Pop quiz–Can you name at least two current black action stars, excluding Will Smith and Denzel Washington? Or the last time you saw an interracial couple on the big screen where the storyline didn’t revolve around the color of their skin and/or didn’t end as tragically as a Shakespearean play? Columnist J.F. Sargent at humor site, Cracked.com explores some of the racial and sexist stereotypes Hollywood just can’t seem to let go of. Even with a black man as president, mainstream audiences aren’t comfortable or just don’t care to watch black actor/actresses unless we are in certain supportive roles: the sidekick, the BBF (Best Black Friend), or the domestic (The Help). The author states:

So how does this play out in real movies? Black characters end up in supporting roles, instead of being well-developed characters. They’re just there so we can “judge the other (white) characters by how they treat them.” In other words, we certainly don’t root for racist characters, and we’ll boo racist stereotypes. But our open-mindedness usually stops at the point of actually paying to see a black leading man. Other than Will Smith.

Nivea For Men has been running a campaign aimed at getting men to step their grooming game up called “Look Like You Give A Damn.” As Madison Avenue is well aware, men are pigs, and if they are making an attempt to brainwash us into buying something we don’t want, they feel the need to come down to our caveman levels. If you believe the ad execs, men as a group generally don’t care about anything that doesn’t go “zoom”, have boobs, come fried on a stick or is played in a stadium. They don’t even think we want to bathe, just spray this on and peel the dirt off. So you have to imagine that the level of inexperience in targeting African-American men is exponentially inept.

The version of this campaign targeting African-Americans features the added tagline “re-civilize yourself” to the already condescending “look like you give a damn.” This wording is accompanied by an image of a well-groomed Black man holding what is supposed to be his own head with an Afro and a beard, his “un-civilized” self.

The imagery coupled with the words offends me on several levels. For one, the implication that wearing an afro or beard is uncivilized is terribly ignorant. Dr. Cornel West, who sports a very prominent Afro and beard, is one of America’s foremost thinkers. You can disagree with his personal politics all you want, but you can hardly call him uncivilized.

Secondly, being clean-shaven is not an option for all of us. Like many African-Americans, my skin keloids and close shaving of the face and head is not always a good idea. It can create in-grown hairs which result in bumps for the average person, but can be permanent for those of us that keloid. This is not to say we can’t be NEAT or well groomed, but that crew cut standard is not universal. Many Black people I know wear their hair long to prevent (or even cover) keloid scars.

RELATED: Natural Hair Pat-Downs Bring Charges Of Racial Profiling

RELATED: Bye Bye Relaxed Hair, Hello Natural Hair!

Thirdly, one of the ads targeted at white men features a man with a low-cut beard. It’s edged up but not clean. Why was this not a viable option for ads targeting Black men?

I get that advertisers rely on extremes to make their point in the 30 seconds that they have our attention, but this attempt to reach Black men was just lazy. Below is how they targeted the “general population.” There is no “re-civilize yourself” tag for them. They just look smooth and ready for work or play.

Furthermore, the Black man in the ad looks like he is holding a lifeless, decapitated head. It’s a jarring, violent image that would seem more befitting in a Mortkal Kombat game. But maybe that’s exactly what they were trying to say. “Finish Him.” Conform or be killed. Isn’t that what “civilized” nations do?

Lastly, for the women who insist this isn’t racist (there are many of you out there saying that it isn’t) and are happy to have another ally in the crusade to get your men to be neater, consider this. If the ad were for a woman’s grooming product featuring a straight-haired black woman holding her severed, afro-sporting head, getting ready to hurl it down aisle sixteen at Target celebrating her new self, would you feel civilized?

Let me know on Twitter @JLBarrow

UPDATE: Nivea’s parent company, Beiersdorf USA, emailed us this statement to Adweek apologizing for the ad:

“We are deeply sorry for a recent ‘Re-civilized’ Nivea For Men ad. This ad was inappropriate and offensive. Diversity and equal opportunity are crucial values at Beiersdorf and we do not tolerate insensitivity. It was never our intention to offend anyone and for this we are deeply sorry. This ad will never be used again. Beiersdorf, as a company, represents diversity, tolerance and equal opportunity. Direct and indirect discrimination must be ruled out in all decisions and in all areas of the company.”

Evidently, Questlove took exception to this ad as well:

Warner Bros. is preparing for the limited release of a collection of controversial racist cartoons that were pulled from syndication in 1968.

Called the “Censored Eleven,” these eleven Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoon shorts feature blatantly stereotypical depictions of blacks and have been deemed to controversial for contemporary general audiences. The offensive material is so pervasive in these cartoons that no amount of editing could make them suitable for airing on television. Though a few of them are currently in the public domain and pop up periodically on low-budget compilations, they have been largely unseen since 1968 and have been sought after by animation collectors for decades for their historical significance.

Warner Bros, who owns the cartoons, will be releasing the cartoons in 2011 as part of their Warner Archive series of releases, which are available in limited quantities through their website.

Actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers, known for his acting roles in films like Bend It Like Beckham and Woody Allen’s Match Point as well as his starring role in the cable series The Tudors, caused a drunken ruckus in a NYC’s JFK airport in which he used the much dreaded “N” word.

According to RadarOnline.com, the Irish actor was banned from the airline earlier this month after United Airlines employees prevented him from boarding a 7AM flight from New York City to Los Angeles after the actor had been drinking vodka heavily in the first class lounge.

When airline employees confronted him, he grew belligerent and let loose the “N” word towards an employee after they told him that he would not be allowed on the flight.

Meyers has a history of alcohol related incidents. In 2007, he was arrested in Dublin airport for being drunk and in breach of peace just seven months after leaving a rehab program. Those charges were later dropped.

Dear Blackman,

I know calling a black man ‘boy’ is definitely considered racist and offensive and has long-standing negative connotations but would calling an adult black male ‘kid’ cause racial offense?

-RB

The Blackman:

Hi RB,

Calling a black man “boy” or “kid” are only racially offensive pending on the context and intention on how the term is being used. If a person uses it with the purpose of trying to condescend or belittle a black man then of course if is offensive. If it is used in a playful, slang-oriented way then I don’t see it being used in a disparaging way at all.
Just like many terms and phrases that are used in society, it is all based on the intention of the speaker on whether it is offensive or not.

I hope this helps.

The superstar emcee held his party at London’s Merah nightclub after taking home honors for Best International Male Solo, off the platinum success of Blueprint 3.

According to various reports, the planned celebratory night was mired by constant fights prompted by overzealous fans pushing and shoving in vain attempts to get to Jay.

Kim Dawson, a reporter for the UK’s Daily Star, alleges that black people were allowed free access to the VIP area without scrutiny, while any white attendee was immediately shunned.

“I’ve been to countless showbiz bashes but never have I met meatheads like those at the Jay-Z do [party]. Jay-Z is a megastar and yet it was clear white people were not welcome in his VIP area,” Dawson stated. “While the red rope was lifted for black guests to breeze through, let’s just say it stayed down if your face didn’t fit. I have never felt so intimidated. It left me feeling like a mauled dog.”

Dear Enlightened Brother a/k/a The Black Man -

After witnessing the hubris of the Cambridge Mass Police department press conference, I’m conflicted. Not about the issue regarding the arrest and how ridiculous the arrest was in the first place, but on how to respond to it, as Dr. Dyson said- “A collision between ignorance and amnesia.”

Unfortunately, anger is the first to demand my attention, yet giving into that emotion is counter productive. In the Obama Era that we live in-what would you do TBM – as President of the United States?

Would you ignore it in public but stick it to them behind the scenes, or really just let it go? I’m curious, because President Obama stands at the threshold of either bringing focus to the long overlooked and ignored issues in this country or taking the road most traveled – ambivalence.

The Symbol

TBM:

Hi Symbol,

There is a time and place to handle situations. I feel that by President Obama giving his opinion on the matter on a nationwide primetime speech, when there are a bunch of issues that could have been addressed, it was his way of letting the public know that even though he is Black and the President of the United States there are still instances that occur in our society that are racially inflicted. I believe he wanted to make sure the masses knew what happened so it would not get swept under the rug by the media.

I believe he handled it in a good manner. I am sure it will be dealt with more behind the scenes.

It is important to address this issue. If I were the president, I would have addressed it as well especially since it was relevant in current events. For an issue like this to really get addressed you want people to pay attention and be aware of this. Timing is key. This can be handled both overtly and covertly. I would also point out that one person can not fix this problem. It also has to be supported by the communities in the U.S. When these issues occur, we can’t just let them slide. We must do something about it. Report it and let it be known. Bring awareness to the masses. These types of situations anger most people but we don’t want to do anything negative to bring ourselves or anyone else around us down. We can choose to use the energy of anger to motivate us into creating a better situation.

“Anger is only one letter short of danger.”

That’s my 99 Cents worth.

TBM

I know some people believe that with Obama in the White House race has become less of an issue, but is there ever a time to stop questioning the status quo. Curtains touches on some very real issues, but is anybody listening? Watch the video below:

“Black Folks” will be rotating during two different MTV shows: MTV JAMS & THE FRESHMEN. Curtains second mixtape “The Great Adventures of Dope Boy C: DoPE for President” will drop the week of June 16th.

On Wednesday afternoon both MTV Multiplayer and Kotaku posted stories detailing how they had received copies of Animal Crossing: Wild World for the DS from Nintendo. Because these carts were meant to show off the character importing feature of Animal Crossing: City Folk for the Wii, the DS carts were already opened and had saved games featuring a ton of money and bonuses. Both Multiplayer and Kotaku discovered one unexpected twist, though: a strong racial slur repeated during conversations with in-game character Baabara.

We contacted Nintendo regarding these reports and received the following official response:

“Previously played copies of the 2005 DS game Animal Crossing: Wild World were sent to 14 members of the media to demonstrate the ability of players to transfer items to the new Animal Crossing: City Folk for Wii. We regret that an offensive phrase was included without our knowledge via a wireless function that allows user-generated catchphrases to spread virally from one game to the next. This version is limited to 14 copies created for media review purposes only and is not available at retailers. We sincerely apologize for the incident and are working with media who received the game cards to return them to Nintendo immediately.”

This is a surprising slip-up from the family-friendly company with what is perhaps their most family-friendly game, but at least they admitted to their mistake immediately. 1UP also received a copy of the DS cartridge and has been requested to return it, as stated in their response.
