s St. Louis mansion is at the center of a major police manhunt, after cops received a call about someone breaking into the home early this morning.

We’re told 12 officers, a helicopter unit and a K-9 squad have been patrolling the area after a female in the home reported that she saw a young man “fleeing” from the residence.

It’s unclear if anything was taken from the home. No word if Nelly was home at the time of the alleged incident.
