Keri Hilson has a message for for the hip-hop world:  “Rappers need not apply!”  In an interview with EurWeb, the R&B singer made it clear that she has no intention of getting her pretty girl rock on with any male celebrities.  Hilson states:

“I would never say “never,” but I want something real. I want real love.  I don’t want this red carpet Hollywood love. I feel like they’re easily penetrated, and that’s something that I don’t want. I don’t want publicity. I want love.”

While we certainly understand Miss Keri’s concerns, is she being a bit harsh in her assessment of celebrity men? Sound off in the comment section.

5. Jay-Z The Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse

Hov stans, have a seat. The album was good. The problem was it is the follow up to one of the best rap albums ever. You mean to tell me after giving the streets soul stirring rap songs like “This Can’t Be Life” and “Heart of the City” you follow that up with a mediocre sample of Pac’s “Me and My Girlfriend?” Sorry, that just won’t fly here. Plus, the concept of BP2 being a double album was unnecessary. The result of Jigga’s ambition was an unfocused album. We love Jay’s flows and all, but he overstayed his welcome in our stereos with that set. Glad he moved on to the next one.

4. Lloyd Banks The Hunger For More 2

Lloyd Banks is the best lyricist out of the G-Unit camp. He made the album a sequel because he wanted to regain the success of his debut collection. While HFM2 did receive positive reviews from critics and fans alike, he lands on the list because there was nothing new about HFM2. We are kinda sick of the guns, drugs, and street life rhetoric. That was cool when he was transitioning from the streets to a successful life, but now that he’s toured the globe and entered another tax bracket, rap about what you’re living now.

3. R. Kelly TP 3: Reloaded

12 Play is the quintessential R. Kelly album. there is nothing but hits on that effort. We let TP2.com slide because of bangers like “Feelin On Yo Booty,” “Fiesta,” and the sentimental “I Wish.” All of that love and admiration went out the window when TP3 hit the streets. This is one of the worst sequels for a number of reasons. The Trapped In The Closet saga was cool for the first five. “Slow Wind” had every chick in the club trying to get in touch with her West Indian roots to entice potential suitors. For that, men across America thank him. However, am I the only one who finds it creepy R. Kelly uses random objects in his sex analogies?  “Remote Control.” “Sex In The Kitchen.” What’s next? “I Wanna Hit It In The Bus Terminal Bathroom?”

2. Ghostface Killah More Fish

In 2006, Ghostface experienced a resurgence in his career thanks to his damn near classic, Fishscale. Being that he was riding the success wave, Def Jam tried to capitalize on it by dropping More Fish shortly thereafter. We can’t blame Tony Starks because he said in interviews how he didn’t think putting More Fish out would help, but as usual, the label only cared about dollar signs. MF consisted mostly of unreleased tracked that heavily featured his Theodore Unit soldiers. Needless to say, the soldiers of Theodore Unit are nowhere as great as Ghostface on the mic.

1. Method Man Tical 0: The Prequel

The third installment in the Tical series was the epitome of craptastic. Fans and critics hated the album for its generic party tracks. Consumers complained there were too many guests that overshadowed Meth. The thought of guests stealing shine from Method Man was crazy considering the amount of scene-stealing verses in his catalog. The commercial direction the album took was due in part to Diddy and Harve Pierre’s input. Meth explained, “On the third LP, it was suggested (by Def Jam) to bring in Harve Pierre and P. Diddy. Who am I to argue? Puff knows how to sell some records. But that wasn’t the direction to go in, and I know that.” Don’t try to place all the blame squarely on the shoulders of Diddy and Pierre, if Meth knew that wasn’t the road he wanted to travel down, all he had to do was jump out of the car. Scratches and scars heal. Bad albums are forever.

In this exclusive video premiere on TheUrbanDaily, Dan Charnas, author of the epic new book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, discusses a very controversial story within it.

Cash Money Records, the original home of Lil Wayne and the progenitor of the Young Money  crew, got their landmark deal in 1998 in large part because of the efforts of a young woman named Wendy Day, who ran an organization called the Rap Coalition, dedicated to helping rappers get better contracts.

But in an ironic turn of events, when it came time for Cash Money to pay Wendy Day the money they owed her, they refused. And that, Charnas says in the video, is when things got complicated…

Dan Charnas, author of The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, is the managing editor of InteractiveOne. Charnas, a Pulitzer Prize Fellow, was one of the first writers for the Source magazine and part of the generation of young writers who helped create hip-hop journalism. His writing has appeared in the Village Voice, the Washington Post, GIANT, and newspapers around the country. He spent 15 years in the music business, starting in the mailroom of Profile Records in the late 80s, and was VP of A&R for Rick Rubin’s American Recordings.

Four years ago Jay-Z issued a lyrical taunt to his fellow rappers: “What you call money, I pay more in taxes.” Turns out his line was more than just a boast.

Jay-Z pulled in $63 million over the past 12 months, earning him his second straight hip-hop cash crown. His income level places him in the 35% tax bracket, which means he’ll pay Uncle Sam about $22 million this year–a sum greater than the total earnings of any other rap star besides second-ranked Diddy.

The top 20 earners on this year’s Cash Kings list racked up about $300 million in earnings, an average of $15 million per artist. Remarkably, the total is roughly the same as last year, despite a troubled economy and a music industry thrown into flux by new technology.

Nnete from Houston’s 97.9 The Box Madd Hatta Morning Show interviewed Waka Flocka Flame Wednesday and the rapper, who has 4 mixtapes releasing soon, explains why he’s not worrying about dropping an official album:

Man I ain’t finna make myself hot and then have them eating off of me and then I’m just left with nothing?

Nnete goes on to ask Waka if he thinks record deals are overated and here was his response:

Psshh Don’t You? Man, (shakes his head) folks aint cutting no checks man, …. At the end of the day, it’s on me…like one single and people saying ‘oh man, you should drop an album, you hot!’…Who? I aint finna go double-wood for ‘Oh Let’s Do It’, real talk!

Waka then mentions that he plans to make himself hot first and then use the labels to get him in movies, tv and on the radio! He later says he is just trying to learn the business right now and even makes a comparison between artists and prostitutes, saying:

You are a prostitute. You have to sell yourself.

Some things are just so cliche that no matter how much you try and avoid them they reappear over and over. But in the name of cleaning house for 2010 can we please bid adieu to the following lies rappers tell?

6. The “I Won’t Wife it” lie- For some reason rappers love to proclaim their pimping skills. Remember a tid bit ago when Jay-Z said those famous words- “Not for nothing never happen, I’ll be forever macking” (Big Pimpin) I guess that’s until you meet Beyonce- huh! And what about the little jab he threw at Bey on “Minute Man” (“Get your independent ass outta here…question?”)

5. The “I don’t write my rhymes down” lie-  Ok maybe Wayne can get away with this but the rest of yall- give it up!

4. The “I sold drugs and was a king-pin before I rapped” lie- Haven’t we all learned from Rick Ross that all lies come to the light!

3.The “I do drugs” lie- So you mean to tell me that every rapper has had some stint with marijuana or liquorr. Even Bow Wow has claimed to be a little messed up in the brain over some weed. Actually he may have been when he did this album:

2.The “I’m a sex guru” lie- Not every rapper has a magic stick but they will surely try and make you believe they do.

1. The “I hate cops” lie- Sure, you hate them up until you need to call them to protect you!

The decade is dawning and now is the time that we will be bombarded with the most popular songs from 2000-present. And when we see the rappers/hip-hop artist on the list it begs the question, where are they now? Gone are the days of EPMD’s ‘I stick to underground, keep the crossover,’ because now crossover means big dollars once an artist gets mainstream airplay and endorsements. Where are many of the artists who started the decade out with the mainstream-pop appeal? They now have almost no airplay or can only do small underground venues.

If we use history as our guide, it seems that after about three years they will expire—like a bag of Doritos. Either the big bad, hit making “machine” kicks them out by no longer promoting and marketing their work as much, or the angst-ridden artist on the inside self-destructs and they become jail birds. Either way, Jay-Z and LL Cool J, two artists who enjoy success for ten plus years in the rap game, are the exceptions not the rule. We know that the fault can not always lay with the artist, maybe we (the audience) just moved on to the next big thing that was younger, more hunger, and even more hood then the last.  We ask you: Do Rappers Have A Shelf Life?

BETWEEN THE LINES: Should Rappers Go On Strike?

Let’s Take a Walk Down “where are they now” lane:

Every year, MTV’s Hip-Hop Brain Trust puts out a controversial list of rappers of whom they deem the “hottest” at the moment, and every year the public chimes in with their own dissenting arguments of who belongs and who doesn’t.

The list, which measures the type of career year an artist is having as well as his talent, ranks the rappers using this criteria: rhyme skill, flow, musical prowess, as well as buzz, impact, commercial success and impact.

This year, MTV says that a rapper who turns 40 on December 4th has reclaimed his #1 spot at the top of the game, right now. Join the discussion. Do you agree with this list?

• 1. Jay-Z

What MTV said: “He’s had the most acclaimed career in rap history. But even with all that lore, all that respect, all that prestige and all that money, Jay-Z continues to add luster to his legacy with time-transcending music, multiple successful business ventures and his dominant influence over the game. MTV News’ Greatest MC of All Time is 2009′s Hottest MC in the Game. Hov isn’t just an elite MC that pushes the culture, the Brooklyn native is the standard-bearer, the leader, a source of inspiration and aspirations — Hov’s the guy we all look to see how far hip-hop can go. What MTV said: “Drake proclaims himself to be “the one, twice over/ The new 11.” He’s definitely one of kind. We haven’t seen a single mixtape as universally triumphant as his So Far Gone. We’ve seen guys turn the street-music hustle into instant ‘hood-icon status and get record deals before, like Young Jeezy (who actually got two deals, one with the group Boyz N Da Hood as well as a solo deal), the Diplomats and of course 50 Cent and G-Unit. This kid Drake, however, is a different type of beast. Technology allowed his tape to spread wider and faster than CDs, and So Far Gone’s word-of-mouth buzz made it a must-have download. He toured the country on the strength of the mixtape while songs fromSFG flew from underground to radio rotation.”

The Gucc didn’t just break through this year; he’s been able to leapfrog all the to way to the middle of the pack by having a cult following of pavement dwellers in the ‘hood and charming Middle America with a gold-tooth grin and a gaggle of guest spots on high-charting pop hits.”

• #7 Young Jeezy

What MTV said: “Young Jeezy may not yet have a mainstream, marquee name like some of his platinum peers, but the Snowman is an undeniable rap goliath. In hip-hop, his moniker holds just as much weight as the other big dogs. How else could he bring out Kanye West and Usher during the big Birthday Bash concert in his hometown of Atlanta last summer, and then turn around in 2009 and usher out surprise guests Mary J. Blige and Lil Wayne? And by the way, when Jay-Z decided to perform his earthshaking “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)” in concert for the first time anywhere on the globe, he came out during Jeezy’s set at the “Summer Jam” show in New Jersey. And he followed that with a prominent slot on Lil Wayne’s “America’s Most Wanted” tour last summer, which ran for six weeks and was one of the most successful tours of the year thus far.”

What MTV said: “Fabolous started his Loso’s Way campaign by telling the world that it was “his time,” and the boy from Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood lived up to his claim. Loso’s Way— a concept project inspired in part by the gangster film “Carlito’s Way” — became his first #1 LP on the Billboard albums chart, selling nearly 99,000 units in its first week of release. All year, we’ve been hearing “It’s Loso, in case you didn’t know, so …” for a reason: Fab never runs out of ammo with his tireless punch lines and swag.”

• #9 50 Cent

What MTV said: “Over the past year, 50 Cent chose not to roam on one of his main predatory terrains, the Billboard charts, by continuing to hold back the release of his long-awaited Before I Self-Destruct LP. Instead, the G-Unit General began to fully realize the potential of another region in which he’d already planted his flag: the Internet.”

• #10 Raekwon

What MTV said: “They’ve got him behind the pot again! Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon the Chef came back to cook up one of the most potent offerings of 2009 with Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II, which is the hottest album in the streets right now. And no, the Brain Trust isn’t just overcome with nostalgia — the conceptual Cuban Linx II picks up where its timeless predecessor left off a decade and a half ago. Faced with a possible life sentence in federal prison, Chicago rapper Terrance Boykin, aka Bump J, accepted a plea deal that carries a minimum seven year sentence. In the plea deal signed June 26, Boykin admitted his guilt in the Jan. 4, 2007 robbery of the Chase Bank, 800 Madison St., which netted $108,135. He also admitted threatening bank employees with a gun.

Under federal sentencing guidelines, Boykin, 28, faced between 37 and 46 months in prison for the bank robbery itself, but life in prison for menacing bank employees with a .45 caliber handgun. He will be required to serve a mandatory minimum seven years on the charge of brandishing a gun during a crime of violence. He’s scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Charles R. Norgle on Sept. 1.

How do you feel about how Black people having negative images in the media? Is there anything we can do to fix it?

Hi Sharon Smalls,

I feel that there is a lot of focus on  the negative things that happen in the Black community and there is a lack of glorification of the positive things that occur.
There is numerous amount of great things that happen in communities worldwide that stem from Black people. If you watch television  you can feel that a black people  only excel in being an athlete, musician (in particular a rapper), or some sort of crime.

Sometimes it is very sad even to turn on a channels such as the Black Entertainment Television and watch these stereotypes. This does not promote any positive images to the younger generation.

As far as changing it, the most important thing is to be accountable of our own actions. That is what you have to most control of. After that you can work on making your community a better place to live in. Even just helping one person can go a long way.

Taking an indifferent stance on this is this worse thing you can do. If you keep watching it is only going to get worse. The more people that do positive things the better it is for our growth and development.

Spending your time blaming “the white man” or any other people for any of these things occurring is wasted energy. You can talk forever about what happened during slavery and all throughout history. It’s the past and it does not make sense to live in the past. We need to live in the present. I am not saying that what happened is not messed up but dwelling on it is not going to change anything. You can acknowledge it and move forward.

The work needs to start in the households and in the communities. If self-esteem, Self-worth, confidence, critical thinking, aspiration is implemented there, then whatever images are portrayed in the media will not matter nor affect the Black community.

That’s my 99 cents worth.

The 2007 BP Rocawear contest winner is looking to network around common interests in the music industry. Check out  Hood Hard Movement. The group is about creating hot mixtapes and touring with other talented BP members.

Sitting next to our resident film critic Ethan Alter has its merits. My movie questions never go unanswered, and by way of proximity, I’ll never have to get Netflix. Recently I copped Wanted to see how Angelina Jolie could sexy up a gun from Ethan, and in the film, there was Common as an assassin. More than a cameo, Common essentially turned what would have been an otherwise awesome action flick into drinking game based around when he looked like he was about to say “Chicago, ya’ll” and pine for Pharrell’s approval.

Now, contrary to popular belief, I’m all for rappers getting their shine on in film. Law & Order: SVU wouldn’t be what it was if it wasn’t for Ice-T and Andre 3000 was the only good part about Four Brothers. But at some point, rappers who are better at rapping becoming actors has to stop.

Here’s a couple of rappers (and one singer) who will inevitably ruin your favorite film franchise.

Common in Terminator: Salvation

Like Harrison Ford and Orlando Bloom, Hollywood’s looking to make Christian Bale a double bill. Already the best Batman (sorry, Michael Keaton), Bale is going to be the adult version of John Connor in the fourth installation of the apocalyptic Terminator saga. Only some one convinced the studio that it would be a good idea to bring Common along for the ride.

It’s not.

What’s wrong with this?

The only thing worse than clearly seeing The RZA’s Wu-Tang tattoo in American Gangster was having to sit through Common’s performance. It was almost as bad as listening to Okayplayer people lecture on me on how ahead of its time Electric Circus was, when they know it wasn’t.

Unless Common takes on the role of a rapping robot who can have his entire programming rewired by an android who bears a striking resemblance to Erykah Badu, I don’t want to see it.

Even if that is the case, I still don’t want to see it.
