Your last project, and first solo album, was Mr. I. What was the reception like to that project?

It was great until the record company, Def Soul/Island/Def Jam Records, was dismantled. The company was dismantled right at the beginning of the release. L.A. Reid was no longer there and everybody in the company was either laid off or fired. Some of our albums got caught up in that tangle there. L.A is going to Sony Records. Myself, I’ll probably wind up doing my next record with him. All our plans for the record were caught up in the changes. All of the sudden, L.A. Reid didn’t work at my label anymore.

One question about the album is why didn’t your cover of The Carpenters “(They Long To Be) Close To You” with Lauryn Hill make the cut?

We tried to get that approved from everybody involved because that’s definitely a hit record. It got leaked and once it leaked, everyone loved it. The leak showed everybody wanted that record. At the time, I don’t know what she was doing. She was having a kid and raising her other children. Everything was just a lot of confusion. It was just confusion everywhere.

You said things with that album didn’t go as planned? What was the strategy in its promotion?

Our first release of that album was supposed to be “Take It How You Want It” with T.I. and he got sent to jail. Aretha Franklin and I did a duet for it and she got sick. Everybody was praying for her. In the midst of all that, the label fired all of the people working on my project.

What was it like working with T.I.?

It was great, man. Really great. I couldn’t wait for the record to come out and we were ready to do a video and everything. The weekend we were to shoot the video, he was arrested. I was just shocked over that.

What music are you listening to now?

Well, I listen to the Steve Harvey and Tom Joyner radio shows to keep up with everything. As for artists, I listen to Chris Brown and Trey Songz. I like to see what they’re doing and how it makes the fans move and feel.

Speaking of Chris Brown, what do you think about the Chris Browns, Trey Songz, and Anthony Hamiltons? What are your thoughts on the new crop of R&B singers coming up?

I like that Anthony Hamilton record with Jill Scott. I really like that. Chris Brown and Trey Songz have great songs. I like the way their records are produced. They have a lot to learn, but they are young enough to fix and change things. If they stay close to the business, they will get all of those things worked out. Maxwell has got his thing together and I love his last album.

What new singers would you like to work with in the future?

I want to do something with Beyonce and Alicia Keys. I’ve got to do a record with them, but I guess those would be the people I will work with in the future. Also, I’ve always wanted to do a record with Al Green. That would be something magical if we ever get together to do it.

Will you be collaborating with R. Kelly again?

Yes, I’m working with R. Kelly on the next album right now!

Is it a collaborative album or just a solo record?

Uh, I don’t want to tell you all of that. I kind of want to keep it a secret. We don’t want to give anything out. I can tell you it is going to be dynamite. You can tell the world that.

Earlier we talked a little bit about R&B’s new crop of singers. Would you rather be revered as a legend in the game or respected as a competitor?

They know I’m a competitor and they also know I’m a legend! I’ve been making records since before many of their parents were born, so in that aspect, I’m a legend. However, I still am out there delivering great records.

You’ve had hits in every decade since the fifties. Do you ever think you’ll slow down and just relax on an island somewhere?

No, I picture myself just staying at it and going forward and things. I want to be at a place where everything I’ve done is at the top. I love all of my records. I can’t say that I have a favorite because they all mean something to me. They mean something to my fans and I love all my records. So stopping is not an option.

5. Jay-Z The Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse

Hov stans, have a seat. The album was good. The problem was it is the follow up to one of the best rap albums ever. You mean to tell me after giving the streets soul stirring rap songs like “This Can’t Be Life” and “Heart of the City” you follow that up with a mediocre sample of Pac’s “Me and My Girlfriend?” Sorry, that just won’t fly here. Plus, the concept of BP2 being a double album was unnecessary. The result of Jigga’s ambition was an unfocused album. We love Jay’s flows and all, but he overstayed his welcome in our stereos with that set. Glad he moved on to the next one.

4. Lloyd Banks The Hunger For More 2

Lloyd Banks is the best lyricist out of the G-Unit camp. He made the album a sequel because he wanted to regain the success of his debut collection. While HFM2 did receive positive reviews from critics and fans alike, he lands on the list because there was nothing new about HFM2. We are kinda sick of the guns, drugs, and street life rhetoric. That was cool when he was transitioning from the streets to a successful life, but now that he’s toured the globe and entered another tax bracket, rap about what you’re living now.

3. R. Kelly TP 3: Reloaded

12 Play is the quintessential R. Kelly album. there is nothing but hits on that effort. We let TP2.com slide because of bangers like “Feelin On Yo Booty,” “Fiesta,” and the sentimental “I Wish.” All of that love and admiration went out the window when TP3 hit the streets. This is one of the worst sequels for a number of reasons. The Trapped In The Closet saga was cool for the first five. “Slow Wind” had every chick in the club trying to get in touch with her West Indian roots to entice potential suitors. For that, men across America thank him. However, am I the only one who finds it creepy R. Kelly uses random objects in his sex analogies?  “Remote Control.” “Sex In The Kitchen.” What’s next? “I Wanna Hit It In The Bus Terminal Bathroom?”

2. Ghostface Killah More Fish

In 2006, Ghostface experienced a resurgence in his career thanks to his damn near classic, Fishscale. Being that he was riding the success wave, Def Jam tried to capitalize on it by dropping More Fish shortly thereafter. We can’t blame Tony Starks because he said in interviews how he didn’t think putting More Fish out would help, but as usual, the label only cared about dollar signs. MF consisted mostly of unreleased tracked that heavily featured his Theodore Unit soldiers. Needless to say, the soldiers of Theodore Unit are nowhere as great as Ghostface on the mic.

1. Method Man Tical 0: The Prequel

The third installment in the Tical series was the epitome of craptastic. Fans and critics hated the album for its generic party tracks. Consumers complained there were too many guests that overshadowed Meth. The thought of guests stealing shine from Method Man was crazy considering the amount of scene-stealing verses in his catalog. The commercial direction the album took was due in part to Diddy and Harve Pierre’s input. Meth explained, “On the third LP, it was suggested (by Def Jam) to bring in Harve Pierre and P. Diddy. Who am I to argue? Puff knows how to sell some records. But that wasn’t the direction to go in, and I know that.” Don’t try to place all the blame squarely on the shoulders of Diddy and Pierre, if Meth knew that wasn’t the road he wanted to travel down, all he had to do was jump out of the car. Scratches and scars heal. Bad albums are forever.

TUD’s Jazzy F: I’m not even gone waste time. What’s going on between you and Keyshia Cole?

There’s absolutely nothing going on with Keyshia Cole; I don’t know what her problem is with me, but I have no problem with her.  I bought every single Keyshia Cole album.  She continues to take shots at me, and I continue to turn the other cheek.  Because this is how I feel about it:  If you’re hot, nobody can take your spot.  It is what it is.  God gave her that spot; I can’t take it.  She has a little boy, I have a little boy.  I support her.  I have no problem with Keyshia,  I want to see her succeed.  I love her new record, but the blows being thrown on Twitter have got to stop; we’re two grown women, two black women, and we need to come together.

Do you feel pressure from comparisons?

No, because I’m a mermaid; I’m not even human.  I could not compete with those girls anyway.  I don’t feel any pressure at all.  You compare me to Keyshia, compare me to Mary — they sold records — great!  But at this point I’m just getting my feet wet.  I play piano, I love country music, I sing ballads.  Half of that, no one has even seen.  So they’re only comparing me based on what the label has put out on me and what they see.  And I can’t get mad about that.  People will compare you in order to be comfortable with letting you in the game.  It did kind of anger me, but I had a recent conversation that made me feel better.

You went to FAMU on scholarship for yodeling?

[giggles and hesitates] Yeah, I got a scholarship for yodeling.  It’s a HBCU, so they weren’t used to that.  I sang other songs as well, but I yodeled and they gave me a scholarship.

Did you have your son when you were in undergrad?

Sure did.  That’s why when people say they can’t go to college and the can’t finish college, I don’t hear them.  I went to class everyday up until I had my baby, and I went back to school a week later.  And I graduated on time, in four years.  And I had my son, who didn’t ever go to sleep.  The very last couple of months of my last year, my mother and father came and got my son because they wanted to make sure that I ended with great grades and everything like that.  So I thank God for my parents, because a lot of parents are not going to come a take a newborn.  But they came and got him.  I couldn’t study or sleep because I had a baby crying.

I read that you play the piano, is that something you really enjoy?

I love being on stage, wildin out, taking off my shoes and running around, drinking and having a good time, and having to sit behind the piano is a-whole-nother thing.  But that is a gift that I do have.  I have to really get better about it, because that’s something that touches people as well.  Right now, like tonight, I have sit down and really learn “How Many Times” and ‘Today Just Ain’t My Day”; I read sheet music.  For me, it wasn’t a given gift; it was something that my mom and dad said I was going to do.  But it did help my ear, and it helped me to hear things, when I go in the studio to mimic sounds, it builds my ear for music.

How did you link up with R. Kelly?

Well actually, I was supposed to sign with him first through Jive, and what ended up happening was  I went in the building and Wayne Williams took a great interest in me.  And from there, after I signed with Jive, a week later they took me to R. Kelly.

How did the relationship form from there?

He’s a comedian; he’s hilarious!  He either likes you or he doesn’t. So thank God he liked me.  And we’ve been friends ever since.

Were you nervous?

Oh absolutely.  Because I had looked up to him for years, and I really wanted to be able to sing different topics.  And my label signed me as a female R.Kelly, because he topic I came in singing about was so off the wall.  So they were like, “Okay.  Now you can meet your idol.  And when you go in here, if he doesn’t like you, don’t get your feelings hurt.”  I was shaking.  But he was so … he was just cool.  The first thing he asked me when he saw me was, “Are you a stripper?”

Let’s talk about “I Just Can’t Do This,” was this record a real life situation?

I was having a bad relationship, as usual.  And I was just going through it.  R. Kelly called me late one night, because I had talked to him about what I was going through, and he was like, “Yo, I got this song about your situation; it’s a hit.”  That’s where the record came from and people still love it, because the record touched a lot of people.

“How Many Times” — does it relate to “I Just Can’t Do This”?

People think “HMT” is just about a no good man; it’s so much deeper than that.  When me and Sean sat down and talked about my life — if you listen to it, basically what I’m saying is how many times do I have to allow myself to go through the same sh*t.  Not just with a man, but just in life period, before I say, “It’s time to stop it” and find another way.  So it’s not just about how many times did a man do that.

The album Pain Medicine — I love the title… Is this album going to be therapeutic for the ladies?

Thank you!  This album is actually theraputic for everybody.  I’m shooting two videos next week.  Another song on the album is called “Today Just Ain’t My Day”; that’s not a gender based record.  it’s just basically a record saying what I’m going through and why I’m having a bad day.  This album is going to relate to everyone and their life issues.  I’d like to say the album is about life, not about men.

Who will you be Collaborating with on the album?

R.Kelly is on a banger. I’m trying to get Pink on the record as well.

How do you feel about the current state of R&B?

I don’t like how it’s difficult to get R&B played on the radio.  I don’t like the fact that R&B suffers a lot and fails.  But I do love the R&B artists that are out.  I absolutely love Jazmine Sullivan.  She embodies beautiful R&B.  I love Melanie Fiona.  I love Marsha.  I think there are some really gifted artists right now in R&B, and they excite me; they make me happy to be their peer.  And I’m happy with where R&B is, not the politics of R&B, but the actual music in R&B, I’m very happy with.

On September 26th, 2010, Bishop Eddie Long stood in front of a congregation of thousands of supporters at his New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. ”I’ve been accused. I’m under attack. I want you to know, as I said earlier, I am not a perfect man, but this thing, I’m going to fight.” On May 30th 2011, just three short days ago — that fight ended with an out of court settlement which brings me to my reason for writing.

When Michael Jackson was accused of touching a little boy, we ridiculed him all the way to his grave and there after. We labeled him a pedophile and constantly questioned his motives around children. He was not a leader of a nation or congregation —  just a very talented entertainer. Yet today, Eddie Long stood accused by not one or two, but four young men of coercing them into sexual relationships among other things, and his church is still for the most part full of people ready to praise.

Where else in society, based on the tradition religious beliefs that denounce homosexuality, would we accept someone who not only stood accused of such acts, but has supposedly paid somewhere between 4 and 15 million dollars of money earned from the church and church charities to keep their accusers silent? Would you hire a baby sitter with this track record? Allow your child to be instructed by a teacher under these pretenses?

The slow, bass-heavy track is pretty typical of Luger’s production, but without the melodrama of his track for Jay-Z & Kanye’s “H.A.M.”

10) Nicki Minaj and Will.I.am At the VMAs

For their performance of “Check It Out” Will.iam had the Internet going nuts with his “all back everything” ensemble. The backlash on Twitter was so harsh that he was forced his defend himself from the onslaught of “Sambo 3000″ comments. But most folks figured he was being his usual, weird self.

8) Drake, Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz and VMAs
It was pretty fly thy way Mary started out singing the actual sample used in “Fancy” (Ace Spectrums “I Don’t Want To Play Around“) and went right into the actual record.

7) Lil Wayne, Drake, Eminem and  Travis Barker at The Grammys

This performance of “Drop The World” was one of the most talked about rap performances of the year.

6) Maxwell at Grammys 2010
Performed “Pretty Wings” and was later joined on stage by Roberta Flack.

5) Alicia Keys Prince Tribute

We don’t know what convinced a pregnant Alicia Keys to climb on top of piano during her Prince tribute ( did you see the look on Princes’ face?) but we jumped up and down yelling at the TV when she did.

4) Chris Brown Michael Jackson tribute at BET Awards.

Breezy became so emotional during his tribute to the late Michael Jackson that tears began streaming down his face. We don’t think that it was coincidence that it happened during “Man In The Mirror.”

3) R. Kelly at The Soul Train Awards 2010

The buzz after this performance was deafening. Whatever your personal feelings about the man this medley of his hits was epic.

2) Kanye West, “Runaway” at the VMAs

After the very public drama with Taylor Swift no one thought they’d see Kanye West at the VMAs again. Not only did he return, he debuted a song that was pretty much a middle-finger to everyone that trashed his name in the last calendar year.

1) “Four Women” at Black Girls Rock
Jill Scott, Ledisi, Marsha Ambrosius and Kelly Price brought the house down as they musically embodied “Aunt Sarah,” “Safronia,” “Sweet Thing” and “Peaches” for Nina Simone’s classic.

It was the first single in history to debut in the top spot.

The R. Kelly penned tune, needless to say, was an instant hit and immediately became yet another classic in the King of Pop’s catalog.

15 years later, R. Kelly has decided to release his own version of the song as a bonus track on his upcoming album, Love Letter.

This time, The Pied Piper brought out two of his biggest hits from the last ten years, the remixes to “Ignition” and “Step In The Name Of Love,” and performed them with The Roots on back up duties.

Now we’ve never doubted that R. Kelly was a talented guy, it’s just that some of us felt that he wasted his talent on some pretty low-brow songs. We’re all very glad we watched this performance though because it reinforced a few things that we may have forgotten amongst all the scandals and episodes of Trapped In The Closet: 1) R. Kelly sure knows how to write a catchy song.  2) R. Kelly can SAING when he wants to. (Check out the impressively restrained and tasteful vocal run he does at 3:50! Take notes Beyoncé!) and 3) We forgot to dig up our Loveland bootleg last night.

We don’t know what’s gotten into Kellz lately, but brother man has been SANGIN lately.  We aren’t mad though!

The performance mirrors his recent appearance at the Soul Train Awards where he did a two part version of the song, putting doing his best Ray Charles impersonation during the second half.

We hear that Kellz’ new album Love Letter is one of the best things he’s done since the old Loveland bootleg from 2002.

Love Letter hits stores on December 14th.
