Of his time in the NFL, Williams said, “The NFL has been an amazing page in this chapter of my life. I pray that all successive adventures offer me the same potential for growth, success and most importantly, fun. As for what’s next, I am excited about all the opportunities ahead — continuing my education, running The Ricky Williams Foundation and whatever other opportunities present themselves.”

There were no disciplinary reasons from the move, the Patriots wanted to make room on the roster for Defensive End Alex Silvestro.

To his credit, Underwood was a class act in his reaction to the move, stating on his Twitter page that he was still cheering for The Patriots.

“Good Luck To The New England Organization, The Coaches, & All My Teammates… #PatsNation,” he wrote. “THANK YOU Everyone For Your Support & Sympathy. Im Fine, This Will Only Make Me Stronger…Tough Times Never Last But Tough Ppl Do #TeamWood.”

Underwood was third on the New England depth chart behind Chad Ochocinco and had three catches for 30 yards on the season.

A major contrast this team has with its 07’ counterpart is its absence of two former difference makers on both sides of the ball.  On defense it was the well known sack king- Michael Strahan.  Strahan holds the single season record for sacks and will most likely pass rush his way right into the hall of fame when he becomes eligible.  On the other side of the ball it was Plaxico Burress.  Yes the man who many non football fans would know for channeling his inner Cheddar Bob and shooting himself in the leg in a nightclub after the 2007 season.  That incident (unfortunately) overshadowed his game clinching touchdown catch in the super bowl just days before.

Although, these guys are gone and were great in their Giant careers, they’ve been replaced with some youthful playmakers that any of the other 31 teams would love to have.  The Giants (still) have a ferocious pass rush, who don’t fall too far from their super bowl tree ranked third this year with 48 sacks as opposed to the 50 they tallied in 07.  Instead of Strahan this group is led by the second year phenom Jason Pierre Paul, who had a whopping 16.5 sacks this year. Veteran’s Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, two holdovers from the Super Bowl team, are still there and balling.  They also replaced Plaxico and that group of receivers with some young blood.  The giants trio of Manningham, Cruz, and Nicks, who in particular is setting postseason receiving records, are playing at Pro Bowl levels right now.

The biggest reason why the Giants will win the Superbowl is Eli Manning.  Yes the same Eli manning that threw a league high 25 interceptions one year ago and would often times have you scratching your head thinking “this guy is Peyton’s brother?!”  Well this has been a career defining year for Eli as he ranked 7^th in passer rating, set a career high in yards and completions, while keeping his interceptions to a modest 16.  The Same Eli who in the beginning of the season was mocked and ridiculed for saying he was an Elite quarterback.  After winning his second playoff game in Lambeau field, one of the most difficult places to play, no one has a right to argue with him.  He turned out a sensational performance and is the number one reason this team has had success this season.  So with only 2 victories keeping him from his second Superbowl, the next time Eli says he’s elite, not a single person should laugh or chuckle, in fact he doesn’t even have to, his play says it all.

Doing Big D During Super Bowl Weekend

The Super Bowl halftime show has become a much ballyhooed fifteen minute performance in which some great performers deliver spellbinding sets and others simply embarrass themselves. 

The Urban Daily wanted to take a look back at some of the best Superbowl halftime shows ever done.  Hit us in the comments and tell us who should have made the list. Feel free to leave your predictions of how well Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and Cee-Lo Green will do at this year’s game featuring the Giants and the Patriots.

5. Nsync, Aerosmith, Britney Spears, Nelly, and Mary J. Blige - Super Bowl XXV (2001)

In 2001, you’d have been hard pressed to find a boy band bigger than Nsync. Fresh off selling two million copies of their album in a week, Justin and the others were on top of the world. Aerosmith were experiencing a resurgence in their careers due to their hit, “Jaded,” which led to the two bands collaborating. Britney Spears got to perform simply because she and Timberlake were hot and heavy at the time. Nelly and Mary J. Blige make brief appearances to rock out on “Walk This Way.” Even if you hated bubblegum pop music, you gave it a pass for this electrifying show.

4. Prince – Super Bowl XLI (2007)

Three years after Nipplegate, Prince tore the halftime show up. The Purple One went through some of his tamer hits and even did an ill rendition of The Foo Fighters’ “Best of You.” Not one to go without any controversy, Prince played a guitar solo during his signature “Purple Rain” where he put up a sheet and simulated self love. Dude gave a showstopping performance in the rain wearing heels and his head scarf. You know how Prince is about his perm.

3. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake – Super Bowl XXXVIII (2004)

Janet Jackson was on the promotional trail for her album Damita Jo when she hit the Superbowl stage. Being that Janet is the consummate performer, everybody knew she was going to do the damn thing. What we didn’t know was we were going to get a glimpse of her pierced mammary. After running through, “All For You” and “Rhythm Nation,” Timberlake hit the stage for “Rock Your Body.” When he sang, “Better have you naked by the end of this song,” he couldn’t fathom how accurate that lyric would be. Ms. Jackson’s breast caused a lot of women to smack their men for drooling. Who cares if it was a publicity stunt! They also gave birth to the phrase “wardrobe malfunction.”

2. U2 – Super Bowl XXXVI (2002)

The Super Bowl in 2002 was marred by sadness. America was still reeling from the attack on the World Trade Center five months earlier. Legendary rock band U2 made sure the people lost in the attack were not forgotten by projecting the names of every person whose lives were taken on the horrific day. Bono and crew did what they do best; entertain us while slipping in a social message. Well done U2, well done.

1. Michael Jackson – Super Bowl XXVII (1993)

Michael Jackson never just put on a show. He made every performance a spectacle. His 1993 Super Bowl performance was no exception. Using holographic images of himself to make an entrance, Michael had the crowd going wild just by standing still. Once he started singing hits like “Billie Jean,” “Black or White,” and “Jam,” he had the world in the palm of his hand. MJ then made a statement of racial harmony and world peace with “Heal the World.” Long live the king!

I sat down with former NFL wide receiver and current NBC commentator Cris Collinsworth to discuss the NFL Playoffs, who he thinks is winning the Super Bowl, and where Tom Brady ranks as one of the greatest of all time!

Now the Giants will face the San Francisco 49ers, who had an impressive win against the New Orleans Saints, in the NFC Championship game next week.

Ray Lewis and his Baltimore Ravens knocked off the Houston Texans to advance to the AFC title game against the New England Patriots.  The Patriots ended the Cinderella run of Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos with a 45 to 10 spanking.

When Tim Tebow took over as the Denver Broncos starting quarterback his unorthodox playing style was critiqued by many. His Christain faith also took center stage as he regularly knelt down to pray after successful plays. But as his team mounted win after unlikely win, “Tebow Time” became a national craze that even non-football fans rallied behind. However, a six-game win streak came to an abrupt halt and the Broncos limped into the playoffs on a three-game skid.

But today was a new day. Tebow and the Broncos defense struck early on the injury depleted Steelers showing discipline and desire to win. They jumped out to an early lead and held it for most of the game.

The high drama came in overtime as the teams were tied and playing under the NFL’s new overtime rules. The first team to score on the opening drive would go home the victor and that’s exactly what the Broncos did.

As almost to quiet his critics about his lack of throwing skill, Tebow hurled an 80-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas who ran in for the touchdown. Ironcially,  Thomas was the player Tebow was believed to have kissed on the mouth back in October.

Now the Broncos head to New England to face the Patriots next Saturday.  The last time the two teams met Tebow laid hands on an injured Patriots lineman:

Adding some fun to the equation DJ Sour Milk of the L.A. Leakers posed the question “Does Arian Foster kinda look like @MURS? Or am I reaching?” For the unfamiliar, Murs is California based MC who has collaborated with everyone from 9th Wonder to Terrace Martin.

DJ Sour Milk followed up with a portrait of them side by side and declared, “Not only are @ArianFoster & @MURS brothas, but I’m convinced they’re also brothers.”

The Packers had their 19-game winning streak (going back to last season) ended by the Kansas City Chiefs, losing 19 to 14. Rodgers threw for 235 yards and scored two touchdowns, but was without starters Greg Jennings and James Starks. The ’72 Miami Dolphins can break out the champagne again because their undefeated record will stand for another year.

On the other side of the coin the winless Indianapolis Colts, who have been without star quarterback Peyton Manning all season, finally got in the win column against the Tennessee Titans. Lifted by Donald Brown’s career record 161 rushing yards and a touch down the Colts won 27-13.

Lastly, in the most hyped game of the week, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots ran up the scoreboard on Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos to hand them their first loss since he took over as Quarterback.

In recent weeks Tebow had amassed a cult-like following after leading his team to several unlikely comeback wins. The Christian Tebow’s displays of faith took center stage as his team racked up victories, but the Pat’s were clicking on all cylinders today.

Owens, who is currently not on an NFL roster, wants to reduce the payments he’s making for a son he shares with baby mama Monique Reynolds … because, according to his rep, he’s simply not getting paid these days.

Owens, who last played with the Cincinnati Bengals, had off-season surgery on his left knee and was hoping to be on a new team by now. With no consistent income he feels he can’t make the same level of payments. The wide receiver held a workout for NFL teams recently, but only television reps showed up.

Terrell Owens held a workout yesterday (Oct. 25th) to show that his surgically repaired left knee is pain free and completely healed from a torn ACL. Terrell looked great, running routes with his shirt off (surprise!) showing he was in tip-top physical condition from the waist up and catching all balls thrown to him (on camera anyways).

Should T.O. Go To NY?

The problem was no one representing the NFL showed up to watch. What does that say about Owens future in the league? What could this do to the psyche of someone that loves the spotlight? While I don’t think Terrell should retire, I do believe he should sit out this season and rest his knee instead of being a hired gun for the stretch run. He is more known for his reality show these days than football (the show is a guilty pleasure of mine) so he should prepare for next season and collect those residual paychecks from “The T.O. Show“. But why should Terrell or any NFL owner listen to me? There are teams this season that can definitely use Owens on their roster right now. Here are my top 5:

1) Indianapolis Colts

The Colts need a rewind button on their dismal season. Bottom line, they played like a college team last Sunday (Oct.23rd). After the defense gave up 62 points to the New Orleans Saints there’s nothing T.O. could have done to help. Easily on their way to falling below 10 wins in a season for the first time in years, it couldn’t hurt to give Terrell a shot.

2) Oakland Raiders

They just signed one of Owens’ former quarterbacks in Carson Palmer and the Raiders are on the right side of .500 at 4-2. Seriously, I challenge you to name one of the Raiders’ wide receivers without googling their current roster. I couldn’t either. The Raiders can thank running back Darren McFadden and the recently injured quarterback Jason Campbell for their fast start. McFadden was sidelined this past Sunday and you saw the result: zero points. A Palmer-Owens connection can bring the offensive punch, give them a big name at wide receiver for the first time since Tim Brown and Jerry Rice were running routes together, and allow them to, in the famous words of their deceased owner Al Davis, “just win, baby!”

3) Minnesota Vikings

I’m not trying to be funny, really (yet I can’t help but chuckle at the irony). If Minnesota were to take a chance on T.O. he would be reunited with the recently demoted Donovan McNabb. The Vikings have had success bringing in a former star trying to reclaim glory with Brett Favre so why can’t they do it again? 2 out of 4 ain’t bad (McNabb and Randy Moss in their returns were busts). Christian Ponder showed signs of greatness keeping the Vikes competitive against the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers no less and Owens, who plays his best in big games, would give him another big target. However, I doubt coach Leslie Frazier would put McNabb (speaking of someone who should retire) through any further embarrassment.

4) New York Jets

They were rumored to be looking at T.O. before the season began, then they signed Plaxico Burress.… same thing. They also have Santonio Holmes. Why not bring T.O. in and make it a troublesome threesome? Rex Ryan is the coach and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he shook things up.

5) Philadelphia Eagles

Donovan McNabb is not the quarterback anymore and Michael Vick will not get tired in the Super Bowl. The supposed “Dream Team” needs to wake up from a nightmare start and T.O.’s fire could be what gets them over the hump on both sides of the ball. Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin could learn a lot from the crafty veteran. The question is would coach Andy Reid go down that road again?

Sure there are other bad teams that need T.O.’s services (Miami and St. Louis comes to mind), but Owens’ future Hall of Fame career has been built playing with elite teams (49ers, Cowboys, Eagles) and quarterbacks.  If he managed to leave all of those teams on a bad note (and they were winning), do you think he would suit up for the Dolphins just to get a pay check?  Even though his “workout” wasn’t set-up by the NFL, his reputation as a divisive presence may be another reason why no NFL scouts showed up. Owens may have a lot left in the tank, but once you start signing a string of one year contracts with different teams in any sport the end may be near whether he likes it or not.

Better start getting that speech ready.

It is against the rules to have a cell phone on the field during the game and Polamalu was hit with a $10,000 penalty.  His coach Mike Tomlin came to his defense saying “He wasn’t checking his bank account.”

On the bright side, Polamalu is in good health and will be playing this Sunday against the 1 and 4 Arizona Cardinals.

“He’ll sign tomorrow and take his physical and be ready to start practicing,” Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt said Thursday night before Tennessee played New Orleans in a final preseason game. “It was a tough negotiation, but both sides gave some and we got it done.”

Johnson ran for 2,0006 yards in 2009 and became only the sixth man in NFL history to surpass 2,000 yards in a season.
