VIA 24HH:

Speaking of Shady business, Mr. Balls in my face, A.K.A. Eminem made a surprise visit to a Los Angeles Jay-Z show in which the two performed their song “Renegade” off the classic first Blueprint album. Of course the crowd went nuts and it even looked like Em was wearing the same outfit from the MTV Movie Awards.

Anyway though I am hearing that this ‘surprise’ visit was actually a bit of a preview of more things to come. Jay is very close to wrapping up the Blueprint 3 and it is being said that when that happens Jay and Em will embark on a super tour together. Duo headlining acts usually do big numbers on tour and in this economy concerts are hurting as bad as record sales. It looks like Em and Jay may be coming to save the day.

I pray this is true and can happen. I have seen both Jay and Em in concert separately so I know together it would be monstrous. Let’s just hope Bruno doesn’t show up to any shows for some surprise landings…

Slim Shady’s combined totals also out-sell the No. 2 holders, The Beatles‘ 27,591,000.

1. , 31,127,000. First charted: 1999. Eminem, 36, is the top male artist and the top , and the #2 rap artist. Nelly’s 2000 debut, Country Grammar, is his best-selling album. It has sold 8,454,000 copies. 10. Jay-Z, 19,379,000. First charted: 1996. Jay-Z, 39, is the #3 rap artist of the decade. 2003′s The Black Album is his best-selling album of this decade. It has sold 3,338,000 copies.

While Eminem hasn’t relied exclusively on Twitter to get the word out, the effort has produced some impressive results. According to Compete, Eminem.com reached 113,868 unique visitors during April, while the most popular of his tweets — which linked to TheRelapse.com on May 7 — reached at least 41,704 people within just one week, according to an analysis of data provided to AdAge by Tweetreach. And data provided by Native Digital, the start-up behind music-buzz tracker We Are Hunted, suggest that Eminem was the most-talked-about artist on Twitter last week, the week before the album’s release.
Dr. Dre’s long awaited album Detox is beginning to become more myth than reality. However, frustrated fans can officially blame one MC for the delay: Eminem.

Click here to see Star & Buc Wild talk about ‘Detox’

In a recent interview with DJ Semtex on BBC radio, Slim Shady himself took the heat for Detox’s delay.

“With Dre, Dre’s got a lot of material for this record,” Em told DJ Semtex.

While the working time period for Detox has been highly speculated, with the initial announcement of the album coming in the early part of the new millennium, Eminem says that Dre has been hard and work on the album for the past year.

Slim Shady also revealed that his latest album, Relapse, is the reason Detox will suffer further delays.

Click here to answer if anyone cared about Eminem’s new album!

“He’s recorded a lot of material,” Eminem added. “I think that more so than anything, before his album, he basically put aside, he was working on his record for a good time period, I would say probably a year, a year and some change straight, he was working on his record and he basically put that on hold once we got on the road with my record, which I’m extremely grateful for you know.”

Detox still has no formal release date. Eminem’s latest effort, Relapse is expected to sell more than 600,000 units in the first seven days of commercial release.

I’m sure critics have their purpose, and they’re supposed to do what they do, but sometimes they get a little carried away with what they think someone should have done, rather than concerning themselves with what he did. - Duke Ellington

One of the biggest obstacles to writing a good album review is having the time to really listen to the music uninterrupted and over a week ago I was presented with a rare opportunity. I had a four-hour flight to Arizona for Sha Money XL’s One Stop Shop producer conference and the Relapse album leaked. So before I left the office I loaded up my flash drive with the mp3s and the Rihanna nudie pics. Hey, it was a long ass flight.

I’ve been an admirer of Em’s work ever since I interviewed him for The Source’s Mic Check section way back when Clinton was in office. I consider myself quite familiar with his content, flow, themes, etc. and I looked forward to hearing what one of the best pure lyricists in the game had to say after four years, especially since I named Relapse one of the most anticipated albums of 2009. But after a good two hours it felt like a TV had thrown up on me. The constant barrage of disjointed pop culture references and scrotum cheese jokes was too much. I raised the white flag. With the exception of “Beautiful” and “Underground” the “shock and awe” campaign didn’t move me. But more importantly, with half the world already playing the leak just like me and Twittering all day about it, I just couldn’t justify the hours of my life that I wouldn’t get back defending why I was disappointed. I was too lazy to hate.

When I first started writing record reviews in the 1990s I felt like I was doing a public service. From then to maybe five years ago journalists actually got to hear music before the masses and took pride in letting folks know where they should place their hard earned money. At The Source we fought over who would get to write the lead review of the biggest album coming out that month. It was equivalent to screaming “first” on a message board except your post stayed at the top for everyone to see.

But now that people aren’t even buying much music, there are a million bloggers chiming in on a project, and albums get streamed on MySpace or Blackplanet prior to release does one critic’s opinion still matter? Frankly, I feel like album reviews are going the way of the word ‘album’ itself, CD singles and Tower Records. (R.I.P.)

“A publicist friend (whose roster includes ALL urban, not just rap) tells me that she and her label cohorts do not care one iota about reviews anymore. And neither do the artists,” says veteran Carlito Rodriguez, one-time Editor-In-Chief of The Source magazine. “In our current cult of personality-driven world, I’d say that reviews from certain people or media outlets do generate buzz. Do they affect sales? Nah.”

Before you jump on me, yes I do share my opinions constantly via lists and blogs for the Urban Daily. The difference for me is that those are a) fun and b) more akin to the real conversations I have with my peers in real life. Everyone loves to debate the top “10 greatest this” and the “20 worst that” so it feels natural. I love to take jabs at songs, trends or antics that I think are either dumb or will stimulate conversation but there is no fun in telling you how bad an entire album is. But I decided to ask some of my peers who still do.

“It’s obvious that album reviews- especially in hip-hop, are less notable then they were 10 years ago,” says Rob Markman, Music Editor for XXL magazine. “[But] with the hip-hop conversation broadening to the infinite boarders that is the Internet, there are a growing number of fans who look toward print publications to help formulate an opinion that is more centralized, and less bias.”

“Good reviews put the music in proper context and reveal nuances of the music that the reader may previously had been unaware of,” adds Alvin Blanco, who used to edit reviews for Allhiphop.com. “What if you’re a passing fan or just got into Eminem. It would help to see where the album falls in his discography. Sure, what the album is here and now is important, but what led up to said album has some relevance.”

To both their points, I can see giving an artist like Eminem a proper set-up to familiarize the unfamiliar since he has been away for four years. And with the Redman & Method Man album dropping today some context for the uninitiated is definitely warranted. But I respectfully disagree that any one magazine or blog still holds the ability to sway public opinion on any real level. For better or worse the Internet is the home of the passionate who have their minds made up and reviews mostly appeal to those looking for direction and guidance.

Hence, this is a very humbling time to be a music critic. The more the playing field is leveled the more you become aware of your own mortality, but the game isn’t over. To answer my own question from earlier, we still need tastemakers and filters, especially with the glut of music being shoved down our throats, but I liken myself to a DJ now. A DJ is not going to play what he/she thinks is wack and as tastemakers music journalists may do more good to the industry by simply telling the fans what they like. The most popular blogs on the web filter through the garbage and tell you what’s hot by posting it with maybe a line or two of pithy copy. The Twitter link is the review 2.0.

“As writers with vested interest in pop culture, reviews do matter,” says Rodriguez who is producing a feature film based on the life of DJ Disco Wiz, hip-hop’s first Latino DJ. “As do our voices, because, quite simply, we’re doing our part to chronicle the social psychology of our days and times, beyond whatever works we’re reviewing.”

So if you really care at all why I was disappointed in Relapse it’s not that Eminem can’t rhyme or that the beats were not good. I simply feel that the formula, no matter how well executed, is old: Make fun of dead male idol, fantasize about having sex with wholesome starlet, yell at your mom, pop a pill, insert a few “faggots,” smack a lesbian, fart and repeat. I can get all of the same lyrical gymnastics, macabre story telling and mind-bending punchlines with just a touch more soul listening to Pharoahe Monch. Tweet that.

In the words of Jack Nicholson in the original Batman franchise, “Never rub another man’s rhubarb.” In this case, the rhubarb is Mariah Carey and the way Em’s been rubbing that on “Bagpipes From Baghdad,” [click here to listen] you can see why Nick Cannon is so mad!

Relapse is in stores tomorrow and all the hype (real and imagined) has been throw in the pot to get folks to cop this album. I’m not surprised that Em went to his old bag of tricks to try and bait people into giving him a response. It’s that same bag of tricks that may be his undoing this go-round.

It took less than 24 hours since the leak of Eminem’s highly anticipated comeback effort Relapse to generate some controversy. Nick Cannon has taken issue with Eminem’s “Bagpipes From Baghdad,” which takes shots at Cannon and his wife, singer Mariah Carey.

In a new blog posting, Cannon responds to the track saying, “I’m taking full action on you Eminem. I don’t know why no one has stood up to your bitch ass yet. But I guess it’s going to take a corny, wack rapping, boy toy from Nickelodeon to set you straight. And trust, I am going to be relentless. Even though I got a lot of other obligations and occupations, you are my new full time job ‘homey’!”

Listen to “Bagpipes From Baghdad” below:

Cannon also brought up one controversial moment in Eminem’s past, referencing the freestyle in which Eminem disparaged black women.

“I asked myself should I go find this Bitch and just whoop his little ass? Let’s not forget about Eminem’s amateur mixtape rants of calling African Americans Nigger and how he hates “Black Bitches”. How did we let him get away with that in the first place?! He is a natural born racist in disguise. Someone tell this coward that he finally barked up the wrong tree.”

While our boy DMX is getting it in for real, Eminem is having some fun with rehab.

To accompany his new album Relapse, Eminem has created a unique viral website titled “Popsomp Hills,” a fictional rehabilitation clinic which makes patients worse after treatment.

At www.PopsompHills.com, visitors are greeted by a quote from Ralph Nader on addiction treatment and links to a consultation number and email address.

Once digging deeper, unsuspecting readers will quickly discover the site’s true intent.

Emimen & Dr. Dre/ Relapse & Detox
Producers: Dr. Dre, Eminem, DJ Premier,
Leads: “Crack A Bottle” “Could Have Been You”
Quotable: It’s sorta like pourin’ Draino down a live volcano.
You never know what’ll happen next, it may blow.
Same things happen to the beats when Dre blows

Yes, I’m cheating by combining these, but am I really? Up until last year Dr. Dre’s Detox was given an improbable November ’08 release date and then got pushed for Em’s Relapse project (going clean is only fun after a weekend-long bender in Vegas, right?). At that point I had officially put Detox in the same box with my New York Knicks championship hopes and wasn’t even going to list it for ’09. But then the leak happened. “Could Have Been You” featuring R. Kelly and 50 Cent found its way onto the Internet. Dre’s anger at the premature release only gives credibility to the track and makes me think this might actually happen.

The other reason I’ve put them together is that we know that Em is writing most of Dre’s rhymes and Dre is doing most of Em’s beats so isn’t the separation of barcodes at Best Buy a mere formality?

As for the music itself I have it on very good authority that the time off since 2004′s Encore has done Eminem some good. “Lyrically, he is going somewhere else with it,” said one person who I caught rummaging through wastebaskets for crumpled up rhyme notes at Interscope records. “He’s hungry, gotta chip on his shoulder. He’s heavily influenced by what he grew up on for his first album, like The Pharcyde and Masta Ace.”

The Pharcyde and Masta Ace?? So Em is about to put a size whatever limited-edition Jordan up the ass of the rap game. Did you hear the flow on that last verse of “Crack A Bottle?” And he isn’t even finished.

“It wasn’t close to finished, and it even has me doing guide vocals for Dre as a suggestion of how he could lay his verses down,” Em told Billboard.com. “It’s like someone catches you peeping in your window before you got the Spider Man costume all zipped up! Nobody is supposed to see that. We are gonna finish it up, though, and get it out there how it’s supposed to be.”

As for Detox, just listening to the rough and ugly version of the “Could Have Been You” instrumental below lets me know the man is not playing. But after waiting this long I will accept nothing less than the most immaculately produced hip-hop album ever. No pressure, Dre.

Eminem took some time out of his busy recording schedule to speak to Billboard.com about his upcoming and highly anticipated release, Relapse.

“Me and Dre are back in the lab like the old days, man,” Eminem says. “Just him banging away on tracks and me getting that little spark that makes me write to it. I don’t have chemistry like that with anyone else as far as producers go — not even close. Dre will end up producing the majority of the tracks on Relapse.’We are up to our old mischievous ways … let’s just leave it at that.”

Em also spoke on “Crack a Bottle” (originally referred to as “Number One” [click to listen]), a song that recently leaked. It left the Detroit emcee “really heated. It wasn’t close to finished, and it even has me doing guide vocals for Dre as a suggestion of how he could lay his verses down. It’s like someone catches you peeping in your window before you got the Spider-Man costume all zipped up! Nobody is supposed to see that. We are gonna finish it up though and get it out there how it’s supposed to be.”

Slim Shady also debunked Swizz Beats’ claims that he’d submitted a track for the project which would be a sequel to the rapper’s 2000 hit “Stan.” “There isn’t a ‘Stan 2,’ and there won’t be. Stan drove his car off a bridge and I’m not writing a song as Stan’s ghost. That would just be really corny.”
